Random Stuff

A few players were available to the media before the start of practice at 5.

Marcus Washington got his braces off and was happy about that. No more ortho appointments. Gotta think the prospect of shredding your lips on your braces every Sunday wasn't a whole lot of fun either.

Not an expert but his choppers looked pretty darn shiny and straight to me.

Clinton Portis said that he kind of took the game for granted entering last season, was burned out, and vows to return to the CP of old. Says he is cool with sharing the load, though clearly believes he is the definite starter, and said that if he gets fewer carries that Ladell Betts some weeks, then that's okay, too.

Clinton also conceded that no matter how good he might feel right now coming off shoulder, hand and knee injuries, it won't mean much until he starts taking hits and seeing how his body holds up. He hasn't done anything really strenuous yet. His mental outlook is refreshed as well, he says.

Portis has no plans for more costumes, so it appears that the days of Dolla Bill or over for good.

As for other random observations:

Frosty The Punter must be feeling pretty good these days. Derrick Frost is the only punter on the roster.

Also, Shaun Suisham is being "challenged" by Tyler Fredrickson. Yeah, that Tyler Fredrickson, the one with all those game winning kicks a few years back ... No, seriously, this is a first year kid out of Cal, which explains why the word challenged is in quotes.

Oh, I thought CP said he was going to dress up again this year. But maybe the whole scandal around his dogfighting comments changed things...

From the Skins.com site:

Clinton Portis and Marcus Washington agreed to speak to the media during lunch hour. Once again, the team has a podium set up outside for pre- and post-practice interviews.

A Portis comment: "It won't be hard for me to mind my own business. I said earlier, 'I can't fight anyone else's battles.' I'm just going to mind my own business.

"I'm going to keep Clinton Portis out of trouble. I'm going to keep Clinton Portis focused. I'm going to keep Clinton Portis on top of his game. Outside of that, you can't ask me about the next man. I don't know how anybody else feels. I don't know what anyone else is thinking.

"The only thing I can control is Clinton Portis."

"Panel: Astronauts Flew After Drinking

By MARCIA DUNN
The Associated Press
Friday, July 27, 2007; 2:36 PM

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- After drinking heavily, an astronaut flew on a Russian spacecraft and another was cleared to fly on a space shuttle, according to interviews by a panel of outside experts, the panel's chairman said Friday.

In the case of the shuttle, the mission was delayed for mechanical reasons and the astronaut wanted to fly a jet from Florida back home to Houston, said Col. Richard Bachmann, head of the panel, created to assess astronaut health. He said he didn't know the outcome.

dealer, from a comment in the last post about Bulger ... I was surprised last season when I was picked for the Pro Bowl too. But he was the #3 QB after Brees and BBM in passing yards and had fewer picks that either of them. He has a lower rating than either, but I think its b/c he has fewer TD passes.

i hope that competition at kicker will push Suisham to get better. I just don't feel like I trust him to make long kicks under pressure, I know he had a good season when he was on the team last year, but my confidence isn't real solid for him, hopefully he will get a lot of opportunities to kick some long FGs in the preseason games

STRAHAN A NO-SHOW

Recently, there were strong rumors in league circles that Giants defensive end Michael Strahan might not report for training camp. Many scoffed at (and/or flat-out ignored) our information indicating that, once training camp opened, Strahan very well might not be there.

According to Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger, Strahan didn't show. But instead of calling the move a holdout, the official word is that Strahan is contemplating retirement.

"Last night, I talked to his agent and his agent said to me -- this was about seven o'clock -- [Strahan] was contemplating retiring," G.M. Jerry Reese said. "That's all I know right now. We haven't spoken to him. We'll get more details about it. We'll put him on reserve/did not report to camp."

Coach Tom Coughlin said that Strahan left a voice message last night, but did not mention retirement.

"I thought it was a little bit of a late notice, but that's the way the National Football League works sometimes," Reese said. "I just told [agent Tony Agnone] if [Strahan is] ready to retire we wish him God speed and we'll see what happens. Tony said, 'Jerry, he might wake up in the morning and say, "I want to play."' We're still trying to connect with him and get more details."

Our take? Strahan is holding out without holding out. He wants more money, and if he doesn't get it he simply won't play anymore. But in lieu of engaging in a formal holdout, which would subject him to fines in the amount of $14,000 per day and bonus forfeiture, Strahan is taking a path that would likely result in no financial consequence, if he ultimately calls it quits.

Sure, the team could still fine him until he files his retirement papers, but likely won't. Also, if the Giants pursue Strahan for the recovery of bonus money for a premature retirement but by all appearances did not demand repayment from TiVi Barber, the result disparity would expose the franchise to heavy criticism from the media and fans.

If Strahan retires, Reese hasn't ruled out bringing in defensive end Simeon Rice, who was cut by the Buccaneers on Thursday.

Strahan is scheduled to earn $4 million in base salary in 2007 and 2008. We've heard that he believes he was given assurances by former G.M. Ernie Accorsi that a new deal was coming, but that Reese has refused to honor those alleged promises.

Ok - now that the camp roster is set (even w/LL) how about some bets as to who WON'T crack the final roster in the following groups:

D-line:
Lorenzo Alexander
Alex Buzbee
Jared Clauss
Jamaal Freen
Justin Hickman
Bryant Shaw
Chris Wilson

D-backs:
Butler
Doughty (I'm pulling for him to make it)
Eubanks
Fox
Jimoh (Doh!)
Macklin
Prioleau
Stoutmire
Torrence
Westbrook

I included more Dbacks, because I think there are more wide open positions. Let the debate begin, and Long Live Landrys Lefty.

A reaper is a harvester, someone who reaps, that is, someone who cuts and gathers crops after they are grown.

A mechanical reaper or reaping machine is a mechanical, semi-automated device, a machine, that reaps. The Romans had invented a simple mechanical reaper that cut without the ears without the straw and was pushed by oxen (Pliny the Elder Nat. His. 18,296). This device was forgotten in the Dark Ages, during which period reapers reverted to using scythes and sickles to gather crops.

The modern mechanical reaper was invented in 1831 and patented by Cyrus McCormick in 1834 as a horse-drawn farm implement to cut small grain crops. It was made obsolete by the binder and later the swather.

One thing no one has mentioned in regards to Rice, is not only the sacks, but the forced fumbles. Last year he had a tough year, playing through injury, and only came away with 2 sacks from 9 games. But he still had 4 forced fumbles! How many did we have in total?

I'm not saying go out and get him regardless of the cost. But at least have a look, he might be a good buy AT THE RIGHT PRICE.
