Redskins elevate Rabach, Hall and Alexander to captain status

By Barry Svrluga

One bit of news slipped by during the bye week: The Redskins added captains.

Prior to the season, Donovan McNabb was voted the offensive captain and London Fletcher the defensive captain, and the Redskins rotated captains on special teams. At the midway point of the season, Coach Mike Shanahan asks the team to vote again to add an offensive and defensive captain and permanently install a special teams captain.

The results: Center Casey Rabach joins McNabb as an offensive captain, cornerback DeAngelo Hall joins Fletcher on defense, and Lorenzo Alexander -- whom Shanahan has called the best special teams player he's ever been around -- is the permanent special teams captain.

This represents almost a complete overhaul from last year, when the captains were Fletcher and defensive tackle Cornelius Griffin (out of the game) on defense, quarterback Jason Campbell (in Oakland) and tackle Chris Samuels (retired) on offense, and fullback Mike Sellers (still here) and running back Rock Cartwright (in Oakland).

So to become offensive captain all you have to do is get blown up by defensive linemen?

Talk to the other players they vote on captains the coaches don't have a say.

His teammates voted him there... I guess that says something.

So I guess the campaign to bench Rabach has fallen on deaf ears..

Let me fix that for you Bar-

"Huge pieces of relevant news have been slipping by the RI staff for months on end while we have chosen to focus on inane, repetitive screeds about Albert Haynesworth's heart rate, Unnamed sources in the building with knowledge of the situation, everything DeAngelo Hall says, and how best to copy/paste whatever is posted on the Examiner/ESPN NFC East blog."

Carry on.

I wonder if McNabb voted for him after getting mauled by Suh?

Posted by: Devo2 | November 12, 2010 3:30 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, Rabach is captain material - let's call him Captain Speed Bump.

Not sure why they were considered unstoppable last time -- based on wins over Jax and DET? Maybe they were overhyped ...

Posted by: zcezcest1 | November 12, 2010 3:00 PM

Definitely LOTS of hype surrounding Vick and the Eagles already at that point...including the 2nd half against the Packers...media gave us no chance to beat them (shocker)...and had just lost handily to the then lowly Rams...I think we were 7 point dogs. I was kinda amazed we came out with a win.

Perhaps Casey will start playing like a captain now. Perhaps not.

The campaign? If you mean the moaning and bitc%ing of RI posters...yeah, deaf ears. And rightfully so.

I'm "thinking" maybe they voted for him to get him to take more responsibility for the play of himself and the other NO-LINEMEN. However, it seems like it will backfire.

So the role of a captain is to trip your fellow co-captain?! Interesting.

Posted by: Neisha_H | November 12, 2010 6:31 PM | Report abuse

Rabach may not be able to block a pop warner nose tackle, but he is one of the best at calling formations. I imagine that is probably the reason he was voted captain by his team.

Rabach edged out Heyer in the voting - what in the world has happened to my Redskins?

Posted by: coparker5 | November 12, 2010 7:58 PM | Report abuse

i think Rabach's a captain because of his smarts. not physical talent....
