nOT TOO BAD OF AN INJURY REPORT

Posted by: SAK2 | October 10, 2008 5:05 PM | Report abuse

not bad at all. should be a fine day in Landover...

Look for Campbell to go hog wild. Should be started in ALL fantasy leagues. I say 300 yds, 3 TDs and again a clean sheet with no pickles

Posted by: Notorious_LMG | October 10, 2008 5:11 PM | Report abuse

I am in total agreement with Notorious_LMG! Jinx, schminx! The Redskins will beat the Rams by 31 points!

Jason Taylor probable? Wow! I hope they ease him into it, we'll need him over the long haul!

other than Drew Bennett, i don't even recognize the names of the others on the STL injury report.

DreamOutLoud, Will Witherspoon used to be on the Jags or the Panthers (they tend to mush together in my brain ... cat-wise) ... he's pretty good.

Brandon Lange (Two For The Money) just said the Rams will beat the Redskins...he likes Jim Haslett and said we (the Skins) are going to be flat.

Posted by: Lisa_R | October 10, 2008 5:37 PM | Report abuse

Thats what I'm worried about, Lisa. But I sure hope not!

Posted by: DikShuttle | October 10, 2008 5:40 PM | Report abuse

Oh - but he's against the spread... screw the spread.

Posted by: DikShuttle | October 10, 2008 5:46 PM | Report abuse

it would have to be a perfect s**t storm for us to lose this simply because STL's defense is really bad. I could see us losing to Cleveland or Detroit under the above fears but even if we fall behind by 20 points this week, we should still be able to run all over them...the weather is supposed to be good so that won't be a factor.

i dunno. i hate feeling this confident. something is definitely making me queasy. i'm not used to this.

Sorry...sounded to me like Lange picked the Rams to win. Last week he picked the Eagles to beat us.

Stay medium folks - this is a different Redskins team then the past, even from the Gibbs II teams. The overall "Zorn-ness" of this group is becoming more and more evident.

I mean, it's just so plainly obvious! Come on, people!

Anyway, go Skins!!

"I couldn't imagine my guy doing it," one former head coach said. "Maybe when you retire, but during the season? It's a joke."

But if you are a fan of the Washington Redskins, this is no laughing matter.

Seriously, wouldn't you much rather have Cerrato on college campuses Monday watching practices and game tape of potential draft choices? Or have him in his office working the phones, trying to improve his roster with a trade or a signing of a recently waived free agent who might fit in? Or have him in a personnel meeting discussing all the options if and when a starter goes down the previous day?

I'm so tired of the FO doing stupid things that are ridiculed by every other team. I mean, why waste time with a lame show? As Shapiro states, be on site to make Dannys' team better.

Posted by: lsskinsfan | October 10, 2008 8:09 PM | Report abuse

How sad are you longsuffering? Can't stand the success that the Skins are having, you have to reach to something dead to drag up and complain about? How is this radio show having a negative impact on the Skins? JC is having a good season so you need to complain about the FO. What a joke you are! Go back to your ledge so that you are ready to jump in case the season goes south.

I agree with Shapiro and his column. If you don't agree fine. I also have stated I am glad to be proven wrong on JC.

Too bad your mother chose life with you!

Posted by: lsskinsfan | October 10, 2008 8:32 PM | Report abuse

Nice comeback longsuffering! Why don't you try to bring something positive to this blog instead of hate? There is enough of that already.

This FO have more to be praised about this season than to be hated on. Tell me, how is the show having a negative impact on the Skins?

Posted by: donj1963 | October 10, 2008 8:36 PM | Report abuse

donj1963,

Yes you started off with such positivity. What a shining example of peace you are!

Read Shapiros' article in the WAPO to understand what the FO and VC in particular should be doing. You are free to disagree, just don't complain about hate when that's the way you started off this thread. I retaliated against you and you didn't like it. Too bad.

Posted by: lsskinsfan | October 10, 2008 8:44 PM | Report abuse

i'm amused that people think Vinny taking some a few hours during the week for a radio show in anyway inhibits his ability to perform his duties as GM. I bet he spends more time eating meals. It's a joke. Of course he can run the show and still do whatever he needs as GM. and do you mean to suggest that if there ever was a time that his duties as GM conflicted with his duties as radio host (i.e., time conflict), that he wouldn't get a stand-in for the radio? I'm sure that everyone agrees GM comes first.

this is make-work complaining.

Posted by: DreamOutLoud | October 10, 2008 8:51 PM | Report abuse

longsuffering, of course the WaPo is going to take a negative viewpoint of the FO. That is all they do.

I posted what I did becuase the majority of your posts are negative. The Skins are 4-1 and have a chance for something special and you need to post something from an article written three days ago. Please, go be negative somewhere else.

This place is dead! Am I the only one without a life tonight?

Can't wait 'til Sunday to see what these Skins are made of. When a good teams beat the teams they are supposed to beat in a convincing fashion then you know that your team is for real. These next three games will show us who the Skins are.

I don't know you and you certainly don't know me.
You go elsewhere if you don't like a different opinion. I also know that if the skins started losing, VC and his show would be an easy mark.

I'll try to be as postive as you.

Posted by: Curzon

Exactly right Curzon! They must win these games against struggling teams to continue their strong start. I love that they admit they are playing well, but readily admit to mistakes. Zorn says as much too. You want to play well all season, but peak at the end. Maybe VC will prove to be "super smart" GM with his first 3 picks, but so far they've been less than what you'd expect.

Posted by: lsskinsfan | October 10, 2008 9:18 PM | Report abuse

Cool, longsuffering. I will accept that I took an aggressive approach to your post. But you still have not answered the question. How is the radio show impacting the Skins in a negative way?

Posted by: donj1963 | October 10, 2008 9:18 PM | Report abuse

don,

I stated already I agree with Shapiros' article. In it he states many GM's field dozens of calls everyday of the week that a player gets hurt, or underperforms. If VC is busy doing other things, perhaps it impairs his ability to trade for, or acquire a player. Just saying it isn't the right time for it. Is it riveting radio? I hear otherwise. I don't get it here in SC.

Posted by: lsskinsfan | October 10, 2008 9:22 PM | Report abuse

Dan and Vinny have made many mistakes with regards to MY (as long as I have rooted for this team I feel like they are mine) Skins, but over the last few years they seem to have corrected their mistakes (thanks to J. Gibbs!). They have won the games that many thought they would lose, now they have to win the games they should win.

I am looking for an 11 win season if not better!!

Posted by: Curzon417 | October 10, 2008 9:23 PM | Report abuse

longsuffering, I have listened to his show on espn980 and do not find it riveting, but do not think that it is hurting this team. I will agree to disagree with you on this...

Posted by: donj1963 | October 10, 2008 9:25 PM | Report abuse

I agree that Vinny has better things to do then hosting a radio show, there are plenty of wannabe's out there that could do what Vinny is doing.Does any other GM have a talk show? ahh let me think....... NO!!! As stated earlier he could be scouting pro prospects or maybe shoring up the roster in case of injuries,I said as much in the comment section of Shapiro's article He could be sharpening his draft skills(Devin Thomas,Malcom(bad knee)Kelly? you think the Patriots or the Colts GM is running his mouth on the radio daily NO!! Vinny's got no business being on the air, other than the occasional interview to talk about personel moves but this is what happens when the owner and the GM are siamese twins and the owner happens to control propaganda radio and oh yeah Larry Michael is a terrible play by play man worst in the league.

Posted by: dargregmag | October 10, 2008 9:58 PM | Report abuse

Cerrato has been a problem. But not this year. Gibbs really did change the tenor of this organization

As far as draft picks go, its difficult to separate Gibbs from Cerrato, but I'll nominally think there is more Viiny and less Joe credit there, since Joe had to coach a team when Vinny and his crew were scouting the colleges.

Vinny's ability to pick talent is pretty good. Draft picks are very hit and miss. The odds aren't that good and there are plenty of 1st round busts.

Since 2003, all of the Skins round 1 picks have been solid (Jason Campbell, Carlos Rogers, Sean Taylor and LaRon Landry). There have only been 2 2nd round picks prior to this year (Rocky Mc and Taylor Jacobs) and just 3 3rd round picks (Dockery, Cooley and Rinehart).

Excluding the 2008 rookies, only one of the 8 players picked in rounds 1-3 (from 2003-2007) has been a bust. Every other pick has been high quality.

The issue hasn't been the ability to spot talent.

There have been 2 issues.

First, they (Gibbs and Cerrato in some combination) traded away far too many picks for far too little value. There were just 9 picks in the first 4 rounds from 2003-2007. That means 11 picks were traded away.

Second, they picked guys for positions in a weighting that makes no sense.

In the last 34 picks (back to 2003), they have selected 4 TEs, 4 QBs, 4 OL and 3 DL.

On the field, there is 1 TE, 1 QB. But 5 OL and 4 DL.

Of the 4 OL they've picked, 2 are out of the league, Dockery left via FA and only rookie Reinhart is here. The DL picks have panned out, Golston, Montgomery and Rob Marshall. None of the OL or DL picks came in the first 2 rounds.

The issue hasn't been spotting talent, its been in underestimating the value of the draft and focusing too many picks on positions with minimal need.

Zcest, great post! I cannot agree with you more!

Dargregmag, would you like to answer the question I posed to lsskinsfan? How is the radio show negatively impacting the Skins season??

Posted by: donj1963 | October 10, 2008 10:13 PM | Report abuse

What's with all the less than positive post on here? The Redskins are a good team. They will take care of business with their next three opponents! This coach will not let them look beyond the next team.

Let's have a little confidence for our team here. Good teams win the games they should win and beat teams that look good on paper. The team that played the last two games would beat the giants!

What amazes me is that so many on this blog, in today's world are superstitious. It is about team play on the field, not whether or not you or I say/post something. This team is on it's way to the playoffs and we need to get behind them.

Believe people!

If you do not have confidence in this Skins team, get off of the bandwagon now. Otherwise keep that negative sh!t out of here (that includes you chris larry!)!!!

"...anyone that wants to question the Skins FO..."

donj1963, we're all fans of this team (aside from the ambassadors from other teams who participate in this community), but that's probably the ONLY thing we have in common.

You have a particular idea of how fans ought to conduct themselves, and that's fine... but please don't insult me and the rest of the folks up here by insisting we march in lockstep or else be considered "opponents." Please.

A delicious run of wins is a potent balm, to be sure, and in case you haven't noticed the negativity has plummeted on this board. But we are entitled as fans to be skeptical about and critical of an owner and front office and coaching staff who have done much for us but have not yet added to that collection of Lombardis out at the Park.

Posted by: NateinthePDX | October 10, 2008 11:40 PM | Report abuse

PDX, where are you when Chris Larry is posting? When he is saying don't jinx this team? When he is saying don't beat on JLC? Don't come on and try to talk like this to me if you are not going to do the same to others. Chris Larry is always trying to tell posters how to march. If you are not going to tell him, then don't tell me.

Yes, the negativity has been down, but so has the number of post. Why is that? Registration!! Most don't want to be attacked by all of the regulars. I really don't care if I am attacked. I do not post most of the time, but do love my Skins and don't care to hear from those who just want to be negative.

...and longsuffering, dude, I was being sarcastic up there about TCCL... yeah, I like it because it's part of the RI zeitgeist, but I'll be the first to admit that it's dorky, obscure, lame, etc. (and hence my sarcasm about how "obvious" it was).. but how could it come as a surprise that an internet community has some dorky attributes? Isn't it by definition dorky?

Posted by: NateinthePDX | October 10, 2008 11:48 PM | Report abuse

Under Gibbs 2.0, we couldn't beat teams we were supposed to beat. This game is as important as our last two games because we have to handily beat the teams which, on paper, we are supposed to destroy. If Zorn can bring this team to victory on each of the next 3 games, we will know this is not a fluke and that this team, like redskins teams in the past few years, doesn't play to the level of our opponents.

Curz, I was addressing the donj post from 11:25pm. Maybe it's because I'm not as familiar with donj's work, but I don't see any of the humor inherent in chris larry's comments about jinxes or whatever, I just see an overzealously strident attempt to dictate how the conversation should be among fans... keep it positive or hit the road! That kind of "love it or leave it" mentality always rubs me the wrong way. It's disrespectful of people who choose to take a more circumspect view and see shades of gray instead of black and white.

Yeah, sure, so I'm a hypocrite for not calling out any of the "regulars" or whatever. I'll agree. Fair enough. I never claimed to be perfect. I just want the conversation to be respectful up here, and while I have failed at that myself from time to time, I read that 11:25pm post as highly disrespectful to those who have valid opinions that just happen to be considered "negative."

I'm also having a beer and relaxing a bit, and just trying to get some conversation going up here, and etc. Not trying to pee in anyone's Friday night Wheaties. And Lord knows we've run out of conversation with less than two days to go before kickoff...

Curz, re-reading your comment, I can't quite make out what got you so upset... sorry, man, obviously I said something that got you really ticked off.

Sorry, Nate, my bat. I am sitting here drinking and upset about the many negative comments about the skins this evening. Just jumped on the comments on here. Nothing personal and maybe I should stop posting till my buzz (more than just a buzz) is off.

No, no, far better to talk it out, Curz.

Hell, I happen to agree that the negativity gets too deep up here sometimes, but I usually just let it slide... I think it's cathartic to get that stuff out of your system, especially since there's usually no shortage of differing views offered up here.

And good grief, what a wringer we've been through for the past 15 years! Despite all the good moments here and there, there has been a lot of ugliness and despair... of course there's a significant portion of the fan base which has built up a cumulative store of bile and frustration that keeps spilling over... what we need is one of those victory parades someone suggested the other day, the kind they hold a few days after the team wins the league title...

Who is this donj guy and who made him the RI positivity police? Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't a "Bandwagon" made up of people that climb on because of current popularity or victory? By my theory there is no such thing as a negative "Bandwagon Jumper" because if their was anything to be negative about they wouldn't be on the bandwagon.

But anyway, whatever, however we each may feel about the way the team is run and the particular decisions we've seen the owner and front office make and so forth, we're all united in our hope that the Skins open up a ginormous can of whoop-ass on the Rams this Sunday. No trap, no surprise, no shenanigans, just a thorough beatdown.

I think that for the vast majority the folks that are negative just like to say, "see, I told you so." Of course, they may be right 50% of the time but in their minds the sky is falling and has been forever - there's no depth on this team, the o-line is too old, Sean Springs will not be on the team next year, Marcus Washington is done, Reed Doughty sucks, Jason Campbell is mentally slow, he won't ever be successful in this offense, Joe Gibbs can't see talent, etc. etc.

Nevermind that stuff, this team is playing with house money - 2-1 in the division on the road. The 'skins are 4-1 despite only 6 sacks by the defense. The combined record of remaining road opponents is 5-17! However this group is 4-8 at home.

Regarding Vinny, I'd rather have him doing a radio show than cooking up more schemes to trade away our draft choices for dubious returns. Re the Rams, I think the Skins success is still so fresh and exhilarating for them, that they will keep rolling at least till the bye week; hate to look ahead, but I can't wait till the Steelers game.

In response to my blog concerning Vinny, first off I love this team since 1963
i've been a unabashed fan i wear my colors here in enemy territory(ATL.)without reservation. My problem with the show is Vinny is a GM and as most of you would agree still in ojt mode, focus on that and not a radio talk show like i said in a earlier blog what other GM in the NFL has a talk show, not one.He needs to concentrate on the waiver wire, the trade deadline, and the upcomming draft, thats it period.

Yo Curz and donny j,

Thanks so much for your unwarrented attack on me when I wasn't even involved in the conversation. That is a duechey move if you ask me.

re: Jinxes....yes I am a supersticious fan, sue me. I get nervous when people talk about already winning games with 10 point leads in the 3rd quarter. Or count wins before we even play the games. I have watched to much NFL football to get in that trap.

re: "Negative fans"First of all I have been flying high up here lately, was positive during last years run, and demonstrate my love many times. Now I view being analytical as a fan (and in life, duh)to be a POSITIVE THING. Part of the fun of following a team, taking ownership, is thinking you know stuff and have opinions. I want this team to rock and rolla, thus that means worrying more about way to improve, than thinking everything is "fine"

re: Vinny radio show. I could give a SJK and have never commented on it.

re: telling people how to think. Straight BS. I come strong to the hole with opinions, love to argue, but I dont tell people how to think. That arguement has been chapping my azz for awhile. Your confusing having a strong voice as telling others what they should think...

Major whateves here, sorry for long post, but I find it insane that I take shots when I have hardly even been commenting lately.

With you on that one cL. Wouldn't be much fun without discussion fuel. If everyone was all flowers and puppies there wouldn't be much point to being on here. And yes, I would like to tell the commentators on TV to please stop talking about the turnover thing.

My girl got me Madden 2009 for my birthday and I played the gints as my very 1st opponent. I went to punt and the roster had Frost still on the team and his very 1st punt was a shank.

Do I switch to Brooks?

You're making huge assumptions that this work isn't being done. It's four hours a week. Not a big. Do really believe thos four hours put the skins in a competitive disadvantage. I think not.

Heck no. I want Cerrato out there solving our financial meltdown. Also, if he could bring peace to the Middle East, that would be a big help.

I would like to know why the WaPo is so stressed out about Vinny having a radio show....what the heck does it matter to them? Seriously.

First it was JLC who went off about it...called the NFL and tried to get Vinny in trouble (with a shovel). When that backfired on JLC, I suppose he was told to keep his mouth shut for the time being so now the WaPo has henchman Shapiro on the case. Oh, and Shapiro, Vinny is probably being cautious with his remarks because of what JLC tried to pull. He is aware JLC and the WaPo is just waiting for him to make a mistake so they can go for the jugular again. Sickening, really.

Just GET OVER IT, WAPO!!!

Hell yes you switch Dorf.

Look there is no law that says a person is not able to do more than one thing at a time. People really need to get over Vinny on the radio (yes I talking about you JLC).

One more thing. Look at all the teams that are 0-4 right now. Look at the teams that are 2-2 right now. They GM don't have a show but their record is worse than ours. Enjoy the team winning and let the small stuff that JLC is trying to create out of his hate go.

Not to change the subject, but...
I've got a friend in Denver who emailed today to ask me if I'd trade CP to Denver for Champ Bailey.

I'd told him he'd have to throw in a 2nd rounder to sweeten the deal, but in all reality, I wouldn't make the deal, regardless.

I thought it was stupid at the time for the Skins to have to add a 2nd rounder, but there's never been a time when I thought it was a bad trade, player for player.

Curious to see what the hamsters think.

To everyone patting the FO on the back and believing they've changed, please consider that the Bengals, - the Bengals? - saved Vinny and Danny from themselves by not taking a first and a conditional third for Chad Ocho Cinco.

Were you at Redskins Park??? Do you know this for a fact? Thought so.

And even if it were true, Vinny simply would not have drafted 2 WRs....

Posted by: Lisa_R | October 11, 2008 3:30 PM | Report abuse

Lisa, no I wasn't there. Is that really the test for whether something actually occurred?

Here's what the principals said:

"Bengals Coach Marvin Lewis confirmed
yesterday to ESPN and the Associated Press that his team turned down the Redskins' most recent offer: a first-round pick and a conditional third-round pick for Johnson.

Vinny Cerrato, Washington's executive vice president of football operations, said
only: 'We'll just leave it with what Marvin Lewis said. I really don't think there's anything to add to that.' "

I don't care at all about whether we were going to trade for Chad Johnson - or not. Big Deal.

What is totalling baffling to me is that our beloved team has been playing well (hope they keep it up!) - this is GREAT news but all everyone keeps trying to do is trash Vinny.

Posted by: Lisa_R | October 11, 2008 4:20 PM | Report abuse

Vinny has earned some ill-will, but winning soothes a lot of wounds.

I think another poster (I don't remember who) had it right--Gibbs built the foundation for this team with his penchant for "character guys." Vinny (and Danny) made a no-brainer move in hiring Gibbs (kudos for bringing him out of retirement), and Gibbs finally shook some of losing stink we acquired since Gibbs 1.0 by getting us back to the playoffs 2 of the past 3 years. Don't forget, most of the current coaching staff was put in place by Gibbs and/or Double G.

Now Zorn has promptly made the offense--which had been missing link for the better part of a decade--start to click (kudos again for getting Zorn in place). Zorn has a fantastic attitude, and he obviously knows the QB position extremely well.

Left to his own devices, I still don't trust Vinny. I still see Gibbs fingerprints, but Zorn is looking like genius now, too.... so let's enjoy the ride!!

i don't check other team's blogs, but i have to imagine we are the most negative, in-fighting infested lot in the NFL. people, we're 4-1, we have a stud young QB rounding into form, a solid, fairly young defense, an awesome gamer of an RB, an innovative player's coach, and a great team chemistry. what's with all the downward flow? the glass is more than half full (at the moment), and looks to be for some time, let's stay positive!!!

HTTR

p.s. Willie, totally agree on CP-Champ trade

Posted by: Notorious_LMG | October 11, 2008 8:01 PM | Report abuse

Notorious_LMG, I do occasionally visit other teams blogs (it's fun to see how other fans see the Skins), and I can assure you--the Cowboys blog is a lot more negative than this one. Gurlz fans were ripping their team worse than Skins fans after that loss--and they continued ripping them during and after their lackluster win against the Bengals. They ripped the coaches, TO, Romo, their CBs...

Let the Gurlz lose this week, they'll be calling for Wade Phillips head. I think most of the negativity here is pretty much confined to the FO.

Posted by: Alan4 | October 11, 2008 8:27 PM | Report abuse

Alan, LMG, for parallels I would look at the fan bases of team which had a sustained run of excellence -- including at least one title -- in, say, the last 30 years (therefore in the memory of most fans) followed by a long championship-less drought. That's the recipe for the particular kind of bitterness in our fan base. You have the Cowboys, 49ers, maybe the Raiders... what other fan base is in the same predicament that we're in?

We remember what it feels like to see our team win the title... we remember it all too well. And that makes a long period of not winning the title seem more and more painful as it drags on.

(The Steelers and Giants have recently come off this list, and before that the Packers.)

Yes, I'm trying to justify the skepticism and negativity that many of us fans cling to. I think it's justifiable. I've indulged in it myself, and I reserve the right to do so again. But I don't relish it... I want this team to hoist the Lombardi again, and soon.

Hail to 'em.

but i have to imagine we are the most negative, in-fighting infested lot in the NFL

That's only because the Detroits, Bungles, and half-dozen other failed teams that have never tasted the sweet nectar of success don't have anything to infight about. They all completely agree that a bullet to the head is in order.

In all, I'd probably challenge your claim, but I'm waaay to lazy to go look at other teams' sites, and poring over the utterings of angst-ridden CowPie fans isn't my idea of fun anyway. The the ill-considered utterings of skin fans is quite enough, thank you.

But the jokes are occasionally amusing.

I think cload was referring to that minor gaffe where the new head coach didn't quiiiiiite know the team's colors. Or he sort of had the gist of the thing almost but didn't know their names. Hence, "maroon and black." Ahem.

At least we've gotten a chance to know and love the dude who committed that gaffe. I know I feel a hell of a lot better about him today than I did at the end of that Keystone Kops coaching search...

Dang, Nate, someone appears to be taking liberties...still me and hanging tough in South Florida. Loving life these days as skins return to familiar form of glory years. Z-man's playcalling is simply fantastic. He has a real knack for setting things up and keeping the other team off balance. I used to feel in Gibbs 1.0, and to a lesser degree with Norv, that we could put points on the board. Biggest surprise though is the gutsy 4th down calls. Parcells used to do it frequently with the gmen and it used to drive me nuts. It really deflates the other team.

Posted by: cosomfla | October 11, 2008 11:29 PM | Report abuse

Y'all are right about Cowpie fans being really negative. It's like they feel they have some God given right to win the SB every year. Heck with them. They got what they deserved when they picked up TO, the Team Obliterator, (a tip o' the hat to Skip Bayless there for that nickname.)

As for Sunday at FedEx: Skins 45, Rams 10. CP runs for 120+ and 2 TDs. JC throws for 350+ and 3 TDs with no INTs. Zorn rules. The Skins are for real.

And as far as VC's radio show, it sounds like it isn't all that earth-shattering anyway so it probably won't last. (We don't get much Skins' media out here in the heartland, so I haven't been able to listen in. It's all KC Cheeps, Denver Donkeys, and Dallas Cowpies around here. Bleagh! Thank God for the Internet, or I'd be totally out of touch with Redskins Nation.)

Part of the zen of Zorn, from his radio interview this week, was that the team would use home white jerseys for the first eight weeks, red jerseys for the last eight weeks [except for CowPies week].
He said/implied that the pants were free choice of team when Czaben asked if we would see the red pants this year. There was also some hint that, while he's not superstitious, some of the team might be.
