Redskins' Cerrato Show Debuts

From Jason LaCanfora: Redskins executive vice president Vinny Cerrato began his new radio show today by defending its existence. He assured listeners that devoting four hours a week to "Inside the Red Zone with Vinny Cerrato" would not be a distraction or prevent him from overseeing the club.
Cerrato was criticized by others around the league for doing the show here and here .
Cerrato defended Clinton Portis in his dust up with Comcast/ESPN 980 AM personality Brian Mitchell and said he was entirely on Portis's side on the matter. Cerrato said he believes Mitchell is overly critical of Portis. Cerrato also defended Portis' remarks to the Washington Post last week in which he discussed his desire to play in a different system behind a better offensive line. Cerrato did not address how Portis's teammates felt about the remarks but chalked the comments up to Portis's overall frustration.
Host George Michael appeared to indicate Cerrato will now only do the show once a week, but a Redskins spokesman said today at noon that there has been no change in format that he knows of and the show will air for two hours on Mondays and Fridays throughout the season.
UPDATE: To clarify, the twice-a-week schedule was announced in an email to the ESPN 980 staff on Wednesday by Dennis Glasgow, the vice president of operations for Red Zebra broadcasting.

PSP has a negative comment on everything, I do not think he has ever been positive.

Really? I've probably been the staunchest defender of Jason Campbell on this blog.

I also defended Santana Moss as big-time WR when everybody jumped on the "big" WR bandwagon, saying Moss couldn't get it done.

I was also a staunch defender of Gibbs when he was under scrutiny.

I also gave Zorn deep praise for his massive improvement from week 1 to week 2.

Sorry I don't placate to Snyder and Cerrato like they're NFL masterminds and perform every detail of their work to perfection. I don't know if you actually realize this, but there ARE situations in which Snyder, Cerrato, this organization, and this team deserve criticism.

Cerrato says he "has the time" (Oh, I'm not doing anything...), but what if another GM wants to call him to talke about a trade and he's on the air? The GM would just move on (probably a good thing for the fans, considering Vinny's propensity for strolling home with a handful of magic beans).

'Cerrato said he believes Mitchell is overly critical of Portis'

Just as Vinny protects his team against criticism here... which I guess he has to do.

Nothing to see there...at least larry Michaels doesnt really sugarcoat it too much... he said once I am employed by the 'Washington redskins'.

So I guess its sell your soul to the devil for a good job, or be a beat reporter...

Not many trades get done during the season. Picking up guys off waivers is the only action for GM's right now. And they are players that most likely will sit the bench unless your whole unit is injured (Anthony Mix last season). Other than scouting college games (which Vinny has scouts that do that) I'd say it's pretty quiet right now for Vinny.

There are far worse things happening in the world than Cerrato having a radio show.

Posted by: Lisa | September 19, 2008 10:53 AM

In the grand scheme of life, Vinny's show is not that big of a deal and it may even prove to be entertaining and insightful. But in the Redskins' world Vinny & Dan are the powers that be and, right or wrong, they are the ones who get the blame when things don't go well. There have been some good personnel decisions and some bad ones during their tenure. But they like the big splash that gets attention and when those moves go bad, they REALLY go bad & a bitter taste is left with the diehard fan. So when the opportunity to strike back at Vinny arises, the rancid bile within causes hate to spew forth beyond what might be a rational response to whatever Vinny is actually doing.

If its and buts were candy and nuts, we'd all have a Merry Christmas.

As coach Joe always said, "we're all in this together". All of the good decisions and all of the bad decisions that have occurred over the years still make up who we are as a Redskin organization today. Let's move forward united with what we have and make things better. Holding grudges will do this organization no good at all.

Posted by: Anonymous | September 19, 2008 11:26 AM | Report abuse

If Zorn gets this offense up and running and Blache/Jason Taylor keep this defense in the top 10, Vinny will look great. If not, he'll look like he already looks...like a tad pole.

They should be looking at film from the 100 something college games this week, they should be looking at film from 16 NFL games right now.
Trolling for under the radar guys.

Even if you edit down the college games to just a portion of plays it s still hours and hours of footage to watch.

Posted by: Alex35332 | September 19, 2008 11:27 AM | Report abuse

Smack - Do you earn bonus points if Parker gets 100 yards? If not, I'd keep Moss since Parker rarely gets into the endzone (albeit Week 1) but he has a good shot at 100 yards each week.

Posted by: Chris | September 19, 2008 11:16 AM

No bonuses, no points for carries, no RB allowed in the Flex. I made a ridiculous counteroffer, so it's probably dead in the water. Thanks for the input everyone.

This beef between JLaC and the Skins is prob a good thing for both sides.

It's the TMZ faction of DC football. There's no such thing as bad publicity. With all this ranting and raving about how bad an idea this will be from JLaC and the SportsReporters and Florio of PFT; how many people you think are listening in?

Alot.

Then you start to listen to it and you think the show ain't half bad. A bunch of national and local guest.

Can you atleast say if they are NFC East, NFC, or AFC Execs?

People hate on other people easily when they routinely don't have to be named. It's just they're opinion.

Have these execs won any superbowls lately? Anything?

I'm sure Vinny & Co. have a "list" of players that they would immediately sign and a player or two they would release from the Skins if one of them were cut. So, if Vinny is not immediately available, one of his other go-to guys would make the call without Vinny. Otherwise, I'm sure the waiver claim could wait 2 hours.

No. I give credit where credit is due. I said the FO made great moves in trading the draft day picks to acquire more (even though I wasn't happy about the picks themselves).

I give the FO credit sticking behind Campbell in their search for a head coach.

I give the FO credit for bringing in CP, Moss, Thomas, Rabach, ARE, Fletcher, Springs, Griffin, Carter, Washington, and Smoot.

I have ALWAYS given Snyder praise for his undying commitment to the team and willingness to do whatever it takes (in his mind) to produce a winner.

But I don't give a free pass when results don't show up. Sorry, I have a higher standard than that.

Posted by: Chris | September 19, 2008 11:47 AM

Yea, just like he did with the Saints. Oh wait...

"At the end of the day, beating people up on both sides of the ball at the line and being able to run the ball better than the other guy often wins out. If you can stuff it down their throats and they can't do the same to you, well, then your team is in pretty good shape. Sunday, the Skins accomplished both."

"Kudos to the O Line for playing with more aggressiveness and muscle than we had seen in a long while. Kudos to Clinton Portis for running like mad. Kudos to Jim Zorn for the reverse call and Santana Moss for continuing to juke people out of their you-know-whats in any one-on-one situation with the ball in his hands. (He was unbelievable whether going straight ahead or side-to-side)."

"With that macro look out of the way, let's start with the QB play. Believe it or not, I was getting JC-bashing emails during the game, right up until about 30 seconds before he threw the bomb to Moss. I mean, I was still getting "Give Colt a chance," crapola in the second half of that game. Pluh-eeze. Come on COCers. Get a grip."

"Two games. No picks. No fumbles. That's over a span of 63 attempts, peeps. Let's not forget that. Remember a year ago when it took like 10 weeks for a WR to catch a TD pass? Well, Moss has two of them already this year, and none was bigger than the 67-yarder Sunday. Ten different Skins have already caught passes from JC this season.

So is that enough to stop the relentless scrutiny of the kid? At least for a week?"

"As for the offense, the fans couldn't wait for Chris Cooley to catch a few balls, and he was very active Sunday. My man Larry in Brooklyn brought up one play in particular in an email last night, and I agree that aside from the bomb to Moss and that huge inside slant on 4th-and-2 at the end, it may have been the biggest pass play in the game."

"On defense, man, great performance. The three-and-out late in the game was vital. (Skins held the ball for 9:15 in the fourth quarter despite trailing at the start of it. Pretty impressive). 250 yards? Excellent work from them."

"Jason Taylor was 100 times better than he was in the opener and they kept Drew Brees off balance with a real pass rush. Getting to Brees early was huge and Cornelius Griffin's sack was maybe even bigger, as the Skins finally got a real interior push and let Brees know he couldn't step up into every throw. The Saints tried to run right at him early, as we knew they would, but the guy was making plays yesterday."

"With a legit pass rush, the secondary finally had some help and that was a big factor in all of the turnovers. Demetric Evans made a huge play on the late pass - his deflection resulted in Chris Horton's second pick - and Brees was under duress much of the day. Couple that wit totally stifling the run game, and you've got a massive day from the D Line."

"Horton was unreal. Always around the ball. Right place, right time. Great instincts. He had a fumble recovery and INT on his first two series (Saints TE Jeremy Shockey was awful. Looked like he didn't want to be there. That fumble was inexcusable and he never got going after that.)."

Yea, excuses all around for the Saints. Jasno gave no credit to us whatsoever for that win, right?

JLa who clearly has no love for Danny or his inner circle makes smart remarks on this blog for sure. He doesn't seem obsessed like Vinny or Larry Michaels who seem to mention it all the time. It all starts with Danny and his napoleon complex and goes from there I think. The whole thing to me is just pathetic though. As much disdain as I have for Danny I would at least hope that a guy who runs 3 large companies (probably more i don't know) who have thicker skin.

Posted by: Skinz | September 19, 2008 12:03 PM | Report abuse

Why the hell does Vinny get ripped for everything? The guy has a radio show for a grand total of 4 lousy hours a week. These same Post reporter crybabies that complained about how there was no accountability or visibility in the Front Office now rips the guy when he makes himself more available to the public and is there to be accountable for the decisions made by the team. To say this is unprecedented is again a hollow argument. Aside from the fact that practically every head coach in the league does several radio/TV/press appearances throughout the week and this takes far more than 4 total hours; coaches are much busier in-season than GMs. The bulk of a GMs job is done in the OFFSEASON, scouting players for the draft and free agency, etc. The in-season work in this regard is minimal, and spot duty at best, i.e. when there is an injury, etc. Even pushing that obvious point aside; let's compare Vinny to Jerry Jones, who besides being the owner is also the GM in Dallas. Jones has a radio show, constantly goes after bad character players like T.O. and Pacman, yet is consistently praised as a smart football guy and great GM/owner by national media. The man hasn't won a damn playoff games in 12 years! We've had more success than that, yet Vinny gets ripped. Face the facts, Vinny has done a better job than Jerah Jones, and most GMs in the league for that matter. We have a lot of talent and have had recent success, plus we are built more now to be successful for a long time. Give the guy some credit and stop with this personal agenda, jerk off.

Fine, believe everything you read from conveniently "unnamed sources" who "echo" each other. Probably Matt Millen and Cincinnati's GM if these "sources" even actually exist. I bet you could find "sources" that think, like any reasonable person who can think for themselves, that this is no big deal, but of course you won't get those viewpoints here. Did you ever consider that PR, being available and accountable to the public, and getting the CORRECT news out therte about the team may be part of a GM's job too? Yeah, that's what I thought you dope.

It's interesting to me all the hubub about Vinny doing this show, when just about every Redskin HC has down a TV show/ Radio show deal for the past 30 years.

I'd say a HC in the middle of the season is at LEAST as busy as the de facto GM, given he's preparing for games. The GM may be busy, but his primetime is in the offseason.

I think this is much ado about nothing. If the world crumbled while he was on the air, I'm sure someone would come and get him, and he'd handle whatever needed to be handled.

As for criticisms from other "unnamed execs/GM's/sources", show me a time when they say something positive about another team during the season - why not be critical? You might actaully start an uprising by the fans after all, to such an extent where they boo the home team in it's FIRST HOME GAME OF THE SEASON while trailing by ONE POINT to a team that said angry fans felt their team had no shot at defeating before the game.

Seriously people, it's good to question where this team is headed and keep the ol' hairy eyeball on the management when we haven't been very good in a long time, but it's getting simply silly these days. Examples:

1. Jumping off cliffs over losing by 9 at the defending champ's place to open the season.
2. Declaring the draft a bust, when said draft we are talking about occured THIS YEAR.
3. Crying for Campbell to be benched after ONE GAME, and in some cases, asking for Colt...WHAT!?
4. Declaring Zorn unfit to be a head coach...after his FIRST GAME.

----

How 'bout some reasonable criticisms, like:

1. Should we have drafted more DE/DL/OL help instead of skill position? What about an LB?
2. How did Tryon make the team? He was awful in the preseason.
3. Can our "checkdowns" go to the first down marker? Please?
4. Why even think about Santana returning punts? He's finally healthy...
5. Why don't we have a nice jumbotron? We make enough money as a team...

Just some thoughts.

I usually don't do politics on here, but this Obama bashing is really starting to piss me off. Let's put the sh_t into perspective, shall we?

Let me get this right

I'm a little confused. Let me see if I have this straight.....(hope I'm not
offending anyone)

* If you grow up in Hawaii, raised by your grandparents, you're "exotic,
different."

* Grow up in Alaska eating moose burgers, a quintessential American story.

* If your name is Barack you're a radical, unpatriotic Muslim.

* Name your kids Willow, Trig and Track, you're a maverick.

* Graduate from Harvard law School and you are unstable.

* Attend five different small colleges before graduating, you're well
grounded.

* If you spend three years as a brilliant community organizer, become the
first black editor of the Harvard Law Review, create a voter registration
drive that registers 150,000 new voters, spend twelve years as a
constitutional Law professor, spend eight years as a state senator
representing a district with over 750,000 people, become chairman of the
state senate's Health and Human Services committee, spend four years in the
United States Senate representing a state of 13 million people while
sponsoring 131 bills and serving on the Foreign Affairs, Environment and
Public Works and Veteran's Affairs committees, you don't have any real
leadership experience.

* If your total resume is: local weather girl, four years on the city
council and six years as the mayor of a town with less than 7,000 people,
twenty months as the governor of a state with only 650,000 people, then
you're qualified to become the country's second highest ranking executive.

* If you have been married to the same woman for nineteen years while
raising two beautiful daughters, all within Protestant churches, you're not
a real Christian.

* If you cheated on your first wife with a rich heiress, and left your
disfigured wife and married the heiress the next month, you're a Christian.

If you teach responsible, age appropriate sex education, including the
proper use of birth control, you are eroding the fiber of society.

* If , while governor, you staunchly advocate abstinence only, with no
other option in sex education in your state's school system while your
unwed teen daughter ends up pregnant , you're very responsible.

* If your wife is a Harvard graduate lawyer who gave up a position in a
prestigious law firm to work for the betterment of her inner city
community, then gave that up to raise a family, your family's values don't
represent America's.

* If you're husband is nicknamed "First Dude", with at least one DWI
conviction and no college education, who didn't register to vote until age
25 and once was a member of a group that advocated the secession of Alaska
from the USA, your family is extremely admirable.

OK, much clearer now.

It seems to me that it is not so much a question of Vinny's time, but Vinnie's focus. The purpose of a show that he hosts is to promote the team, entertain the fans, and most importantly share the front office's perspective. None of these things should be things he is thinking about. His mind should be on what he needs to do to make the team better and make the team successful. A regular talk show diverts him from that focus.
