Vikings defeat Redskins 17-13

By Paul Tenorio

Updated: 4:08 p.m.
Fourth Quarter

No play was bigger than a block in the back by rookie Perry Riley, who pushed a defender as rookie Brandon Banks ran by on what would have been a 77-yard punt return touchdown to give the Redskins a lead.

Instead, Washington was forced to try another offensive drive and could not put one together. The Redskins fell at home 17-13 to drop to 5-6.

The Redskins couldn't turn Banks' big kickoff return at the end of the third quarter into seven points, but were able to get into position for Graham Gano to hit a 40-yard field goal that pulled Washington back within seven with 13:34 remaining in the game.

Washington forced a three and out on the next drive, aided mostly by Albert Haynesworth and Phillip Daniels stuffing Jeff Dugan for no gain on third and inches.

The Redskins took over and McNabb immediately hit a wide open Anthony Armstrong for a 45-yard gain - a play that might have gone for a touchdown if the pass had not been underthrown - but the Redskins could muster just one more yard and settled for Gano's 42-yard field goal to pull to within 17-13 with 10:02 remaining.

The Redskins forced a punt and Banks made several defenders miss before sprinting down the left sideline, but the return was nullified by the needless penalty and the Redskins eventually punted again.

The Vikings took over and ate up the clock, QB Brett Favre sealed the win with a 10-yard run on third and 8.

Third Quarter

The Vikings used a strong opening drive and a fortuitous interception to go into the final quarter with a 17-7 lead.

While the Vikings struggled after losing Adrian Peterson in the second quarter, they looked much more efficient opening the second half. They put together a nine-play, 74-yard drive to take a 14-7 lead, mixing runs by Peterson's replacement, Toby Gerhart, and short passes from Brett Favre.

The key play of the drive was Favre's 29-yard pass to Visanthe Shiancoe on third and 1 from the 43-yard line, which kept Minnesota's drive alive and set up first down from the Redskins 14-yard line. Three plays later, Gerhart carried up the middle for a five-yard touchdown to lift the Vikings to a one touchdown lead.

Washington gained just 11 total yards on its next two drives. But Minnesota also failed to move the ball.

On the first play of the Redskins third drive, McNabb looked for Santana Moss, but the ball went through Moss's hands, off his chest and bounced in the air before it was intercepted by E.J. Henderson at the Redskins' nine-yard line.

Washington's defense buckled down and on third down, Andre Carter and Albert Haynesworth sacked Favre. The Vikings had to settle for a 31-yard Ryan Longwell field goal.

Brandon Banks returned the ensuing kickoff 65 yards to the Vikings' 28-yard line, but McNabb was sacked on first down on the last play of the quarter.

Second Quarter

The second quarter had significantly less offensive action than the first, with neither the Redskins nor Vikings able to replicate the success of their opening drives.

The Vikings also had to be concerned after star running back Adrian Peterson left in the middle of the quarter after appearing to get his leg stuck under Redskins linebacker Lorenzo Alexander on a first down run.

The Vikings punted on their first drive after London Fletcher defended Visanthe Shiancoe far downfield on a third-and-5. Albert Haynesworth hit Brett Favre as he threw.

The Redskins had two drops on their next possession, preventing them from keeping the drive alive, but on the next drive Haynesworth and Fletcher again blew up a third down play - this time a run on third and inches, to force another punt.

Washington took over and showed some life offensively.

An 11-yard pass to Santana Moss on third down kept the drive moving, and a 15-yard pass to Moss put the Redskins in Vikings territory. The drive stalled, however, and Washington punted. The Vikings went three and out and Washington took over after a 14-yard return with just 48 seconds remaining, but did not move the ball and the teams went into the half tied at seven.

First Quarter

The Redskins opened the game with perhaps their best drive of the season. Donovan McNabb connected on all eight of his passes for 84 yards, five different receivers caught passes, the Redskins converted all four of their third down attempts and the offense even showed a new wrinkle: Brandon Banks carrying out of the Wildcat formation.

The Redskins had big plays on a couple third downs - a diving 14-yard catch by Chris Cooley on third and 2 and Roydell Williams breaking a tackle for a 19-yard gain on third and 12 - to keep the drive alive. McNabb then capped the eight-play, 83-yard drive with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Fred Davis in the corner of the end zone.

Minnesota answered with an equally impressive drive, led mostly by powerful running back Adrian Peterson.

Redskins defenders struggled to bring Peterson down. He had one catch for 34 yards and carried three times for 18 yards, including a five-yard touchdown run on which he carried several Redskins defenders into the end zone.

The Vikings needed just seven plays over 3 minutes 26 seconds to even the score at 7-7.

The Redskins went three and out on the next drive and punted. The first quarter ended with the Vikings picking up a first down at their own 29-yard line.

try helping mcnabb out. stop dropping passes that hit you in both hands, cooley and moss.

that's the difference between winning and losing.

Nice listening to the Skins game today. Good announcing team. No Aikman or Moose or any other Blowboy.

Too many mistakes on offense in the first half (drops, penalties). Get that corrected and the skins should win by 10.

When will Snyder and the coach du jour understand "You cant win games with no defense" Wide open receivers + no tackling + little pressure + allowing to be man handles at the line of scrimmeage = TD's and losses!

I called it early in the week, only I thought the losss would come at the hand of Favre not the running game and 2nd string at that. I know its not over but these guys are playing below even their already poor level.

Skins doing what they do best... Fall apart! Last week the Titans wanted the loss more than the Skins. This week not the case. Being out classed and outcoached by "interim" Vikes coach - AT HOME!!

McNab has no one open. That is because Vikes are calling the correct defense. Why? Skins are predictable. Coaching 101.

I suppose you think benching McNabb was good for this team right?

Just can't beleive how little talent we have on the off and def. We simply do not have the skill players to win on a regular basis in this league. I thought things would change with Shany but it looks like our streak of bringing in older or underperforming stars continues. It looks like another five years of subpar football. How long can the franchise lose like this and keep its fan base?

If I study o-line calls and get really good at them, do you think the Skins would give me a job as center? Even though I don't have the physical capability to play center, I think I might still have a shot at the job, since casey rabach obviously can't play the position but is still employed.

I can't figure out why rabach is still starting...regardless of how good he is at calling out the protections, he's pretty consistently bad at actually protecting.

That the best you got? Sorry if some of you people dont like my posts but this team still stinks. When you have been a staunch fan and watching them for as long as I have, you recognize all too familiar patterns.
Even with some brief periods of hope like we just saw with Banks, They will still find ways to lose. This team lasck heart. Plain and simple.

Too bad if some of you dont see it.

@ Beep-Beep:
Nice catch on my typo. Hows the Koolade today?
I too am passionate about my Skins but that does not blind me. So they will go 5-6 and then 5-7. I am sick and tired of the forever changing of the guard and the subsequent changes to the offense and defense over the years. The result? Nothing Nada. I for one am not satisfied with 7-9 or 8-8 seasons. The Skins will be lucky to get to 6-10. Snyder will get frustrated, fire the Shanahans (If he can) and start over.... again. This cycle will never end under Snyder.

So get a clue and see this team as it really is.

Can't say I'm surprised. Every week I got to tune into this crap. Same stats every week: McNabb 1TD 1 INT, sacked 4-5 times and one key under/overthrow that could have been six. Playcalling day and night comparing the 1st and 2nd half on offense. Clearly the Vikes adjusted, and the Skins did nothing to counter. Letting Favre run for that first is remiscent to Delhomme dragging D. Hall for a first down last yr.

Well looks like the Skins just cant stand prosperity. They just do not know how to take control of any situation and control their own destiny. How in the hell do you allow a coach (interim coach at that) to come into your house and out-coach someone who supposedly posesses all of this coaching finess. I think what this win for the Vikings says is that if the pieces are in place, all that is needed is a swift kick in the nether-region and let us play as a unit. It's gonna take another season or two for the Skins to get the pieces in place and stop going for the quick fix. With a bit of thinking along the lines of reality, we can forget about this playoff thing. We are gonna be NFC East bottom feeders along with dem stinking cow-pies. Hail!!! What there is to hail for I don't know.

Post of the day for me.

Despondent is the only way to describe feelings right now.

How does that call get made?

The player was moving himself 15 yds out of the play and was out of control when he got hit on the SIDE!

You throw that you have to flag the guy who hit Carriker in the neck on Favre's 1st down to end the game.

Awful. Shameful officiating.

This for some odd reason feels like the worst loss in forever.

this week you blame this on the WRs. Moss had drops and the int is on him. Armstrong drops one and Cooley drops one. Also, the offensive went from being WIDE open to being compact most of the second half! And SOMEONE please tell me why Haynesworth only sees the field on 3rd down?!?! Everytime he came in, he did something!! You pay this man 100 million and don't play him!! Sorry a** defensive coordinator. Play him every down!! This isn't Madden 2010 Karen, you freak. That was a fine play by McNabb.

no rachel, we was getting hit as he threw, learn the game before coming on here and making a fool of yourself.

Posted by: WaitingGuilty | November 28, 2010 4:19 PM

Wrong.

Watch the play again. The ball is well away before he gets hit. He could have stepped up but didn't want to take the hit.

Posted by: edvar | November 28, 2010 4:33 PM | Report abuse

This whole game, it felt like the Skins were finding ways to lose.

Posted by: zcezcest1 | November 28, 2010 4:33 PM | Report abuse

Waiting guy - you just made a fool of yourself. That is why she said, "if he had gotten the ball out quicker," after all the defender wouldn't have been on DM5 while DM5 was throwing if DM5 got the ball out more quickly. DUH.

Posted by: JesusFreakKaren

Obviously it's too hard to understand for some people. Would the defender be able to impact that throw had he gotten it out quicker? Because Armstrong was open way before that.

The worst part about the last penalty was that they threw that flag as Banks was going into the endzone...what does that tell you?

I've watched it and re-watched it. If he takes a hit rather than gunning it falling back on pure arm strength, it's an INT.

Yeah that's on McNabb. He's done it several times this year. McNabb threw it late and still could have stepped into and didn't.

I'm well aware of the history, wiseacre. JKC Jr. had been running the team into the ground before Danny Boy came along. JKC Sr. knew Jr. was an ineffectual boob, and that's why the trust was set up that way.

Posted by: NickBarking | November 28, 2010 4:36 PM | Report abuse

McNabb should have hit Armstrong for the TD. He underthrew it because he was afraid of getting drilled, so he didn't step into the throw. And he got hit AFTER he released the pass.

That said, he played well overall and there were plenty of culprits today.

This is comical, blaming a QB for a 49 yard completion. Those are hard plays to make and he was getting ransacked all day, can't believe you guys put any blame for that on McNabb.

Afraid of getting hit?

yeah, sure.

McNabb is a joker. He acts as if he is a top rated quarterback and all he is is a never was. + we lost 2 draft picks for this loser. This guarantees us that we will never improve. Snyder is a cancer growth that needs to be forced to sell this team. The NFL should have never allowed such a loser from owning the team. In some ways the owners conspired by allowing the sale to a loser who they knew very well was going to run the team into the ground. Snyder got lucky during the dotcom boom selling calling cards when he sold his company snyder communications. He has no skills what so ever.

I make that play. Probably don't survive the hit but AA was wide open. McNabb has done it all year, this isn't his 1st time so he doesn't get the benefit of the doubt.

I'd put his throw by Mcnabb #5 on the list.
1. OL- zero push, just a sive in the interior
2. DL- barely servicable. just fell for another PA.
3. Perry the LB
4. Dropped passes
5. McNabb's gotta hit wide open receivers in stride.

What happened to the creative play calling of the first quarter? It may not have gotten big gains, but the wildcat was keeping the DL on its heels. Kyle was too conservative against the Lions that way too. They've got to find ways to compensate for their week interior OL.

Diesel....

I like you, but now you've gone rogue!

Saying you would have made that play just made my day....Now I can settle down and hope we run the table instead of arguing with my fellow fans and lamenting a terrible flag that negated a play made by a star on the field (Banks).

It can't get any more absurd than us fans saying we could have literally done better!

But you should go to open tryouts next Wednesday....for sure.

I don't understand why any of you are pointing fingers anywhere other than where it deserves to be pointed!!!

The Skins won that game and it was taken away by the officials! That was NOT a block in the back! I've seen countless returns in my life and far worse infractions are not called. The Skins won that game. This team needs to get better, no question. This game however was just plain robbery.

And you didn't even mention that fact that no one knew about the flag until after he reached the endzone and did the dance!! Stockon even said "no flags!" and then... long and behold we see a flag on the field.

he pulled that one out of his a**. They called that but missed the BLATANT facemask on BB?! That is complete BS.

That's the danger in living off these low-scoring, tight scrums. One bad call, one missed block, one error... and you lose.

Eventually, the offense is going to have to win some games for this team the be more than mediocre. And it's been that way with this team for a looooong time now.

I do wonder how much patience Snyder will have with Shanahan, because the constat turnover is a major part of why this team has been stuck at 0.500 (with an up or down season now and then) for so long.

Buffalo has lost for the 3rd time in OT this year. Too bad they are not playing the Redskins this year because the skins are so accommodating to losing teams. They find pleasure in having other teams accomplish a "First". Like allowing the vikes to score on their first possession in the 1st and 2nd half for the first time this season and giving intern coaches their first win, etc. The skins are soooooooo nice.

wonder what the record is for any name?

Our defense lack talent (real young NFL talent) I agree, but our scheme hurts us the most. QB's with high int ratings don't throw as many on us because we don't put pressure on the QB. In addition, we play soft on the corners. So, if you get to the QB, he always have a soft outlet.
Also AL says our D played a good game because we only gave up 17 points. When you have 6 minutes left in the game and you offense never touches the ball again, your defense sucks.

That's all you have to know.

As much as I like Zo, did you notice how he had no idea what to do when Farvre rolled out and got that last 1st down to kill us? He had contain, yet turned his back and RAN AWAY from Farvre, instead of attacking the play and dumping Bret for the no gain.

We just don't seem to be very aggressive on D...

Actually, we lost to last year's NFC Champion runner-up.

Despite our complaints and observations about their record, the vikes are a talented team that just lost it's way this year.

Remarkably calm up here considering how badly the 'Skins sucked today: a few end-of-the-worlders, the usual claque of "devout fans" who are only happy when the Redskins lose, couple of Shananan, McNabb, or Snyder haters -- but no one's heart is really in it. I think peeps have essentially given up. Focus will now turn to next April's draft.
