Redskins lose 17-16 to Bucs on botched extra point snap

By Paul Tenorio

Updated: 4:06 p.m.
Fourth Quarter

After driving 75 yards to set up a tying extra point on a six-yard touchdown pass to Santana Moss with just seconds left in the game, the Redskins botched the snap on the point after kick and found a new way to lose, falling to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 17-16.

The play was another huge missed opportunity in a game full of them for Washington.

Despite a career performance by running back Ryan Torain, the Redskins failed to capitalize on several drives and allowed 14 consecutive points to Tampa Bay in the loss.

A 41-yard touchdown pass from Tampa quarterback Josh Freeman to tight end Kellen Winslow with 3 minutes 47 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter was the finishing touch on a comeback by Tampa Bay, which nearly shut down the Redskins' offense in the second half.

After gaining 272 yards of offense in the first half, Washington finished with just 399 and failed to put together a drive of more than six plays until the final possession of the game.

The Redskins caught a break early in the fourth quarter when it appeared as though Tampa Bay was prepared to take the lead.

A 43-yard pass from Freeman to Arrelious Benn gave the Buccaneers first and goal from the one-yard line, but on the next play Freeman fumbled the snap and Redskins linebacker London Fletcher recovered in the end zone for a touchback.

The turnover would prove crucial because a Washington offense that was moving the ball well behind Torain in the first half could not generate much in the second half.

But the ability to maintain the lead without generating much offensively did not last the entire game, and after a punt with just more than seven minutes remaining in the game, Tampa Bay took over and drove the field before Freeman connected with Winslow down the middle of the field over linebacker Rocky McIntosh for the deciding score.

Third Quarter

Washington saw its lead begin to dwindle in the third quarter, as Tampa Bay took advantage of an early mistake and a Redskins three-and-out to pull within 10-9 going into the final quarter.

The Redskins ran just six offensive plays, not counting Hunter Smith's two punts, and gained a total of 15 yards with no first downs. After running the ball very well in the first half, the Redskins ran it just twice for one yard in the third quarter.

The Buccaneers pooched the opening kickoff and Chris Wilson was unable to handle the ball, giving Tampa Bay possession at the Redskins 34-yard line.

The Redskins defense limited the damage, preventing the Buccaneers from getting any closer than the 26 yard line, but Connor Barth hit a 44-yard field goal to make it 10-6.

Washington punted after failing to pick up a first down, and Tampa promptly drove down the field. A reverse to Benn went for 17 yards on first down and two 11-yard passes gave the Bucs first down at the Redskins 23-yard line. Tampa could not pick up another first down, however, and Barth's 35-yard field goal pulled the Buccaneers to within one point.

Second quarter

Despite dominating the game in nearly every statistical category, the Redskins went into the half with just a 10-3 lead over the Buccaneers after several missed opportunities to cash in on solid drives.

Ryan Torain continued to run effectively with 158 yards at the half. But the Redskins offense initially maintained its inability to turn the long drives and consistent runs into points.

The Redskins had 14 first downs to Tampa Bay's four, and 272 yards to Tampa's 144. Washington also had the ball for 19:39 compared to Tampa's 10:11.

Washington ran the ball on the first five plays of the second quarter to move to Tampa Bay's eight-yard line, but the drive stalled there after a loss of four on a run, an incomplete shovel pass and six-yard run on third and goal from the 12.

Somehow, kicker Graham Gano curled his 24-yard field goal from the right hash wide of the left upright, leaving the Redskins again with nothing to show for their efforts.

On the next possession, however, cornerback DeAngelo Hall caught LeGarrette Blount from behind on a 14-yard run and stripped him of the ball, recovering it at Washington's 46-yard line.

The turnover finally sparked Washington's offense to its first points.

Two consecutive passes to Santana Moss were the keys on the drive - a 22-yard reception on third and 5 and a 21-yard catch on the next play - gave Washington first and goal on the six-yard line. Despite failing to get into the end zone on the first three plays, Washington opted to go for it on fourth and goal from the one-yard line, and a play-action pass to Logan Paulsen gave Washington the 7-0 lead with 4:51 to play in the first half.

Tampa Bay came right back on its first offensive snap, a 65-yard pass from Josh Freeman to Arrelious Benn, who beat DeAngelo Hall down the sideline. Washington's defense held on the next three plays, forcing the Bucs to settle for a 25-yard field goal from Connor Barth to pull within 7-3.

The Redskins again cashed in with their running backs. Torain broke off a 19-yard run and Keiland Williams took a screen pass 36 yards to the five-yard line. Washington failed to get into the end zone, however, and settled for a 25-yard field goal by Graham Gano to take a 10-3 lead with just 10 seconds remaining in the half.

First Quarter

Running back Ryan Torain had not played since Oct. 31, missing the Redskins last four games due to injury, but the first-year back looked outstanding in the first quarter against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Torain rushed for 121 yards on 10 carries in the first quarter - four short of his career high - and was the bright spot for Washington in the scoreless frame. The Redskins were unable to capitalize on Torain's big runs on their first two possessions.

After Torain broke off a 54-yard run to push Washington into Tampa Bay territory, the Redskins drive stalled on a short third-down pass by quarterback Donovan McNabb to Chris Cooley. Graham Gano clanked his 34-yard field goal attempt off the left upright.

After the Redskins stopped Tampa Bay on third and 1 for the second consecutive drive to force a punt - both on pass break-ups - the Redskins took over and Torain rushed for 12, 23 and 10 yards on his first three carries. But McNabb threw incomplete on second down at the Buccaneers 43-yard line and was sacked for a loss of 12 on third down to force a Redskins punt.

Washington's defense forced another three and out on Tampa Bay's third possession and Torain carried three times for 19 yards. Donovan McNabb hit Santana Moss for eight yards to Tampa's 32-yard line on third and 3 on the final play of the quarter.

As long as we get TDs and the Bucs kick FGs, I'm fine with that.

With the exception of the missed FGs, the Bucs look like we have at times this year, and we look like the team in the playoff hunt. Amazing what a solid ground game can do for you.

I'm liking it. The future does have some bright spots.

That was on dad and son both having two different approaches to attacking the end zone. That was pathetic coaching.

Left way too many points out there this half. Especially with the Bucs being a 4th qtr team.

What a 2 minute disaster. Have they ever practiced that? Sure didn't look like it. Makes one wonder if those reports about McNabb having trouble with the 2 minute drill are true...

Also didn't look like the Shanahans had a clue. Christ, a high school team can do it, but we can't? This is supposed to be the NFL, guys.

okay, okay, bad red-zone offense, but that running game had shades of Shanahan in Denver gashing defenses with the zone blocking schemes and one-cut running.

glen, you think our 41 sucks? Have you seen their 41 missing tackles 15 yards downfield and go sliding by in the mud? He's directly responsible for about 50 of Ryan Torain's rushing yards this half.

BTW, why does McNabb even throw that 3rd down pass to the 2 yard line with no prayer of getting into the end zone? Even if he somehow catches it, the clock runs out. Hope to God it was a throwaway.

Terrible all around. 2nd and goal from the 2 with a min left and a TO and we're left with 3rd and goal from the 7 with NO TOs and 20 secs.

That's on Dad, son, and McNabb.

Funny to see McNabb try and call a TO after a TO and a delay of game when we're out of TOs. Lucky we were out of TOs or it would have been a penalty. Then when we all but told the BUCs we were passing, McNabb throws it short of the endzone.

Agreed Diesel ...but more on dad and son..

Watching the confusion on the sideline when the skins were threatening at the last 2 minutes of the half.. It appears the father/son combo is causing more problems than solutions.. Kyle seems tentative and lost as does Mike.. And no one seems to want to take charge of the Offensive calls. This dysfunction surely has to affect the players as they see this hesitation and lack of leadership.
Case in point, players were told by Mike
Shanahan that he made the decision to pull McNabb in Detroit. But, the players are expected to look up to and respect Kyle as the coach of the Offense.
Mike should hand over the entire Offense to his son (play calling and personnel) and show the players that he has confidence in Kyle's decisions.

Highest paid coaches in the NFL (or close to it) and its a friggn organizational mess...

Posted by: kerzon417 | December 12, 2010 3:11 PM | Report abuse

Seems like the one downside of the run game being so successful in the first half is that the passing game never got established and thus is not in synch. It would have been hard to call anything else but runs when Torain is getting 10yds per touch, but once the Bucs made an adjustment (apparently) Skins had to throw more -- it looks clunky, perhaps because there wasn't much attention paid to it in the first half. Kind of a weird, backwards sort of development compared to when teams come out throwing every down to begin a game.

It's not DM5; it's our OC co-ordinating
his play calling with Dad. The Offensive
doesn't know who's in charge. We need either a new HC or a new OC. The chain of
command needs fixing, hopefully in the off season. This mgmt team isn't working. DM5 needs one boss and not be double-teamed.

The Offense and DMac havent played the same for Kyle, since Dad came in and yanked the starting QB and team leader at the 2 minute warning in Detroit.. what are they since then, 1-4 W-L?
At that moment, the players realized that Kyle is not to be feared is really just a part-time play caller and not in charge of the Offense.

Posted by: onanygivensunday | December 12, 2010 3:28 PM | Report abuse

Pretty sure the reason the O sucks isn't because the players aren't "afraid" of Kyley-S.

if we can trade mcnabb and fat al to trade up for Luck I'll be down! Add some good oline men in FA and a good wr, pick up or trade for a good olb and mlb, pick up a starting nt and 2 de's, sign champ bailey to play nickel, franchise rocky and trade him, draft Luck, aWR in the 2nd, and oline the rest of the way and I could see us being better than the bucs are now! HTTR!!

Posted by: warriorking111285 | December 12, 2010 3:31 PM | Report abuse

Early in his career you had to be careful about blitzing McNabb because he would beat you with his feet. Now people know that he can't really run anymore and he is not the best at read-react....the blitz is a very effective tool. Makes the O-Line look worse than they really are!

But look, this team loses a close game with a team that is, at least by its record, a better team. They didn't get blown out by them. They get blown out by teams that are significantly better than they are and they're close with other teams. They're just not better than teams like Tampa Bay at the moment.

You can at least take away from this game that they have a few playmakers that will step up and get them close, especially when they've been shut down in the second half.

Posted by: dannykurland1 | December 12, 2010 4:04 PM | Report abuse

Gano will be placed on IR (or waived injured) on Tuesday. Kicker tryouts on Monday.

Smith has punted lousy all year, but nobody has talked about that. Snap was high - Gano would have pulled it left like all his other kicks today. Seemed to be aiming for the left upright all day.

This cannot be scripted. No one would believe it - except a Redskin fan. They absolutely find a way to rip your heart out.

Another top 5 draft pick beckons.

Appalling from Special Teams (ironically, the one area of the team where Snyder's money could make a difference, JUST GET THE BEST SNAPPER, KICKER AND PUNTER - JEEZ...).

Poor, poor coaching. Bye bye, Shanny Jr, Danny Smith, Haslett, Gano and Sundeberg.

Disgusting...

Special teams lost us the vikings game and this game, and has yet to "win" a game.

Danny Smith 0-2

Posted by: alex35332 | December 12, 2010 4:07 PM | Report abuse

When will Little Danny learn? Skins are not "just a piece away." He has average personnel evaluation talent within his organization. Period. That trade for McNabb not looking so great right now, huh?

Fans need to learn to stop thinking every year that this is a team about to break out, or counting likely "wins." Guess what, other teams - every single one of them - are counting the Skins as likely wins, or at worst a tossup. Skins are average, or worse, until they play an entire season - not 6 games, not 10, not 14 - proving otherwise. You are what your record says you are.

Posted by: sparman | December 12, 2010 4:07 PM | Report abuse

A few quick points.

1) They gave up on the run too quickly in the second half.

2)Anthony Bryant is a better NT than Kemo.

3)McNabb, bless him, seems like he won"t be long in DC. Love the leadership, but he made several throws that should've been intercepted. He was inaccurate which caused some big plays to falter. He's the best they got, but IMO qb is a viable option early in the draft.

Before everyone starts freaking out about Ganno (who certainly deserves some blame) and Hunter Smith (because it was not that bad a snap - it was a wet, slick ball...) let's remember that D Hall dropped an EASY pick-six and the absolutely unexplainable ending to the first half.

I have NEVER seen such incompetent time management.

These guys seem to find ways to lose.

Too bad for Torrain having that great effort wasted.

I figured at halftime we would lose. That's what happens to teams that DOMINATE early and don't get points. Skins should have easily scored 20 points in the first half.

I've loved the Skins all my life like most of you on here. But I've can't remember the last time that this team was this bad from top to bottom. Critically acclaimed Shanahan lets the legacy of Zorn and his 'poor' clock management cost us in the 1st half. More bad ST play, an O-line that was rolling with the run, get bewildered on pass plays in the 2nd and a defense that just looked like they didn't care about the pass (needed Rogers and Landry big time today). Time to start looking at the draft.

Posted by: ChuckMann | December 12, 2010 4:19 PM | Report abuse

Do you have a legit running game when you can't run the ball in the 2nd half - ever? Even after running for 1000 yards in the 1st half?

Posted by: coparker5 | December 12, 2010 4:19 PM | Report abuse

On the last drive, Moose Johnston and Siragusa were saying that Shanahan had taken control of the timeouts. And based on what I could see on TV and the body language of the players and Shanny, it seemed that way to me too.

Not saying it mattered in the end because of the missed extra point, but why isn't McNabb the man in control of timeouts in that situation?

Weird.

With a top 8 pick that they might not be able to trade, they have to take an impact player. That might mean QB, wouldn't be the way I would go though..

If they did not get an extra down because the previous play was a first-down, then it was a nine-yard first down. The Redskins were at the 12, and it was a pass to the 3 -- NINE YARDS. No first down.

Good thing they did blow the kick because the refs could have really screwed things up here.

Young qb young receivers young team, a dominate team that let all they vets go and bite the bullet and rebuild a team that looks like they will compete for years. While we just keep adding older players every year like we are one piece away from competing. Please for the love of god just rebuild through the draft get rid of these older players. Hey Insiders-I'm usually over at Nat's Insider.....love the Skins (grew up going to Skins games with Pops' and his season tix)....but with the Nats at least the misery of horrific incompetence in every phase of the game is only 5 years old. So today...watching on TV with Pops, I asked him "when was the last time it was fun to watch this team?" And though there's a books' worth of negative points to be made, I gotta say that our offensive coordinator has no clue. He may be really smart, he may have a brilliant future, but right now he's the last thing this team needs,
And whatever positive impact our head coach has had regarding "accountability" and professionalism.....this is NOT a well coached team. Just pathetic.
Oh-and spare me the sobriquet about Dan Snyder at least being willing to spend his money (in however poor a fashion) to try and bring us a winner.
Ask anyone who has to spend a fortune on parking....food...ANY thing Redskins related.
IT'S OUR MONEY HE'S SPENDING!!!!!
And us loyal, passionate Skins lovers.....we've never been LESS a part of this team. Merely grist for Snyders' money mill. Treated completely dishonorably-our abiding affection for OUR team exploited by a canny marketer. The worst kind of betrayal.
O.K....enough of my disjointed rant.
Cause you know what? I'm not really even all that worked up. Too many years of too many really lousy events...on and off the field. Hate to admit it, but I just really don't care all that much anymore. And that's not just sad, it's a shame.
Sigh....still love me some Skins.....but I-just-don't care-much-anymore. Someone wake me when there's a real reason for optimism

I think we have seen the end of the 52 era. He was ok for most of his career, but he is regressing. Today he had the coverage on the td and a big off sides penalty that gave TB more yds for a fg.

Finally, Im not a fan of 23, but he didnt deserve what Fox did to him today. That was the most slanted view of a player I can remember off in a game. Im still confused by the playcalling. They were driving it up and down the field running the strtch play, then in the 2nd half they tried to run between the tackles.

They killed him for everything. again not a fan of 23, but really Fox...I wish I could take shots at Moose(who coujldnt figure out what team Phillip Buchannon is on) or that big fat lard siragusa who is an absolute joke.

Should have never been close. I don't remember us wasting first half control like this in a long time. (1) McNabb misses a wide open Cooley to get a first down and keep moving. Then, missed FG #1.(2) Stupid play calling - why a shovel pass on 2nd down than a run on 3rd? Missed FG # 2. (3) Keystone Cops at end of half - no ideas what plays to set up during the timeout at around 1:00, so no communication to team. Then a DELAY OF GAME after last timeout, with only :20, making it clear we had to pass. (4) Somewhere in there, D Hall drops and almost sure INT return for a TD. Bottom line - we should have had at least 13 more points, possibly more since TB had basically done nothing to stop us.

Play for the draft!

There is a video over at NFL now. It looks like AA only got nine yards, but he got a favorable spot that was awarded as a first down..... I think.

On another note, hope the Bears break Brady into many little pieces.

The Pats lead 20-0 in the 2nd. Why do you hate a winner?

TB won after their 260 lb QB blasted through a LB and D-lineman to score the winning points on a 2 pt conversion. How much do Cam weigh? I'm going to call him John Elway Jr.

Arg, in these close games there's plenty to blame to go around. I watched the game with another fan and below are some items he was irked about with the coaching staff.

- Special teams, isn't it the coaches that are to blame on fumbling the ball while trying to pick it up, just fall on it, they must not emphasize that enough to the stiffs.
- Special teams, must not coach em up, holding on another long return. We've seen a few of them this season negating huge returns. With Banks back there you can't get those calls.
- poor clock management at end of half by coaches.
- Why did they try to outslick themselves and not slam torain in there in the 3rd quarter. He was having a field day, heck I was thinking maybe breaking a record today.

Corky, I was referring to his inability to think, not talk. And geez, do we need to start pointing out when we're not being entirely sincere? Here, just for you. :/

I'm all for laughing at ineptness, stupidity and incompetence. But unless I missed it as badly as the officials missed holding calls and 5th down plays, Manley didn't have anything to do with the 'skins losing today. In fact, he played at a time when the Redskins WON a lot more. So a snide shot at Manley earns a snide shot at the shooter.

They changed the official play-by-play to cover for the lie that it was a first down at the two. The ball was down and spotted at the THREE. That's what the live TV showed, that's what replays show. From the 12 to the 3.

Either they gave the Redskins a nine-yard first down, or they gave them a fifth down.

If that had cost the Bucs the game and affected the playoffs, yeah, you're damn right the Bucs would have been screaming about it.

But we should still all be screaming that the NFL is covering for the refs.

You here alot about how teams look at the schedule being 4 quarters. 1st 4 games, 2nd 4... etc...
I like to look at team wins as 4 quarters as well.

1 quarter - your team blows out the other team or the victory is never in question
2 quarter - your team has a close victory
3 quarter - your team sufferes a close loss
4 quarter - your team loses a game that was never in doubt.

Winning teams spend the majority of their seasons in quarters 1-3. Skins spend there seasons in quarters 2-4 which has in recent times given the impression that they are close to turning the corner which perpetuates the false hope. Hopefully they can get on the right track this offseason.

When will Little Danny learn? Skins are not "just a piece away." He has average personnel evaluation talent within his organization. Period. That trade for McNabb not looking so great right now, huh?

Yep, I'm so sick of this one piece away crap.

Skins are 3 good drafts away from being consistently competitive. At least one draft's worth of offense (OL and skill); at least one draft's worth of defense (3-4 DL and LB); at least one draft's worth of players to replace old guys on the roster who will be gone by the time we're any good (e.g. Fletcher, McNabb, S. Moss.)

We might be able to fill some holes in FA, but the past practice of trading picks for FA's must end. However, that's predicated on Shanallen showing they know how to draft well...

I admit McNabb has, overall, looked awful this year. But I put the blame of this loss on special teams. Penalties on good returns... again, that final PAT attempt, and Gano looks like a first year kicker in high school. What did he miss, two short FG's and a PAT?

Did not see the game and I'm glad I didn't because tv's cost too much these days. As I have said for sometime now the Skins are not ammong the "chosen ones" How else could anyone explain the multitude of ways this team can find to lose games. Doesn't matter who coaches, what players we draft, what FA's we sign. Seems we play well for three quarters, 12 or 13 minutes into the fourth quarter and then the wheels come off for one reason or another. Haven't given away or burned all of my Skins' stuff yet. You can call me a fair weather fan or whatever you want but these last 12 years have been the same as wandering in the wilderness without a guide. Guess what?, with all of that said, I'm still gonna give them several more years to get this ship righted. I'm a HOMER and you know this!!!!! heh-heh. peace out homies

For example the giants have a 3 year lead on us as far as draft goes. They have stocked their DL, WR corps, OL has been good. The QB position is probably taken care of for years(even tho eli ain't no peyton) and RB's addressed. And I can't stand them.

Just thru attrition we are going to need replacements due to age. There just aint enough draftees to go around for the skins. I suppose they'll be hitting the FA queue. I just pray we don't have anymore AH's, Bruce Smith's, Deion, Jeff George etc...

Skins Suck!
1) Fire Kyle Shanahan-offense sucks, and its NOT McNabbs fault. Nepotism is not working!!
2) Fire Danny Smith-special teams suck, try get a good kicker, check around the league and see all the x-skins kickers!
Oh yeah, since Joe Gibbs left the 1st time we are still better than Lions and Bengals!! Hail To The Redskins! Does Dan Snyder really want a winner?

Posted by: josephbro | December 12, 2010 6:44 PM | Report abuse

somebody here says keep GANO? He was SHORT from 47 with no wind, he's a joke, and Shanahan Family has scammed Dan Snyder and Bruce Allen, I expected more from George Allen's son.

Posted by: josephbro | December 12, 2010 6:57 PM | Report abuse

Think it's time to consider that Shanahan may simply have passed his time as a hc, and his son is simply not qualified for oc. His handling of the game, of players (readL AH and DM, and press management, leave one to think that ahcnage might be necessary. Bruce Allen needs to be authorized to be the true gm, and maybe mkg a change to Chucky might made sense. Bring back Gibbs makes sense at this point!Or....Russ Grimm (who maybe should have been hired in the first place).

Haslett has been terrible, period.

I'm form Philadelphia and believe me when I tell you that McNabb is on the downside. Weight issues, tendency to not own up to mistakes, and the father of the derek Anderson sideline chuckle are all evidence. Why they extended them as they did makes absolutely no sense.

It's really rather surprising that the coaching looks so weak. And mjaybe it's time that the fan base start expressing that in a outright way so that ownership (the ones other than Dan-o) listen up and pressure the Danny. Hero worship only goes so far.
