Redskins Hire A Pro Scout

The Redskins have promoted Alex Santos to the position of pro scout, according to team sources, a considerable promotion for one of the most well-liked people around Redskins Park. Santos is a hard worker and eager learner who has been trying to break into the football operations side, and this is a major opportunity for him.

For the past two seasons Santos was the team's pro personnel assistant, doing lots of odd jobs for the staff, including picking up players on tryouts at the airport, shuttling guys to physicals, etc. He has also helped evaluate lower-tier players in the past - he often sat with the scouts in the pressbox during Redskins games - and comes from a strong football background.

Santos was a starting guard at NC State and graduated in 2000. He has a masters in special education and coached his high school football team in New Jersey, then spent 2005 as a graduate assistant and intern at Vanderbilt before joining the Skins.

His promotion marks a recent trend, with Vinny Cerrato reshaping the organization, post-Joe Gibbs, largely with people who have no experience in their current job. Santos, for instance, replaces pro scout Terry Ray, who was a scout for the Skins for the past three years. Cerrato himself has never been in a position as powerful as this, while head coach Jom Zorn had never been a coordinator, new offensive coordinator Sherman Smith has no experience in that role, new defensive line coach John Palermo has never coached in the NFL (but has vast college experience).

The person the Redskins hire to replace Louis Riddick as pro personnel director may very well be a former scout who, again, would be in this role for the first time in his career. It's a stark contrast to the way Gibbs did things, where he essentially amassed people who had vast experience beyond the position they staffed for the Skins (former head coaches as assistants, etc.).

The results of the Gibbs regime were mixed at best and ultimately fell well short of the goal to bring another Lombardi home, so change was in order, and, like with everything else, the results of this new philosophy will be part of this tale as well.

The Skins still have openings for director of college scouting - they could very well promote from within - and for a director of pro personnel, with league sources believing they could begin speaking to candidates for that position as soon as today.

I'm all about the scene in the Untouchables when Malone gets the apple from the tree, but I do wonder about this move. Cerrato wants loyalty, I assume, but man are the Skins' administrative posts green right now.

What is it with this guy? He constantly reports jibba jabba that is not news and then it is a negative spin. when real news happens it is on espn and every other network before we have it as "insiders". Terrible just Terrible. As I recall the adjusting of OTA's and Minicamp for coach Joe did not work, if I recall we actually had more injuries the last two years than in the first two.
Beat reporter sucks-the only inside news he has is about meet ups at nationals games, DJ's, The wire, and happy hour

Posted by: Great One | May 14, 2008 10:31 AM

This proves my point, Yahoo, Espn and other networks are reporting a 5th suspect arrested in Sean Taylor's Death. any post on that. No-because he has no inside information.
and for all the people defending his "sources" you dont have to name your sources but when your sources dont give you real inside information then it is hard to believe that they are inside sources. inside sources tend to give you information that no one else would have, when have we ever believe the beat reporter had a true inside scoop.

Yeah, the vastly experienced guys were doing so great!

Its nice the Redskins are promoting from within and giving people a chance to show what they can do instead of hiring people who can go no higher because they have risen to their level of incompetence.

Let's promote Jason La Canfora; no, can't do that -- he's got no experience in that higher position! Maybe the Baltimore Sun will steal him by offering him more money to write the Ravens' blog -- he's got so much experience, he must be good at it!

Jason how about giving us some context. How many pro scouts does the redskin organization have on it's staff?

This article implies that Santos is leading our scouting department. My guess he is just another cog in the system and I would assume we have many pro scouts with considerable experience. Give us some facts here. He sounds like a hard worker that deserves a chance. Assuming he is just one of a large staff I don't see the problem.

Take a buyout like Kornheiser. I'd pitch in. Or, more likely, continue to spew Redskins venom.

It doesn't matter who does it, what they do, or how they do it. In Jason "I had no experience covering the Skins in a blog before covering the Skins in a blog" Canfora's eyes, everything that is ever done in Burgundy and Gold (or Maroon and Black) is crap.

This blog continues another recent trend from "Redskins Hater" - hating blog posts - from the Washington Post Redskins blog.

Please, Washington Post, could you at least TRY for some neutral coverage?

Another trend continued by the "Redskins Hater".

It doesn't matter who does it, why they do it, or what the result is - Jason "I had no experience covering the Redskins in a blog before I was hired to cover the Redskins in a blog" Canfora hates it.

Way to go hater! Continue to work on ruining the journalistic integrity of the Washington Post with this crap!

Exactly. It is about time that we finally hear from the currently serving president of the JLC for life fan club.

hey 4th--I'm hoping they release some more tickets in June, but it they initially went on sale April 14th at 11am (I was online and dialing two phones as they sold out 15 minutes later). Apparently, they get mailed in June according to redskins.com:

Here's the url to where the tickets were on sale, if you (or anyone else) is interested in keeping an eye on if more are released:

JLC does an average job spilling out information on the skins.
But it does NOT matter if he is biased; this is a BLOG not a WP column. You might respond with "Yes this is a column because it is written by a WP writer." and you would be wrong. There are misspellings, grammatical errors and other atrocities against the English language. So please stop commenting on the fact that JLC doesn't love Synder like you wish he would because it doesn't add anything to the discussion, besides Vinny has already nestled himself in Synder's colon and is firing everyone who comes close.

But P24 comments about the article needing more substance is 100% valid and needs to be addressed in future entries...not future columns.

If you ask me, you get a balanced opinion from reading more than one source of information.

If your job is to complain about a blog, you seem to have plenty of experience.

How about just read a different redskins blog? Lord knows there are plenty of people with computers who think they know everything.

Jason points out the fact that people are new at their jobs AND he points out that Gibbs brining in experience didn't work at all and you are giving him crap.

I believe that half the people who complain about JLC are on the Redskins payroll. In fact, I think in addition to driving players around this guy also makes posts to RI defending Snyder and Ceratto.

Posted by: Snyder reads RI | May 15, 2008 10:14 AM | Report abuse

Bottom line is that Cerrato was given the keys to the kingdom and he's going to put his people in positions whether they are qualified or not. Perfect example was the hiring of Palermo as defensive line coach (who has no pro experience) over Larry Brooks who had both played AND coach DL in the pros. Any surprise that Blatche said nothing about the hiring? Cerrato is a yes man and wants to be surrounded with yes men, which means people like Riddick will be let go and less qualified people hired.

Until Snyder sells the team OR realizes that Cerrato is nothing more than a glorified scout, this is what we'll be in for indefinitely. Things might not have been great under Joe Gibbs V2, but it sure beat the clown running the show now. I'm sure Gregg Williams will be having a big laugh when Jacksonville crushes us during the season.....

I am not on the skins payroll and I'm amazed at the level of bitterness JLC has towards the Redskins organization.

Dude, how can you live your life everyday with that much negativity? It's only sports !!! It's fun and all, but at the end of the day it means nothing.
