Redskins enter 4th quarter down by 14

The Redskins began the third quarter with as many total yards as they had yards in penalties (69). Top back Clinton Portis was on the bench with a concussion, and quarterback Jason Campbell was returning to the field after being driven out of the game with a bruised chest on the last of the five sacks he suffered in the first half.

So what did the Redskins do? They came up with one of their only consistent, productive drives of the season.

The drive began with a key third-down scramble from Campbell, who picked up 19 yards when he needed five. On third and 1 near midfield, new play-caller Sherman Lewis opted for a play-action pass to fullback Mike Sellers, who gained 11 yards to keep the drive alive. Campbell found Portis's replacement, Ladell Betts, for a 23-yard gain on a screen play that got the ball to the Atlanta 5.

There, the Redskins struggled to get it in. Campbell found Malcolm Kelly for four yards on first down, but Rock Cartwright couldn't punch it in on successive runs. On fourth and 1, though, the Redskins turned to Betts, who scored to cut the Falcons' lead to 24-10. The drive: 13 plays, 80 yards, and it took seven minutes, 50 seconds.

After a three-and-out for the defense -- one preserved by safety LaRon Landry with a key tackle on third and 1 -- the Redskins got the ball back and began moving it again. Tight end Fred Davis gained 16 yards, Betts ran for 15 off left tackle, and as the quarter closed, Campbell found Antwaan Randle El for a key conversion on third and three.

Thus, the Redskins entered the fourth quarter trailing by two touchdowns, but on the move, with a first down at the Atlanta 19.

At least they've made it respectable but ATL seems to have collapsed in the 2nd half. I still think ATL will still win, but they've made it respectable at least.

Hopefully the D doesn't let the Falcons go right down the field and score. That has been their MO.

I don't know what to do? I'm getting a little excited but well the overwhelming feeling of dread is still there.

Landry should be cut immediately. That was without a doubt the worst most feeble attempt at tackling I have ever seen. He sucks and I don't care what safety postion you put him at. The only place he can play is on the bench.

Posted by: kingpenn1 | November 8, 2009 3:30 PM | Report abuse

Not to be a complainer, but on both of the long runs by Turner, I've seen a skins DB with a falcons WR behind him, running towards turner, with the WR holding the DBs jersey.

Posted by: -swb | November 8, 2009 3:32 PM | Report abuse

We have WITHOUT A DOUBT, the SOFTEST secondary in the entire league. I've never seen so many soft players. What's up with all the whiffing on the tackling? What's up with Deangelo Hall not making a move? I miss #21.

It's over. That just took the wind out of our sails.

Posted by: rachel216 | November 8, 2009 3:32 PM | Report abuse

LL was too busy thinking of how he'd celebrate after another routine tackle to actually make that tackle. He's a prima donna dou***bag too. Send him, CP and all those with their me-first attitude packing.

Posted by: 1965skinsfan | November 8, 2009 3:32 PM | Report abuse

No excuse for Landry but Hall's attempted tackle was just as bad. The only difference is you expect that from Hall. It's nice that Hall can mix it up with Atlanta bench but when he has a chance to do it on the field he can't.

Using YOUR logic, the TD wasn't on JC, it was on Yoder; YODER put all the effort into a pass that didn't need to be thrown where it was.

So, the INT is on Davis, and the TD is all credit to Yoder.

Watching the same neutered JC sac-suckers sit around RI week after week and sing his praises has gotten old.

Going forward, I'm going to ignore the ludicrous comments from the maggots who apparently can't let go of #17 either because they're relatives, they like the fact that he's black, or they have IQs lower than room temperature.

These same clowns sit around and say "Landry sucks" and "the O-line sucks" (and they're right, Landry and the O-line both suck), but become apoplectic with rage when someone adds, "and JC sucks too."

They're low-grade sociopaths.

And what would you great coaches call on 4th and 1. If they called a running play and got stopped they would have been idiots. It is more about execution then anything else. The defense got penetration and forced Sellers to run back instead of parallel. Davis was wide open about five yds passed the LOS but Collins must not have seen him. The coaches suck but stop blaming poor play for bad play calls.

Actually, what I KNOW is that I am able - like most Redskins fans - to see that this head coach, O-line, defensive tackling in the secondary, AND Jason Campbell SUCK.

The issue is that among three posters on this thread, the very idea that Campbell is included in the group that SUCKS sends them into a spittle-spewing, teeth-gnashing episode of rage.

Well, fork them. I'm going to point out as I have all season that Campbell is horrible QB, and I'll point it out for the remainder of the season as well.

They can sit in the corner and pull their pud and lick their holograms of JC for the rest of the year.

They're irrational losers.

I would say Portis was correct -HE IS THE PROBLEM, along with the Whole front ofice, all the Coaches, and A hand full off of overpaid MFr's

You want me to get new material? You cry about Campbell every day you butthurt pillow biting little knob gobbler. Just change your name to WHAAAAAAA already!! We have a lot more issues that are far worse than JC but you can't see that with Todd Collins balls on your chin. Go back to staring at TC's belly button.

I'm not a Collins-lover, or a Campbell- sac-sucker like you.

This is your "better material?"

God only knows what kind of fork-up you are in real life.

well, nothing to play for now, except worse draft picks and/or self-respect. Marko MUST be no.2 receiver now, Thomas and Kelly have had every chance. SAY WE WANT VINNY OUT, WE WANT VINNY OUT! sorry for caps, booze kicking in now...PS all chelsea are ***ts

As I've said, if the team has to end up 2-14 to get rid of Cerrato, then so be it. But, if I were in charge, this is what I would do:

1. Alternate between Collins and Campbell. Let the best man win here. Open up the QB job to competition.
2. Start rotating the 2nd and 3rd string players on offense.
3. Have a team meeting with Snyder, Cerrato, and Zorn present telling the whole team that everyone is now auditioning for his job next year.
4. Determine who wants to play and do well and who just wants a paycheck. Get rid of the latter and keep the former.

Other things that I would do is have a meeting between Snyder, Cerrato, and Zorn. I would create a spreadsheet with every player's name, jersey number, position, and salary. Then I would have add a column that would evaluate whether the player is worth the salary, something like a price-to-earnings ratio. Then I would have three more columns: keep next year, on the bubble, and cut. I would continuously update that spreadsheet after every game.

Sounds like your surprised that we lost.
Landry sucks!

I would fire Zorn right now and make promote Blache to Head Coach whether he agrees or not.

Sherm Lewis would be OC and the other Sherm would call plays per Lewis's direction.

....this team needs an enema!

Larry--I bet that Blache's strong defense of Snyder is for that reason. He probably is angling for the HC job.

Anyone blaming this loss on JC either did not watch the game or doesn't know football. All he did was after getting crushed in the 1st half lead the offense to two TDs and cut the lead to 7. The fact that the rest of the team (esp Hall and Landry) did not step up was the main cause of the loss.

It would be nice to have Chase Daniels or Colt out there getting some experience the rest of the year, but thanks to Vinny that won't happen.

JC's stat line was better than Ryan's. The team found some guts somewhere at halftime, especially the offense. Yeah, still only 17 points, but at least they didn't roll over and give it up.

I'd like to hire Zorn to hold my clip-board at work for me.
How much do you think it cost?

But at least he'll tell me the next day how much I'm improving.

Campbell now has 25 sacks. Its looking like Patrick Ramsey under Spurrier but Ramsey isn't even close to as mobile as Campbell. He won't last the season at this rate that seems certain.

I think Hall's contract, like all Redskins contracts, is the basic union contract - they don't have to work on Sundays or evenings.
