Redskins come through with a 27-17 win

Behind an offense that finally broke the 17-point ceiling and thanks to a defense that came up with a key turnover, the Washington Redskins snapped a four-game losing streak to down the Denver Broncos 27-17 on Sunday afternoon.

The fourth quarter opened with the Redskins driving, and on the first play Jason Campbell hit Malcom Kelly for an 18-yard gain. Ladell Betts followed with a strong 18-yard run, and two Rock Cartwright carries moved the ball to the Denver 15-yard line.

That's where the drive stalled, however, as the Redskins were able to move only three more yards and Shaun Suisham hit a 30-yard field goal to tie the game at 17.

Denver took over on its own 40-yard line after Suisham hit another kickoff out of bounds, but on first down from the Redskins 46-yard line, Chris Simms went deep to the end zone and was picked off by DeAngelo Hall. Hall returned the ball and pitched it to LaRon Landry to move the Redskins to the 40-yard line, and Washington took over with momentum and a chance to take the lead.

For once, the Redskins offense responded.

After being sacked on the first play, the Redskins leaned on the run to move the ball. Betts carried for 11 yards on second-and-12 and Cartwright picked up the first down on the next carry. An eight-yard pass to Antwaan Randle El picked up another first down two plays later, and on third-and-3 the Redskins got a huge play from second-year receiver Devin Thomas, who took a short pass and made four would-be tacklers miss en route to a 27-yard gain to the Denver five-yard line.

Betts carried on the next three plays, reaching out and getting the ball into the end zone on third and goal from the one-yard line to give the Redskins a 24-17 lead. It was the first time Washington reached the 20-point mark this season and the first time in 11 home games the Redskins scored at least 20 points.

Four straight incompletions on Denver's next drive gave the Redskins the ball on the 27-yard line and Shaun Suisham kicked a 35-yard field goal with 1:10 left to extend the lead to 27-17.

Prescient post of the day:

Wish today could be like some of the fun football movies, where the team just rallies from within themselves, in spite of the coaching, in spite of all the odds. Don't care if it's last-second field goal or trickery or something one-of-a-kind. We need a victory. And then we need to celebrate a little bit, and then get back to work -- not say, ah, see, the gods/fates/refs are finally on our side.

This season has been its own version of "Marat/Sade," so why not some "Leatherheads" or "Longest Yard" or "Bad News Bears"?

Hail Hogs!

curzon 417: so what if jc threw 3 or 4 bad passes today. so did both bronco qb's. and two of jason's 'overthrows' actually hit receivers in the HANDS! don't THEY get paid, too? the thing is ALL qb's miss opportunities; some close, some not close. we WON. and it wasn't no accident.

Posted by: dcjazzman | November 15, 2009 4:13 PM

so what? JC always misses wide open receivers down field. dude has now accuracy on medium and long throws and always pats his stats with the little short dump offs. IMO, JC did little to help win this game.

I got to see the 2nd half.. It was nice to see the team play solidly for once. If only they played that way all year, they'd have 2 losses max.. philly game would go either way..

they still got a LOT of work to do, but that was a good confidence boost to the team

And this changes NOTHING; $nyder and Vinny are still incompetents who must relinquish control of the personnel and coaching decisions of this organization.

Couple of thoughts.

1. Why hasn't Rino been in earlier? I think this talk of bust is mis-placed. He's obviously better than Will Montgomery. He took care of his business. He should have been the starter, consecutively, since Thomas went down.

2. Why wasn't Levi Jones signed during the pre-season? Seems like we could have used him for the last 4 weeks (and before).

3. Time to bench Portis. All Portis defenders, you have to admit that he's being outplayed by Betts & Cartwright. Period. There just isn't any debate. Portis is done. 3rd String. Shoot, 4th string, I'd rather see more Ganther.

4. DT and MK looked like they might be coming along. Finally.

5. We can't do anything this year. But the last 6 quarters makes me think that maybe we aren't the long term rebuilding project that I thought we were. We need a LT, RT and RB to be competitive next year. We should be able to get that done in the off-season between FA and the draft.

6. 1-3 is yet another indictment of Zorn. I'm no defender of Snyderatto. But this team is better than our record. Obviously not a playoff team. But not the joke we've been so far.

A win is GREAT!! I love having a Sunday afternoone where I actually feel happy and not despondent and angry.

But the Skins have a losing season unless some kind of freakish miracle occurs. We've had one decent game this one out of 9 games. Realistically I'm guessing we may have 2-3 more like this and we'll lose 1-2 of them. . . this based on how we've played for last 17 games.

So if Snyder doesn't do major re-evaluation and realize his way doesn't work and that we need real football people in charge of the organization from top to bottom then he is not just stubborn and obtuse he is a fool.

Okay with all that said HAIL HAIL HAIL

Way to go Redskins.

Clinton Portis? Santana Moss?

Love that we are finally playing players - and if it is taking injuries to force the play of the younger guys, this is great.

Love it - Redskins were going to run the ball and shove it down the throats of the Denver players and the Denver players couldn't stop it.

Guys who practice with the offensive line play better than those who sit in the owner's office blowing smoke up the owner's keister.

Way to go Betts and Rock! I love watching ya'll play - making yards - playing tough - blocking!

Way to go sellers and Hunter the Punter!

First time the Redskins have played like a pro team in 2 years - whoever is calling the plays needs to now send the ex-play callers to bingo to teach them how to call a game!

At least now Dallas week has some meaning. Before this game the Dallas game looked like a slaughter. At least now we have a chance cause we found some combinations who play hard and want to win.

The Broncos are this years Redkins, great start crappy finish. Big whoop we beat a team with an inflated record that lost there starting QB. If Orton is healthy he torches the Skins. Now to bring everyone down to Earth the Cowboys will smoke the Skins. Mark my words with every win we screw out draft position and lessen the chance that Cerrato and Zorn are replaced. So cheer all you want for a terrible win against a QB that hadn't thrown a pass in 3 season. The Redskins didn't beat the Broncos, the Broncos beat themselves. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it.

Posted by: rickyroge | November 15, 2009

The Bengals 1st round pick starting left tackle up until this year. He's know to be good when he's on but had a lot of injury problems ... Marvin Lewis felt he was holding up his end so he let him go.

He could have been rusty ala Mike Williams also a former 1st round draft pick left tackle. Guess he was serious when he said he was in shape and ready to go.

Yes, he is definitely a keeper at the very least at right tackle (they still need to draft one or two more) as BMW looks to end up as a guard and Heyer is really just not starting material. A decent backup swingman ...

your post has nothing to do with my original post on JC. JC cannot throw to wide open WR down the field. most short and medium passes are usually also off target to the point where the YACs are hard to get because the receiver (wr, te or rb) loses momentum to adjust to the catch.

say what you want, but JC is not an accurate passer. And we are not even talking about his lack of vision or his inability to read the defense.

ricky..
I think most of the bloggers here see much more of the Front Office short comings then just who they placed on the field (players or coaches).
The issue is also the complete lack of integrity and decency from Snyder (ie. the Front Office), such as suing fans for tickets (that had already resold to a ticket agency), taking signs out of fans hands at the gates, bait and switching ticket sales tactics..I could go on but, you probably know the history..
So, its not just who coaches or plays that continues the hate for Snyder... And one win wont change that either.
So you can enjoy the win and hate the Front Office.. Essentially rooting for a Brand/logo (Redskins) that was once owned by good decent people, years ago.

...(then it's) The Redskins got a huge play (not MADE...got...) when Devin Thomas made four would-be tacklers miss en route to a 27 yard gain. (Thomas bashed his way for 27 yards; punishing the "would-be tacklers". The mini-mayor missed the guts and determination of that run.)

Hey Reid we spotted them 14 points and then we beat the crap out of them!

Go cover some other team.

I'm just keeping it real. A victory against a paper dragon is no victory at all. I'm ready for change and with every victory the likelihood that Cerrato blames the bad start on injuries and we prolonging this nightmare for another season. Blow this team up immediately. This game also proves that its time to take Portis out behind the shed and put one between his eyes.

This game seemed like one of those 6 early wins from last year: efficient passing, strong running. Maybe Sherm Lewis is tailoring the play-calling to the strengths of the team. Maybe if the run game keeps working teams will bunch up and open up the deep ball. I don't like today's game making Vinny's decision look good, but the team (Joe Gibbs) "played their guts out," which is all I want to see for the last 7 games. Make the other team beat you, and earn their respect. Maybe 5-11 or 6-10?

Can't say I'm ecstatic about the win. If they string together a couple of wins, then I'll be much happier. I wouldn't give any credit to Cerrato for the signing of Levi though, given the fact that he was pretty much the only available decent OT out there in the first place. He could of been signed much earlier in the season instead of putting the debacle of Mike Williams/Heyer out there. Good news for the Redskins D: Cowboys OT Columbo out of the game with a high ankle sprain. With those kind of injuries, he might be out next week too.
I'd also look for the Skins to feature Moss next week because he always dices up the Boys secondary and he'll be looking to rebound from a subpar performance today.

No Problem Predator!

I JUST WANT TO ENJOY A WIN...SNYDER IS NOT A GOOD OWNER, NOR IS VINNY A GOOD GM but it's good to get a WIN...

ALSO...

The only thing that cures all this bullcrap is WINNING and Snyder needs a lot of wins to get an effective owner!

nice comment rmblocher, but it was Paul Tenorio's post.

Hey Gang...this is gonna sound...well, here's the deal:
Look, I'm happy, excited, that we won. And I don't much care to feel, on a deeper level, the way I do. BUT-I was SORTA hoping we'd LOSE-and continue doing so. Because the wins only serve as band aids to our deeper issue. The owner. And sadly, the crummier we play the better the chances are that somehow, someway Dan sees the "light". I mean, Scrooge did, right? And before we hear about how willing he is to spend money-remember it's OUR money. And reflect on the countless ways Dan has taken advantage of our love for the 'Skins by taking our cash.
Funny-our air and print yakkers call Dan everything BUT a "bad man"!
And then jump Riggo for saying what they've been insinuating for years.Kinda like inciting a riot over someones' views on something-and then deploring the response!
You see, I think Riggo came correct.
Not to say Dan's a murderer or beats his kids...but we seem to have lost the notion of being honorable in your actions and dealings with others...not just SOME others, but ALL others-or as close as you can get. Being a bully because you CAN....now, back in the dark ages when I was raised, if I engaged in behavior of that sort a parent or someone else in authority would have told me I was being a "Bad Boy".
Any whoo, back to my original point. It's hard for me to be really happy with vee's when I know it only prolongs the agony of my cherished teams' being owned by a "bad" guy.And lessens the likelihood of the changes in behavior/actions/attitude that would make this a team that is "winner"- whether they win games or not.An honorable franchise
And I don't want to see Dan sell the team-he'd be just as miserable a human with just as much money and power..able to impact others just as negatively in some other arena.
Ya know, we just LOVE the stories about our athletes who redeem themselves through an embrace of "doing the right thing"....
So, Mr. Snyder....can YOU step up to the plate? Because until you do...well, I'm still a lifelong 'Skins fan, and oh, of course I'll root for victories.....but my heart just ain't in it....
Go Skins.

I said it after the eagles game, and today just confirmed it even more. We're not that far away.

Levi Jones played very well and could be a tackle for us for a couple of years and Heyer can be a capable back up. If they draft a stud left tackle and sign a guard I think they might be fixed there quicker than we thought.

Overall on offense, pretty obvious that the problems were on Zorn, Portis, and Campbell to the least degree but still definitely on JC. Sherm Lewis came out of the bingo hall, has been calling games for 3 weeks and we've scored the most points of the season all three of those weeks. CP goes out all of a sudden against very good defense we can run the ball, and the truth is, if JC was an accurate passer this game wouldn't have been close. Once again just like the Eagles game he left a deep TD to Santanna on the field and also missed at least another 75 yards of passing on the field as well. He is horribly inaccurate, but it is safe to say Zorn, the oline, and Portis were/are much bigger problems.

oh yeah, Laron Landry sucks and should be benched, the problem is he's the least suckiest of our options at safety.

Posted by: zjfr2 | November 15, 2009 5:22 PM | Report abuse

That said though, we're not that far away because of money spent and the inherent parity set up of the NFL. Vinny is not smart enough to get us there, if he stays in charge we'll never be good.

Zorn, Campbell, and Cerrato must go!!!!!

Had to listen to Denver news all week talk about how much the Redskins stink and how this should be an easy win. Who stinks now Donkeys?? Well, we do, but we still beat you.

Posted by: COskins | November 15, 2009 5:25 PM | Report abuse

The Redskins biggest needs are across the offensive line before anything else. In my opinion, needs at quarterback and running back and wide receiver and ANYWHERE ELSE is secondary to the lack of quality starters and depth on the line.

Speaking of Tenorio, and lest we forget ... see his comment above.

Williams, Jones, and Heyer at least represent the depth you need on the line ... if Williams really can improve enough to at least play guard. Then, in only ONE DRAFT, you can fix the offensive line. But you still have to pick someone like Okung with the 1st. You can't avoid it. Hopefully, this is a sign that Rinehart is coming around. He, along with Dockery at guard could at least shore up starting in the middle. But I wouldn't bet on it ... still depth is depth.

Yeah, they will need a new QB, but not through the draft, not waiting 3 years for him to develop. They need to find out about Colt and maybe sign David Carr if he will come for a shot at the starter's position. They need to avoid making a potential catastrophic mistake in attempting to draft a franchise quarterback. And with this owner a mistake in that area is far more likely than a lucky strike. Campbell was Gibb's choice for quarterback. There really isn't a better judge of quarterbacks than Gibbs. Look at how many he used to get into the playoffs and superbowls. Snyderato definitely do not have what it takes to develop a newly drafted quarterback.

BINGO!!

I like the mix and balance of S.Lewis's playcalling, he calls plays WAY better than JZ.

It's only one game but Levi Jones looked good, and I thought Rhino played good(esp.run blocking) even when he played earlier.

D.Thomas and M.Kelly made plays.

Ladell Betts was a beast and I admit I've been critical of him in the past but last week and this week he's proven me wrong.(Clinton Portis stick a fork in him, he's done)Betts ran hard, decisive, and with a lot of burst and got up the field in a hurry, things CP can't do anymore. Cartwright was effective also.

Don't let ARE get back there for punts anymore.

C.Rodgers can't cover the tip at a Dennys, he bites on any move.

Levi Jones played great, hope he can be consistent.

JC is still innaccuarate on deep throws(the one to Moss was a TD) and just misses too many open receivers.

The defense stepped up after the 2 big first half plays, hats of to Big Albert for coming back after getting hurt, Orakpo, McIntosh, Carter,Doughty, and even Hall made plays.

This should be a confidence booster, this team can play when they rise to the occasion. Let's get ready to knock the snot out of the Cowb itches!! HAIL, REDSKINS!!!

You see, I think Riggo came correct.

Yes, he was. Snyder can be extremely vindictive, spiteful to an extreme. Only Al Davis might beat him there ... destroying Marcus Allen's career comes to mind. But at least Davis knew something about football and had coached at the pro level with the Chargers and Raiders. Snyder is not qualified to be waterboy.

Posted by: periculum | November 15, 2009 5:33 PM | Report abuse

so seeing how athletic/fast DT is, it is an INDICTMENT of the coaching staff that it has taken up till now to get him the BALL with only the slightest regularity...MK got thrown the ball and did something with it...Davis got thrown the ball and did something with it...CRhino played well...I mean, shame on zorn for not having a clue, for not having the slightest idea...

Glad they won, but come on, this should have been going on since opening day...

Go finish your math homework.

Posted by: BrooklynSkins | November 15, 2009 5:40 PM | Report abuse

Good win for the skins. They played poorly again to start the game, but they hung in until the end. In all the offense continues to improve, again showing that Sherm Lewis is a good play caller regardless of J Reid's opinion. Also, glad Carlos got benched after the first TD. Hopefully he'll learn to play in technique and not bite on double moves so much.

Nevertheless, this could be signs of improvement in the coaching staff ... and keep in mind as Tenorio reminded everyone ... Portis it the highest paid running back in the NFL, the highest paid in history. And apparently in the owner's crew. The owner will not be happy replacing him ... sending him to the bench when he isn't productive ... ah ...
Think about it, beantown, would all of this had happened were it not for Portis injury? We've already seen that Fred Davis could be productive. Isn't it interesting that suddenly, with Betts and Cartwright playing, and reasonable improvements on the OL with Jones, that suddenly guys are coming out of the woodwork to make plays? And the coaching suddenly looks like its improving as well? It sure looks political to me.

the old double move, you just can't teach how to guard against that....haha, I mean, zero progress by that can since being drafted, still can't catch balls, still bites on the dreaded double move...bust...

Great game for betts/rock...again, too bad they weren't getting carries on a more regular basis...I hope portis takes about 7 more weeks off....just to be safe..

I don't think Synder has been a great owner but I have to call foul on this type of BS. How do you know Synder is vindictive? Has he ever done anything personally to you? And yes I know about the ticket issue, but there is no definitive proof that he was directly involved or even if he was that he did it purposefully out of spite. It just may have been poor business practices.

If today proved anything it proved you don't need a $100 million dollar back to be productive. Fire Zorn and Vinny, sign a high quality GM and let him pick the coach. Tender JC at the lowest if someone signs him fine! Draft a LT first round and Tony Pike (very impressive Friday night btw) in the second round, get a young back in the 4th, and get youth on the oline late. Sign a guard, a strong side linebacker, and a free safety in the offseason. Bingo!!!! your solid again!!!!

the offensive/point production the last 3 weeks has proven just how bad Zorn and Portis we're killing this team....

Rock had a good game as a RB, but I just don't get why DT is not the primary KR. He can be a play maker when he gets the ball and should be given a chance to do so on kick offs.

Kahlua87...

Now I will proceed to open a can of "whup-azz"

I am not a homer...I am a lifelong fan who bleeds burgundy and gold. Because I don't sit around and call the owner names and wish him dead like some of you other sick fuks doesn't make me less frustrated.

You are a coward bit*h! I've played football and know that the PLAYERS get paid too and have to catch, block and tackle.

One win doesn't change the fact that this team needs big changes, BUT IT'S A WIN FOR THE ENTIRE ORGANIZATION...TODAY... YOU CAN'T PRAISE THE PLAYERS AND BASH THE FO WHEN THEY WIN...

This team is 3 and 6...a losing record and EVERYBODY IN THE ORGANIZATION is to blame.

Dikhead!!!!

Is that the best you can do?? You don't call THAT 'whup-azz' son, you call that 'whimp azz'.

You played football? That exposes just how lame you are. So I guess you think playing with your sac make you Doctor too. It DOESN'T; It just means you've got your hand in your pants.

See, guys like you are the security guards that act like real Cops, the guy who really believes he knows more than he ACTUALLY does. You're a Homer because you demand NO accountability; you just hope and pray and wish that the Danny will finally reward your fandom by doing 'the right thing'.

But clearly, in $nyder's warped mind, the right thing has been to squeeze every dime outta the Brand while forsaking all the fans, including the zealot losers like you.

So keep clicking your heels Dorothy...Cause there's no place like 'Homer'
