Redskins by Position: Linebackers

When Gregg Williams created the foundation of this defense in 2004, he did so with linebacker as the key position. The belief was that they should be the heart and soul of the group, making big plays, pressuring the quarterback, affecting the game in coverage. But that simply was not the case in 2008. Linebackers combined for 2½ sacks, one interception and very few big plays. It is most definitely an area of need.

Middle linebacker London Fletcher again played at a Pro Bowl-type level much of the season, but he got little help on the perimeter. And with the defensive line providing no impact, the linebackers suffered. Fletcher is as smart as they come and a tackling machine who can sniff out plays before they happen and jump on running backs and screen passes with the best of them.

He has been injury-free virtually his entire career, but had health problems this season. He missed extended periods of practice in December, and, at 33, the concern is that these kinds of injuries are only going to intensify. He was the MVP of this defense and the team, as currently constituted, cannot afford to lose him for any stretch of time.

H.B. Blades was drafted late a few years back as an understudy to him, but with Marcus Washington broken down on the strong side and out much of the year, Blades was forced into that role. His lack of size makes covering just about any tight end a match-up problem and it's hard to envision him being a regular on the outside. He may be, in the end, what he was projected to be - a good reserve and a very good special teams player. Not sure you get through 16 weeks with him starting.

It appears to be the end for Washington in Washington. The last three years have been marred by injury and he could be released for some cap savings. If he wants to re-sign for the veteran minimum, so be it, but it seems time to move on and get younger there. He simply could not get to the quarterback when deployed as a blitzer and is battered and bruised. The surgeries have mounted and, on Monday, Washington sounded like a man who does not expect to be back.

On the weak side, there are serious concerns about Rock McIntosh. He broke down in the second half, and he has had chronic knee trouble every year since he was drafted. He was coming back from reconstructive surgery and had a good burst around midseason, then tailed off and was being rested extensively late in the season. He struggled in coverage and was victimized a few times in the screen game. His tackling was not always sure. Again, counting on him long-term could be a gamble.

As for upgrades, the Skins flirted with outside linebackers like Lance Briggs on the trade and free agent market, but apart from signing Fletcher to a smart contract in 2007, they haven't done much at this position. Last year the coaches were surprised that the Redskins didn't use at least one of their 10 draft picks on a linebacker - especially when they drafted a punter and third quarterback. I can't imagine that would happen again this year, even if they have only four picks. In most drafts, good linebackers are available in the middle rounds.

Khary Campbell is an unrestricted free agent, and I would expect the Skins to try to re-sign him. Greg Blache has never been high on his ability to play regularly on defense, but Campbell is very bright, can fill in at multiple spots and is a demon on special teams. Alfred Fincher was a nice find as well as a teams guy/fill-in linebacker, and everyone loves the abandon with which he plays. I would imagine the unrestricted free agent gets re-signed, too.

Truth,
Okay, when you win the bid, do you submit the Redskins or the Lions. The dude is/was a Dallas fan.

I don't think I'd wish the Lions on anyone, even a D fan.

Posted by: _Stumped_1 | January 2, 2009 2:52 PM | Report abuse

I disagree with most fans who say that the Lines are the #1 need.

To me, Strong Side Linebacker is the #1 need. It (allong with maybe Left Guard) is the only position where the Redskins will have no one with starting experience on the Roster

If I was the Redskins, I would seriously consider using my top pick on an outside linebacker to start immediatly with Fletcher and McIntosh.

On the O-Line, G and C are more pressing than Tackle (With Samuals and Heyer projected starters and Jansen likely providing depth). Guards and Centers don't usually warrent a 1st round pick.

D-line can also get by as is. They have 7 players on the roster who they can get by with if they have to (Carter/Taylor/Evans/Daniels at End and Griff/Monty/Golston at DT)

At least 4 will likely be back. Not ideal, but my point is that Linebacker is the #1 need in the draft if not addressed elsewhere.

The problem I have MR skin is that you are based your dilike of Jasno on Vinny f-in cerrato... come on dude, he likes our team (vinny that is), he likes his multimillion dollar job... so who are you really goin got belieive.

And his lack of breaking news (if there really is a lack, especially when the team employs its own PR machine to get to you first) has nothing to do with his stories, it has to do with the grudge Snyder has always had against the truth telling newspaper.

Why else create your own spin machine.

-------------------------------

I don't believe either one of them (Cerrato or La Canfora).

So it's their livelihood? As if that ever stopped people from doing wrong.

Like I said, naivete is not my thing.

But since you mention "livelihood" I'll give you this - an account from last summer by someone I consider a strong source:

+++When I went to training camp two weeks back, La Canfora was dressed for work in flip flops, torn cargo shorts and a goofy looking hipster t-shirt, along with a hat pulled low over his head. I commented to a friend of mine, "he looks like a frat guy who's late to an 11:00 a.m. class." The other media people present were by no means dressed to the nines, but they all looked presentable. La Canfora looked like he was tailgating for John Mayer.
Who knows what that means, I just got the sense that La Canfora's lack of professional attire probably is a sign that he's not too professional in other realms. Maybe this could explain his hatred of Gibbs and the ongoing feud he has with Vinny. It would also stand to reason that this attitude is hurting him in developing contacts that break stories.
It makes no sense that Matt Moseley, Sportsline and Jay Glazer are breaking Redskins news, while La Canfora is getting worthless material from the guys he talks to who Gibbs can't stomach. Everyone is handling this thing wrong and, frankly, childishly and it won't get better until an outside party steps in to knock some sense into the Post and the Redskins. They both need each other. Two of the most visible businesses in the DC area can't continue this petty squabbling. This should be a happy marriage.+++

Maybe now Cindy can vouch for the fact that she dresses her reporter's properly too.

Posted by: MrRedskin21 | January 2, 2009 3:00 PM | Report abuse

I agree. Yup.

After the OL, and the kicking this is the most critical area of concern. Not the DL. And and all of the young tackles could play ends in a 3-4 alignment. Seems unlikely that Blache would go that direction ...

So, as Jason broached ... Taylor in the hybrid LB/DE role. Unlike Carter he seems very good at it.

This is a team where an FA like Terrell Suggs would be far more valuable than a Haynesworth.

They definitely need to move LaRon Landry in to tight safety/hybrid LB next year. That means Springs / Doughty / Horton play at free safety.
Be nice to draft one of these as well but I don't think that's going to happen.

They will likely need both a Haynesworth and a FA LB like Suggs. Plus pick up someone like Julius Peters formerly ranked/rated best LB in the game when he was with SF. Also another local boy. Because they may have to consider letting both Rocky Mac and Washington go.

Then use the draft entirely for the OL and kicking. They may be able to fix their OL line woes in one fell swoop with this draft. And that means, at least in this case, Vinnie wanting more picks makes sense. The more OL they draft the better. But they can't ignore the kicking.

Bottom line: they really needed 2-4 picks in the top 2 rounds. 4-6 in the top 3 rounds. Whoever is lucky enough to be in that situation may be able to rebuild their team overnight. Detroit, for example, with the picks they received from Dallas for Roy E. Williams.

Lastly, the proof is in the pudding... people have left bitter, there has been stories from the inside from anon's... we have yet to do anything good since snyder bought the team and vinny is a glorified scout.

If we were winning playoff games regularly, maybe even a division title or two, you may have a leg to stand on. but we are a joke b/c the front office is a joke...

Agents use our name to pony up more cash for their players, big time FA's come here and flame out, no name players get huge contracts to come here and prove they are no names.

I will give you that our drafts prolly are not as bad as some peeps say, but it is the lack of picks that hurt

all in all something is amiss, and it aint the people telling the story

They should be thinking O-line and ONLY O-line with their first two picks. I hope they don't draft a kicker. Surely they can find a decent vet to sign - someone more reliable than Suisham.

He did learn some things from Joe Gibbs. But not enough I guess ...

And the PR machine in the form of that website serves another purpose. It helps sell the Redskins. It sells merchandise. He makes money off of it.

MIA (the underdog and a nod to Redcoat and all things Tuna, honestly I like both of these teams)

SAN (my head says IND, but I'd like to see the Chargers step it up. Like many others I at the beginning of the season I thought the Chargers were the team to beat...and apparently they were, but not in the way I thought)

i'm picking the colts cuz san diego is a much better team than the colts. much much better team. and the fraud makes up for norv as a coach for that team.

i'm picking the cards for several reasons:
they're home,
they feel disrespected,
they have a hog on their team a coach to light up a fire under their butts.

Boo on all of you who basically "jumped" this guy for saying what he wanted to say. He didn't say anything disrespectful to anyone who may actually read the blog - unlike the alleged "owner".

He said in so many words that "jasno" sucks and that he doesn't believe the Post checks all their sources. I personally don't believe that WaPo doesn't check their sources. As someone pointed out it seems like a long way to go to spite the Redskins organization.

The only thing I ever had a problem with La Canfora over is the fact he called the league office to "verify" (I call it and still think he was trying to snitch) if the 'Skins were tampering. If he really wanted to know he could've contacted someone else other than the league office.

Colts, Ravens, Falcons, Eagles

I don't know if you can call 'em one, but Indy is my sleeper team.

There isn't any hype surrounding them this year for the first time in about 8-10 years.

Manning is the MVP. Peyton, that is. Either him or Michael Turner.

Oh and Adrian Peterson is just as much of a "drama queen", "diva", or my personal favorite, "quite cancer" as Clinton Portis.

So which of you brings her candy or twinkies every day? You, dealer?

Who sits across from her in class and stares all day? Is that you, alex?

And I'm going to assume that chrislarry, is the one who although lives on the other side of town, offers to carry her books and walk her home everyday? Right, cL?

Posted by: learnedhand1 | January 2, 2009 4:01 PM | Report abuse

When in doubt, go with the best QB for the situation.

IND vs MIN. IND is clearly a better team than SD. Rivers vs Manning is a wash. DECISION: Indi

ARI vs ATL. ATL clearly a better team, but Ryan is a rook while Warner is playoff-tested. Arizona is a different team at home. DECISION: Arizona.

PHI vs MIN. These two teams are enigmas. Philly can come out one week and drop 3 points, then the next come out and drop 44. Peterson is a game-breaker, but so is Westbrook. Mcnabb vs. TJack? Mcnabb, hands down. DECISION: Philly

MIA vs BAL. Baltimore has the better team. Miami by all accounts has overachieved all year. But Joe Flacco on the road, first playoff game in his career? I don't think Pennington is a sure thing, but I can't take a rookie on the road in the playoffs. DECISION: Miami.

By the way: Indi over NYG in the super bowl.

Get your facts right. I said I would treat all the RI posters with the respect and dignity they deserve. Sorry if that leaves you out.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I must respond to the respectful and dignified bleats of one Mr. Redskin21. He just called me a bicycle seat sniffer, and that hurts my feelings.

I completely CANNOT understand why people detest a reporter and waste their time commenting on it. If you don't like it, READ SOMETHING ELSE.

As I have said many times before - the number crunchers in accounting couldn't care less whether you like the reporter. The more you post, the more "popular" he is - thereby more likely that he WILL STAY.

The "inside word" is that it's way too early. They are on vacation. When they come back, they'll evaluate existing players, discuss needs, formulate a strategy for free agency.

Redskins Insider is the only place where we formualte a new strategy every day.

redmv, i know what you're talking about...i saw that too...and i was pretty neutral in this...i didn't believe anything 21 was saying, i've been pretty harsh on jasno as well and if you re-read my comments i was never in an argument with either side.

i started this mess today and when i came back it had been blown up...like i said earlier my fault! it didn't need to get any more attention that it had already gotten last night.

lmg, sorry dude...from what i heard ole miss kicked a$$??? but i have the same feeling as redmv about ole miss...or MSU or tennessee U or bama or lsu or oklahoma...

Is this based on first hand knowledge? Have you actually been to any of these schools? Or are you just carrying around a lot of prejudice?

Posted by: talent_evaluator | January 2, 2009 9:22 PM | Report abuse

Suggs would be an excellent replacement for Washington...

The Skins should draft an OLB and dump Campbell (the special team blocking was not so special).

****** CONTEST (continued): Make a statement that will be kind of true one year from now. The most outrageous statement that is in the ballpark, wins:

Phillip Daniels is named comeback player of the year with 9.5 sacks and is then cut by Vinny Cerrato to make cap room for the uncapped season.

hey t_e, chill out big cuz.

I was only semi BS'ing about the Ole Miss game. But, to watch that game as a BLACK man, knowing the history of the school, the plight that individuals suffered in the south, in that STATE is unsettling, you may not feeling because there is no way you can relate to any of the things I'm talking about, can you?

No one is carrying around any sort of prejudice, but I can almost goddamn guarantee that if you were in the southeast part of D.C., at this time of night, I guran-damn-tee you, you'd be "unsettled".

Assuming you are that 60 something year old white dude... FROM THE SOUTH...

Which explains why that post may have hurt your feelings. You should remember the "good ol'" days well, should you?

Given your um, err, "attributes", and your affiliation with the southern region of the US, I think the latter part of YOUR own damn question may apply to YOU.

I don't have a problem with any other race, color, or religion other than mine. I do not carry hate, or am I bitter about the past, BUT I do have a problem when people like you, particularly white older guys like you from the south, come off like YOUR GODDAMN feelings are hurt. People like you reminded me of present-day German citizens. They like to walk around pretending the holocaust never happened, and get angry when you remind them or ask them about it. And yes this is first hand knowledge because I toured over there.

Makes me understand how you were so quick to crack jokes about a KID being decapitated, regardless if it were his own account. You do know that kid was black, didn't you? Yeah, I'm sure you did.

In closing, you sir, yes you sir, are truly a low life classless bastard. Your narrow minded, condescending, self-serving, "good ol' boy" like post just confrimed it for me.

Did you ever notice that ugly or unattractive people are the first ones to call another person ugly?

RI from a year ago:

"Rocky had a history of knee injuries in college - several teams red-flagged his medical condition entering the draft and viewed him as a risk - but when healthy he is very athletic, can make plays and was getting better in coverage."

Where is Lavar when you need him? How many balls did Fletcher drop this year. He may have worse hands the Los.

8 TEAM PLAYOFF WOULD HAVE BEEN PERFECT THIS YEAR!!!!!! Man, that would have been great.... WILBON wrote a great article about this today.......

Sarcastic, yes! But no, seriously.

I think a 6 team group would be perfect. Give two teams byes so you don't take the little darlings away from their studies for too long.

Byes to Florida and Oklahoma, say.

The next four in the mystery rankings from USC, Utah, OSU, PSU etc. fight it out as the wildcards.

SMACK,

I don't mind that scenario at all actually. I think the controversy for # 1 and # 2 would be good, but just as it today...... Nothing would be different with the exception of the games after...... how sweet that would be!!!

woh...what i miss? AGAIN!

it is really hard for whites to know how a minority would feel when there are camera shots of the stadiums in those schools i mentioned and indianapolis colts. there is NO WAY, NO WAY you could put yourself in our shoes. not even in south east dc, cuz you know if something happened to you or you lost your ipod in south east SOMEONE WILL PAY! and not in iraq, not in afghanistan, not in japan, not in china. they all love white people EVERYWHERE.

reason for that is that the white race, is revered for its COLOR and features around the world. that is a cold hard fact. you go anywhere in the world, even in japan, the so-called pure/superior asian race is envious of whites, their features and they sorta already have the color. the middle east...the lighter you are the better off you are. in the subcontinent it's all about being light skin.

there hasn't been a holocaust or slavery based on the color white. there might have been retalition on the white color but never has anyone said "ohh it was hard being white in those days".

so te, there is no prejudice and i'm sorry if i offended you but i cannot explain to you or ask you to put yourself in my shoes because you simply cannot, to describe how i feel. i do not judge on person's appearance.

did you hear what happened on the air tran flight at reagan national? how do you explain that? and you think i'm being prejudice and that was 4 out of 92 people that "mis-understood" and more "misunderstanding" followed by more people...c'mon man!

Posted by: dealer1 | January 3, 2009 12:15 AM | Report abuse

Dealer, although you may have a point that there hasn't been slavery or holocaust based on the color white, there sure have been a lot of whites victimized by slavery AND holocaust. Hitler's third reich immediately comes to mind. The treatment of the Irish in the late 1800's and early 1900's in this country. The treatment of the Scottish and Irish by their own white counterparts in England, and the Moors in Sicily and Italy.
Dealer, I cannot put myself in your shoes because I have no idea what you have seen or what you have been through. I do not know if you suffered through the injustices of not so many years ago in the South (or the rest of that country for that matter), and there is no doubt that prejudice exists today. Having said that, I'm tired of excuses, I've met many successful people of many different races in this country and I see prejudice as just another hurdle to overcome. Everybody has hurdles to overcome in life to get to where they want to be. Anyone that lets these hold them back is simply too lazy or unmotivated and is just using these things as an excuse. Without going into great detail I have struggled through some things that most would find impossible to overcome while others may find as just another day at the office. Yet I still drive to find my own version of success. I guess my point is that while all these obstacles are real, they are not an adequate excuse for failure.

Is this the same as the principle we learned in fourth grade, "it takes one to know one"? Or Pee Wee Herman's "I know you are but what am I"? If this is true, then wouldn't it mean that a "lowlife classless bastard" would be the first one to call another person a "lowlife classless bastard"? That seems harsh.

No, I hadn't noticed that until you pointed it out, Red. You learn something every day on Redskins Insider. Thanks for answering my question.

At 5:46 yesterday I posted that my RI New Year's resolution was to get off everyone's Loathe List. This is going to be harder than I thought. I might actually lose 15 pounds, eat better, and go to the gym everyday before I'm off all the Lists.

See you later. Gotta make myself a bowl of hot oatmeal and head to the gym.

How many people would love to have Bill Parcells as GM? That to me would be the best thing Dannyboy could do. It won't happen, but it would be a very nice dream. At least we would draft properly.

+Contest:

1. Jayson Taylor posts 13 sack season

2. London Fletcher named pro-bowl starter for first time in career for a season statistically less impressive than '08

3. Dan Snyder demotes Cerrato to ball-boy and promotes Morocco Brown to GM

4. Devin Thomas has breakout season, catches 75 balls for 1260 yds and 7TDs. Get named to pro-bowl.

5. Carlos Rogers has 7 interceptions on the year.

Too much sniping here - boring! Need to keep it on real sports topics.

Top Needs:

Vinnie's not going anywhere so we need some great scouts who can sell and convince Vinnie/Dan.

Top needs are OL, DL and LB.

Take the best players period in the draft. Forget Kickers! Get a FA.

DL as is will not suffice unless you are ok with more of the same. Need a DL like the Giants as our goal. It'll take a while with the Skins track record.

Posted by: myPostId1000 | January 3, 2009 7:15 PM | Report abuse

the redskins need to go get Ahmad Brooks for Virginia for their linebacker. He is young, he would come extremely cheap and i still think he has a chance to be a really good player in the league when given the right chance. He is a local guy and i think he is a playmaker. THink about it and contact somebody

Posted by: mrob11ster | January 5, 2009 10:57 AM | Report abuse

Linebacker is not the #1 need in the draft.

You can find linebackers as mid-tier free agents that can be solid performers.

This team needs to stay focused on the defensive line and not get sidetracked into soliciting for players at other positions on defense.

Defense starts up front.

That's why the Giants can start a secondary with a lot less talent than the Redskins have and yet shut people down and win the Super Bowl.

Posted by: leopard09 | January 6, 2009 2:51 PM | Report abuse

I don't think its a question of what comes first, I think it is obvious that we need, at a minimum, three top tier players, either from the draft or from FA; an OL, and I'm not sophisticated enough to know if we need an OT or a G/C more; a DL, either end or tackle, who can improve our pass rush, and an OLB. Obviously 2 LBs, more O linemen, and a DT AND a DE would be beeeuteeeful, but I'd be happy with one from each line and a LB. Thats the minimum we need, plus for either of the rook WRs to step up.
