Redskins cancel practice because of snowstorm

The Redskins have canceled today's final full practice ahead of Monday's game against the Giants at FedEx Field, Jason Reid reports, because, as you might have heard, there's a bit of snow falling.

The team is preparing for the game with at least a bit of certainty: They now know who the general manager will be, with the resignation of Vinny Cerrato and appointment of Bruce Allen on Thursday, but they don't know what that will mean for them individually, Rick Maese writes today.

Players say they realize major change likely awaits the organization once the season ends Jan. 3, but no one -- perhaps not even Allen -- knows just how sweeping those changes might be.
"If you sit there and worry about that, you'll really go out and have bad performances," said defensive end Phillip Daniels, "and that will really hurt you and any chance of coming back. You have to go out and just play football."

For another take on the Ashburn shakeup, Tom "Boz" Boswell writes that "few teams will benefit from 'addition by subtraction' more than the Redskins should with Cerrato's departure."

Snyder haters (you know who you are) can take some satisfaction from a story in today's Wall Street Journal.

When Six Flags declared bankruptcy, the shareholders lost control of the company to the debt holders. Snyder had put together a package under which he would still be Chairman of the Board as the debt holders took control of the company. Apparently the biggest debt holder balked and it wants to throw Snyder out completely. Not only would he not be Chairman of the Board, he wouldn't even have a seat on the board. The article estimates that Snyder and his investment partners (Cerrato was one) lost about $50 million. As one analyst said, "They lost a bunch of money. It's nothing to brag about."

Good news for Redskins fans? Not at all. He has more time now to run the show:

"A person close to Mr. Snyder said he would 'seriously consider' remaining board chairman if asked, but remains torn on continuing the role. Lately he has been focused on the Redskins, having just replaced his top personnel executive amid a disappointing season."

Right. Cerrato resigns and they cancel practice. Bet the Giants don't let up just because of a blizzard. If Vinny were still here these guys would be a lot better motivated than with Mr. Nice Guy.

Man if only the team had some kind of way to practice during in climate weather. If only there were some way to put a football field in a place where heavy snow storms or rain storms could not effect the scrimmage.

Sadly no such place yet exists to my knowledge. Its depressing that no one invented some kind of structure which could do this, but I don't see anyone inventing that.

That's one way to get even with those nasty old bond-holders. Lucky us.

Snydes can focus on Johnny Rockets right?

He should be holed-up in the underground lab of his Potomac mansion brainstorming new cheeseburger combos.

Hey, Alex, if we still had global warming this waste of money wouldn't be necessary. Unfortunately, that UN Conference in Copenhagen ended global warming and now we're gonna have a winter like none you've ever seen before. Al Gore probably won't even be able to fly home before Groundhog Day.

BTW, does anyone know what Rock's comments were about Vinny Cerratto?

I'm wondering if it's one of those cases where Rock said: "Vinny is a schmuck and no one here could stand him. Good riddance."

Only to turn around and say: "You media guys made my comments seem worse than it was".

Gotta love those turnarounds...

Look LS,

Just b/c global warming scientists fudged the data, changed numbers, suppressed contrary evidence, quashed dissenting opinions through personal vendettas and won't publicly release their data and research methods doesn't mean global warming isn't real.

They did WHAT? Look, global warming exists until the Nobel Prize whiner, Al Gore, says that it doesn't exist. He's the ultimate judge of this.

Good point.

Kind of like the whole nuclear weapons thing.

Since Nobel Prize winner Obama declared a world without nuclear weapons, we have nothing to worry about.

Source: Blache already has interviewed for Redskins job
Posted by Mike Florio on December 19, 2009 10:21 AM ET
Unless they conducted a search even faster than they recruited Albert Haynesworth, the Redskins interviewed multiple candidates for General Manager at a time when they already had someone doing the job.

So it should come as no surprise that they're already interviewing candidates for the position of head coach, despite the fact that they already have one.

Per a league source, the Redskins have interviewed defensive coordinator Greg Blache for the position currently held by his boss, Jim Zorn.

It's unknown when the interview specifically occurred.

By interviewing Blache, the Redskins have complied in advance with the Rooney Rule, which requires at least one minority candidate to be interviewed for every head-coaching vacancy.

We recently speculated, based on the manner in which the Vinny Cerrato-Bruce Allen flip-flop was handled by the team, that the Redskins already have complied with the Rooney Rule as it relates to the head-coaching position.

So, basically, the Redskins are free -- at any time -- to announce that Zorn is out, and to announce that Mike Shanahan (or anyone else, for that matter) is in.

As we pointed out last night, Shanahan definitely is in play for the job. Though it's not a done deal, he has been talking to the powers-that-be for weeks, if not months.

Cue the denials from Blache and/or the Redskins and/or Shanahan and/or Shanahan's minions in the media.

Maybe, if I'm really lucky, Mike Wise will call me a "cretin" again, too.

Everyone has their political hot buttons, thats his, its no different than Mike Wise's harping on the Redskins name, no different from 9/11 Truthers, or the Birthers who cant accept Obama is a US citizen. They are just like the Pro-lifers and the "they took are jobs" types. All the same, some individuals take their crazy to an extreme, so if the worst Florio will do is blog I can sleep at night with that.

Cancelled practice!? They don't have a contingency plan!?

So, the Redskins are going go shopping and play Xbox while the Giants practice . . . that's great.

Posted by: BrooklynSkins | December 19, 2009 1:17 PM | Report abuse

Probably won't be Gruden or Shanahan, it'll probably be Tom Cruise.

As for 'practice' being canceled ... so what? Look what practicing has done for 'em so far this season. Maybe 'no-practice' will be the new mantra under Coach Cruise.

Doesn't matter who the GM and/or coach is, until Snyder sells, it's gonna be business as usual.
