Punters Galore

Let the punter games begin! The Redskins have brought in a few punter/kickoff guys to compete with incumbent Derrick Frost, and today's 2 pm practice will get it started. League sources have told me one of the punters is Eddie Johnson, a former sixth-round pick by the Vikings (1993) who has overcome a series of hip flexor problems. Johnson was waived by Jacksonville a year ago and used 2005 top rebuild his leg strength and fully overcome his hip issues.

Johnson handled kickoffs for the Vikings in his rookie season and displayed strong hang time. He has not kicked off into the end zone as consistently in the NFL as in college. Johnson, 25, worked out for the team this morning, fared well, and was signed. The Redskins are expected to have at least one other punter in camp for today's practice as well, and Thursday's preseason finale with Baltimore could go a long way to settling the issue.

Jason just called from the practice field, where the team is working on more stuff it won't use in preseason, to say that they've signed Johnson and defensive back Vernon Fox. They've cut Jesse Lumsden and Dimitri Patterson.

I assume Jason means he was a 2003-draft pick. Unless the Vikings are drafting 12-year old punters. Which wouldn't surprise anyone, I guess.

Yep, Jason means 2003. Although a 12-year-old NFL punter would be interesting....

Any Nick Novak sightings yet???

Hey ya'll, was scrambling to break the news ASAP to my loyal plog posse. Yeah, 2003 draft pick.
But what about a kickoff between a 12-year-old punting prodigy, Frosty, the new guy )EJ), Air Bud, the dolphin from the first Ace Ventura movie, and a random gal from the Vikings party boat cruise (man, wish I had the blog back then. what fun we could have had with that story).

Any plans to bring in a field goal kicker? Seems like all we've been getting from John Hall are excuses. I mean if Joe Gibbs can sign TJ Duckett because he's a good football player, surely there are other kickers out there? Isn't Nick Novak a "good football player"?

I wish they gave Lumsden more of a chance. It sounded like he might compete for a roster spot from earlier camp reports. I will also join the chorus on NOVAK NOVAK NOVAK...

We did everyone had man-crushes on Lumsden? :(

I'll take some competition for Frost ANY DAY. We are loaded at RB.

Watch the 'Skins offense catch fire against the Ravens and score on every possession. How will St. Joe evaluate punters then? Rochambeau?

What about David Lonie? He was an excellent punter for Cal and can also do kickoffs. Saw him doing ok for the skins the past few games when he was given a he out of the picture?

Cal Fan, Lonie met the Turk Sunday. He's a goner, out there in the vast abyss that is late August for the vagabond kickers and punters of North America. Godspeed, good Aussie. Godspeed, mate.
