Redskins have 4-point lead going into the 4th quarter

The third quarter lacked offensive firepower, though it provided plenty of sacks - including the ongoing battle for the Redskins' team lead between veteran defensive end Andre Carter and rookie Brian Orakpo.

The Redskins opened the second half with the ball, but ended up moving backwards on their first possession when Jason Campbell was sacked for a loss of 13 on third down and Washington punted.

Oakland then took over on its own 44-yard line with JaMarcus Russell, not Gradkowski, under center. Russell completed his first three passes and a couple runs moved the Raiders to the Redskins 28-yard line. A Brian Orakpo sack pushed Oakland back and the Raiders were forced to eventually settle for Janikowski's 54-yard field goal to pull within 17-13.

The Redskins again failed to move the chains on their next drive as Campbell was sacked yet again, but Oakland's next drive - which originally looked as though it may lead to more points - was stifled by sacks from Andre Carter and Orakpo, who continue to battle it out for the team lead, and Oakland was forced to punt.

Washington took over at its own 20-yard line and moved quickly into Oakland territory behind some strong runs from Quinton Ganther and an eight-yard swing pass to Rock Cartwright on third and 6.

The quarter ended with the Redskins facing second and 9 just inside Raiders territory holding a four-point lead.

Most offenses have their best run blockers on the right side anyway...

Silly commentator.

O line very shaky. The WR and TE have learned something and know more what to do now. Also they're all getting more comfortable with each other.

Flounder21,
Crap W-L record will force change...
However, wins in the last 4 games will screw the Draft for us and give life to Zorn and Vinny so you will be Floundering in mediocrity for the next 5 years, like the last 10 years.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I'm in interested in rooting our team to lose.

--------------------------
losses wouldnt hurt vis a vis the 2010 Draft pick positions for the 5 picks we have....

Win the last 3 games..and end up with mediocre picks like the last 10 years.

That's a three score lead in my book.

Here is my hope, and here's what I know won't happen. Hire a competent GM to run the franchise, take Vinny outback of Redskins park and execute him by firing squad, while the weapons are still hot get Randel El out there as well. Hire Russ Grimm as Head Coach, allow him to pick his DC, suggest that he keep Sherm Lewis as OC. Re-sign Campbell, Ganther, Gano, and Rogers. In FA sign a true FS, and SLB, and sign a starting caliber tackle. In the draft go O tackle, speed back, O guard, O tackle, and late take wide receiver to replace the executed Randel El.

true Flounder.. It depends on the GM who has the picks.
New Orleans record created great Draft Position(s) and look where they are.

My primary point was that a "win" validates Vinny and Zorn, who remain in 2010 and we stay in a rut of mediocrity.... ....
Zorn and Vinny were handed a playoff team from Gibbs, at the end of 2007, and they have driven it steadily into a joke.. 8-8 in 08 and now 3-9.

In the draft go O tackle, speed back, O guard, O tackle, and late take wide receiver to replace the executed Randel El.

i agree with that. i like sherm lewis. that way they can have continuity on an offense that seems to have improved and still get a head coach that wont lose them games.

If I was on the Raiders, I'd wear my helmet into the locker room. I bet Tom Cable is looking to break some jaws again

I am not completely sold on JC but come on, he is no Jamarcus Russell East Coast. For a #1 draft pick, this guy is the poster boy for a BUST.

Posted by: JeanJak | December 13, 2009 7:26 PM | Report abuse

Skins,

Zorn is already fired he just doesn't know it yet, and Vinny well I don't think he would go in a total colapse anyway. I hope they replace Vinny but losing these last few games wont make it happen.

Posted by: Flounder21 | December 13, 2009 7:26 PM | Report abuse

What does it say about Zorns offensive capabilities when a guy who was calling bingo games a few weeks ago takes back-up players and puts up back to back 30 point games and you've never hit 30 once since you've been here? Its like Sharon Pratt Kelly when she lost the mayoral race to a crackhead.

Why the kill Vinny talk...give the man some credit...some of these young dudes he's gotten either through the draft or off Georgia Ave. are ballin!

Later for the kill Vinny talk!

Posted by: rickyroge | December 13, 2009 7:23 PM

I'm with you, sicwidit, on this one. The way the young guys have been playing, I think Vinny is a solid talent evaluator. What I want is someone over him so that when Vinny says "best available player" then that guy says "best available tackle." Problem is, right now, that guy is Dan Snyder.

Posted by: League-Source | December 13, 2009 7:27 PM | Report abuse

ricky, Davis and Thomas playing well does nothing to make up for the horrible team building for years and years. The outright ignoring of our most glaring weakness (oline), the terrible FA decisions and awful contracts, the undermining of his QB, the knee jerk trades for Jason Taylor, Erasmus James, the need for a Kendal trade because for an entire offseason he assumed Todd Wade was the answer to a lost Dockery, and on and on and on, some good games from Davis and Thomas erase none of that. They were second round picks for chripes sake!

Posted by: zjfr2 | December 13, 2009 7:27 PM | Report abuse

Do Grimm and Lewis have the same offensive philosophy?

Keep Sherm only if you keep the WCO.

Posted by: Skins930 | December 13, 2009 7:28 PM | Report abuse

Flounder21--For some nagging reason, however irrational, I have a feeling that Zorn may stay. I don't know why, but I just feel that way.

Posted by: jiacinto | December 13, 2009 7:28 PM | Report abuse

Is anyone surprise the Raiders are not undisciplined? Look at their Coach, the wife beater, and nut job who choked an assistant of his for no reason?
It beats me as to why the NFL is allowing this guy to still be a coach. Would it have been the same if if was a player with such distinguished record?

Posted by: JeanJak | December 13, 2009 7:29 PM | Report abuse

Zorn is gone put it in the bank.

Hell I'm Not sold on JC eiher but this is how we should have been playing all year long. know the last 3 weeks were close but we should have knocked them guys out!!!!! No it s time for revenge and make the playoff picture real ugly. I hope Coolet is ok to comeback and we can run 2 tight end sets . The young guns are finally starting to pay off.

Right. But we've already gotten rid of the guy who did that, Joe Gibbs.

Posted by: League-Source | December 13, 2009 7:32 PM | Report abuse

Zorn is probably in Cleveland next year with Holmgren (his QB coach again??).
Hopefully Vinny is kicked further upstairs with another stupid title.... Executive, Executive, Vice President..yada yada..
And a competent Head Coach is brought in who can pick personnel, like Shanahan or the like. But, this is assuming Snyder can check his Ego again, like he did with Gibbs.. ???

I am conflicted on Campbell. I can see business cases for both keeping him and letting him go.

Posted by: jiacinto | December 13, 2009 7:32 PM | Report abuse

zftjr-

Yes, Vinny has made some mistakes and he is not a top executive, but you gotta spread some of that to Joe Gibbs. The difference is that these are young guys making plays not the "has beens" we had here before.

Posted by: rickyroge | December 13, 2009 7:32 PM | Report abuse

That was fun to watch.

30+ points in two straight games. Wow.

Orakpo is a beast. Fred Davis has skills and even made some nice blocks in the running game. JC played well under heavy pressure. Guano's kickoffs were a vast improvement over Swissham. Ganther is a tough runner.

But ARE needs to go. Not only does he contribute nothing in the way of positive plays, he's generally a liability. And every time he's on the field, he's depriving Kelly/Mitchell of opportunities.

Posted by: MrRedskin21 | December 13, 2009 7:33 PM | Report abuse

with all the Vinny-speak about SS, it would be irresponsible not to bench ARE for the rest of the year.

I'm no longer conflicted on Campbell. Resign him AND draft a QB...

I am not a big fan of JC as I have said, but with these young weapons, we may be able to do something.

Go get Spiller and two O-lineman and let's win the division!

Where are the suisham defenders? Gano is better.

The Ganther signing was largely ridiculed by folks wanting Alex Boone.

Still, vinny needs to go.

I think Snyder has some tough decisions to make.

If it were me...I'd fire Zorn and offer the gig to Lewis.

THANK YOU!!!!

As much as I love Joe Gibbs, his second stint set us back from a personnel standpoint.

Lloyd
Archuleta
Portis (guarunteed money)
Thrash
Brunell
ARE (as a primary receiver and PR)
TJ Duckett

Vinny's screw ups

Jason Taylor
No drafting of O-lineman

Both did have some successful personnel moves though.

I'm not as down on Vinny as many of you are.

Of course Vinny needs to go.

But now he won't.

Now Vinny will be in for a 10-year extension, even though though the team is coming together DESPITE his decisions.

Vinny is still behind the Zorn-hiring fiasco.

Vinny was lucky that his deal for Cutler fell through. Had it gone through we would not only be missing JC17, but we would not have the pick that landed Orakpo.

Vinny was lucky to get Derrick Dockery to land in his lap.

Vinny was lucky that Levi Jones was still on the street after failing to sign some quality veteran Oline depth and our old starters predictably began to fall like flies.

Our cap situation is still hamstrung and we still have $160 mill wrapped up in 2 defenders - neither of whom played today and we still managed to win 34-13.

Vinny is still a frickin loser and has no business running a football team.

Posted by: p1funk | December 13, 2009 7:48 PM | Report abuse

GANTHER and YODER come through with flying colors. To my mind MIKE SELLERS need not step back on the football field in burgendy and gold. And ALDRIGE and MASON can waiver by-bye also. With PORTIS, BETTS (maybe he returns), CARTWRIGHT and GANYTHER who needs draft picks for the 2010 backfield? Only if LaDELL doesn't recover frrom his very serious knee injury which is a distinct possibility. THEN we need a running-back, but MASON ain't it.

And sadly neglected by our POST staff regarding newbies to the offense, GRAHAM GANO. The first FA need for 2010 has been filled - maybe. With kickers you never are quite sure of what you're getting from week to week, let alone from season to season. But I surely do like what I've seen so far of GANO. 5.0 hang-time KO's to the goal line, to the coffin corner, into the end-zone. Consistant 40+ FG's not to mention X-points. So far so good.

And kudos to the GM for finding him in mid-season rather than waiting for the gathering of the wolves at season's end ( that being GM's needing FA kickers). The BAG-MAN stole one on the league. Hell, I might even have to cease disparaging remarks about his management abilities. Way to go VINCENTE.

Of course in winning, we may miss out on a great player with the #4 overall pick. And I'm gonna' have to revise my wish list for next year with GANO in the fold.

I hate to say it, but realistically, with the areas where the Skins are weak, and what's available for cheap on the market...

Trade Cooley. Trade Portis. Clone Fletcher. Pick up somebody's backup QB in the off-season.

The picks go to FS, OLB, and O Linemen.

And that's what I think.

And if Randle El is back returning punts next year, fire the coach - I don't care if it's his first game with the Skins - fire him!
