Redskins Cut Giants' Lead to 7

After some worrisome play by the defense in the first half, the Redskins could take something away from the third quarter when the unit they hoped would provide more big plays set up a score.

LaRon Landry made a diving deflection on an Eli Manning pass with about three minutes left in the third quarter, and DeAngelo Hall grabbed the pick out of the air and returned it to the Giants' 11-yard line.

Washington moved just two yards in four plays and settled for a field goal, but they still got something out of it.

The Redskins opened the half hoping to capitalize on the momentum of the fake field
goal and drove to the Giants 43-yard line before stalling and punting. The defense forced a four-and-out on New York's next drive, but Washington again failed to put together a drive on its next possession.

Hall's interception set up Shaun Suisham's field goal, and the Redskins went into the final quarter trailing by just a touchdown.

tick, tick, tick...

need a stop here, D

Posted by: mohammed10 | September 13, 2009 6:32 PM | Report abuse

Right now it's about making the game respectable.

Posted by: jiacinto | September 13, 2009 6:33 PM | Report abuse

Need the defense to make a stop here. The two TOs today are nice, but can they step up when they need to?

Posted by: CDon | September 13, 2009 6:33 PM | Report abuse

They need to on this upcoming play.

Posted by: jiacinto | September 13, 2009 6:34 PM | Report abuse

Well, Troy, it looks like Nicks is out of the mix. Heh heh.

Posted by: RomoLongballs | September 13, 2009 6:34 PM | Report abuse

So how will the Redskins lose to the Rams next week?

Posted by: jiacinto | September 13, 2009 6:35 PM | Report abuse

Eli has not been stellar.

But JC--jeez, he's MUCH worse than last year. All the off-season stuff clearly has hammered him.

And JZ has called a game that shouts "I don't trust my QB."

Nevertheless, gotta man up, JC.

Posted by: farstriker | September 13, 2009 6:35 PM | Report abuse

Landry is trying to hard to take someone's head off instead of wrapping them up

Posted by: MPNangle | September 13, 2009 6:35 PM | Report abuse

Snyder saw what we are seeing now...JC can't play and we crticized when he tried to get a new QB.

Snyder don't sell the team!

Posted by: rickyroge | September 13, 2009 6:32 PM

A vocal minority of us saw this before "now."

Posted by: learnedhand1 | September 13, 2009 6:35 PM | Report abuse

Rache.. close your eyes and keep saying
"2010, 2010, 2010.." .. Snyder has stockpiled his Offensive dollars for an uncapped 2010.. No extensions, no long term signings... No traded Draft picks.. (all intact..no cap on Draft picks either)..

Redskins Park next March will have cash flowing like Dubai Saudi Arabia.. There will be a dedicated runway at Dulles just to handle the volume of Redskins Free Agent prospects visiting the richest franchise in the NFL....
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I've seen enough of JC and my decision is- he CANNOT get it done. He just cannot make plays. This is the same crap as last year. We're that close and we settle for a freaking FG. WHY CAN'T WE SCORE TOUCHDOWNS????????????? SO FRUSTRATING. WE GET A INT AND SETTLE FOR FG. I'M SO MAD.

Posted by: ga8085 | September 13, 2009 6:36 PM | Report abuse

I guess the answer to my previous question is no, the defense can't step up and make a play when they need to.

Posted by: CDon | September 13, 2009 6:36 PM | Report abuse

Now they give them a free first down.

Posted by: jiacinto | September 13, 2009 6:36 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: SkinsfaninKaneohe | September 13, 2009 6:37 PM | Report abuse

20-10. Can they at least lose 20-17 or 20-13 to make it respectable? The answer, though, is probably no.

Posted by: rickyroge | September 13, 2009 6:32 PM

It's so much that Snyder was looking. It was how Snyder handled the whole affair that was so egregious.

Defense needed a stop there and didn't get it. A two-score game makes this thing out of reach, I think.

Posted by: CDon | September 13, 2009 6:38 PM | Report abuse

We are actually still in this game...

UNBELIEVABLE!!!

Posted by: rickyroge | September 13, 2009 6:40 PM | Report abuse

Well atleast now Zorn will pass the ball on first and second down down two scores. Or will he?

Posted by: ga8085 | September 13, 2009 6:40 PM | Report abuse

And once again it's not a one possession game. If we win, it'd be a miracle.

So this is what I take from today's debacle: The defense is not as good as we all thought it would be. People talking about "Ravens defense good"... yeah right.. the secondary is giving up too much cushion and they cannot tackle. We still have no pressure...

Offense is still the same as last year. Unable to score TD, JC is the same old JC... He sucks. I thought we were supposed to see progress, but JC looks like he did his first year.

Posted by: rachel216 | September 13, 2009 6:40 PM | Report abuse

Can we PLEASE throw the ball down field?

Posted by: rickyroge | September 13, 2009 6:41 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: jiacinto | September 13, 2009 6:41 PM | Report abuse

Yet another run, DUH.

Posted by: JesusFreakKaren | September 13, 2009 6:41 PM | Report abuse

Did Devin Thomas just want to run into someone? Otherwise, why turn that thing back up the field there?

And yes, Zorn obviously doesn't trust Campbell. Skins are down two scores and the first play is a reverse that goes no where.

Posted by: CDon | September 13, 2009 6:41 PM | Report abuse

Do we EVER throw beyond the the first down marker??

Posted by: ga8085 | September 13, 2009 6:43 PM | Report abuse

That was probably the game. The running backs will eat up the clock now on this drive. The WAS defense is tired. Unless there is a turnover or some stupid mistake the fat lady can go out onto midfield during the break and sing her beautiful Redskins again suck concerto.

Posted by: jiacinto | September 13, 2009 6:43 PM | Report abuse

Campbell has looked bad today. Zorn has looked bad today. Same start as last year.

Posted by: will_ga | September 13, 2009 6:44 PM | Report abuse

Alright! Down by 10, we just need a fake punt and an interception return to win, if our offense can keep from scoring for the giants. we have a much better chance to score now that our offense has gotten off the field.

Posted by: james808d | September 13, 2009 6:44 PM | Report abuse

3 and out!!!! I cannot take this any longer. we are terrible.

All I have to say is: Thanks, Jason Campbell, for proving me right!! I knew you could never get it done, and now you are just confirming that. It's nice to know I was right all along.

Why is Zorn so against moving the pocket, even just a little bit? Okay, Campbell's not the most mobile, but he CAN move to his right a little, can't he? Isn't an even slightly moving target harder to hit?

Posted by: jiacinto | September 13, 2009 6:44 PM | Report abuse

JZ may not trust JC, but if he cannot tell that the Skins cannot run against the ginas, then he deserves to be fired. the ginas are weak in the secondary and he is still trying to run the ball.

He Scuks big time! D is keeping us in this game!

Posted by: Curzon417 | September 13, 2009 6:45 PM | Report abuse

I know we're not supposed to panic, and I'm no coach or GM, but I have lost confidence in JC. It's not the O-line...It's JC and JZ's playcalling. If I'm Snyder, I'm pissed and I don't blame him.

WE should have tried harder to get Sanchez or Cutler.

Posted by: rickyroge | September 13, 2009 6:45 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: james808d | September 13, 2009 6:47 PM | Report abuse

I don't know why I thought this year was going to be any different. This is as ugly as I have seen it in years. All I've heard and read was about how the Giants were missing several key members from the defensive backfield ... and yet, there's the Skins, making the NY backups look like all-pros.

I'm soooooooooo tired of this. So bloody tired.

The team is mediocre and a lot needs to be done. Unfortunately the organizational structure and leadership capacity is just not there. Until Vinny Cerrato quits or Snyder fires him the team will continue to be mediocre.

This loss today is also the result of not having a good offensive line. The team failed to draft any linemen. This is the consequence.

The secondary is the weakest link on the team, there's no question about that. Campbell is NOT the QB of the future. It has nothing to do with lack of protection, it has everything to do with extremely poor decision making.

Posted by: skins21784 | September 13, 2009 6:52 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: rachel216 | September 13, 2009 6:53 PM | Report abuse

Of course Snyder will be blamed and yes it starts at the top, but I apologize to him and Vinny for second guessing their decision to trade Campbell.

Posted by: rickyroge | September 13, 2009 6:53 PM | Report abuse

I don't blame the defense for this loss.

The culprit is once again an offense that can't get in the end zone all day.

And at some point, people need to stop asking who's calling the plays and start asking who is supposed to be EXECUTING the plays.

This team has no QB.

Posted by: MrRedskin21 | September 13, 2009 6:53 PM | Report abuse

It's OK to hurl some criticism at Campbell. It's well deserved. But it's so much more than that. This is an entire team that seems unprepared and, at times, apathetic about the outcome.

It's the poor play calling. It's the inability of the WRs to get open, particularly Moss. It's the offensive line doing well in pass protection but not opening holes in the run game. It's the secondary giving up big plays. It's the interior line getting a decent push but the DEs not taking advantage of one-on-one opportunities. It's the defense as a whole not stepping up and making plays when they're necessary.

So it's OK to hate on JC because he hasn't looked good today. But put the whole thing in perspective and realize there are problems everywhere on this team. Having a better QB might mean an extra TD in this thing, and that would make it more competitive. But it wouldn't fill in all the other holes that are present here today.

Posted by: CDon | September 13, 2009 6:53 PM | Report abuse

The defense has been on the field the whole game sorry if they are a little tired. Some of you need to watch the game. The defense has kept this game from being a blowout. They have played great considering.

Posted by: Flounder21 | September 13, 2009 6:53 PM | Report abuse

The other fact is that the Redskins are the second most profitable team in the NFL. Snyder et al will not make fundamental changes until the revenue stream dries up. As long as the team makes a lot of money and is very profitable, as cynical as this sounds, Snyder could probably care less about winning. If the team goes 1-15 and still sells out the stadium and makes money, why does Snyder care?

Posted by: jiacinto | September 13, 2009 6:53 PM | Report abuse

My god this is the GIANTS at their house? NFC BEAST BALL? Let's see what Detroit does against them. Look at the pasting the Eagles gave to Carolina until McNabb went down. Look at way the Cowboys easily handled TB.

The Giants with arguably the best defensive line in football are at an entirely different level.

I am SICK of this team! Absolutely NOTHING has changed from last year. NOTHING! The play calling is predictable, the defense can't stop anyhone when they need to, and they can't tackle anybody. So...remind me why I should continue rooting?

JC is doing the same thing as last year he will not throw in to coverage his receivers have to be wide open. In this league you have to thread it no one gets wide open all the time.

This team is a carbon copy from last year -and maybe 2 or 3 years before that.

1. No pash rush - I swear we could rush 12 guys and still not get to the QB.

2. Terrible 3rd down defense - you can almost tell even before it happens that the Giants will convert on 3rd.

3. Punch and Judy offense - Jeez, how many Portis off tackle plays can we run? And Zorn obviously has no confidence in either the pass blocking or our wide receivers. And maybe in our QB either.

I have been a Campbell apologist...but no longer.

I would love to have a veteran player or GM tell me, off the record, excatly the problem. I suspect it's mostly JC and partly Zorn.

Posted by: rickyroge | September 13, 2009 7:01 PM | Report abuse

Good, Bad and Ugly:

Good...the surf is jamming and I'm all over it after this debacle ends.

Bad: The whole f'ing team's performance. No consistency, and somebody would screw up at the exact wrong moment.

Ugly: Zorn's playcalling and the offense as a whole execution of the weak ass plays that got called.

Posted by: ocskins | September 13, 2009 7:01 PM | Report abuse

It doesn't make sense placing blame with a few players here and there, without a solid oline, nothing else works - no running, no time to pass; essentially losing the time of possession game which results in the defense spending too much time on the field to be fresh and aggressive. I hope mgmt can learn that someday.

Posted by: HokieSkin | September 13, 2009 7:01 PM | Report abuse

i'm really disappointed by the way the skins played today. I thought with the emergence of 11 and 12 this preseason that there might be some hope this year. I don't see a smidgen of improvement between last year's opener and this game, they are basically identical except now we have an extra "year in the system."

The play calling sucked, the execution sucked. Portis and Randel El looked like they were playing mud compared to the Giants players. The OL's run blocking was non-existent. When the DBs weren't being burned, the LBs were by tight ends and running backs. The only bright spot in this entire game was the fake field goal -- take that out and the redskins offense scored 3 for itself and 7 for the giants.

Looks like its going to be another loooonng year.

JC - I've been trying and trying to stay on this guy's side his whole time as a Redskin. He hasn't gotten any kind of consistent protection, but I just can't help feel that the guy doesn't see the field well. I don't think he has the kind of sixth sense, the imagination, if you will, to see the world in front of him unfolding. I think he is easily confused.

That said, now he comes down the field and throws a TD. Looks good. So why can't he pull it together the rest of the time? What is is his fundamental weakness?

Posted by: fan-o-matic | September 13, 2009 7:03 PM | Report abuse

Before you jump on Campbell, where was Portis near the goal-line? Just continuing last year's end of season debacle? Where's the score dude? You want to play all the time? Put some in from inside the five huh?

Posted by: SkinsfaninKaneohe | September 13, 2009 7:03 PM | Report abuse

They really couldn't have come out any worse. Haynesworth & Hall were both bad signings. Too much money and not that much production. Haynesworth can't stay on the field for two plays in a row. Hall is so overrated. Come on, even the Raiders saw that, and we can't and we give him 55mil?
I know Hall had a INT but with our offense, that means nothing. The only way an INT counts would be to return it for a TD because the offense just cannot score even when you give them the ball at the 10.

I would not at all be suprised if we lose to the Rams. It's just so frustrating
when you have weeks and weeks to prepare for the first game, and you come out so unprepared...

Jim Zorn is not Head Caoch material. When they should have run he pass, hwen they should have pass they run. Clinton Portis Sucks big time, he has no speed. He breaks open and dive to the ground. What exactly was done during training camp and preseason? The 'skins made the most fundamental parts of the game look like they are an average college team. Poor pass blocking, extremely poor tackling, and too many mental mistakes.

Posted by: skins21784 | September 13, 2009 7:11 PM | Report abuse

Difference in the game was the fumble return for a TD. The worst part is that game was so winnable. UGH.

Posted by: hobbes9 | September 13, 2009 7:11 PM | Report abuse

This was a horribly pathetic game in so many dimensions. For the D - horrible tackling and a half a field cushion on every play. For the offense, poor playcalling that never allowed the O to get into any kind of rhythm. In addition to ARE's stupid MFing play in the beginning of the game. He throws that away and we still have a modicum of momentum left from CP's good first run. JC was particularly bad in some areas, but I don't place all the blame on him - not at all. When we show good pass protection in the beginning of the game going to run on every first down is beyond comprehensible. Predictability when you don't have amazing personnel at every position will destroy you every time. Period.

Nice, now SF is winning. We should get Mike Singletary.

Posted by: JesusFreakKaren | September 13, 2009 7:11 PM | Report abuse

It's sad when every big run or pass HAS to get to the endzone b/c Jason Campbell is simply an embarrassment as a starting QB. No feel for the game whatsoever. Should not be allowed anywhere near a 1st string O.

Maybe close with Heath Shuler but Jason has got courage, a good arm, but he's not an NFL quarterback. Todd Collins would have won this game. You've got the receivers. Jason threw it away. I will not watch another redskin game with Jason Campbell playing. It's too stupid and frustrating. Whoever asked "Where's Haynesworth?" needs to watch the frigging game.

The dude fought through double teams all day and still had 4 solo tackles.

There's no sense in pretending that the problem is "the whole team" anymore. Or even the coaches.

The Redskins do not have a QB. That fact was solidified today, for all to see.

Still predicting 3-1 at the quarter pole...i counted thsi game as a loss.

The extremely frustrating part is i don't feel like the Redskins competed well today. Players missed tackles, didn't make plays, and the offensive and defensive play calling sucked equally. Well not equally. 1st and goal followed by portis left no gain, portis left no gain, time out, incomplete throw away because everyone is covered can not be matched in complete ineptitude

Actually I do fool. How many passes did the downfield receivers catch? Moss, Kelly, Thomas (1)? Look at the Giant receivers. They were all averaging over 17 a catch!? Bradshaw averaged around 5.0/carry. Peyton was never running for his life was he?

Sure blame it on Campbell. What do you think would have happened if they had a less mobile quarterback there? Look what happened to McNabb today?

Its the OL not the quarterback. Or does he have to play running back (he almost had to do that again), block for himself and get receivers open?

Sheesh.

Hey, we lose. What's new? And by the score I anticipated in the poll - dammit!!!! I hate being right.

Next year, DON'T PANIC. Stay the course. Replace SUISHAM with an elite FA kicker, draft a #1 CB, draft a #2 o-tackle, a #4 o-tackle, cut CARTWRIGHT and let MASON play in his place.

Keep CAMPBELL until ZORN is gone whenever that is or by 2011 at the latest, then bring in SHANAHAN if he's still around. Wouldn't surprise me if he isn't on a REDSKINS retainer already. In 2011, draft a #1 Q-back, FA runner, cut BETTS, and go from there.

This defense is fine other than CB. By the end of the season, they should be a beast. Meanwhile SHAWN SPRINGS, D.C. turns its lonely eyes to you.

One of the reasons Eli wasn't rushed is because he gets rid of the ball QUICKLY.

Something JC hasn't learned to do in 5 years.

And there are still people out there who think he'll somehow catch lightning in a bottle and become a good QB?

My advice to those people is: Stop torturing yourselves.

This team has no QB.
