Quick hits: Zorn, Hunter Smith updates

Rick Maese tweets ...

Zorn: "My deal is, I'm the head football coach. I want to be here for next 10 years. That's my story. I have a contract, it says what it says"

Zorn said he didn't hear Cerrato's show; he said Cerrato didn't offer such assurance privately, but that he didn't need it, either.

No update on LT Chris Samuels. Probably won't have one until next week. Sounds like Hunter Smith will be ready to go Monday.

We'll have more for you in a bit.

Repost, for what it is worth.

===========================================
Pulling out single plays from the Giants game does not prove that the defense is bad.

So, basically, until Monday, your argument is only an interesting contention.

Posted by: JohnDinHouston | October 23, 2009 2:06 PM |

It was a lot more than one incident. Manning had so much time in the pocket that he could have tallied up the attendence count. The DBs were doing their "10 yd cushion" thing. They made the Giants journeyman WRs look like Plax and Toomer.

Vinny Cerrato needs to sit down on Peter North's lap.

That'll fix him up real good.

I bet BG disagrees...

ml, for jaws to say its not the playcalling, is technically true, because while its not exclusively execution, its a combination of things.

Someone should ask him if throwing the ball to Moss 1 time versus the chiefs was good playcalling??

4th, our D is probably going to be on the field too long as usual due to the Soup led O. Most Eagles games are decided by seven or less. However, with the added vinnyism's lately I wouldn't be surprised if DC loses 31-6.

WR Santana Moss on the news that Redskins coach Jim Zorn's job is safe for the season: "Now he can coach freely and focus on football."

Oct 23 1:32 ET
"If it puts the players' mind at ease....great!" Redskins coach Jim Zorn said regarding his job security assurance (for the season). "I don't need to hear that, but if it allows them to stay focused, I am all for it."

Fair point, Liberty, but we still don't know how the defense will stack up against an above average offense; It looks like Blache is still tweaking the thing, and who knows, maybe the defense has some pride and will stand up for the rest of the year. They don't suck, that's for sure.

throwing a 50 yd bomb at the end the 1st half is also a sound play call.

I'd like to think Suisham has a better chance of hitting a FG from that distance than Campbell does of completing that pass.

Why are people portraying Jim Zorn as some martyr. What has he done?

He's 8-12 and has yet to score 30 points.

We scored 9 points against the Rams.

We scored two field goals against the Chiefs.

Jim Zorn's offense has done NOTHING!

Why in the hell is ARE still returning punts?

Why do you throw a fade route to a 5'9" receiver when you have three guys over 6 feet?

Sherman Lewis could suck but I'm shocked at the level of disrespect towards Lewis and loyalty to a Zorn. He's a nice guy, but he's done NOTHING.

Yes. We have personnel problems, but if Sherman Lewis can get this team in the end zone, then screw Jim Zorn. He'll get paid anyway.

The season is not over, and if you're not careful the players will quit on you.

I'll worry about who gets fired in January.

I'm a die hard Redskin fan but let's be real here. Our #5 defense has played against 5 of the worst teams in the league. Unless they improve along with the offense, we may only see two more in the "W" column. And I'm fine with Zorn staying through the season. It will give him a chance to save his job or show why he deserves to be hired elsewhere. If he gets us to 8-8, keep him and dump Vinny.

Not disagreement here Cheye.

But seriously, WHO do you want evaluating talent & capability?

Posted by: ksquare | October 23, 2009 2:55 PM | Report abuse

Zorn has nothing to lose now. He must sit Portis when he doesn't practice, sit ARE on punt returns, and have DT return kickoffs. So what if he pisses off Vinny now. Vinny wouldn't dare go back on his word and fire Zorn mid-season and make a liar of himself.

A couple of things about the "Z is not going to be fired" thing;

1. Now Z has time to use all of the sick days in his contract.

2. This is a difference w/o a distinction. He was "fired" when they relieved him of his play calling duties. Lewis is going to start inserting his own plays in the play book and by the end of the season there will be very little if any trace of Z at all. Diisappearing man is what they call it.

Zorn will be busy running ghost radar on his iPhone ... seeking out those quantum fluctuations that voodoo heebee geebee stuff to determine just what to say and do out there. Sherm Lewis and Sherm Smith might be calling some plays but unless they awaken the ghosts of Redskins past it ain't goin' to be pretty.

Get real. Zorn has to have made it to the Sony Discman stage by now.

Over the course of three or four hours on Monday, he could listen to a good percentage of the Journey or Foreigner back catalogs. He'd exhaust the Boston catalog by the end of the first half, though.

I'd really like to keep Zorn around. Let Zorn run the player meetings, practices, manage the game form the sidelines, and coach the players. Let Sherm design plays, call plays, and create the gameplan. I think we will be better off seperating the 2. It seems as if the 2 may be better suited for 2 different personalities. It won't happen but it would be nice.

Zorn stays, Sherm calls the plays, Levi Jones was signed, Alridge and Mason cut, running back no one's heard of signed, Campbell says there's so many issues he doesn't know where to begin, Portis defends the owner...

I get this image of Jim Zorn standing in a stampede of his players yelling, "Stay medium! Stayyyyyyyyy mediummmmmm!" You have to get this picture of Kevin Bacon screaming to the crowd in Animal House, "Remain calm! All is well!"

Posted by: RedSkinHead | October 23, 2009 3:09 PM | Report abuse

Here's the first sentence of the Redskins' press release (on redskins.com) about Cerrato's announcement:

"Seeking to douse the raging fires of speculation, rumor and the uninformed guesswork of 'unnamed sources,' the Redskins went to the well for a bucket of clarity concerning questions about coach Jim Zorn’s job security this season."

"Bucket of clarity"?? The Redskins can't even find good PR writers, let alone coaches or players. I could have come up with better metaphors than that when I was in 3rd Grade.

BTW, the entire press release reeks of Nixonian paranoia about the media. Wow, Redskins Park must be a jolly place to work...
