Redskins hire Malcolm Blacken and Chad Englehart as strength coaches

Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan has completed his coaching and training staffs, he said Friday at the scouting combine.

Shortly after Shanahan's comments, the Redskins announced the rehiring of Malcolm Blacken and the addition of Chad Englehart as assistant strength and conditioning coaches.

Blacken was a Redskins conditioning assistant from 1996 to 2000. For the last nine years, Blacken served as Detroit's strength and conditioning coach.

Last season, Englehart was the lead member of the strength and conditioning staff with the Florida Tuskers of the United Football League, who were coached by new Redskins defensive coordinator Jim Haslett.

I am so F-ing sick of hearing about what Shanny did with another team! Just like Portis! Neither has done S**t with THIS team! Please shut up with Sham Wow and the Super Bowls of yesteryear!

As long as he flies up past the #4 slot, that's A-OK with me, zeke.

I'm still thinking the rumor that Shanahan pursues Bradford by trading the #4 pick and Campbell to StL for the #1 pick and Bradford has something to it.

For StL, they get 2 players -- they need OL in a big way -- including a QB that can take a beating. Campbell + Okung are 2 good steps for StL with 1 pick.

For Shanahan, he gets the QB he wants (if really covets Bradford) and Snyder gets the splashy headline that eluded him with Sanchez last year.

It wouldn't surprise me if he looks at Bradford and sees his next Elway.

If you have the #4 pick and there's a QB that you think is your franchise QB..then you get him and build the line with later picks...

LOL You ever notice how people who know very little about football and not much of anything intelligent to offer always use that argument? Reading the above comment should make that quite evident!

thats funny iubiquity, I saw the same quote attributed to Bill Polian (considered the top GM in the NFL) a few weeks ago.
You dont pass on a potential franchise QB when you have the chance and the Need. And the Skins possibly have both.
The Skins certainly feel they have the Need for a new QB. Otherwise, Jason and Segal would of seen a Contract Extension by now..

Why is everyone not realizing we lost games because of big plays on defense. Everyone gets are OL is bad, but campbell with a good line does not translate neccesarily to a good offense. There were countless times ol protected and campbell did not find the open reciever. An eric berry means a dominate defense that can take us to the playoffs. If we had eric berry our defense would be able to be a raven super bowl defense. Campbell would have play role of Trent Dilfer played in the ravens superbowl win. We can then draft ol in the second round and also in free agency as well. Eric berry will have an impact like orakapo and we will be able to put laron landry at his natural position. Please fans join the eric berry bandwagon. Anyone make comments if agree or disagree?
I am not saying that its a superbowl team this comparing the possibilty of a superbowl defense.

Campbell vs AZ, 22 of 30 for 193 and 2 TDs plus 26 yards rushing -- Skins win 24-17

In this game, the Skins Defense (2008 version) was responsible for the winning margin..

The following from the news wires...

As is often the case in close games, the difference proved to be turnovers. The Redskins had two takeaways, while the Cardinals failed to force a single turnover. Washington scored 10 points off of its takeaways.

From Don Banks at SI

• Most NFL club officials I've talked to so far rave about the depth of this year's draft, and believe that teams will be very hesitant to deal away picks this year. By deduction that means that this year's unprecedented restricted free agency class won't see much action, because teams don't want to give up the necessary draft compensation.
**
I'm thinking the CBA issue that made a bunch of juniors jump into the draft are a big part of this. We had Cerrato --with the foresight to know this -- and still traded picks away

Some people just can't give any credit at all.

Campbell played a good game, threw 2 TD passes in the 2nd half that brought us back from down 17-10 to win 24-17. Portis averaged 3.2 yards per carry for 68 yards, so t wasn't Portis carrying the team. And oh yes, Campbell didn't throw an INT. Warner did. Please.

RickyR and Stump-

The draft is an absolute crap shoot. GMs like Parcells minimize the risk of picking inside the Top 10 pick because of the crippling affect that a bust can have. There are 4 players IMO that are worthy and would be impact players: Suh, Berry, Okung, & McCoy. That’s it that’s the list (kornheiser). If there was a QB worthy I would definitely consider him but I'm not willing to roll the dice on either guy with the obvious red flags of both.

Roll with JC for one more year and see if LeFevour or Snead is available in the 4th take one, If not address QB next year and let JC either walk via the 1 year tender or trade him if they sign him to a 2 year deal.

I believe if they don't get any offers at JC’s tender they should sign him to 2 year deal @ about 2 years 5 mil with a 3 mil signing bonus. That way he wouldn’t be able to walk in 2011 if he has a respectable year like he did this year and they could cut him if he underperforms. He’s an average QB that is certainly not a part of the future but needs to be treated like an asset.

As we head towards the medal games in the Sharks Olympic tournament, a quick recap.

Joe Pavelski and Joe Thorton are 2nd and 5th in face-off win %. Dany Heatley is 2nd in goals, Dan Boyle 2nd in assists. Heatley, Thornton, Boyle and Patrick Marleau all play tonight.

Haslett will make the defense marketably better. Berry would be a real playmaker and would certainly help Hall, LL, and Los. That would be a step in the right direction defensively.

The only problem is that we need 3 new OL to even be completive offensively. That’s ok, I got this…

If Okung is gone and we can’t trade back
1- Berry (Ed Reed) FS
2- Vladimir Ducasse RT/OG
4- LeFevour / Snead QB
5- Cordaro Howard OG
7- Trindon Holliday KR/PR 4.23 speed

UFAs
OG- Chester Pitts
NT- Justin Bannon
ILB- Karlos Dansby
RB- Chester Taylor

It's just your way of expressing your fears or frustration and trying to make yourself feel like you has some control in your life. Or, you may be trying to get us emotionally involved in the debate so that you'll have another conflict, or many to address.

Good try, but you've only accomplished one thing, empathy. Good luck in your quest for wisdom as the fall of your life is turning to winter.

Shanny, "I expect him to be in great shape and do everything he can to be the best player. If he does that..."

I bet it's a coin flip if Portis will be back. I'm taking tails because Portis has already shown his ass and an uncapped year is the mulligan we need to get rid of him and his contract.

Thanks for asking...

He was a walk-on at Arkansas who began his career as a tight end but made a smooth transition to the interior. Very Similar to Jason Smith the 2nd overall pick in last year’s draft. He was the anchor up front for the Hogs, Petrus is a potential second-round pick. If he was available in the 4th, I would say that there was 32 Vinny's in charge of the draft

The trick is to find the next sproles in the later rounds or FA. You don't want to pay a guy every down money when he is a 3rd down/KR/PR. The skins need to treat this offseason like there will be a cap in 2011.

I think he fits the mold size wise. I haven't seen him play though. Mike Johnson is another guy I could see us getting. I think he could be good. I've watched him play. I don't think we're allowed to discuss late round interior linemen though. I think we have to rehash the JC debate in every thread from now until the J and C keys fall off everyone's keyboard.

Posted by: TWISI | February 26, 2010 8:42 PM

I was never concerned with their height or weight.

These are my concerns..
Bradford (In order of concern): AC Joint, Fragility/Toughness, System (Spread O), Mobility, Arm strength, Not a vocal leader
Bradford Positives: Accuracy, Size (room for bulk), Release, Character

Clausen Negatives: Leadership, Athleticism, Pocket awareness, Upside
Clausen Positives: 3+ years in WCO, Arm Strength, decision making (not including chicks), Confidence, Ability to see entire field, Deals with adversity, Film/Gym rat.

I would take Clausen over Bradford but not @ #4. We have such a lack of talent that we can’t miss on a top 5 pick. A QB is a need but not at #4 and perhaps not until next year. Shanny and Allen have inherited a mess and I’m looking at 2011 as the year we are going to be competitive.

I would take LeFevour or Snead in the 4th but neither will probably be there. It's too bad Vinny still haunts us even after he is gone.

The irony of that statement is that it's going to take someone else spending Snyder's money to actually have some fiscal responsibility.

I understand your points, in fact I think the QB class next year will utimately be better at the top next year. I think Braford has more upside than Clausen, so I think he'll end up being the #1 rated QB in this draft. I don't see how Bradford slides to #4, so I think Clausen would be the guy if the Skins wanted to get a QB with that pick. However, if Okung continues to impress at the combine (interviews, drills, physique, etc), that along with his game tape will make it hard for the Skins to pass on him. He could be the least risky pick on the offensive side of the ball.

4-If you read my earlier post then you know I'd pick Berry and why I see the draft going this way..

TWISI-

You are going to see a lot of posturing by all the teams up until the draft.

Rams: recent drafts- Carriker DT, Long DE, Smith OT all high 1st rd picks. If they pass on a QB, I would be shocked although it would be a severe reach. Bradford/Clausen/Suh. This is why they are trying to move down.

Lions: There is talk of them moving Backus to OG since he is a 10 year vet and taking Okung. QB last year LT this year is my take. Still could be Suh or McCoy, because they could squeeze another year out of Backus @ LT.

Bucs: Suh, McCoy or Berry. My bet is Suh.

Skins: If it goes down Bradford, Okung, Suh…We would be staring at Clausen, McCoy, or Berry. I would pick between McCoy and Berry and choose the next Ed Reed in Berry. Rationale is that you don’t reach in the Top 10, you take impact players and Berry is either the 1st or 2nd best overall player in the draft while Clausen is somewhere between the 15-30th..

Funny to see comments comparing Tony Pike to Joe Flacco. They're pretty dissimilar. Both tall, of course, and both late risers, but Flacco came out of a lower-tier school while Pike's team was one of the nation's best. They don't seem to have much in common as passers.

Diesel44 I get that, and as far as the Skins go it holds some weight. Kyle Shanahan said so much in his interview on Redskins.com. He implied the Skins will look to draft the best possible player, not necessarily looking to draft someone to replace a player. I think McCoy is utimately be more highly rated than Berry and I would pick him over Berry.

L-S is being coy..

If you go back a few days you can read about L-S's favorite bran muffin, early bird specials @ HoJo’s, his going and growing problem, why he ruined Medicare for the rest of the curmudgeons, and how & why he is responsible for Cialis not being allowed at Seizure World.

Now THAT is some high quality jibba jabba! Sorry I missed it.

Mitch Petrus ties bench-press record
Posted by Mike Florio on February 26, 2010 6:47 PM ET
When I was in high school, I once said to one of the guys who was far too concerned about the amount of weight he could bench press that I was aware of no job application that requests that information.

He laughed. And then he threw me out a window.

More than 25 years later, I am aware of a job application that requests that information. The NFL not only wants to know how many times a guy can bench-press 225 pounds; the NFL wants to see it.

On Friday, they saw Arkansas lineman Mitch Petrus tie the Scouting Combine record (kept since 2000) with 45, according to Frank Tadych of NFL.com.

Other offensive and defensive linemen who impressed were Russell Okung of Oklahoma State with 38, Eric Olsen of Notre Dame with 35, Joe Hawley of UNLV with 35, and Maryland's Bruce Campbell with 34.

The all-time low was set nine years ago by cornerback Fred Smoot, who wobbled his elbows to a single rep. He would later find other ways to exercise the muscles of his upper body.

If Shanahan wants Bradford, he'll get Bradford, even if it means sending Jason Campbell AND Carlos Rogers to St. Louis.

Don't feel blue L-S, you're in the twilight of your of your old age. You're like that gay vampire from those teenage movies that has lived for a hundred years, is full of wisdom, the skin of angel, could have any chick he wants but chooses to fall for an annoying high school chick.

Posted by: Diesel44 | February 26, 2010 10:57 PM

I changed the fell to feel in the repost.

I'm going to repost this as the equivalent of a Cliff Tucker miracle shot to win a game and leave my hand in the air.

L-S is too old to get the reference but how funny is it for a vampire that could have any chick to fall for an annoying high school chick.

The skins need to treat this offseason like there will be a cap in 2011.

Posted by: Diesel44 | February 26, 2010 8:33 PM |

Rather than a lock-out and court fight.

The trick is to find the next sproles in the later rounds or FA. You don't want to pay a guy every down money when he is a 3rd down/KR/PR. The skins need to treat this offseason like there will be a cap in 2011.

NO WAY... GET HIM.... Look, cut ARE, he got $30 mil with $10 mil bonus... This guy can return kicks, return punts, & 3rd down back... plus if you get down in a game, you can pull #1 RB for Sproles & use him to create mismatches. I'm just saying, if your willing to have the sorry production ARE provided & he counted rediculous amount vs cap... you can afford to add Sproles.

Most of us were not willing to have ARE's sorry production, that was Vinny. Haven't you learned over the last 10 years that fantasy football doesn't work in real life?

Yep. I'm to blame, I didn't realize it was Vinny until after several posts.

The clues were all there...ignoring the OL, a ND QB, and paying a specialist like a #1 RB.

I feel stupid.

Diesell...

There is no better time than this year to draft a QB...

They'r already gonna sign Campbell, so you can afford to draft a QB high and bring him into the system. If you pass on one of the top QB's and you wait until next year when you're desperate and you've put all your eggs into the Campbell basket.

According to Todd McShay, Clausen has "small hands" which could be a concern to teams thinking about drafting him.

Wonder if he has small feet as well?

rickyr-

Why would you reach for a QB? A QB is a need but we can't afford to miss on the #4 pick. A noodle arm Bradford or a noodle head Clausen would set us back 3-5 years.

We need to nail the 4th overall pick not reach because our QB is average. Shanny's rebuild is going to take more then this offseason.

The Skins have to select an OT with the first pick. Have you guys forgotten just how bad the OL has been over the past 24 games?

They'll wait for the 5th or 7th round to pick a backup QB...

If we can find a trading partner and, move back about 13-18, and grab LT B.Campbell. That would work well.

The big word in that statement is IF. Getting someone to move up that high requires someone who thinks a player should be #1 in draft to fall to #4 to become a bargain. If Suh fell, it's possible someone would jump up to get him. More likely, if some team in need of QB has either Bradford or Clausen rated as a #1 pick, and he falls to us, someone might trade. I don't think it will happen for either Okung or Berry. So trading back is probably unlikely. I guess we have to make it known that we are willing to trade back for the right compensation. I like who we have in FO, and will be happy with their decision regarding our pick.

Whoa, Bruce Campbell ran 4.78 and 4.81 in 40. Outstanding times for OT. And he had 34 reps at bench press.

In other news, Mitch Petrus sounds like he'll make a great Skin. After doing 45 reps on bench, he pulled a hammy in the 40.

I missed the bloggery yesterday. I was out running errands, which meant I got to listen to sports radio.

Did you guys already talk about Jasno's interview by the Sports Reporters? esp. the part about how Vinny (Notre Dame alum) has been on "Team Clausen" down in Florida where he's working out ... and how Vinny and Kiper are pals (Jasno used the term "boys").

He also talked about how, after around May 1, when the contracts expire for nearly the entire player evaluation/scouting staff, there could be another shakeup. He noted that everyone seems high on Marrocco Brown, but also said that Bobby DePaul, of course, is available, as is the guy who was Carl Peterson's #2 guy in Kansas City back when KC was good.

Finally, he said that he thought that: the Skins and Rabach likely would be able to work something out (mostly b/c a decade of neglect on the line means that Rabach has hand); Campbell likely would be starting for the Skins in September; and that, after lots and lots and lots more intervening drama, in the end, Portis will not be on the Skins as of Week One.

Pardon me if I'm repeating any of this up here. I see there was a lot of blogging since the last time I was up here.

There was. You really missed it. But you're a busy man and you deserve an Executive Summary:

JC should be the QB next year!
Should not. You're an idiot!

With the #4 pick we should take a QB!
Should not. You're an idiot!
