Randy Thomas's Season Is Over (UPDATED)

The Redskins placed guard Randy Thomas, who suffered a torn triceps in Week 2, on IR today, ending his season. His is a key member of the team, a dominant pulling guard, and a fulcrum to the running game. Thomas tried to comeback last week against Chicago but was forced from the game, still unable to use his left arm properly, and he was not improving this week.

He will need more time to recover - a torn triceps is usually a season-ending injury - but the team kept a roster spot open for him this season hoping he might be able to help lead a December playoff charge. The Redskins lost starting right tackle Jon Jansen for the season when he broke his leg in Week 1 and the right side of the line has suffered since.

"In the back of my mind reality sets in that maybe I'm just not right," Thomas said. "We gave it a run, and the training staff did a great job getting me ready. I think I was probably as strong as I could be at the time. Me and (Coach Joe) Gibbs had a great talk, and we decided it was best for the team and me personally to let this thing heal. I have a long career to play and I don't want to jeopardize it."

The Redskins re-signed guard Rick DeMulling, who was with the team earlier this season, to take Thomas's roster spot. Thomas's loss can not be over-stated. The lack of a pulling guard has crippled the running game and while Jason Fabini has filled in admirably in Thomas's absence, few players have Thomas's combination of power - knocked defenders back off the line - and quickness/athleticism to charge into space, eliminate linebackers and open holes on either side of the line.

Thomas said he will undergo another MRI to make certain he did not do any more damage to his elbow/triceps and to verify if any additional surgical work is needed. He will also go back to extended rest to eliminate the swelling and said his work on strength and rehab will resume after that. He's expected to be fine for offseason workouts.

Big blow and now what this team needs to hear with the most critical game of the season just a few days away. Win one for Randy! You know he has to be bummed.

But for the last three games, we already have been playing without him much of the year so, line up and play!

How does a guy like DeMulling get paid? Is it league minimum pro-rated for the number of days he is actually here? What if the skins release him tomorrow, does he at least get a weeks worth of pay?

ouch. Looks like i was wrong about not putting him on IR (although I still think this will look terrible if Randy says he's fine in a week or 2...)

I think this is more of an emotional setback for the team than anything, at least this week. Everyone's feeling good about our chances and then this terrible news...

Posted by: Barno1 | December 13, 2007 12:01 PM | Report abuse

This does suck... Big Time... I don't think we should expect the running game to return this year... We need to pass to setup the run... PERIOD.

Seriously though, how did they not know if his arm was healed sufficiently to play at a sufficient level... Didn't they attempt to test his arm in blocking and contact drills in practice prior to just throwing him in the game against the Bears... This seems senseless, but maybe i'm just ignorant in this whole ordeal.

Posted by: EinVB | December 13, 2007 12:01 PM | Report abuse

Nertz.

Well, it sucks, but does it really change much? All we've lost is the hope that he'll return, which was kind of a reach to begin with.

Posted by: freakzilla | December 13, 2007 12:03 PM | Report abuse

Im with you EinVB,

Cmon, the coaching staff didnt know he could only last 5 mins against Chi town and figured he was all healed up and great to go and start the next 3-4 games. Our trainers are the most incompetent idiots in the league.

Posted by: Tyler84101 | December 13, 2007 12:04 PM | Report abuse

Putting Randy on IR at this time seems pretty pointless to me....we only have 3 more games.

EinVB, I think Randy said that he did not really test the arm in practice before he played last week.

Posted by: Lisa | December 13, 2007 12:05 PM | Report abuse

This speaks to my ignorance (my excuse: i live out of the country) but can someone please tell me what this means long-term? I know that Randy Thomas is exactly the type of guy we need blowing up holes for Portis, so, will he be back? How old is he, what is the prognosis, contract issues, etc?

Posted by: sheidt99 | December 13, 2007 12:06 PM | Report abuse

Maybe b/c the luck has been so bad this season ... but this doesn't seem to be as much of a tragedy to me as some of my other RI peepren (the peep's version of brethren). Randy Thomas played for much of the first half against the Bears, but not all of it. The Skins didn't come alive till right before the half. I'm not saying it wouldn't have been good to have him back, but its just that Fabini has essentially been the RG all season anyway, for better or worse. The surprise is the re-hire of DeMulling (but that is not as surprising as hiring the completely unknown QB when Bramlett was still available).

Posted by: dcsween | December 13, 2007 12:07 PM | Report abuse

Lisa... it sounds that way...

RT is on Redskins Raio right now talkin about it...

It sounds almost like they didn't want to test until they absolutely had too... and they were hoping for a miracle of some sort...

Posted by: EinVB | December 13, 2007 12:09 PM | Report abuse

Hey Barno,
When Thomas isn't able to play another full game this season...I'm sure our decision to leave him off of IR will look great!

We can't be looking down the road when the end of our season is in our face! Its the here and now that is important!

Posted by: Soup17 | December 12, 2007 05:14 PM

Wait a second! This story sounds familiar! Didn't this happen last year to a player the Redskins put on IR too early and he ended up coming back before the season was over? But the Redskins couldn't play him because they already ended his season officially. Wait for it.....was it...... David....Patten???

Oh, okay. I get it now. You think it will look better to put Randy Thomas on IR now, after we've held a roster spot for him for 13 weeks, when he is so close to returning, and when we need him the most? So that we can pick up world beater Jimmy Farris? Jimmy Farris???

Thomas then soon declares he's "finally healthy", but there's nothing we can do about it because the team has already officially ended his season. After slipping by the Giants without him, we then lose to the Vikes without a solid run game, and all hell breaks loose. Redskins Nation erupts in anger over the putting a nearly recovered starting lineman on IR only to give his spot on an unused wide receiver, the beat reporter blames Joe Gibbs for the incompetent decision, and this becomes the ugliest off season in recent memory.

Great idea. Simply great, Soup. Thank God there are some people out there who have some common sense...

Posted by: mack1 | December 13, 2007 12:28 PM | Report abuse

Injuries are going to happen in the NFL. Unfortunately we've lost a good part of our O line to injuries this year. But I think that injuries are more apparent for the Skins based on who they've acquired players prior to this last year.

Previously, they have used their draft picks to acquire established players. That leaves the back up positions staffed with players from lower in the draft. Most likely meaning that the back up are less talented players. The team has changed their method this year and should provide the team more depth going forward.

But we still need to beat the Giants with what we have. I'd love to be able to rub it in my best friend's face!

HTTR!

Posted by: BCBarney | December 13, 2007 12:32 PM | Report abuse

the reality is this doesn't change anything the skins have been doing for this season. it doesn't help the skins, but it doesn't hurt them either. they won't be any worse by putting him on IR.

get healthy RT, JC needs you for next season.

But on the plus side, we could start referring to them as Larry, Moe and Cooley.

Posted by: freakzilla | December 13, 2007 12:36 PM | Report abuse

This doesn't phase me. We need RT, but we've been without him all season, and I never thought we'd get him back at 100%.

I'm with Old School on this one. We need game changers. We need at least one guy on offense that worries opposing coaches. Cooley is getting there, after that it's a big drop-off.

Assuming we have just an ordinary level of catastrophic injuries next year, the O line will be fine with maybe one or two decent additions. No need to go (ahem) hog wild on a free agent in the draft.

Posted by: jvwright | December 13, 2007 12:56 PM | Report abuse

Once again, the Giants are extremely thin at safety. FS Gibril Wilson, who missed the past two games with a knee injury, did not practice and appears likely to miss at least another game. Wilson did do some running.

SS James Butler, out last week with a strained hamstring, also did not practice. To make matters worse, rookie Craig Dahl, an emergency starter last week, could not work because of a sprained ankle. "He can probably go if we pushed him," coach Tom Coughlin said.

Thought it made sense to wait for RT and see if he could come back. Not sure about the timing of bringing hi back. Bears game was just 4 days after Bills game, how much added healing could happen? Then this 10 day break. Seems like it would have made more sense to wait another 10 days. But it was always a bit of a longshot. Keeping Thomas off IR was always about his being able to contribute in the last game or two and then the playoffs. A gamble worth taking.

younger faster bigger....a couple of these additions maybe just one for now makes a huge difference on offense....makes our good young TE cooley much better makes Moss a very good #2 randle el same story....the good complementary guys are already here, a game changer makes them all even better....without we are middle of the road could win most could lose most....QB is the hardest to find i think we have done that, but his play and ours overall is elevated by adding a weapon he can throw or hand it to (RB).... ( i know portis is not likely to be going anywhere) we can win games with him, But i still would like a change to a bigger back if we stay power oriented running and or a legit third down option....

NCICURN is right, as us people from North Carolina almost always are.

Next year, we'll be healed up at O-line and we'll have great O-line depth and Soup will have a whole year of experience and plenty of time to tune up his game and hopefully we can find a playmaking WR or DE in the draft or free agency.

Until then, we have a good shot to win 8 or 9 games in what has been a pretty rough season. Things could be way, way worse.

New Rule. Do not blame the Trainers for the injuries. We have had the same Trainers for many years. This is Football and ....... The Texans have 18 guys on IR.

Also when healthy Moss is a game changer. Remember phily game one. But he gets hurt a lot. We need a big reciver who can get down field and rest Moss on some running plays and in the red zone.

For next year could we move Samules to RT and get a young LT? Janson could move inside as a backup like Jason F did this year.

Randy Thomas coming back this year was a longshot. The guy tore muscle from the bone. He rehabbed and gave it a shot but to be able to recover and gain strength back to be able to play at the same level seemed far fetched to me since it happened. We'll just have to suck it up with the likes of Fabini for the rest of the year. The draft better be all OL, DL, or CB's. But first lets take care of business in the Meadowlands so next week in Minny means something.

The coaches want the players on the field ASAP. The players want on the filed ASAP.

It's the trainers job to hold players back until they are sufficiently healed. Time after time this season, the trainers have allowed injured players on to the field only to have the players suffer futher injury.

The trainers need to take a long view and say no to the players and coaches. In the long run, this will help the team.

speaking of game changers on O, do we urge Daniel Snyder to fire up Redskins One at seasons end and make a big $ offer to one Randall Moss??? he's a game changer. imagine R Moss taking safeties deep and Soup working S Moss, ARE and Cooley underneath??? Throw in Portis/Betts and a healthy O-line.... & I bet that would get us more than 20 a game.

whatcha think!

Posted by: gregskins | December 13, 2007 4:23 PM | Report abuse

freakZ, that's the spirit! (and quite a disturbing image) ...

Personally, this Sunday I'd like to see some road grading up the middle ... BETWEEN Strahan and Umenurine ... Portis, Portis, Portis, Sellers, Portis, Betts, Portis, Sellers, Sellers, Portis, Portis. Right down the gullet of that guy everyone complains about the Skins letting go ... what's his name? Oh yeah, Pierce. Eat our backs, Antonio!

Force them to crowd the box ... then occasionally bloop one over their heads over the middle ... TOUCHDOWN.

I also would very much appreciate if Suisham got over his bad cold kicking ... and Frost does some solid boomage.

Finally, is one kick return touch down from Rock too much to ask for at this point in the season?

If our wedge guys can get into position, it could happen. If they can clear a lane in the snow, it's gonna be hard for the Jints KO team to cut back and get to Rock if he's got a straight-ahead head of steam on a slick field.

I would like to see former Giant, Sir Mix-a-Lot used in the Red Zone, I think just having a tall receiver in there will only help. I also think he did pretty well on special teams against the Bears, considering one of the knocks on him was that he wasn't much of a ST guy.

Gibbs is his only head coach who is in the NFL still. The rest are dead or out to stud.

Posted by: mul | December 13, 2007 7:10 PM | Report abuse

A few quick hits:

1) Let's get perspective. We shouldn't expect 3 in a row, but we are also not playing the 89 49ers, 85 Bears, 91 Skins here. By far the toughest game will be the Cowboys with or without their starters. That team is straight nasty. That is the game I am most worried about.

2) I have no idea why everyone is so enamored with the Vikings. The Vikings are mediocre. I watched Tavaris at the combine when he was drafted and he is absolutely awful. I don't care if he has had a nice couple of games. He is terrible. They will not get in. Vikes will go down to Chicago. Mark it.

3) Why is it now that everytime an athlete quotes the Bible etc. he is considered a "great kid" etc. All the coverage of Tebow made me sick. Why should I assume he is a great kid? He may be taking Ritty hits while taking steroids and orange juice. I hate this assumption nowadays. I will never forget the picture of Rex Grossman so drunk while he was a star at Florida and everyone talking about how great he is. What a knucklehead.

4) Also, I could completely see us getting in the playoffs and making it to the Super Bowl. Why not? This does not contradict point one. I'm just saying people should have a tempered view of both. If we get in, what do we get, Seattle and then the Cowboys who we would have already beat and are our hated rival? Then who, the winner of the Green Bay vs. Giants/Tampa game? I'm just saying, a lot has to happen, but if we get in, we will have won 4 in a row with teams we already beat or went down to the wire with in the playoffs.

Also, Sean Taylor was the greatest safety who ever played. I miss you Sean.

dbowen11,
Yep, it's right here in the rule book.

Dorf,
you really have lead a charmed life.
Haven't seen the kid on any wanted posters?

Dorf,

I would have added a few more h's to the shhhh for effect. i.e shhhhhhhhhhhhhh..h.h.h..h..h...h....h....h. See?

Was he an Eagles fan?

Sorry Adam!

Posted by: SMACK1 | December 13, 2007 9:51 PM | Report abuse

Dorf
Are you sure that he "stabbed" you in the chest with the remote? And are you sure he just wasn't whispering gentle nothings in your ear?

Posted by: ga8085 | December 13, 2007 9:54 PM | Report abuse

His name was Franswa and he was a stoner from Florida. He got kicked out school (the whole 3 strike rule). He was a former wrestler though, so he had the take down moves in his favor. The guy was a trip though.

I think he was a Dolphins fan so who knows, he may have really stabbed someone in the chest by now.

Posted by: Dorf | December 13, 2007 9:56 PM | Report abuse

Back in the day, remotes didn't have the nice smooth edges they have now. They weighed about 5 pounds and were lethal when wielded by an individual on PCP.

Posted by: SMACK1 | December 13, 2007 9:57 PM | Report abuse

Sounds to violent to be a stoner

Posted by: dbowen11 | December 13, 2007 9:58 PM | Report abuse

I do have a few regrets from college, but I will stick with my original story this time.

The code I live by now is "What Would Todd Collins Do?"

Its kept me out of trouble for the past week and a half. True story.

Posted by: Dorf | December 13, 2007 9:59 PM | Report abuse

Franswa or Francois? Franswa could be African. Francois is French, which would explain everything.

Posted by: SMACK1 | December 13, 2007 9:59 PM | Report abuse

Are you sure his name wasn't Josh?

Posted by: dbowen11 | December 13, 2007 10:00 PM | Report abuse

Dorf, would Todd Collins have one more beer?

Posted by: SMACK1 | December 13, 2007 10:02 PM | Report abuse

Josh Wayne something, no doubt.

Posted by: SMACK1 | December 13, 2007 10:03 PM | Report abuse

I think it was the French version... so yeah, it pretty much explains everything.
Todd Collins would be the DD and then save a litter of kittens from a burning house all while carrying a crippled child on his back.

Must be slow night... either that or you guys are all on my nuts. Poor Sams3... that guy was having a bad day.

Posted by: Dorf | December 13, 2007 10:16 PM | Report abuse

this rosenfels dude looks pretty good. i wonder what genius GM selected him in what round and how many years has he been in the league. and what his QB rating is in the 4th quarter.

fine i'll answer my own questions:

marty selected him as a skin in the 700th round and this is his 4th year in the league and he is the best rated QB in the 4th quarter in the league.

that's FOURTH year people! and FOUR different teams. jc has one more year to be as good as rosenfels (i can't belee i'm saying that), to have the best QB rating in the 4th quarter, to put 24 points in a game more than once in 20 starts.

Posted by: dealer | December 13, 2007 10:45 PM | Report abuse

actually i think this is his 5th year in the league so jc has two more years to catch up to rosenfels. no matter how many "systems" he goes thru. jc can never beat rosenfels as far as the number of systems the dude's played in.

Posted by: dealer | December 13, 2007 10:47 PM | Report abuse

God, Denver stinks. LOL

Posted by: JustMe | December 13, 2007 10:56 PM | Report abuse

rosenfels' making champ baley look like the guy who used to play for skins and also wore 24, i think his name was also champ

:) just playing. but yeah rosenfels picked on him over and over.

Posted by: pmedvene | December 13, 2007 06:39 PM

The Joon Rhee "nobody boddas me; nobody boddas me, eedah" commercial is one of my earliest memories on this earth.

That's either cute or sad.

I'm still trying to figure out the sister in law's husband's parents neighbor's uncles brothers dog thing.

My wife has a sister (my sister-in-law).
My sister-in-law has a husband.
My sister-in-law's husband has parents.
My sister-in-law's husband's parents have a house.
Within that house was tonight served a dinner of prime rib and various side dishes.

I didn't see the game. So where was B. Gumbel? Did someone at NFL Network finally have a moment of clarity?

Posted by: freakzilla | December 14, 2007 1:12 AM | Report abuse

Gumbel was ill. He'll be back on Saturday night. I'll be drunk and at a bar.

Posted by: PDiddy | December 14, 2007 1:59 AM | Report abuse

Do we have any graduates of the Jhoon Rhee school in our little blog community? :-) Maybe Barno? He seems like the Jhoon Rhee graduate type. I mean, what's the deal with picking on a 5-4 journalist like JLaC anyway? Does Barno want to be carted away to the principal's (Cindy) office? Can't we let our intrepid scribe have his nonsensical Baltimore bias? When has Baltimore ever surpassed DC in anything? Baltimore is like our (being a DC native, of course) ugly stepsister.

Funny you say that SMACK. In an effort for full disclosure, my middle name is Wayne.

On top of that my sports number has always been 17.

And the kicker...Do you know how many famous Wayne serial killers there have been?

16!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, and I am lefthanded!

Posted by: Zebraskins | December 14, 2007 6:43 AM | Report abuse

great, now we can add a serial killer to the list of RIer professions.

Doctors, Lawyers, Politicians, Playboys, male super models and now serial killers.

I am but a lowly teacher. No one would lie about that.

So I help film the high school football games and they are having their fall sports banquet this sunday night... Do I skip the banquet or the game? I was at the Giants game earlier this season and I left bitter and angry. Dare I get my hopes up again? Todd Collins hasn't started a game in like 14 years... I could be missing history here. That and I want to see Andre Carter make LBM make the "My kidneys!" face.

Posted by: Dorf | December 14, 2007 8:07 AM | Report abuse

Redskins 24, Giants 20!

Here's why:

ain't nobody expecting anything from the team except to roll over. They probably don't expect anything more from themselves. But a funny thing will happen once they step onto the field. They'll suddenly realize there's no pressure on them to do anything but choke. It's the Jints who are making their post-season plans. All we have to do is play. Throw it 60 times; who cares? Go for it on 4th down; so what? Get pass-rush happy. You'll get burned probably twice deep by Shockey and Burress, but if Eli keeps getting smoked, he'll be rattled big-time in the 2nd half. We know we can score on those guys from anywhere except the one. I like our chances! Remember our 12th man is Eli Manning!!!

Posted by: Soups1 | December 14, 2007 8:25 AM | Report abuse

I remember the Jhoon Rhee commercials.......he had a studio in Kensington! The commercials would always play on channel 20 during Ultra Man and Johnny Sokko. Anyone remember coming home from school and having "Captain 20" bring us the sci fi and cartoon shows?

Speaking of slinging, anyone know if there are any NFL rules against throwing snowballs during a play? Can a blitzer soften up the target with a couple o' slushy ones before he arrives?

Okay, time to drive to work. See you peeps in an hour or so.

Perfectly legal up here in Philly. Just ask the fans.

Looks like Hurricane Todd may be inappropriately named. Winter Storm System Todd is more fitting. Not quite at Blizzard statue yet, but there's still time.

My favorite local commercial:

"I didn't even know those homes were there!"

Dorf, you have me intrigued, wondering if somewhere in the 750 pages is a "Blizzard statue of liberty" play.

If so, I will guarantee Collins has run that play in his mind at least a hundred times, and that all those mental rehearsals will have him ready to run it to perfection on Sunday night.

You can't outrehearse Todd Collins.

I believe the Viscount has mentioned it a time or two... talking about champagne, a final bit of freedom from the Borg, and building his own kind of ark -- two blondes, two brunettes, two redheads...

Not that he came off braggy or anything.
