Source: John Beck takes pay cut for 2010 season

We've been traveling to and from Phoenix, so we haven't chased the news of quarterback John Beck's extension as hard as we'd like. But we're hearing that while Beck was technically extended through 2012, he also had to accept a significant cut in pay for the 2010 season.

News surfaced earlier this week that Beck signed a two-year, $2.25 million extension that runs through 2012. But the numbers of his preexisting contract were also changed and Beck is now set to make $600,000 in 2010 instead of the $1.1 million his contract previously called for, according to a league source familiar with the deal.

So why would a player accept such a big cut in pay? Beck likely realized his chances of making the roster would significantly increase if his salary requirements were smaller. For a head coach who prefers carrying two quarterbacks instead of three, it's tough to commit seven figures to the third-stringer.

As Beck said following Thursday's preseason finale at Arizona, he's been given no roster guarantees, but his chances are surely better with the smaller contract. If Beck does make the team, he's due a $100,000 roster bonus, according to the source.

Beck saw his most significant playing time of the preseason Thursday night against the Cardinals. He was 11-of-21 passing for 132 yards. He threw one interception and finished the night with 52.1 passer rating. Rosters across the league will be trimmed to 53 players Saturday, so we'll know then whether Beck and his new contract are still in the team's plans.

Ha-ha, Brownwood. Now do you understand why they signed him to an extension?

Just like you refused to understand when I explained it to you repeatedly yesterday: He's competing against Rex Grossman to be the backup QB in 2011.

Do you get it yet?

Beckum and Batels&James stunk it up. He should take a pay cut.

The Jets did the same with Kellen Clemens. However, I don't think John Beck and Kellen Clemens are not at the same skill level... sucks for Clemens, he was almost the heir apparent until Old Favre came along for a season.

beep, this makes much more sense than the way it was presented yesterday. He takes a paycut now, and if he's on the team in the next couple years he basically gets it back. Smart...

Now if we could just get your crazy ass to understand that 1 lost fumble doesn't undo 1 TD...

The pros don't play for real until the 12th.

And so, this weekend's required viewing is:

21 LSU v. 18 North Carolina (SAT nite)

The Tar Heels feature some excellent young defensive lineman, and LSU, well, one of the nation's best up and coming speed players.

Posted by: MistaMoe | September 3, 2010 10:42 AM

The Heels do have a talented DL (most noteably Marvin Austin) but they won't be on display this Saturday.

Unfortunately for North Carolina, the school has declared six players ineligible for this game for violations of school or NCAA rules, and will keep six others out of the opener while the investigation continues.

Defensive tackle Marvin Austin, who had already been suspended by Davis for violating team rules, was one of the players ruled ineligible. The others are cornerbacks Charles Brown and Kendric Burney, wide receiver Greg Little and defensive ends Michael McAdoo and Robert Quinn.

Moe, Are you still going to watch?

It's amazing to me how most are bantering, to be kind, back and forth on which WR's will stick.

Does the lack of O-Line jibber-jabber mean we are set there? Oh yeah, no. I still want to see one legitimate 1st or 2nd teamer added to the roster. Hell, at least to keep the Cow-Faigs from scooping one up.

I will say that I am more than pleased with Trent Williams AT THIS STAGE. I stress that because I know people will cut and paste that portion and then go on to say how he will get killed by Ware, Tuck, Ellis or some other all-pro-level pass rusher. I am 100% on board with Trent being a better fit for what we're doing here than brOkung.

Hit me.

I saw how Clemens got rolled by Jets mgmt on Hard Knocks. Don't want a QB that doesn't have the confidence in himself to stand up. If Sanchez goes down, do you really want a weak armed 40 year old Brunell back there? Clemens had a good bargaining position and didn't use it.

Butch Davis still has a ton of talent on that team, although losing Marvin Austin does hurt them big time. Also they are being suspended for TEAM violations for defacing the program. 3 other players arent traveling and may be suspended, most notably Quan Sturdivant. UNC is in some trouble but they are still chalk full of blue chips. Also watch the game just to see LSUs Patrick Peterson, corner back. He might be the best defensive player in the SEC no foolin.

This will still be a quality game. Great game not getting as much publicity, Uconn at Mich. RFandy Edsall is creating quite a program and Rich Rod needs a win to get some breathing room in Ann Arbour. OBV Boist v VT will be the fireworks.

Austin has made the squad and has emerged as a legitimate option at WR. His development at WR would only enhance the chances of Banks making the 53. No way they would keep both if they were only options as KR/PR.

The problem for Banks is that not only is he diminutive, but he has small hands and he smells like cabbage. Now those characteristics are a plus for a carnie but no so for a KR/PR. My guess for him would be the PS.

Posted by: Diesel44 | September 3, 2010 1:03 PM | Report abuse

And you would give up a lost fumble for a TD? The lost fumble is at least three points with a good shot at seven.

As for your his boosters keep saying his flaws are teachable, why hasn't heard learned them yet comment- you do realize he's 22 and played just 2 yrs of big time college football, right? I find it amusing/amazing that you assume all these guys come in here with the fundamentals down pat. I'd say that's the exception, not the rule, especially for a JUCO transfer and unheralded but talented guy like BB.

Again, this guy should make the team and I am confident that he will.

Do all the GM's around the league get together and pull the same moves.

Jets made Clements take a cut as well and most teams didn't play the starters at all. Seems like they are talking to one another. Does make sense.

So throw some corned beef on him and call him "Irish". Hell, his name is Brandon after all.

I would practice-squad him and when Joey Galloway passes away of old age by week 9, maybe call him up. I could go either way though because fumbles don't equal strikes...they equal losses more often than not.

Yes, Randel El would pirouette twice and fall down but at least he could catch the ball.

My last pitch for why we should keep Banks..I know he fumbled but that happens..
Banks is a threat evrytime he's on the field whether he has the ball or not...he can be a decoy..run a clear out for another reciever to get the ball..or those slip screens he can take one to the house at anytime...now here's something from last night game....

Against Arizona on Thursday night, Austin caught five passes for a team-high 94 yards and one touchdown, while Banks had five catches for 65 yards. Williams, Wade and Hodge did not catch a pass in the game.

5 for 65...13 yrds per catch avg.....that's a good average...plus anyone of those catches could be taken to the house..he's just that fast..and speed will always be a problem for D-Coordinators..if the only thing it does it make them have to think about it...

~~
Yeah, pretty amazing to me as well. I continue to want to banter about the linebackers with no takers for going on 6-7 months now.
So anyways....
Robert Henson, a guy I was wondering about because the Redskin Insider until today never mentioned him, played like the guy I saw at TCU. I wrote this MONTHS ago, Henson remind me of a poor man's Derrick Brooks.
Chris Wilson may be listed as a linebacker, but damned if he doesn't look like a perfect weakside end.

I wrote this about 2 weeks ago-shame that Haynesworth went about disagreeing with the defense the way he did. If he had cooperated and tried to finesse the situation, perhaps he and the play of Orakpo and Wilson may have been enought to coax Shanahan and Haslett to re-consider changing the base to a 3-4. As Chuck D. once said of De La Soul, we're "rhyming for the sake of riddlin'" with the schematic change. Meaning we're being needlessly complex.

Orakpo played strongside end at Texas & Wilson looks like he was born to play the 'Will' end. Rocky McIntosh looks like the lightbulb has come on. Hopefully, Gatewood has played himself onto the practice squad. I want to like Blades, but right now he's just a body-nothing special.P.Riley looks like a keeper.

But what makes me happy is remembering what I wrote some time ago, that if A.Carter and/or L.Alexander beats out any of these natural linebackers and starts, all of the linebackers ought to be embarrassed. Well, other than injuries-that's not going to happen.

Onto the offensive line. S.Heyer didn't have a good game. It's no guarantee that T.Williams is going to get undressed against the Cowboys because TW is going against Haynesworth,Orakpo and Wilson in practice. But as well all knew, the offensive line has been in need of some new blood for years and we didn't get it all squared away this offseason, so we'll see. Jay Ratliff is a nuisance, hopefully the interior guys are up to the task.
With respect to Chad Rhinehart,I can be patient with WRs that may take a few years to develop, but an OG should have shown us something in three years, even though the franchise has been mismanaged.

I have no real idea who BA will snag starting at whenever the snagging is allowed to commence Saturday night, but i do know he is gonna be in there snagging like a mofo.

He needs Olinemen, LBs and WRs. A FS would not suck either. Be nice to get one each who is an upgrade over the last guy on our current roster who is going to make the 53. I'd take Crayton, dump JG, and tell him to stay in shape and near a phone. Hell, he could just camp out over at Keenan's place.

Then I'd have Keenan and Haslett grill Crayton on what those punk azzes that just dropped yer azz are planning to do Sunday night.

The whole notion that a player from a divisional rival can give you "insider info" if you sign him is overstated.

The only thing a player could give you insider info on is what players do blow and cheat on their wives. Because all the on the field stuff (tendencies, player strength & weaknesses) should already be overstood by the coaching staff.

To all that keep talking about B.Banks' size. Clarence Verdin was about the same size, he stayed in the NFL for years and was a standout punt-returner. Darren Sproles is shorter than Banks at 5-5.Maurice Jones-Drew is 5-7. Over time, all these 150lb guys naturally gain weight.

Rarely do they take the kill shots so many of you think the B.Banks is destined & fated for.

Armchair GM - I agree with your look at the O line. Can't see keeping Rhino around any longer. Hoping they can upgrade/replace Heyer as well. Those are two guys that are just NOT progressing. Capers and Cooke show a lot more promise. I'd invest the time and spots in them.

We may need more immediate help than they can offer, so still looking for that veteran RT/G who can fill that gap on the depth chart.

Also, I'd keep Banks if we cannot find a better WR off the wires. Then I'd try to keep him on Practice Squad. I think Austin is just a slightly safer bet at the moment, but love Banks game changing abilities. Tough call to me.

Don't get offended, but may I ask you why you mentioned WRs?
I hope you watch the Simpsons so that you can get this...

The preoccupation that fans on the RI have with wide receivers reminds me of the classic Simpsons episode with Burns owning the baseball team and bringing in MLB ringers, one of whom was Steve Sax. Sax's sideburns were too long in Burns' mind, so everytime he saw Sax, Burns would scream "Sax, cut those sideburns!" Sax would oblige, but like Redskin fans with wide receivers, it was never enough. Burns' preoccupation with Sax's sideburns caused the poor guy to wind with a upside-down, reverse mohawk-it was hilarious.

Thanks very much and you're totally right about me being over 35 - just by a few years anyway. Nothing to hide here.

Is it me or does Thom Lavaro on ESPN980 sound just like the dude (JJBullock)?

Anyway, thanks again.

the only thing gayer than Blog-Cred would be Jim J. Bullock in a leopard thong at a Village People concert

Posted by: No_Punt_Intended | September 3, 2010 2:00 PM

That or a screen name like "No Punt Intended."

I'd take Crayton, dump JG, and tell him to stay in shape and near a phone. Hell, he could just camp out over at Keenan's place.

You're right, it's nowhere near as creative as the sound your mother makes when she backs up. My bad.

Thx kassmaster...then in that case what skinfaninKaneohe said makes no sense...

I mean some of this pick up what other teams cut talk is bordering on ridiculous..
what makes everyone think that someone who's cut from another team will be a good player or bring any value to us...

Patrick Crayton anyone???

Posted by: taylormade218 | September 3, 2010 2:38 PM | Report abuse

It was Don Mattingly. Thats why its so funny when he says that he still like Burns better then Steinbrenner. Really one of the best lines ever. Steve Sax went to jail for all the unsolved murders in NYC, "you just dont know when to keep your mouth shut do you saxyboy".

Awesome Awesome episode.

Thanks for the clarification-so many great episodes, it's hard to keep it straight. That $ht was funny wasn't it?

On that note-what's the boards favorite Simpsons episodes/scenes?

I have a few, the one where they were on the camping trip, teetering in the RV over a cliff edge. Homer then decides the family is going to evacuate the RV on the count of 3, at the count of one-doors slam and all except Homer are out.

Or...
At school, Valentine's Day-all of the kid are giving out cards and Nelson is passed one from Lisa& after reading it, Nelson looks toward the front of the classroom and looking back at him is Milhouse.
Next scene-Milhouse is being wheeled out on a gurney.

Or...
When Homer greedily ate that super-sour candy and that $ht collapsed his face.
Or the Lemon tree/Shelbyville episode.

Thoughts?

This is where CPs superior ability to help protect comes into play. You can bet that they are talking that up in the RB meeting room. In the Oline room, its "Come on TW, you got to carry your own water son". But not in the RB room. Over there its " All right men, we know Sexy ain't taking us now where, so you all BEST keep Dmac standing tall and watch youngblood's back over there at LT.

I think the running game will be fine, clinton portis became CLINTON PORTIS running in the scheme. He's going to suprise the hell out of many fans, it wasn't as though he had the Hogs in front of him at Denver and he still excelled. Like you said, Portis is exceptional with blitz pick-ups-he is a really physical back.
How much? Check this out...
The stories that came out the Univ of Miami when Portis was there went like this-Portis was so physical and intimidating there-he actually intimidated the OTHER RUNNING BACKS. That's right, F.Gore,J.Payton and Willis McGahee had their confidence taken by Portis to the point that they were relieved when he finally left and went pro. I have no doubt Portis will help the passblocking/blitz pick-ups.

Wait, you wrote this $ht and you are up on here calling people idiots?!?!

What makes you think the Detroit Lions are going to give up a premier young receiver in Calvin Johnson for Marcus Mason?

I hope that dumb idea you wrote is a part of your suicide letter-kill yourself.

@beantown

I'm not finished with you just yet. I patted myself to the back because I deserved it. Everything I referenced is what I've been writing all this time.

I see that you think you are part of a clique on these boards, but guess what I DON'T CARE.
I come on these boards, say my piece and the chips fall.

In these instances, I've been saying what I wrote for months now-too bad you and the "clique" are so busy s/u/c/k/i/n/g/ each other d/y/c/k/s to notice.

So do me a favor-take Brownwood out your mouth perhaps you'll see something other than his stomach.

Naw. Houzmadahda better...too bad that he's carring a monster contract. I liked the way he quietly put up numbers without being distracted by ocho cinco in Cinci.

But naw to Crayton.
