Redskins cut Batiste, sign Gatewood (updated)

The Redskins have cut offensive lineman D'Anthony Batiste and signed linebacker Curtis Gatewood from Pittsburgh's practice squad, the team announced. Gatewood was on the Redskins' practice squad last year.

Portis on Tiger

He isn't quite a life coach, but Clinton Portis offered his take on Tiger Woods today on the "John Thompson Show" on ESPN 980. Dan "Marconi" Steinberg tuned in.

Interesting pick up. He's another college DE making the convert to LB. Maybe the success the team has had w/ Orakpo and Wilson may have given the team the inkling to give this guy another try.

Yeah, the guy sucks. He's good for a couple penalties and false starts a game. Talent wise he's not bad but he'd a head case. If it was a tackle that got released that had some head issues we'd have to jump on it.

Richie Incognito Released by Rams by DAN BARKS

According to a report from 101.1 ESPN Radio in St. Louis, the Rams have finally released OG Richie Incognito.

The former third round pick of the Rams had proven over the last five seasons that he has no clue what his last name means.

Incognito has talent but no restraint, which would constantly be a sideline issue for the coaching staff and hinder an already nonexistent offense with useless penalties.

Offensive linemen with a mean streak are a coveted thing in the NFL, but Incognito took it too far on many occasions. If you ever wanted someone on your side in a bar fight, he's your man, but with no self-control, this move had to be made and finally was.

There will be some mixed emotions in the locker room, as he was liked for his protective nature on the field, but for the long-term success of this team it was sorely needed.

Mark Setterstrom will be filling the hole made by the cut, which isn't in my opinion a step back since Setterstrom has been filling that hole on a regular basis this season. Coach Steve Spagnuolo liked the fire that Incognito brought to the team and did give him a fair chance or three since taking over this season.

The move benefits Spagnuolo on both fronts since he tried initially to help get Incognito under control and then finally made the correct decision in releasing a problem player with a track record for being injured or in trouble with games still remaining on the schedule.

A perfect fit for Incognito to land would be the Oakland Raiders. He would fit the nasty nature cultivated in Oakland, and Al Davis is still alive. I wouldn't be surprised to see them scoop him up in the next 48 hours.

From profootballtalk.com:

The St. Louis Rams have released guard Richie Incognito, two days after he received a pair of personal fouls and got into a verbal confrontation with coach Steve Spagnuolo on the sideline during the Rams' loss to the Tennessee Titans.

"As with all other personnel moves, this is what we felt was in the best interest of the team at this time," Spagnuolo said in a statement released by the team. "We appreciate Richie's efforts and we wish him the very best."

Incognito twice head butted Titans players during Sunday's game, the latest in a long line of incidents in which Incognito failed to control his temper.

Incognito has spent his entire five-year career with the Rams. St. Louis drafted him in the third round of the 2005 NFL draft.

Well GATEWOOD better have improved from what I saw last year A TON if he's the next coming of KEITH BULLOCK. And that's the type of Strong-side presence we need right not.

BATISTE - who's he, but don't dog my boy WIL MONTGOMERY. He may be too small to play in the NFL, but he's got game as a back-up center.

Reclaimation projects are always a good thing, even when they don't work out!

Posted by: 4thFloor | December 15, 2009 4:31 PM | Report abuse

There are pieces to this team we can build around. I am optimistic about next year. Our main needs are (in no order):

1.) Sign a free safety (dawan landry) and move LL to SS..landry brothers safety combo

2.) resign Carlos and Sign veteran 3rd corner that can tackle (Ken Lucas)

3.) Move Orakpo to DE full time.. what do you do about outside LB though?
You can build around this defense the way it is now...just add this little parts to it.

On offense:
1.) resign JC17 or place a high tender on him.
2.) Draft an OT in first round.. Okung from OK State.
3.) Resign Levi Jones and move him to RT. Just use him for another year until we take another OT next year
4.) In Round 2 do you take a Guard? or do you take a Speedy RB? I say take best available player at either position.
This line obviously needs to be built through the draft..

One big question I have been asking myself is: With the production of Fred Davis and the obvious talent he has do we trade Cooley for a second and third round pick to help build our line? I am really struggling with that one.. what do you guys think?
If we did trade him for that offer we would have 2 2nd round picks and a 3rd..then you can take a guard and rb in round 2 and maybe a LB in round 3

Posted by: jeffco01 | December 15, 2009 2:49 PM | Report abuse

I think this about sums it up as well as I could. I've also been debating whether you trade Cooley for a 2nd...I think you do- as much as I love him that is good value for a guy that will be 28 next year coming off a major injury. It's a win-win, either you have great depth and he can teach Fred, or you pick up a 2nd round pick.

More importantly are what we do with JC and our 1st rounder. Totally agree that you resign/tender him a high offer so worst case we get a 1st rd pick for him, and take Okung, assuming he's available. Not sure he will be if we keep playing like this. Kinda hope we lose to NYG and SD...but I can never root for a loss agianst Dallas

The Cowboys kicker competition is on
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on December 15, 2009 4:10 PM ET
Fans of training camp competitions between kickers are in for a December treat.

In one corner, Cowboys incumbent Nick Folk will try to get his job after missing six out of his last nine kicks.

In the other corner, Cowboys rookie kickoff specialist David Buehler will try to take Folk's job. Buehler oddly hasn't been kicking a lot of field goals in practice until now, but he's fired up.

"I thrive off competition, that's what I'm looking forward to most,'' Buehler said Tuesday. "Nick is a great field goal kicker. I look up to him, I've learned a lot from him mentally and physically about kicking. He's a mentor of mine."

The first round of the battle went to Folk, although he only hit two of four field goals in cold, windy conditions Tuesday. Buehler hit one.

The Cowboys seem hesitant to release Folk, who made the Pro Bowl as a rookie in 2007. It's possible he could be inactive for Saturday's game in New Orleans without getting released

I'm not upset with the Orakpo pick (though I wasn't crazy about it at the time).

As Oher was falling during the draft, I was hoping that we'd make a move to get him.

Well, he still could be a left tackle in the NFL.

They've put him there several times throughout the year when Gaither's been injured. Ogden has said he thinks the Ravens should eventually flip-flop the tackles (move Oher left and Gaither right).

He's sure as heck owning the right side of that line.

NFL.com has a set of Oline stats and when you look at what Ravens do over that right side it's pretty freakin impressive...especially since he's a rookie.

From the unpredictable john Corcoran on NFL Draft Dog

"By the end of this column you‘ll learn why the Redskins have gotten so much better, why Coach Jim Zorn should be retained, and why it may not matter if Vinny Cerrato leaves or stays. Say what? Got your attention now, right kids?..."

It's incognito and he a center, not a guard.

do people seriously believe that a team would give up a first round pick for Cooley? why?

TE is one position that you can find gems in late rounds of the draft and maybe we have one already in Robert Agnone so I'm all for trading Cooley if the value is right, but is it me or is Todd Yoder a better blocker than Mike Sellers?? Agnone has good size and speed for a his size, and he was a go-to target for Joe Flacco when they played together in college. Anyone heard that we're likely to target Sam Bradford in the draft? We should go OT(Okung or Trent Willams 1st rd pick, or either go CJ Spiller 1st rd and take a OT like Anthony Davis or Byran Buluga of Iowa in the 2nd rd, hopefully with the Cooley pick go OG or best defensive player on the board with that pick... Think of the LL30 and Earl Thomas safety duo or adding Sergio Kindle to play strong side linebacker and Orakpo play DE full time.

Yet another DUMB-ASS MOVE by Vinny! Of course we need LB's more than OL's, WHAT A RETARD! Danny, PLEASE TAKE THE KEYS AWAY FROM THIS IDIOT BEFORE HE DOES ANYMORE HARM!!!!!

I really can't believe all of the CRAZY TALK about trading Chris Cooley, it just makes me discount the football intelligence of some in these forums! Sure Fred Davis is having a decent year after not having a clue his freshman year, but he in no way compares to Cooley..not even in his Tiger Woods wet dreams!!!

Speaking of Tiger; he wouldn't have this problem if he had the balls to handle just one King girl instead of 14 Cosmo girls!
