Redskins add Richmond Flowers as coaching assistant

Updated at 11:28 a.m.

Though the core of the coaching staff is complete, the Redskins are still adding members to their new corps.

The team announced today the addition of Richmond Flowers as a coaching assistant. Flowers is a former college teammate of offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan at Duke University and was present at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., last month. He has no previous coaching experience.

Flowers was seventh-round draft pick by Jacksonville in 2001 and spent most of that year on Dallas' practice squad. In 2002, he was on the Redskins' practice squad, and spent the 2003 preseason with Washington as well. He played three seasons at wide receiver for Duke and spent his final season of college eligibility with Tennessee-Chattanooga.

With the addition of Flowers, the team currently looks to have at least 17 football coaches. Last season, it had 15. And here's a fact that only Redskins' senior blogger Matt Terl could've found: Flowers is the third last-round NFL draft pick the Redskins have added this offseason, joining wide receivers coach Keenan McCardell and general
manager Bruce Allen.

If Flowers' name rings a bell, it's because you remember his father. Here's a great Sports Illustrated piece from 1997, written by William Nack.

Turner says CP isn't finished

New Redskins running backs coach Bobby Turner says Clinton Portis definitely has something left in the ol' tank. Dan Steinberg does the transcribing at D.C. Sports Bog.

Which tank for CP? To actually produce and run again with some purpose. Or to keep acting like an ass in the media running his mouth.

CP may not be finished, but hopefully he's finished in D.C.

Management HAS to say CP has a future... otherwise you tell the league before the draft that you're in the market for a RB.

But listen to Turner... "it has to be a perfect fit" If CP was a perfect fit before, would they have traded him?

And vision is key to a RB... before the concussion CP ran into and got tackled by Dockery's ass on about half of his carries...

CP = Sunday warrior
CP = Mon-Sat cancer

2200 carried cannot be erased from his legs... thanks, and good-bye.

All you JC17 haters need to understand it's not the dude's fault that he is such an inept quarterback. Recall last season:

After being handed the starter's job with no real competition or apparent need to prepare for the season ahead, he took most of the pre-season off to make sure that he would be "fresh" for the games that "really counted."

He then spent at least the first third of the regular season "trying to find his rhythm." The result -- no offensive production, some close losses to some pretty sad teams, and a couple of minor wins, courtesy of the field goal kicker. Despite a few flashy plays, for the most part, the offense couldn't find the endzone if their life and livelihood depended on it, even if you leashed a pack of seeing eye dogs to the entire unit.

JC17 then spent the next third of the season "trying to find something or someone to play for." These games were typically characterized by the other teams jumping out to big early leads, while the Redskin offensive unit looked out of sinc and downright clueless at times. JC17 would usually help the other team with an easy interception or fumble that would lead to points for the opposition. Then JC17 and his offensive squad would retire to the locker room at halftime and somehow decide that they might just need to come out and play the second half or something, at least so long as they were there anyway. So they'd start the second half with a half-respectable drive or two... before lapsing back into their lacksadaisical ways and sleep walking to another series of losses.

The final third of the season was given over to the payers "blaming others" for their own lack of performance and inability to get it done. Among the many excuses: too many injuries, a patchwork line, an ineffective ground game, a non-existent passing game, poor play calling, and turmoil in the coaching staff. But despite calling everyone else out, no one ever seemed to take responsibility for their own play and actions on and off the field. Again, another series of losses ensued.

Was this lost season entirely the fault of JC17 and his happy band of losers? No, of course not. He was only the guy taking most of the snaps, and failing to execute most of the plays.

But what in this long litany of loss stacked upon loss makes JC17 so needed, wanted or even tolerated for yet another year of failure? Get rid of the bum now!

It sort of becomes hate when people have to go on these long harangues about why Portis or Campbell, or whoever should go over and over, and over, and over, and over, again...

Sometimes when reading these comments I silently scream at the monitor: "Okay we get it. You don like 'X player', can you please get off that sh*t already?"

Posted by: RedDMV | February 17, 2010 12:02 PM | Report abuse

hahaha beans, when I first started posting here the Antonio Pierce was top two along with the Champ Bailey trade.

And the Champ bailey trade had happened like two full seasons before I started posting.

""Once again, stating that we don't need him implies that we can get rid of him. We are saying that we do need him because of his trade value. So we are saying that your statement is wrong.""

Well, then you entered the wrong discussion, PA.

Because the discussion was not about needing JC b/c he's live trade bait, but about "needing" JC because he was our "best" option at QB; and that's what I was disagreeing with.

Maybe next time you should read the posts and understand what the discussion actually is before weighing in.

I get it. Vic1 and Mr Redskin21 hate Campbell.

I don't know Campbell or Portis. I know them as players, their contract, and their value to the Redskins.

Portis: No value, because of contract
Campbell: Value, tender and get compensation or 1 year stop gap.

That is all, that should end the debate.

Those 2 arguments are the same. Why don't you try understanding logic before dismissing other viewpoints. If we need him then he is our best option. If we had a better option than we don't need him.

Posted by: PAskinsfan17 | February 17, 2010 12:16 PM | Report abuse

Diesel44,
The thing I don't get about hate, in life in general but for now we will stick to football. People who hate, as a result are willing to do something that will clearly make them weaker as a individual as a team whatever because of their irrational hatred.

In redskins terms those who hate Campbell are willing to let him go for nothing, just to get rid of him. Where as those who support him are are more neutral see that he has some value and you should never get rid of a valuable piece for nothing, that does not help your team long or short term.

Need him for what?
Best option for what?

To play quarterback for this team or to use as trade bait?

Those are 2 different things.

You are essentially saying that if he has value as trade bait, then that also makes him the best option to play QB for this team.

You think I don't understand logic?

One or the other constitutes a need. It can be either since you didn't specify but in this case we do need him for both. If we keep him then he has to play to keep his value. The only option that is better for us is getting a first rounder from someone matching our tender. That is unlikely to happen. So we do need him and he is our best option. You can't state that he's not our best option then refuse to name a better option. You made a statement now you have to defend it. Who is a better option to start at QB next year?

Posted by: dcsween | February 17, 2010 12:34 PM | Report abuse

Based on the latest round of updates on some of the draft mockery sites, projections are changing around at the top of the draft ... based on a projection that (1) Gerald McCoy will go before Ndamakong Suh and (2) that the Rams will not take the best player at position but rather a Bulger replacement ... which I think might mean that one of the teams that picks between slots 6 through 9 could actually be interest in trading up to Number 4, either for the unpicked QB (Bradford or Clausen) or for Suh ... which would be good for the Skins (esp. if the Rams take Bradford).

Shanahan accepted a scholarship offer by Carl Franks of Duke University, but chose to transfer as redshirt freshman to the University of Texas at Austin. Shanahan played wide receiver on a Longhorn team that featured future NFL players Roy Williams, Cedric Benson, Bo Scaife, Mike Williams, Quentin Jammer, and future college coach Major Applewhite. Shanahan also became close friends with Chris Simms.
