Redskins Down by 10 at Halftime

After posting a first-quarter passer rating of 5.6, Jason Campbell's day got worse.

Though he completed a 15-yard pass to Santana Moss to give the Redskins a first down and get the offense moving, he stumbled badly, again, on a third-and-two play at the Tampa Bay 46. After calling a timeout -- a move that appeared to upset head coach Jim Zorn -- Campbell looked for second-year receiver Malcolm Kelly down the right sideline.
The ball, though, was underthrown, and Tampa Bay cornerback Aqib Talib picked up his second interception of the day. That throw represented Campbell's third turnover in just four Redskins' possessions.

The Redskins benefited from another miss by Tampa Bay kicker Mike Nugent, this one from 48 yards. And when Washington got the ball back, running back Clinton Portis started moving it. Portis had what would have been a 15-yard gain called back because of a hold on Kelly, but he busted through for an eight-yard gain two plays later. Campbell then converted a third-down pass to Ladell Betts, and hit fullback Mike Sellers for another first down.

But on what is sure to be a memorable play, one shown over and over if the Redskins don't improve, Campbell looked for tight end Chris Cooley on second and 10 from the Tampa Bay 34, and hit an official -- in the head. Luckily for Washington, Bucs safety Sabby Piscitelli dropped a potential interception. No matter, though. On third and 10, linebacker Quincy Black shot through for a sack of Campbell, and the Redskins had to punt.

And when the Bucs got the ball back at their own 21, rookie quarterback Josh Johnson -- making his first NFL start -- started moving Tampa Bay down the field, both with his arm and legs. He hit a 15-yard pass to tight end Kellen Winslow, ran for 15 yards after being flushed out of the pocket, and the FedEx crowd grew restless as the Bucs moved to the Washington 18 with less than a minute less. But with 26 seconds left, cornerback Carlos Rogers dropped a sure interception -- one he might have returned all the way for a touchdown. Then, rookie linebacker-end Brian Orakpo came up with his first sack, holding the Bucs to Nugent's 37-yard field goal.

So the stunning halftime score: Tampa Bay 10, Washington 0, and a goodly portion of the crowd booed the home team as it headed off the field.

Posted by: ThrowItToMyTeam | October 4, 2009 2:25 PM | Report abuse

For the first couple of games it was Whack-a-Mole in terms of who was going to have a poor game. All the moles popped up today.

Posted by: fan-o-matic | October 4, 2009 2:27 PM | Report abuse

0 catches for kelly, 0 catches for thomas, 0 catches for fred davis. on the plus side tryon got a sack.

Posted by: snydercash4clunkers | October 4, 2009 2:27 PM | Report abuse

Beyond horrible.

This team has bottomed-out large.

A loss would be catastrophic.

Posted by: gdennie | October 4, 2009 2:27 PM | Report abuse

For those who still defend Campbell or this team just are being ignorant and stubborn.

They just don't want to admit that they're wrong.

They are just as pathetic as the product on the damn field. No wonder these delusional fans gravitate to them so much.

Posted by: RedDMV | October 4, 2009 2:28 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, we are def. worst than the Lions. This is beyond sad.

Posted by: rachel216 | October 4, 2009 2:28 PM | Report abuse

Gotta love how you didn't criticize JC, Jason. It's amazing how no one at the post can print the truth.

Posted by: MylesMonroe | October 4, 2009 2:28 PM | Report abuse

When are we going to bench Campbell?

Posted by: Hail2theChief | October 4, 2009 2:28 PM | Report abuse

This team has no inspiration or desire to win. Where is Pepper Rogers when you need him?

Posted by: lifelongfan | October 4, 2009 2:28 PM | Report abuse

Well, I guess this one's in the books. The Skins haven't made a halftime adjustment since the late 80/s.

The Redskins have the best schedule in the league and they are choking on every opportunity to take advantage of this weak schedule. Zorn will make it to the bye week and will be done after that....

Posted by: thebanker21 | October 4, 2009 2:29 PM | Report abuse

My friend, whose not even a Skins fan, thinks Zorn is trying to get fired and trying to spite Snyder. I mean, it kind of makes sense, as crazy as it sounds. The fact the JC is looking like hot garbage (injury or not) and Zorn keeps putting him out there! Put Collins in if you're trying to win for crying out loud!

It is obvious what one of the offensive problems is - BENCH CAMPBELL - simply an awful, slow, sluggish, untalented impersonator of a quarterback - this guy is regressing the longer he stays in an offense.

Put Collins in there - it is obvious that Campbell is unwilling to do what it takes to win - he can't and won't lead - what a wuss - spineless sniveling 3rd string talent quarterback.

Posted by: laserwizard | October 4, 2009 2:30 PM | Report abuse

What do the Redskins see in Fred Davis?
Did they not teach him how to block at USC?

Posted by: jmy999 | October 4, 2009 2:30 PM | Report abuse

As much as I hate Synder and Cerrato at least I agreed with them for trying to get a new QB this offseason. I'd rather have Cutler or Sanchez over Campbell today. Or any other day of the week. He's just so clueless.

RedDMV- You are 100% correct.

Posted by: rachel216 | October 4, 2009 2:30 PM | Report abuse

I still don't completely blame Kelly, Davis and Thomas...JC won't throw to them consistently.

God help us if Collins sucks.

Posted by: rickyroge | October 4, 2009 2:30 PM | Report abuse

The boos were definitely well deserved.

Bench Campbell. Start Daniel. Oh right, we only carry 2 qbs.. what a shame.

Posted by: RedCherokee | October 4, 2009 2:31 PM | Report abuse

Lions have scored 21 points. And we have zero!!

Posted by: rachel216 | October 4, 2009 2:31 PM | Report abuse

time for collins....jz can't come out of halftime and simply stick the same guys out there and think things are going to be different.......jc grab your hat/clipboard....time to move on....same with you rogers....time to start to see what tryon/barnes can do....

Posted by: BeantownGreg1 | October 4, 2009 2:31 PM | Report abuse

It's official, the 'Skins are now the worse team in the league. This is as pathetic as it gets. Can Campbell play any worse? The defense keep making rookie quarterbacks look all pro. It's time to give the ball to Todd Collins and see if he can spark this team. It's time to fire Zorn and Blache and overhaul the whole mess. It's time to sit down some of these premadonna overpriced players and put the backups in. Rodgers drops yet another interception!!! This team has given up. I can't stand to watch this any more.

Here was the key excerpt from Sally Jenkins's recent article:

"After losing to the Lions last week, cornerback DeAngelo Hall said, "You either want it or you don't. A lot of these guys don't want it. They want the other stuff." The paycheck-player, where's-mine environment is set by an owner who never seems to value the right qualities, and who so often seems to equate the size of a contract with character."

There are too many people here who just want to be paid and then stink up the joint. Frankly, at this point, if I were Snyder, I would start to figure out who wants to play--and who just wants to get paid. I have a feeling that too many just want to be paid for crappy performance.

And here is another key gem:

"How long can some players continue to give more while making a lot less? And how long can all of them keep fighting for Zorn when no one in the front office will step forward and preach real loyalty, by publicly declaring, "This is our coach and the path we're on."

And then there is the problem of allowing Portis to undermine the team. For years Snyder allowed Portis to openly undermine the coach on TV and the radio. What message does that send to the players about the coach and his authority?

Posted by: jiacinto | October 4, 2009 2:31 PM | Report abuse

there's only one QB on this roster that has started a playoff game. i think it's time we turn to him.

Posted by: kman2 | October 4, 2009 2:32 PM | Report abuse

EVEN IF COLLINS DOES A BETTER JOB AT QB AND OFFENSE GETS A LITTLE SPARK, THE D WAS SUPPOSED TO BE AWESOME THIS YR...WHAT HAPPENED...THEY SUCK
CERRATO...YOU ARE FIRED

Posted by: jj44skins | October 4, 2009 2:32 PM | Report abuse

this team can only fantasize about an 8-8 finish now. Doesn't matter who starts at QB from here on out, at the end of this year its time to gut everything and start over.

Posted by: james808d | October 4, 2009 2:32 PM | Report abuse

The rapid decline of this team's defense is shocking. JC having his worst game ever just puts an exlamation point on things.

Is Joe Gibbs willing to make a 3rd go of things?

Posted by: Alan4 | October 4, 2009 2:32 PM | Report abuse

beeps

Posted by: BeantownGreg1 | October 4, 2009 2:33 PM | Report abuse

right now, for this game, forgetting the rest of the season - I cannot think of any good reason why Zorn does not replace Campbell - even if it's just for the second half today -

Posted by: JohnDinHouston | October 4, 2009 2:33 PM | Report abuse

Again, I tell you, the best play for the Skins in the 1st half is that ball hitting the official as it was about to be picked off anyway for an interception and an easy TD the other way. WATCH THE REPLAY!!!
What made it the best play is the fact the ball hit the official and the Bucks Safety dropped the easy interception, which probably would not have been returned all the way for a TD if he had caught it anyway.
JC should have had 3 INTS in the first half, with one returned all the way.

Posted by: JeanJak | October 4, 2009 2:33 PM | Report abuse

I am so glad I am not in the market to have to watch this game and am having to watch the Giants and Chiefs instead. At least the Chiefs are supposed to be this bad. I have been a Skins fan for as long as I can remember. This has just made me sick the two games i have watched this year. I have never been so disappointed with a team in my life. Is this the players, coaching, or both?

Posted by: richr75 | October 4, 2009 2:33 PM | Report abuse

kickoff coverage sucks too. good thing we wont be seeing another one of those today.

Posted by: kman2 | October 4, 2009 2:33 PM | Report abuse

tuning into NFL Network StatsZone, teh voiceover announcers used terms like "disgraceful" and "putrid". and i cannot disagree.

Posted by: mdrockjock | October 4, 2009 2:35 PM | Report abuse

I recall Blache saying he was not going to change the defensive scheme of Gregg Williams. What are the fundamental / specific differences in their systems that are making this current defense look so bad?

Posted by: fan-o-matic | October 4, 2009 2:35 PM | Report abuse

fanomatic, i believe it is the fact that 2 players on d make like 3x that of the rest.....would that entice you to play

Posted by: jj44skins | October 4, 2009 2:37 PM | Report abuse

Lions have scored 21 points. And we have zero!!

Posted by: rachel216 | October 4, 2009 2:31 PM

rachel, every team playing today has scored points, except us.

JC guided the team to 34 points against the Lions 2 years ago, and Moss didn't even play in that game. This team has never scored 30 point under Zorn. What's happening here?

Posted by: Alan4 | October 4, 2009 2:38 PM | Report abuse

what an insight into the sorry state this team we love is in.

right now, for this game, forgetting the rest of the season - I cannot think of any good reason why Zorn does not replace Campbell - even if it's just for the second half today -

maybe he's not allowed after all the dollars and two picks the FO spent to get his sorry as*

Posted by: 1965skinsfan | October 4, 2009 2:38 PM | Report abuse

An interception and Hall celebrates? WTF!!! Then Campbell looks more pathetic and can't find an open receiver. Is something wrong with him today? We have to settle again for a FG. Do these guys know they are playing Tampa Bay????? Zorn has lost this team.

now a second and Run... do I haer a 3 and out

Posted by: ThrowItToMyTeam | October 4, 2009 2:54 PM | Report abuse

4th down and 2 and indecision by the coach. So, we call a timeout. Good grief! Have we even made a 4th down effort this year?

Posted by: jfoster13 | October 4, 2009 2:57 PM | Report abuse

Since Danny Boy seems reluctant to fire his golden boy offensive coordinator now head coach (Zorn), my question is this...If Danny Boy WOULD have hired a head coach 2 years ago AFTER he hired Zorn to be the O Coordinator (I know, it seems backwards that Danny Boy and Vinnie "Bubble Eyed" Cerrato hired a O Coordinator BEFORE A Head Coach, but that's how this franchise is run and is a totally different story altogether) Anyway, if we had hired a real Head Coach, would Zorn still be our O Coordinator??? I think NOT!

Posted by: ThrowItToMyTeam | October 4, 2009 3:03 PM | Report abuse

Someone please tell me who's going to QB next year? This year is already a lost cause.

Do we even have a high round pick next year ?????
