Qwest Field Takes Toll on Sellers, Portis
Dan Steinberg reports:
The Redskins got back to their early-season pattern of running Clinton Portis as much as he could handle it. Yesterday's 29 carries equaled a season high, and he's had at least 21 carries in every Redskins win. (Only Michael Turner has more carries this season.)
"When we run the ball, we win," fullback Mike Sellers said today during a brief stop at a quiet Redskins Park. "Statistically, you look at it, we run the ball we win. No matter what, that's what this team is."
Portis is back in the league lead for rushing, again a frontrunner for MVP honors, and set to smash his career high for yardage. His current pace would give him about 1,750 yards; he's never passed 1,600. And he's done it without practicing the past two weeks because of a variety of injuries.
"He really has been banged up, and he shouldn't have played a few games," Sellers said. "He gets through it. I don't know how he does it, but as long as he keeps doing it, I'm not going to complain."
You might have seen where Portis said after yesterday's game that both his legs and both his arms were bleeding. I asked Sellers about that, and he said that he also was bleeding all over his body, pointing to a massive shiny gash on his left shin and another bandage on his left knee. He said the turf at Qwest Field was the worst he had ever seen.
"I don't know what was wrong with that turf, but that was the first time I ever got burned like that," Sellers said. "Me and Clinton were both after the game in the training room, just like "aiiiigh," because we had turf burns everywhere.... I mean, I had a big old chunk of skin gone."
I can verify that it was a pretty grotesque wound.

CP is gonna be dead by the end of the season. They need to get Betts more carries during the game to a) Rest CP and $)get him in a rhythm so he doesn't put it on the tuf at the end.

So they've added flesh-eating turf this year? God I hate that stadium.

Let CP rest the next couple of days and Dollar Bill will be ready to roll come Sunday.

I'm telling you guys...this reeks of Stephen Davis all over again. Ride him till the wheels come off--and come off they do in December. I hope CP can hold up because I'm not sure this ground game will work the same with Betts in there.

Considering that they are pretty decent without it, IF they they can fix this key problem they can be a team that threatens to do something, if not....its the Norv Years 2.o.

That would be the Norv Years 3.0. Norv 2.0 is happening right now in San Diego.

Portis should not be practicing for the rest of the season. (Much to his delight!).

POrtis will be in a nursing home if we don't get te bal more to Betts. I like the idea of getting Knowshon Moreno next year in the draft, need a good RB to pick up slack of aging portis. However, till then, we need to get more early reps to Betts and let CP pound the ball in the 2nd half when D is worn out.

Portis is nowhere to be found in Peter King's column this morning in King's list of MVP candidates.
