Redskins Are in a 10-0 1st-Quarter Hole

Thought by many to be entering the night with a legit shot at making the 53-man roster, running back Anthony Alridge did himself few favors, fumbling a kickoff return and likely dooming himself to the waiver wire.

Alridge fielded the Jaguars' first kickoff of the game from about five yards in the end zone and opted to run it out. He was met quickly by Jacksonville's Tyron Brackenridge, who knocked the ball loose. Tiquan Underwood recovered for the Jaguars and ran it in 3 yards for the touchdown.

Alridge was fumble-prone in the early days of camp - including a memorable one in the scrimmage - and missed significant time with a toe injury. But he has fans in the front office and seemed to have a shot at the roster - if the team chooses to keep five backs and if Alridge could get through Thursday's game mistake-free.

After one quarter, the Jaguars led 10-0.

The Jaguars got on the scoreboard first, marching 70 yards down the field on the game's opening possession. Going against only seven of the Redskins' regular starters, quarterback David Garrard was 6-for-6 on the drive for 40 yards; mostly short passes, though he did hit tight end Marcedes Lewis for a 24-yard gain. Josh Scobee's 23-yard field goal provided the game's first points. The Jaguars converted two of their three third-down attempts on the drive.

The Redskins lone drive of the quarter entered Jaguars territory and nearly found the end zone. But on 3rd-and-13 from the Jacksonville 43-yard line, Jason Campbell appeared to have Antwaan Randle El open and mid-stride downfield. The ball went right through Randle El's hands, however, and Washington was forced to punt.

On the quarter, Campbell was 4-of-6 for 33 yards. Devin Thomas had two receptions (12 yards) and Malcolm Kelly (11) and Randle El (10) had one apiece. Ladell Betts had seven yards on three carries.

To end the quarter, the second-string offense entered the game. Replacements included Chase Daniel taking Campbell's spot and Marcus Mason lining up at running back.

A couple of other bubble guys had big plays: defensive end Rob Jackson forced a Jacksonville fumble (which the Jags recovered) and linebacker Darrel Young made a big tackle on the game-opening kickoff.

Is it wrong that I love listening to Theisman do color?

He's the ultimate homer. If I weren't a Skins fan, he would probably drive me up the wall. But as it is, I love him.

Mason > Alridge
Brenan > Daniel

wow!! bad tackling!!! 5 guys missed... these guys on the bubble aren't doing anything to make the team!

Posted by: rachel216 | September 3, 2009 8:31 PM | Report abuse

The Jags #11 is better than ours.

Posted by: isnadd | September 3, 2009 8:31 PM | Report abuse

well looks like alotta guys dont want to make the team.

Posted by: chrislarry | September 3, 2009 8:32 PM | Report abuse

Tryon can't cover and he can't tackle.

I know he's Darrell Green's guy, but I don't understand why they keep him out there...

Posted by: JohnnyRyde | September 3, 2009 8:32 PM | Report abuse

For his next trick, Jack Del Rio will shoot a manatee.

Posted by: freakzilla | September 3, 2009 8:32 PM | Report abuse

Do the Jags realize this is a pre season game? Still having the starters in. wow

Posted by: jm220 | September 3, 2009 8:33 PM | Report abuse

But where are the people saying Chase should make the team over Colt? They're gone because he just fumbled.. at least when Colt got sacked like 15 times he didn't fumble. Now COlt just needs to go out there and manage the game.

Posted by: rachel216 | September 3, 2009 8:33 PM | Report abuse

Westbrook wont make the team this year.. Missed the tackle.. and the onthe 2-point coversion that was his man....

Posted by: cocodc1 | September 3, 2009 8:33 PM | Report abuse

Yea, Tryon sucks. I like Byron Westbrook.

Posted by: rachel216 | September 3, 2009 8:34 PM | Report abuse

Well I would rather have Westbrook than Tryon.

I am watching this on NFL.com with no TV coverage in the UK. Its 0130 am.... Please tell me the skins look better on tv than they do just looking at the play by play ???

Posted by: ianb87 | September 3, 2009 8:37 PM | Report abuse

Mike Williams sucks!!!!!!!!!'

Posted by: jiza32 | September 3, 2009 8:37 PM | Report abuse

Some friendly advice for Chase... STOP RUNNING! YOU'RE TOO SLOW!

Posted by: JohnnyRyde | September 3, 2009 8:37 PM | Report abuse

problem who is the backup tackle if not williams??? but it does appear he can't play

Posted by: cedric_lockhart | September 3, 2009 8:38 PM | Report abuse

Two Things:

Chase Is Gone... Sorry
&
Is Marko Trying To Play Himself Out of a job?

Posted by: cocodc1 | September 3, 2009 8:38 PM | Report abuse

Chase is so short he can barely see over his O line. haha.

Posted by: rachel216 | September 3, 2009 8:38 PM | Report abuse

Why the f are they playing?

Mike Williams, although a great story, isn't a comeback story.

He lost weight, good for him. Shouldn't be on the roster.

jm, who cares if the Jags have their starters in... 'skins have mailed it in. They're ready for the reg season.

Posted by: RedDMV | September 3, 2009 8:38 PM | Report abuse

It's gonna be 47-0! Woohoo!!!

He drives me up a wall. But he did make a great point on DThomas jumping up to catch a pass, even when he doesn't need to jump.

Posted by: frediefritz | September 3, 2009 8:42 PM | Report abuse

This is just sad...

Posted by: cocodc1 | September 3, 2009 8:43 PM | Report abuse

If you think Colt Brennan is a good NFL quarterback, you might not understand the game of football very well.

Posted by: SonnyFan | September 3, 2009 8:43 PM | Report abuse

Make that 21 zippy there Mr. Mayor.

Posted by: periculum | September 3, 2009 8:43 PM | Report abuse

It's gonna be an easy job for the coaches. What a horrible showing by the "bubble" guys.

Posted by: rachel216 | September 3, 2009 8:43 PM | Report abuse

When Theisman is talking football, he's pretty good. He's made several good points/arguments tonight...

Posted by: JohnnyRyde | September 3, 2009 8:44 PM | Report abuse

this is set up perfectly for colt, if he even looks competent he will be the storyline.

Posted by: chrislarry | September 3, 2009 8:44 PM | Report abuse

Red who play their starts well into the 2nd quarter of the last pre season game?

No, that fumble doesn't hurt him. He was cocking his arm when he was hit.

Posted by: frediefritz | September 3, 2009 8:45 PM | Report abuse

Ahmmm, without some very judicious trades by Vinto the Pinto its not going to be pretty.

Posted by: periculum | September 3, 2009 8:46 PM | Report abuse

SonnyFan- and how would you know, expert? he hasn't even played in an NFL game!!

A beatdown like this before the first game can't be good for the players' confidence..

Posted by: rachel216 | September 3, 2009 8:46 PM | Report abuse

Ugly ugly stuff.

I can understand the first-team guys loafing tonight and just wanting to leave the joint w/ no injuries.

It doesn't look like any of the other guys are real interested in making the team.

Anyone trying to make a case for Mike Williams making this team is a freakin joke. He's getting ABUSED on every play. Does he deserve a roster spot for losing 100 pounds? HE CANNOT PLAY FOOTBALL.

Posted by: p1funk | September 3, 2009 8:47 PM | Report abuse

Westbrook is gone. =( They look terrible tonight. :(

It sounds a lot worse than it is. Their first team is still in there against mstly guys that will be cut.

Posted by: frediefritz | September 3, 2009 8:48 PM | Report abuse

This beatdown is immaterial. Different players out there.

I'm a Skins fan and he drives me up a wall as a commentator.

Homer?? More like brown-nosing the Skins so that Snyder will throw him a bone and hire him as a boradcaster.

Theisman wants to be the next Larry Michaels: mouthpiece of the Danny.

bot darrel young and robert hensen had special team tackles.

O.K., the online feed from ESPN 980 is gone. No Sam or Sonny. Is this a providential act of mercy or just piling on?

Posted by: boothintexas | September 3, 2009 8:53 PM | Report abuse

I'm about to change my screen name to MIKE WILLIAMS SUCKS....AND HE DOES!!!!!!

Posted by: jiza32 | September 3, 2009 8:54 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: isnadd | September 3, 2009 8:56 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: farstriker | September 3, 2009

How do I say this ... uhhh well, WRONG!!! This is the last game, the final audition before the regular season. At the very least the defense (after all the so-called "upgrades") should be doing better than this? The so-called "beast" they needed Brian Orapko is in there. Fletcher who is pushing 34-35 isn't, No Carlos Rogers who last year was 3rd string for awhile. And no AH, but you have to get used to that because HE NEVER plays 16 games.

You have to better than this in your last preseason game Dr. Zorn.

Posted by: periculum | September 3, 2009 8:56 PM | Report abuse

I think the moral is, don't play all of the backups together at the same time during the regular season.

Posted by: freakzilla | September 3, 2009 8:56 PM | Report abuse

Pathetic is a word that comes to mind. And this is Jacksonville! Who in their right mind thinks this team will be 10-6? 8-8 or 7-9 could even be a stretch. And let's end the Mike Williams experiment tonight - please.

Posted by: LeeM9308 | September 3, 2009 8:56 PM | Report abuse
