Redskins coaches will no longer receive pensions starting July 1

Let's update and clarify a story that Jason Reid brought you over the weekend. The Redskins informed their employees last week that they'd no longer be receiving pension benefits. We initially thought all team employees except for coaches and players would have their pensions pulled, but that's apparently not the case.

Larry Kennan, the staff director for the NFL Coaches Association, said that Redskins coaches will no longer be receiving their pensions, beginning July 1.

When teams began pulling out of the league's pension program last year, Kennan was outspoken with his objections. But with a new coaching staff in place at Redskins Park, most of whom accepted their positions in the past couple of months, Kennan said "it's a little bit different with the Redskins."

"It's our understanding that they took these positions and understood what they would be getting in return," Kennan said. "It was a little different last year when all of a sudden, they decided to take this away from everyone without even talking with us."

For now, the Redskins are in the minority in freezing the pensions. Kennan says nine teams pulled out of the program last year, after owners voted to make it optional for teams. Thus far, Washington and Tampa Bay are the only teams to notify the league of their intentions this year, Kennan said, but more could opt out before the May 15 deadline.

"When we say that we're upset with the owners, it's not all the owners. We're only talking about 11 right now," he said. "Most of the owners are still offering their coaches these pensions."

Kennan calls it a matter of respect and while he says coaches are well compensated, he wishes owners valued coaches enough to discuss the pensions and other benefits with them before making changes.

I know, but think of the politics involved with giving a guy a 21 mil payout while ending your pension plan for other employees.

Should one rat get all the cheese while others starve in retirement?

You can't redo a contract twice in the same 12 month consecutive period. McNabb's contract was redone in July 2009, so you have to wait atleast until then.....

So you can clamour about that in August....

That why these journalists are always trying to start gossip because they have never been in a locker room and dont know how that works.

Redskins hire new general manager
Michael David Smith
April 27, 2010, 4:15
In a stunning turn of events, Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snyder announced today that he had accepted the immediate resignation of Bruce Allen from his position as general manager. Furthermore, to the shock of the entire football world, Snyder also announced that he had hired a Boston-based blogger known as "BeantownGreg1" as his new general manager. Beantown, in his first remarks to the assembled press, stated, "I've always thought that I know way more than everyone else, and now I'm going to prove it. One thing's for sure, there'll be no more rumors spread from this place for people to cut all over the internet." Beantown will apparently begin the work of constructing an entirely new roster in his own image. More to come.

They are just following the American Way of talking loud and authoritatively to influence opinion.

Politicians, radio talk show hosts, bloggas, auto mechanics, drunk guys at bars, and anybody selling anything does it with skill and flare.

Me?: I listen to drunk guys bars for the right information.

Another source of great info is anyone who's getting shafted in a divorce proceeding.

And above all, never listen to anybody in jail or rehab.

And if your doctor or lawyer tells you to do something, do the opposite 1st hoping they're wrong.

Dudes who follow the logic of a rambling poster like mistamoe should also be avoided.

'Cuz they'll get to the end of what they're talkin' about before you realize they have nothing to say.

Just like this post.

Trade for Ted Ginn? Give me a cheap hungry newbie anyday...

I like Leon Washington as a player...but there are SERIOUS doubts about his ability to return from that injury. Also IF he gets healthy he is much more than a KR and would want reps at RB/3rd down back. It seems like our backfield is full at the moment so trading a pick would have been retarted. Now if they had traded a 5th rounder before signing Parker/LJ...maybe I could agree....but again Washington's ability was in his legs...and he took a nasty injury.

What else ya got Z? and please no Air Craft Carriers as mobile empanada carts ok?

Posted by: chrislarry

look at the list of cheap hungry 5th round guys that were all newbies when they got picked. Its just above. See a lot of talent there? Didn't think so. That's what 5th rounders mostly are -- and it doesn't get prettier as you hit round 6 and 7.

As for Leon Washington, yeah, the injury is an issue. Got no feel for how it will play out. Very dangerous runner and returner ... if he comes back. Of course, we let Quinton Ganther go for free, and he ran for more TDs than our entire backfield did in 2009.

We used a 4th rounder on an LB, both Morrison and sims were traded for 5th rounders. Both guys avg 100+ tackles a year and both are 28 or younger.

I assume this pension plan is something that is provided by the NFL that teams now have the option to contribute to and not each team having to offer it's own plan.

How long does the average coach stay with a team? 4-5 years? Not really long enough to warrant a pension from the team, I'd say.

My company discontinued it's pension plan a few years ago but all associates who were here prior to it going away are still eligible.

Now I just need to occupy a desk long enough for the old timers to die off so my plan will get bought out.

Too lazy to dig into this in detail, but are the Redskins eliminating the pension contributions and disbursing an equivalent amount as salary, or are they simply eliminating the pension contributions and keeping salaries the same?

If the former, which I doubt, I agree with those posted above that this allows the employee to make his or her own investment decisions as opposed to being at the mercy of the pension managers.

If the latter, which I expect, it's yet another example of Dan Snyder being all about profit, yet another reason for me to despise amoral capitalism, and etc.

Its been proven that former athletes, in particular star athletes, are horrible coaches and judges of talent because they feel that everyone should be able to do what they did. I.E. Michael Jordan. I bet a dime to a dollar that Kiper and McShay probably know more about football than the panel on the NBC Sunday night broadcast. Kiper and McShay spend months scouting these prospects and talking to NFL scouts. Just because someone doesnt get drafted in a particular round doesnt mean they dont know what they are talking about. Like everyone else they have biases. Kiper is a self proclaimed Notre Dame homer. That is probably why he had a hard on for Clausen. Evaluating players isnt rocket science, you dont need a specialized degree for it. I think you have to have a good understanding of how players transition to the NFL and remain objective. I think some people on this blog could do what they do given the time and resources. Do you think you have to spend 20 years in the business to do what Cerrato did?

The Skins have made 18 picks in the 5th round from '95 to 2009. 8 of them played under 32 games. The other 10 are:

Jamie Asher, Brad Badger, Leomont Evans, Rich Owens, Anthony Montgomery, Twan Russell, Keith Thibodeaux, Jamel Williams, Darien McCants and Robert Royal.

18 picks, 1/2 not worthy of mention. Does anyone in this list remotely resemble desean jax?

Posted by: zcezcest1 | April 27, 2010 4:26 PM | Report abuse

I was speaking more to Terrence Austin who we drafted this year.

Posted by: skinsfanintampa

300 guys were drafted in round 7 from 2000 to 2007. 3 of those 300 made a Pro Bowl. 1% chance. 39 guys are listed as having been a starter in 2 or more seasons. 13%.

60% of the picks played 16 games or fewer.

Is there a chance we grabbed another desean jax? Yes. Is is much more than a snowball's chance? No.

Ginn would solve a real problem for this team.

I'm fine with Austin pick, mind you. Its an attempt to solve a real problem with this team -- though if he's like most 7th round picks, he won't solve the problem.

How is it "generosity" when someone else forces their hand into your pocket to give it to somebody else?

Cork, I have no doubt that you are a Kennedy worshipper. I always wondered something about Ted. If healthcare for the underpriveleged was his life long dream, how come he didn't unilaterally donate his personal wealth to the cause?

If Michael Moore, who is a millionaire, is so concerned, how come he doesn't unilaterally donate his wealth and create a non-profit that gets underpriveleged into healthcare?

It seems that the lefties like to bark about "generosity", so long as it happens on someone else's coin, and they can use Uncle Sam's baton to make sure it happens.

Three former NU players set for NFL tryouts
April 27, 2010 4:06 PM | No Comments
By Teddy Greenstein

Former Northwestern receivers Zeke Markshausen and Andrew Brewer and safety Brendan Smith have earned invites to NFL camp tryouts this weekend.

Markshausen will work out for the Bears, while Brewer heads to New England and Smith vies to impress the Washington Redskins.

Smith, a two-time team captain and a four-year starter, played in just eight games last season because of a dislocated thumb. Smith had offseason hip surgery and said recently: "I'm already faster than when I was playing (during the season)."

Said NU coach Pat Fitzgerald: "I'm really excited for Zeke, Brew and Smitty. They've all worked extremely hard and each has overcome some significant adversity to now have a chance to try and earn a roster spot with the NFL team. I couldn't be prouder of these three guys."

P1funk, the real joke is that we tax labor, read:income, instead of wealth. Why do you think that Warren Buffet, The Oracle of Omaha, thinks income taxes should be higher? Because he hardly pays any compared to the wealth he controls. Start taxing wealth, not income, and you'll see people liek the Kennedys scream. They pay no income tax; their wealth is locked up forever. Or at least until enough of their little rapist-drug addict nephews spend them into the poorhouse.

The point that you seem to miss is that I don't like other people's hands in my pocket. I believe in helping people, as others have helped me, but I would like to do it on my own terms. I believe in less government not more. That happens to fall under either Libertarian or Conservative. I believe in teach a man to fish not give him a fish, also not a Liberal ideal. Handouts are never going to solve anyones problem and it creates more government dependence. That's it, nothing more, nothing less. As far as judging, well, I have great repect and love for a whole lot of people on this blog regardless of their party affiliation. Most of them are kind and intelligent. I just don't agree with their politics. I don't judge based on that. I judge (and I'm certainly not perfect and as deserving of judgement as anyone) based on stupidity and ignorance. Your post smacks of ignorance because you work under the assumption that I think I'm perfect and without flaw which I most certainly am not. I am prone to those same human mistakes (insults, judging, anger, etc.) as anyone else and would never claim to be better than you. I work on my issues and that's what counts.

Sen X: Y'all must admit you screwed up the economy.

G Sachs: We were only trying to keep up with you guys.

Sen Y: How does it feel to know that millions have lost their homes.

G Sachs: I can't undertand their pain as I own an island in the South Pacific.

Sen Z: Explain to me why we shouldn't put your azz in jail?

G Sach: 'Cuz you'd lose a major campaign contributor.

Sen X: You think you're so smart, you rich bastard.

G Sach: Actually I think I'm a rich bastard who's smart.

Sen Z: Do you have a final word for the American people who've you've exploited?

G Sach: Yes--since I own your azz, you'd better make sure you you go to work before the sun comes up.

'Cuz as of daybreak, I'll own that, too.

Start taxing wealth, not income, and you'll see people liek the Kennedys scream. They pay no income tax; their wealth is locked up forever. Or at least until enough of their little rapist-drug addict nephews spend them into the poorhouse.

Posted by: MrChili

Ted Kennedy, and MOST of the Kennedys could have made ten times as much money in the private sector than they did working for the people of Massachusetts and the USA.

So take your specious argument and stick it up your talking points.

And again, in the true Right Wing Christian spirit of love and forgiveness, do the same with your gratuitous cheap shot at his relatives. Do you M*sturbate to the suffering of young addicts? I think it's a perversion we can add to the vast array of right wing peccadolloes that've entertained the country the last few years.

If you want to spew your righteous anger at Rich People who take advantage of tax laws, start with the familoy that owns Wallmart. There's about a dozen of them who are worth--or who annually make, I forget--about 14 BILLION a year each, while their employees get denied health care.

I'm enough of a capitalist to not get upset if they, say, kept a half a BILLION each to scrape by...but 14 BILLION is obscene.

Those are your people, along with the Bernie Madoffs and the Goldman Sachs and the rest of the scurrulous slime that keep the hard working people in this country struggling.

Perhaps the fine, well-intentioned football reporters for the WaPo will do a little research and let us know just how many coaches actually qualified for a pension.

Or even how the system works for coaches.

Or even if the policy change reflects the constant coaching changes the franchise endured from 1999 to 2009.

So yes we have Shanihan but we have gained less than two of the three teams that finished ahead of us. Plus new coaches = a year of adjustment, 3-4, new offensive schemes, etc.

So my question is -is anyone here really pitching the idea of winning the division? I think 8-8 is a great goal.

"I agree. I really like him (R Williams). I met him a while ago while he was playing baseball with an ex girlfriends brother. Really nice guy."

He's an older back who still has a great burst to daylight.

He also follows his blocking well.

And the irony is, he has had a drug addiction, but has been healthier, and better conditioned than some of the allegedly 'livin' clean' types in the league.

I wonder how he and R Brown will co-exist now that the fins have B Marshall inthe house: there's only one football to go around.

Again: if he become availiable, I think a number of teams would kick the tires.

He may be older but he was out of football for a few years and had the rare opportunity to do some real introspection. He's go a pretty healthy lifestyle now and still runs like a truck. Mami won't let him go though.

The Dallas Cowboys will win the NFC East next year.

Deal with it.

I'd like to see the skins in the Wild Card hunt come late November is all.

I see the team being a serious threat 2011, not 2010.

For right now, Jerrah Jones' Gang of Star-helmeted Homos are the fav to win the East.

Deal with it, homie.

It's crazy how his perception in Miami has gone from superhero to public enemy #1. Then only 5 years later, it does a 180 yet again. Personally love the dude, if you didn't check out the 30 for 30 Run Ricky Run at 8:00, it's coming back on at 11 PM on ESPN2. It's a must watch, really enlightening and well produced.

Its foolish for anyone to rank drafts at this point we wont know for a few years how it worked out. I dont believe any of the guys drafted will be able to make a huge impact, that includes Williams. Hopefully he will be able to hold his own. We are still a very mediocre team in a strong division. 8-8 would be very good, the playoffs would be epic. Im not holding my breath for either.

Agreed King Joffe. Foolish to rank drafts, but you would rather have everyone saying you had a blowout draft vs. a crappy one as they said in 08 and 09 (and to their credit, proved to be OK, although maybe that was just too obvious).

One thing I find bizarre is that the historical 'rankings' of drafts are on who got things 'right' - e.g.., did Kiper or McShay or whoever correctly predict the draft. The better question is: whose draft boards were most accurate 5 years later, not 10 minutes after the draft is done - e.g., did the players that they ponied up work out.

Accuracy vs. precision, or something like that.

'Memba when he came out of Texas?

Mike Ditka blew his draft wad on one guy who later showed up with him on the cover of a magazine in a wedding dress.

A black football player marrying his uptight white coach.

No wonder the relationship didn't last.

They could figure out who was going to be the tight end.

If you don't think Shanahan want's to win the division, then you don't know his resolves. Remember Shanahan brought the reputation of his son Kyle on the line with his. Anything short of 9 or 10 wins will be unacceptable. McNabb is here, Haynesworth is more excited than most think, Portis and Co. knows the end is near and they must perform. This year will be a more competitive year than most are prepared to believe. Coach Shanahan is not a rookie coach!

tis the norm to have people make snap judgments over things that don't really deserve snap judgments.

Me? I just try to look at the odds. 5th round draft picks aren't likely to become difference makers -- and half of them have very short or no careers. Its a longshot to get a difference maker. So if you can get a decent pro for a 5th round pick that solves a real problem for your team, the odds are in your favor.

So we drafted an LB in the 4th and a KR in the 7th. Could we have turned those draft slots into 2 of the 3 of Kirk Morrison, Ted Ginn and ernie sims? All 3 of those guys went for 5th round picks, all 3 have something this team needs.

Can't critique the people that got picked, don't know anything about them. It may work out well, and I liked that Shanahan tried to address need issues with the late picks. But I can look up the odds ... this year was a good year to trade picks for vets.

Its not a slogan.

Men of teal. Shark Tank. Tank, those are some of the nicknames. Many years ago, when the franchise was young, Arturs Irbe was asked what he wanted from the fans for the playoffs. His response ... "wear teal"

The thing you'll hear most Sharks fans saying is, "I wonder how they're gonna choke this time". Colorado had 2 fluke game winners. Though their goalie getting a 53 save shutout wasn't a fluke ... Caps fans are digesting what it means to get 50+ shots and lose.

Owen Thomas, a University of Pennsylvania football captain whose body was found Monday, committed suicide at his off-campus residence, his mother tells the Daily Pennsylvanian.

The junior's mother, Rev. Katherine Brearsley, tells the newspaper her son hanged himself. "He put huge expectations on himself and just impossibly couldn't live up to them... and wouldn't let other people give him an appropriate perspective," she said.

Here is another undrafted fa that signed with the Skins:

Raymond signs with Redskins

By NSU Media Services

Northeastern State defensive tackle T.J. Raymond signed a free agent contract with the Washington Redskins during the free agency period following the NFL draft.

Raymond, who is 6-foot-3 and 315 pounds, said he was first contacted by the New York Jets on Saturday, but then was contacted by the Redskins with a better offer on Sunday morning.

“That's when everything changed, Sunday morning when the Redskins called,” said Raymond, a Grand Prairie, Texas, native. “I was all set to go with the Jets, but Washington made me a better offer. I was excited when they called. I was just thankful to God for what everything that has happened.

“This is a dream come true for me.”

A criminal justice major, Raymond admitted, “Law enforcement is my first love and a lot of people don't know that. But signing with the Redskins is a dream come true.”

The RiverHawks big defensive tackle will leave for the Redskins camp on May 6th.

“I'm looking forward to it,” he said. “I've been busting my butt getting ready.”

During his senior season in 2009 Raymond was a Lone Star Conference North Division first team selection with 54 tackles, three sacks and three forced fumbles.

A highly touted recruit out of high school, Raymond spent one season at the University of North Texas before landing at Northeastern State, where he earned Lone Star Conference first team accolades in 2008. He was fourth on the team in tackles with 62, 13 for loss and five for quarterback sacks.

Raymond was an All-Lone Star Conference North Division second team selection in 2007, when he collected 50 tackles, eight tackles for loss, two sacks, one fumble recovery and one forced fumble.
