Colts defeat Redskins 27-24

Updated 12:42 a.m.

4th Quarter

Some timely plays from its defense and a crucial stop gave the Washington Redskins a chance to win late, but in the end the Redskins couldn't come through with their usual last-second heroics and fell, 27-24, to the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday night.

Two plays into the quarter, the Redskins got another big play from a linebacker when Pro Bowler London Fletcher forced a Joseph Addai fumble on the Redskins' 23-yard line, and LaRon Landry recovered.

The turnover halted the Colts' drive, but Washington's offense could not convert the play into points. On third and one, a pitch play to Torain resulted in a three-yard loss, and the Redskins punted.

Indianapolis ook over and Manning hit Dallas Clark for 24 yards on second down to move into Washington territory. The Colts kept moving behind running back Mike Hart, who replaced the injured Addai, but the drive stalled and Vinatieri hit a 33-yard field goal to make it a two-possession game, 27-17.

The Redskins took over deep in their own territory needing a big drive, and the offense came through.

McNabb completed eight of nine passes to start the drive, finding Moss, Armstrong, Fred Davis, Keiland Williams and Joey Galloway to move Washington from its own eight to the Colts 19-yard line.

Williams then rushed for 14 yards to set up first and goal from the five-yard line, but after rookie left tackle Trent Williams was called for holding, Washington faced first and goal from the 15.

McNabb threw to Moss for seven yards and on the next play found Williams for an eight-yard touchdown, the first of the rookie running back's career.

The defense had not been able to slow Peyton Manning all game, but needing a stop, it forced three consecutive incompletions - including two big pass break-ups by Phillip Buchanon and another from LaRon Landry.

Washington took over on its own 38-yard line, and McNabb hit Armstrong for five yards on first down. McNabb was sacked for five yards on the next play to set up a crucial third and 10. Two incompletions gave Indianapolis the ball back, but Washington's defense again got a stop and got the offense the ball back.

On first down, however, McNabb threw an interception and Washington fell, 27-24.

3rd Quarter

Twice the Redskins needed big plays to slow momentum and stay in the game, and linebackers Brian Orakpo and Lorenzo Alexander twice boosted the team. A pair of forced fumbles set up two scores and Washington went into the fourth quarter trailing by just seven despite a relentless Colts offense.

Looking for a spark after punting on its first drive, Washington was lifted by Pro Bowl linebacker Orakpo. On second and five from the 21, Orakpo rushed around the end and, despite being held by his facemask, stripped Manning of the ball. Andre Carter recovered at the 13-yard line.

The Redskins offense took over needing a touchdown, and McNabb's two completions to Cooley gave Washington a first and goal on the one. Ryan Torain plunged in from there to pull the Redskins within three points, 17-14, with 11:18 remaining in the third quarter.

The Colts needed less than two minutes to respond.

Against a defense with just one down lineman, Addai broke off a 46-yard run on first down and three plays later went right through the middle of the defense for a 13-yard touchdown run to increase the lead to 24-14.

The drive took just four plays to cover 66 yards in 1 minute 57 seconds.

Washington took over and picked up a first down on a nice play by Mike Sellers, who broke several tackles, but the offense stalled and punted.

In desperate need of a big play, the Redskins got it from Lorenzo Alexander, who put his helmet on the ball to force a Kenny Moore fumble on the return. Byron Westbrook recovered to give Washington the ball on the Colts' 39-yard line.

The Redskins offense took back over and Ryan Torain rushed for 25 yards, but McNabb was eventually sacked on third down and Washington settled for a 39-yard field goal from Graham Gano to pull within 24-17.

Indianapolis ended the quarter again moving the ball effortlessly. Manning connected on three straight passes to open the drive

2nd Quarter

A missed field goal was one of the opportunities the Redskins could not convert in the first half and Peyton Manning continued to pick apart the defense as Washington went into the half trailing Indianapolis, 17-7.

As the second quarter began, the Colts continued to move the ball easily. Manning hit Garcon for 11 yards, then found Reggie Wayne for 12 more two plays later. Another short run preceded a 14-yard pass from Manning to Garcon, and two plays later Manning found Austin Collie for a five-yard touchdown pass that gave the Colts a 14-7 lead.

The drive covered 84 yards but took just 3 minutes 38 seconds.

Washington punted on its next drive and Manning and the Colts again went to work. Alternating between runs and passes for the first six plays of the drive, the Colts moved from their own 14-yard line to the Washington 34, with Manning hitting Collie and Wayne for gains of 17 and 18.

Manning threw to Dallas Clark for six yards on third and four to keep the drive alive, but an incompletion set up third and 8 and McNabb's six yard pass to Clark forced a field goal. Adam Vinatieri missed the 38-yard attempt wide right, his first miss of the season.

Washington again went three and out on its next drive, and the Colts offense took over on the 22-yard line and went back to work.

Manning hit Collie for nine yards to start the drive, and Joseph Addai rushed for 14 yards on the next play. Garcon made an amazing one-handed catch on the sideline for a 21-yard gain, but facing a third and 1 on the 25-yard line, LaRon Landry made a huge tackle of Addai to stop him short and force the Colts to settle for a 43-yard field goal that extended the lead to 17-7.

The Redskins took over with two minutes remaining and moved the ball in the hurry-up offense. McNabb completed four consecutive passes - two each to Cooley and Moss - but after two incompletions the Redskins were forced to try a field goal. Graham Gano's 48-yard attempt missed wide right.

The Colts drove down the field in the final seconds of the half and attempted a 48-yard field goal, but the kick was blocked and the Redskins went into the half trailing by 10.

First quarter:

A turnover put Washington in an early hole on Sunday night against the Indianapolis Colts, but the Redskins came back with an 89-yard drive late in the quarter to tie the game at seven.

After Carlos Rogers dropped an interception on the Colts' first drive - a play that was challenged by Indianapolis - Indianapolis punted and Washington took over on its 41-yard line.

The Redskins converted two first downs on their first drive, the first on a 12-yard pass from Donovan McNabb to Santana Moss on third and 11, the second on a two-yard run by McNabb on third and 1. But following the second conversion, McNabb was picked off by Jerraud Powers on a slant route.

One play later, Colts quarterback Peyton Manning made Washington pay for the turnover. He connected with Pierre Garcon for a 57-yard touchdown straight down the seam to give the Colts an early 7-0 lead.

After trading three-and-outs, however, the Redskins offense clicked on a balanced drive that featured some of the strongest running of the season by Washington.

Ryan Torain rushed four times on the drive for 33 yards - including a nine-yard touchdown run that capped the drive, which consumed more than five minutes.

While Torain was impressive, especially on one 16-yard run, McNabb also connected with several receivers to move the ball. McNabb found Cooley for 11 yards on second and 9 early in the drive, then connected two straight times with Anthony Armstrong for gains of six and 12 yards.

An 18-yard completion to Santana Moss followed the 16-yard run by Torain to move Washington into the red zone, and Torain took a screen pass nine yards to set up second and 1 from the nine. The second-year back took the handoff and got outside before juking the safety and getting into the end zone to tie the score, 7-7.

Indianapolis took over on its next possession and immediately started to drive. After Kareem Moore dropped a sure interception on the second play of the drive, the Colts drove to the 46-yard line before the quarter ended.

Thanks we knew about this 2 freaking hours ago.

Need McNabb to step it up. His accuracy killed us last game in the 1st half and is rearing it's ugly head again.

No one is getting to Manning. Dropped interceptions. McNabb's been too erratic and impatient. All things considered, down by 10 at the half is not too bad a position to be in.

Posted by: TWISI | October 17, 2010 10:04 PM | Report abuse

Lucky to be only down 10.

We get the ball and need to feature Torain more and McNabb needs to be in the same are code as the receiver.

On D we need to get pressure and DHall and Moore need to cover some one.

Catching the ball on D would be a bonus.

His accuracy is not great but his pocket presence and overall play is just so much better than what this team has had in a long time. The skins are close to becoming a top 10 - 15 team in this league, a vast improvement over the past few years.

Shanahan did not call a dive play on 3rd and 1?
Why weren't we ramming the ball down their throats???

great call, half back toss on 3rd and 1. At least we aren't playing the colts... Such a bad play call. How about we run out of Shotgun???

Posted by: swowra | October 17, 2010 11:01 PM | Report abuse

I don't give a hoot what anybody says, the play calling and coaching on the offense side of the ball is horrendous. A sweep with a fast agile defense on 3rd and 1. There has been a number of bad calls throughout the season. Not activating AH???? The players are making the opportunities mot the coaches.

With how much parity there is this year in the NFL, they are a legit wild-card contender.

This defense is false.

This D played their best game of the season against the Eagles when AH played his best game of the season.

Instead of getting his fat arse in the lineup to put some pressure on Peyton, they deactivate him and put him in the owners box and decide to have the linemen do a tap dance around the line of scrimmage.

FAIL.

They needed to do the opposite. They needed to have some stud DTs putting their hands in the dirt and getting to Peyton up the middle instead of hopping around flirting with each other while Peyton carves up the secondary and the RBs get 6 yards a carry.

Without AH playing well, this defense is so weak up the middle it's embarassing.

It wasn't the playcall, it was McNabb's brainfart decision to go deep.

It was a stupid decision, stupid read and a horribly overthrown ball.

That's the kind of decision you make when it's 2nd and 1 in the middle of the second quarter and you've got some down/distance/time to play with; not when it's 4th and 10 and the game is coming down to that one single play.

Posted by: p1funk | October 18, 2010 12:08 AM | Report abuse

tough loss for us, but

this one goes out to MrIrvinAA, tampax, 10"petersuck, and BlueStarOintment,

Cowboys wide receiver Miles Austin had a tough first half. He was flagged for excessive celebration when he leapfrogged Williams in the end zone after the first touchdown. Then, he got called for pass interference on what would've been his 68-yard touchdown catch and run when his one-handed shove of Asher Allen sent the Vikings cornerback falling to the turf.

Last week, Cowboys right tackle Marc Colombo slipped while trying to chest bump a teammate after a touchdown and got a penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct because of the NFL rule that prohibits going to the ground to celebrate.

"REDSKINS look terrible. REDSKINS have allowed 469 yards of offense. REDSKINS have to hold onto those opportunities, PEYTON doesn't give them up very often. REDSKINS don't have a prayer."

Let's see 27-24, and a damned fine ball-game. Wish I could have had SONNY,SAM and ........what's his name, instead. What a bunch of frickin' homer's.

BTW saw my man LO-A on the tube getting a jaw massage from COLLINSWORTH and what's his face? At least they got one thing right tonight.

p1funk- you're my boy and it has nothing to do with being a Terp.

Cov 2-

Dhall needs to press the WR and carry him to the S. He did neither and that's on him. LL30 had no chance after the way Dhall played it, it's a 2 man game in the cover 2. Dhall was also the MOST suspect guy in the secondary tonight, bar none.

Posted by: Diesel44 | October 18, 2010 12:43 AM | Report abuse

One more point-

Could you imagine if AH was on the field against the Peyton and his no huddle? He would have joined his cousin our cost us out TOs we didn't take advantage of with McNabb's inaccuate throws.

Posted by: Diesel44 | October 18, 2010 12:47 AM | Report abuse

Is it possible that we can get some DB's on the roster that can actually catch the ball? The fact that Rogers has been dealing with this since his rookie year is ridiculous. The guy has hands of stone and the insticts of a lineman when it comes to catching the ball. Moore also has a case of the dropsies. I am not going to say I could do any better but these guys are paid to make plays like this and when you are going up against a guy like Manning, you can't give him additional chances.
