Redskins auditioning kickers

Following place kicker Shaun Suisham's missed 23-yard field goal in the closing minutes against the Saints, the Redskins plan to audition kickers on Tuesday. Among those expected to kick for coaches at Redskins Park are Nick Novak and Graham Gano.

Novak is a University of Maryland product who has bounced around the NFL, including two stints with the Redskins in 2005 and '06. Gano is a rookie out of Florida State who was cut by the Baltimore Ravens in training camp and spent the past couple of months with the Las Vegas Locomotives of the United Football League.

Suisham is 18 of 21 on field goal attempts this year, and Zorn said Monday that the auditions don't necessarily "mean that he's cleaning out his locker."

Can we audition some coaches?

It would be hard to believe that any of these guys could be any worse.

Suisham has missed 3 too many this year, has no range, and his KOs are terrible

Auditioning kickers is a good idea, but I would not make the move unless Novak lit it up. Short of that, this should serve more as a message sent to Suisham to get him to snap out of it.

No to the Florida kicker with no NFL experience. Bring him back into camp next year.

I was saying in July we needed a kicker now that punter/HUNTER was in the fold. Get one in FA after the season is over.

FA left tackle also a must. We are not going to get an elite LT in the draft so pick the FS ERIC BERRY our #1. Then look for a RT and back-up G in later rounds.

O-line positions next year:

Best FA left tackle - JONES back-up.

DERRICK DOCKERY LG - BATISTE or rookie #4 or #5 pick.

CASEY RABACH - MONTGOMERY/RED SNAPPER.

MIKE WILLIAMS?? - THOMAS/RINEHART/WILLIAMS

STEPHON HEYER - rookie #2 pick

Sign ROCKY McINTOSH. We need an OLB like MARCUS WASHINGTON was to take over for BRIAN ORAKPO. Put the rookie down with his hand in the dirt exclusively and let him learn the DE position. Add a #7 pick at LB or best available at any position.

CHRIS WILSON is doing a good job at combo LB/DE. LORENZO ALEXANDER is great at TE/DT. We now have ROB JACKSON possibly ready to take RENALDO WYNN's place.

Sign JASON CAMPBELL for two with heavy incentives.

REDSKINS HOLD PRIVATE KICKER AUDITION

Dateline: Washington, D.C.

While a ceremonial kicker "audition" was being held with Nick Novak and other no names to replace Shawn Whatshisname, the Redskins were holding the real kicking audition in Daniel Snyder's office.

According to unnamed, but seemingly important sources close to the situation, Daniel Snyder put on a helmet and a jockstrap and proceeded to kick Jim Zorn 23 times - one for each yard of missed field goal in the New Orleans game.

"Jim was a good sport - took it all in fun as Snyder cussed and used significant profanity while kicking Zorn in the buttocks after forcing him to assume the position." said the undisclosed important source. "Jim recited Bible verses and broke into Church Lady vocals as Snyder moved from 10 to 15 kicks."

There is no word yet if Snyder will now remove Zorn's headset from the sidelines and make him wear second hand redskin outfits.

Cutting Suisham is not the answer. Yes, he's missed two critical kicks this year, but if you prefer your FG kicker miss FG's early in games, then bring in a new, possibly more inaccurate kicker than Suisham.

WTF?? Dude has costed us 2 games against the supposed 'elite' teams in the NFL.

He never kicks a KO in the endzone. And his range stops @ 47/48 yards. And we ain't going anywhere this year.

Easiest spot to cut someone, and let everyone else know they will follow in the offseason if performance is lacking.

Dude missed an extra point, basically. How can you make excuses for that.

Off hand I remember Novack winning 2 games for us. The 1st game of the year against Seattle, and the Vincent block, ST21 return against the cowboys with no time left.

Give me Novack!

If the Skins are going to start looking at kickers, then maybe the time has come to start looking at practice squad players on other teams and see if there are any gems out there that can be 'stolen'.

Now is the time to start looking at next year. That means sitting ARE for the rest of the year, trying out Moore at FS with an extended look, not just here and there. Give Rob Jackson more playing time.

Also time to start kicking the tires on a new GM. Would prefer that Dan looks at turning over the reins to a football person to run the FB ops in the style of Parcells, but most likely it's him and Vinny again next year.

Although the problem with a new GM and HC is that the little bit of continuity built over the last two years would be affected. And with the team finally starting to play like and NFL team, the question is do we shake that up?

What is the right direction to go in? That seems to be the real question.

Cut him after the season. We can lose a few more games, get a better draft position, then draft a place-kicker with our first, a punter with our second, wide receiver with fourth.

great observation, lifelongfan. even w/ the missed fg, if landry hadn't chomped on the double move twice, neither colston nor meachem would've scored on those long td passes from brees. the score would've been around 30-16 redskins win! then when you hear what landry said you get more pissed because he's like "there was nothing i could do...it was a great pass and a great catch". this mutha fuqqa spent half the game posing for a mr. olympia contest after each tackle. even when he caused the sack on brees, did you see how weak the hit was? he threw himself at brees like he did against avant in the philly game. we're just fuqqin lucky brees lost his balance because he would've lit us up on that particular play. i do blame suisham for missing the fg. it was basically an extra pt he missed but i blame landry more for having no discipline as a free safety. i can almost imagine sean taylor kicking the lid to his coffin to get free and choke the shyt outta landry for such stupidity!!!

Zorn said yesterday it was a bad kick.

Of the guys they brought in, I'd rather see Nugent get the gig. Novak was the guy we cut to bring in Suisham, remember?

And 4th, count me as one of the "wr-te-wr people" you're referring to...just because those guys are starting to show they've got some game doesn't mean those picks were right. This team would be no worse off with Yoder playing TE in Cooley's absence, and would probably be better off if the Davis pick is used on some line help. As long as the O-line suffers, those picks were wasted. Period.

screw the kicker i say we make a strong case that if snyder wants to get rid of the little bit of cohesiveness the team has gained these last few weeks by firing the z-man then the least he can do is let buges take the reigns. keep all the terminology the same and not have to start from scratch just to finish middle of the pack for the next two years

You can't possibly be serious.

Besides the fact Buges in entering his 70s and should be thinking of retiring as a position coach, no chance he'd be up for a promotion much less accept one. So tank that idea right now.

Even if he did, no chance he'd run a WCO. That's what makes this whole situation a clusterf*ck: having a coaching staff that's half smashmouth/half WCO. If the coaches are conflicted, how could you expect the players to do anything right out there?

I say it is time to look at a young guy. If this Gano kid can kick the ball into the end zone on kickoffs and make PAT's, then sign him. Rub off his rough edges with the remainder of the season and beginning of the next. It's not like they are going anywhere but home after the season, so take a chance. I would be particularly interested in how the kicker does when the game is on the line. The Redskins need to start finding players that elevate their game when the chips are down. Obviously Suisham isn't that kind of guy.

Posted by: RedSkinHead | December 8, 2009 8:59 AM | Report abuse

By the way, replacing Danny Smith in the offseason is a must. His teams have given up three turnovers and gotten none. Punt return average is horrible and they have lost two games because the kicker couldn't kick easy field goals. Yes, coverage units are pretty good, but that's only half of the special team responsibilities.

Posted by: RedSkinHead | December 8, 2009 9:02 AM | Report abuse

i now beleive that we should keep zorn but take all play calling duties away so we may have the ability to not have play calls to try for field goals instead of trying to win the games. that is a big problem with this team now. he simply and consistenetly calls bad plays and holds back the momentem that the team generates. he seems to be meddling in the play calling way too much just to make us lose because he feels that his job is over at the end of the year. we had this problem with gibbs last time just playing not to lose.

Again with the knee jerk reactions(fire Danny Smith)yesterday on this post it was Jerry Gray's turn, JUST STOP IT! neither Gray nor Smith are responsible for some of the miscues we've seen, had this team not tanked against Det,KC,and Carolina maybe we would still have playoff life(on the respirator!)Gray didn't tell Laron or Stone Hands to fall for the now infamous "double move" no more than Smith told Westbrook to back into Randel-EL and cause a gamechanging fumble against Carolina changing position coach's is a big deal they have more impact than the H/C because they deal with the players one on one,as far as Suisham goes he's missed some huge ones (playoff game in Seattle,Dallas,Saints) and his kickoffs almost always lack distance yeah he's gotta go but not now just wait until the season is over.

Posted by: dargregmag | December 8, 2009 9:36 AM | Report abuse

You get paid as a kicker to make kicks like the one Suisham missed on Sunday. He could be 20 for 21, or 13 for 21, but that's money time. He missed. He should be out. It wasn't a 47-yarder in the wind. It was a chip shot and potential turning point for the Redskins. Now you can guarantee Zorn is out, and Campbell is out, and while that may be necessary, it's also another 3-4 year rebuilding process. A victory Sunday would have been huge. Now, it's just, "Nice try, guys." Sorry Shaun, you melted when the pressure was on. No need for that type of kicker the NFL.

Why audition kickers now? What was Shaun Suisham's kicking like last year? Oh yeah he rated at or near the bottom of the NFL. They knew what they were getting and decided to keep him. Now is not the time to make that change. The offseason and training camp is when you do that.

Why are people picking on Suisham? You win as a team, you lose as a time. What about the safety that bites on double moves? What about the qb that threw an interception when there was an opportunity to win the game? What about a defense that can't stop the other team when the game is on the line. What about the Mike Sellers fumble? What about being stripped of the ball after an interception in the first half? etc. etc. The point is one person didn't lose that game, they all did.

Before everyone jumps on the "cut Suisham" bandwagon, please remember one of the first, and mainly forgotten, Dan Snyder blunders.

Suisham is a very accurate kicker with a strong leg. He reminds me of David Akers.

Remember David Akers, Redskin's fans?

Akers was signed by the Washington Redskins in 1998 and played in one game for them, making two extra points but missing two field goal attempts of 50+ yards each. He was waived during the 1999 season.

Yes, Dan Snyder waived David Akers during the season after a post-game hissy fit.

Since then, the Philadelphia Eagles and their fans remain forever grateful for Dan Snyder's frequent tantrums.

The kicker has lost the last two games... to NFC east teams.... and look at the way the level of play by Skins changed...we sit and watch a sure field goal (23 yards) I as well as the rest of the nation thought it was a done deal. Now imagine you have played the undefeated team to a possible 10 point lead with 2 min left in the game and your kicker misses lets see how far your heart would drop... this is a game of emotions....can you imagine the let down... kudos to the way Skins have played HTTR

The last thing I want to see is this team fall into the scapegoating mentality of the Norv Turner years, where people were most concerned with CYA-"I did my part" kind of attitude. It would be a knee jerk reaction to cut Suisham now (something Dan Snyder and his fantasy football mind would do). Joe Gibbs always emphasized the team--you win as a team and you lose as a team--and it's very telling that in this mess of a football organization that he coaxed two playoff appearances out of the Skins in his second go around.

A new kicker won't do a darn good for the skins! (Especially since one of them had already been booted! No offense Novack.)

Eventhough the outcome of the missed kick was costly, I blame more the coaching staff than the kicker! The skins ran two plays to the left side on 1st and 2nd downs and then, they ran to the right on 3rd down. Can't they think and strategize a little bit??? They have a right-footed kicker and they can't help him out a little bit??? There's absolutely nothing guaranteed in the NFL, even for a chip shot field goal!

What about the time when the Saints were about to attempt a long field goal and Zorn calls a time out? "Everyone else does it, why not?! C'mon?!!! I'm glad the Saints reacted as they did! Thanks for schooling our coach, who doesn't even do the play-calling anymore for lacking the know how... and from the last I heard around here, wasn't he going to be in charge of birthday cake ordering for the players? If any dessert delight gets mentioned on the headset, then- Chocolate Sprinkes is probably a conservative, yard loosing formation ran with the lightest, 5th running back on the roster in critical down situations.

Sherman Lewis did a great job with the passing play-calling!

The bum has hit 18 of 21 field goals. How Norv Turner-esque can you be? Years of Turner's crying "If only I had a kicker". You truly believe the Saints couldn't had scored 10 points in the final two minutes as they did 7? Are you cutting LeRon Landry for getting burned for two td's? NO! Are you cutting Sellers for fumbling in OT? NO! Are you cutting Moore for having the ball stripped and returned for a TD before the half? NO! I thought our defense would welcome the offense scoring 30 points, but that wasn't enough was it? Let's cut the kicker.
