Redskins extend lead to 17-13

The third quarter featured little exciting action, though a big punt return and interception for the Redskins kept them ahead, 17-13, going into the final quarter of their 2009 season.

After failing to move the ball to start the second half and then stopping the Chargers on their first possession of the third quarter, the Redskins were sparked by an unlikely source - punt returner Antwaan Randle El.

The veteran had failed to do much in the punt return game this season, gaining just 59 yards on 15 returns before Sunday. But Randle El took the punt on his own six-yard line and raced 43 yards to the 49-yard line to give the Redskins great starting field position.

Washington then moved the ball behind short passes from Jason Campbell and runs by Quinton Ganther, but after a 14-yard pass to Fred Davis moved the chains and gave the Redskins first and goal on the San Diego 10-yard line, they were unable to move the ball or get into the end zone and settled for a 22-yard field goal from Graham Gano to extend the lead to 17-13.

Both offenses remained unable to do much in their next few possessions. San Diego went three and out and the Redskins moved 16 yards before punting. The Chargers then started to move the ball before linebacker Rocky McIntosh leapt up at the Redskins 22 yard line and pulled down his second interception of the year, nabbing Volek's pass out of the air and returning it to give the Redskins possession at the 49-yard line.

Washington failed to pick up a first down and opted to punt on fourth-and-1 rather than go for it and San Diego took over as the quarter came to a close.

Agreed..
We can also thank Jim Fassel.. He recommended Zorn to Vinny and Snyder during the Gibbs successor search (after Gregg Williams was denied and Spags turned down Snyder).
Vinny's last day at Redskins Park.. Friday Feb 26th...Hip Hip Hooray..

Zorn will be shown the "swinging gate" tomorrow.. But, Redskins fans will always be indebted to him for getting Vinny finally fired.

I watched the Vikes put up 31 points at haltime earlier, the Packers (playing for nothing) put up 33 on the Cards, even Chiefs have 30 points right now.

It's typical of the Redskins to struggle to get to 17 points against Charger back-ups who have nothing to play for.

The sooner this inept head coach and this indecisive QB are gone the better.

I vote we officially change the term 'shank' to 'shweeze'. Usage: Shawn shweezed it left from 30 yards, and texted me afterwards.

The early word on Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker is not good.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that preliminary tests show Welker having a torn ACL and torn MCL. He is scheduled to undergo more testing on Monday, and until an MRI confirms the diagnosis Welker can hold out hope that it's not that serious, but at the moment things look grim.

4th to 6th aint that big of a drop, but I've been calling for San Fran to give us their 1st n 3rd (they have a couple in the 10-15 range), and that might line us up for one of the OTs we covet without giving up value of the pick.

If we are stuck in the #4 position, though, I am not in the 'draft the best OT' camp, because whoever we draft is going to get paid #4 money. So we should draft the player that gives us the best chance to earn that kinda money. Even if that means we don't get a top OT in the draft, we are not an OT away from the SB, so we have to resist the stop-gap urge to blow our opportunity to grab a top-flight talent.

As I write this, the Redskins have just lost to the SD second teamers, coached by the man that Snyder fired one year after winning the division in 1999 (Norv Turner). For a man who seems to fancy himself as a whiz kid, Snyder has just come full circle - his team having been beaten by a coach whose team is now 13-3 and in the playoff hunt.

Getting rid of Cerrato is a start, but how long will it take to wring out the know-it-all arrogance and micromanaging anal retentiveness of an owner who, unfortunately, cannot be sacrificed at the altar, as Jim Zorn will obviously be.

Sort of a typical game for the Skins. Dropped INT's all over the field, a late lead that the D couldn't hold and a desperate drive with no time remaining that moved the ball 0 - yep ZERO, yards.

Once again, it is the other team that has the QB that can lead them to victory late in the fourth quarter with a great march to the winning points. This time, he was the back-up.

Looks like we are picking fourth in the draft...

Build from the inside out. Bradford won't survive behind this O-Line. Look at what happened to David Carr and look at whats happening with the QB in Detroit, he's always getting hit and out with an injury.

Posted by: Skins1 | January 3, 2010 7:39 PM | Report abuse

I hope Blache is given the door at the same time Zorn is. These announcers keep saying that the Redskins have a great defense, are they NUTS. Great defenses win games, make plays, these smucks cannot even catch a ball. Tryon drops easy interception, costs them the game. Smoot drops easy interception leads to points. This defense is like watching slow death. The defense must be designed around the premise let the offense use up as much time before you let them score. No pressure on the QB, no blitzes, the same old song and dance.

Offensive play calling sucks as well, how many times did they throw that lame azz smoke screen, 7 times. After the turnover by Rocky Mc what do we do we run off tackle instead of going for a bomb to the end-zone. Nobody fears this team because they do not attack on offense or defense.

Since KC won do we move up to the 4th pick?

Pretty much everything we could have asked for happened today... browns and chiefs win and we lose..Perfect. Honestly, I just wanted to see a couple positives before this game and have the team not give up. I got my wish because we didnt lay down and malcolm kelly had a great game.

We will have the #4 pick now because we lost to the chiefs so that probably means Okung, Bradford, and Berry will be there at #4. To me it is COMPLETELY OBVIOUS we need to take OKUNG.

This situation is just like last year, people were saying "oh great we could be 9-7 if we win", who gives a s***, 8-8 got us the #13 pick as opposed to #16 or 17 and we land Orakpo when if we won we would have never had a shot at.

Okung is a leader and is a legitimate day 1 starter at LT. The chiefs were clearly going to take him to protect Cassel..we lucked out big time.

Blatche has said sevceral times that he is going to do whatever he can to help Gray get prepared to be a head coach in the NFL. Today a report came out that the oversees the Rooney Rule didn't think that Shanahan was going to be the next head coach of the Redskins. Maybe that's why they felt Gray's interview was legitamate.

This is just a gut feeling. Let's see what happens over the next day or two.

Zorn has acquitted himself well in the cluster in DC. He was hired as OC, so when offered the HC position, what can he do? Resign? The FO gives him an ill fitting DT when he needs an OT, what is he going to do? Throw a hissy fit?

"Bradford is a done deal..."

I'd have no problem with that.

Thing is, the team also needs a right tackle, and someone to simplify protection schemes.

Again, it looked like the chargers got sacks/pressures because the skins don't audible or change the count.

It looked like they waited until just before the snap to shift their front to blitz.

That falls on Campbell for not changing the snap count and Zorn for not using 'no huddle' when it was apparent that that's what was going on.

The same things happened in the giants and cowboys games.
