Redskins are keeping Lorenzo Alexander busy

It seems Lorenzo Alexander will be as busy as ever despite his recent position change and improved standing on the team.

Formerly a versatile defensive lineman, Alexander was converted to an outside linebacker during the offseason. Impressed with Alexander's athleticism on film, defensive coordinator Jim Haslett envisioned him as a good fit as a stand-up player in Washington's new 3-4 scheme.

And Alexander performed so well in the offseason program, organized team activities and minicamps that he begins the preseason in competition with Andre Carter for a starting spot. But special teams coordinator Danny Smith still plans to lean heavily on Alexander, who played key roles on the defensive line, offensive line and special teams during the Redskins' run to a wild-card playoff berth during the 2007 season.

In addition to his linebacker duties, Alexander also is listed on specialty depth charts as a defensive end in the nickel defense and a defensive tackle in the "fast" nickel, an alignment that includes three linebackers and one defensive lineman. Technically, Alexander would be the other tackle.

"That's just what I do, especially with Andre being the starter right now, I'm going to be playing a lot of different positions anyway," Alexander said. "And [Haslett] likes that just 'cause he doesn't like teams keying in on [linebacker Brian Orakpo] or Andre doing one specific thing.

"So maybe in the course of a game, 'Hey, Zo, you do this,' so they just can't set protections to us. So that's really what the 'fast' nickel is, to just create a little more confusion out there. It just helps us mix it up and keep teams guessing."

Carter is listed as the starter for Friday night's preseason opener against the Buffalo bills at FedEx Field.

"They kind of gave him the nod, I guess initially, as far as being the starter right now," Alexander said. "My role is going to be what it has been the whole time: just kind of doing a whole bunch of different things, plus also on special teams, and contributing that way."

Alexander, however, still plans to push for the starting assignment. "I'm going to go out there to compete," he said. "I'm going to put the pressure on him because that just makes him better. ... Every day I'm going to go out there and lay it on the line like I'm trying to be the starter. But if that's not what they want, I'm not going to have any problems with that. I'm going to go out and do what they need me to do."

Re: Thinker v. Steinberg

Got turned around quicker than Alex Barron in a preseason game. Dude, how sissy was that?

Re: 'Girls

I said it weeks ago. For all the broo-ha over their skill positions, the 'Pukes have taken a step back on their Oline, which means disaster for pig-eyed Romo. And since they have no coaching to adjust, it's going to be a very up-n-down season for the Brokebacks.

Re: Jason Shambles

I said that when he finally got traded, I would not continue to track his mediocrity from afar - and I won't. We saw 50+ starts from the guy. We know who he is. We know what he's made of. A move to the Raiders will not transform him into Doug Williams. All I want is a mea culpa from the now defunct JC Defense Union...

As we go into the preseason we seem to overlook the overwhelming part of the football game. We have articles on schemes, zone blocking, blitz packages, receiver routs, deception in the defensive packages...

It is all secondary to:

WHO WILL WIN THE INDIVIDUAL BATTLES???.... WHO HITS HARDER??? Can your line outplay the other team?

If you are knocking the other guys on their tail everything works ... if you don't all the great ideas and schemes are so much blather.

Can they win the battle of the lines the war in the trenches. Are they tough enough to exert their will on the other guys. The Hogs were great because they were tough and knocked the other guys on their backsides.

We will see tonight.

But he's right. It wasn't just 1 preseason quarter. It was 50+ regular season starts AND 1 preseason quarter that entitle him to a big chorus of "MY BAD."

What's to hate? He couldn't win in Washington and he clearly wasn't a WCO QB. He's out in Raiders' land where they could use him and be effective but instead they are trying to do with him what Joe Gibbs tried: make him a play action QB. The only problem with that is he can't hit on the deep ball, which is a fact that the Raiders - just like Saint Joe - just can't seem to believe. From NFL.com: "He indoctrinated himself as a Raiders QB by throwing deep twice, once down each sideline; the first was broken up by a rookie free agent, the other was caught out of bounds." Any of this sounding familiar???

RSH, I'm not rehashing the JC debate for the 8 billionth time...just suffice it to say that he's an average QB that was light years from being the biggest problem on this team the last 5 years. He's a nice guy and I wish him the best...hating him after he's already gone is personal, not business...

Posted by: brownwood26 | August 13, 2010 9:16 AM | Report abuse

By definition, isn't hating when you rip a person who has success; generally showing alot of jealousy or envy?

So when people "Hate" on JC, it's not really hating.

I think hating would be me saying,"Drew Brees sucks, Tom Brady sucks..."

People don't hate on JC, because it's impossible. I'm just glad he's not here to throw a 3 yard pass on 3rd and 9.

Redskins Insider Live, huh? Can't wait for the AH updates...

10:30am - According to a source inside Redskins Park, AH has just entered the bathroom to take his post coffee deuce
10:42am - AH, who skipped all but one voluntary workout this offseason, just made a phone call presumably to request a trade. Nope...upon further confirmation, he phoned a team official requesting more toilet paper for Round 2.
10:50 - AH (who signed a 100 million contract in 2009) just sharted in a team meeting. Our analysis indicates he gambled with a fart and lost.

Dear Diary

Had a call early this morning from Mommy -- both to wish me luck for this evening and to try to get some “inside stuff” to help her make an “informed investment” with her bookie.

I had to tell her, “You know Mommy, it’s against the rules to bet on your own games – so let’s just forget that you ever asked me that question. What’s more, NFL pre-season games are about as unpredictable as Uncle Carlos when he’s had a few too many – and damn near as volatile.”

So she says, “Yeah, yeah – so what ? So tell me boy, who do I bet on and how?”

So I says, “Well, you didn’t get it here, but he’s how I see it.”

1. It’s a near “dead cert” that the Bills will score the first points, probably on a long pass in the first series. CR22 will bite on a double-move, and LL30 will blow by and miss the tackle.

2. In his first offensive series, McNabb will probably complete a short pass or two to the tight ends and running backs – but then under-throw the ball to the wide receiver and fail to convert a third down. Then the long snapper will snap the ball short and bounce it back to the punter.

3. Rex Grossman will get a substantial amount of playing time but put up pretty mediocre numbers – while leading the offensive unit to a touchdown and a couple of field goals – all in the second half.

4. Clinton Portis will explain the reason that he failed to gain much yardage is that he is “saving himself” for the regular season -- and discount Larry Johnson’s workmanlike performance as a series of “fluke runs” against Buffalo’s second and third teamers.

5. Albert Haynesworth will be pretty a non-factor for the short time he is in the game, and only embarrass himself slightly when he vacates his slot to freelance on a misdirection play.

So Mommy then asked, “Well, Son, that’s all well and good and all, but who is going to win?”

“It’s anybody’s guess,” I said, “not that it makes much difference. It's only a pre-season game. I’m just looking forward to the post-game buffet.”

Until next time,

Your BFF!!

Campbell is, at best, a mid-range 20-40 yard, into the center of the field thrower (provided he throws first and thinks second).

But after the J Russell debacle, all Campbell has to do is replicate the 3,400 yard performance from last season to be deemed effective for the raiders.

And besides, most league/media folk will tell you McNabb's performance in D.C. is of more importance than JC's in OAK.

And because of that, I'll hold my breath before talking loud positively/negatively about anybody.

Not sure why folks are still dogging JC; since we're dealing in facts, the 'fact' is he's one h^ll of a lot better than that backup QB trash on the 'Skins roster (Rex Grossman? Really? And some guy named Beck, and another kid no ones ever heard of? Wow, are the 'Skins in trouble if McNabb struggles or, God forbid, misses a game). In any case, JC's no longer here; whether he sinks or swims in Oakland, he does deserve the opportunity to start; especially if Jay Cutler gets to keep his job in Denver. Oakland's OLine stinks, but JC still only got sacked once, (Tony HoeMo went down 3 times -- I can't wait until the season opener! Orakpo and Co. are gonna plant that guy!) But, since the article was about Lorenzo Alexander, I'll need to ask: Am I the only one who wishes the 'Skins could clone this guy!

What do you need CBs for when your front 7 consists of Lorenzo, Lozo, Zo, Lo, Mr. Alexander, and I ran out of names but you get the idea. Same for wide receivers when your o-line is the same. Just run the ball. Oh and you also have Lo lead blocking. And hell every shotgun snap is basically wildcat. And Zo can run over in an end around sweep from WR. It's a guaranteed 5 yard gain every play!

Have to disagree with you there about Alexander.
Only the Redskin Insider is making this guy out to be Jim Thorpe.

Hopefully, the same way some fans believe Shanahan is playing mental motivational games with AH & DT, he's doing the same with the LBs- Rocky McIntosh, Perry Riley, HB Blades, and Robert Henson. They should be embarrassed that a DT/OL is being placed in front of them at LB with no experience whatsoever at their position-they are natural linebackers after all. If this can't motivate them nothing will.
If Lorenzo Alexander were this good an athlete/player, he would have pinned down a starting spot a long time ago, it's not like there's been a bunch of players in his way at DL/OL. Alexander is this generation's Dean Hamel-a versatile hustler w/o enough talent to stick at one position.
Andre Carter was an outside LB coming out of California and he flopped at San Fran at OLB-and that was when he was younger.

I don't dislike L.Alexander, but it would be disastrous if NONE of the natural LBs can play him and Carter to the bench. It would be an indictment of them and the folks who selected them, including Shanahan & Allen-they drafted Perry Riley at OLB.
