Redskins hold 7-3 lead after a quarter

It took a while for both the Redskins and Raiders to get started Sunday afternoon, but big plays from running backs for both teams sparked scoring drives in the first quarter in Oakland.

Neither team produced much on its first drive, with the Redskins stopping Oakland with a Reed Doughty sack on third down and the Redskins unable to move the ball either, as Jason Campbell also was sacked (on second down) and hit hard on third down to force a punt.

Oakland started to drive the ball on its second drive, but a pass to Zach Miller was called back for offensive interference, Brian Orakpo sacked Bruce Gradkowski on second down, his eighth of the year, and the Raiders eventually punted again.

The Redskins again failed to move the ball and punted, but this time Oakland showed some life offensively. The yards came mostly on one play, with Gradkowski finding running back Darren McFadden for a 43-yard gain, the longest for Oakland this season. The Raiders couldn't move much more and settled for Sebastian Janikowski's 33-yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead.

The Redskins answered with the help of a big play from their own running back, Quinton Ganther, an Oakland native.

On third and 1, Campbell found Ganther on the left side, and the Redskins' newest starting running back broke tackles and got down the sideline for a 42-yard gain. Campbell looked to find Devin Thomas on the next play and he drew a penalty, and on third and eight from the 19 Campbell scrambled for 13 yards and a first down.

One play later, Campbell found Fred Davis for a six-yard touchdown that gave Washington the 7-3 lead.

Davis was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct for a dance, however, giving Oakland good field position to start its drive and a big pass to McFadden set the Raiders up deep in Redskins territory to start the second quarter.

I thought a flag was thrown only if the player used props?! I see players do a dance all the time and not get penalized.

Funny how as fans, we think any Skins team of yesteryear was great. The Skins had some putrid seasons in the 70's

Yeah, but we also got George Allen towards the end of the decade.

Posted by: rickyroge | December 13, 2009 5:20 PM | Report abuse

Love real turf. How the game ought to be played. Is that now it for Campbell? Has the inevitable happened?

Posted by: sugarstreet | December 13, 2009 5:20 PM | Report abuse

I like the in-game score break!

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | December 13, 2009 5:20 PM | Report abuse

On Campbell I am conflicted. There are two prevailing views.

1) Campbell has had to play in several different systems and has had no consistency. This year he has had a bad line but has played relatively well. He may never be a Peyton Manning or Tom Brady, but he's not the worst either. A better competent line and stability might make him good enough to get the team to the playoffs as the team develops a successor.

2) Yes Campbell has had to face an unfair situation. He has had to deal with lemons, but he has not made lemonade. In crucial games this past year he has failed to win games when it has counted. In at least two or three games, when he was in position to drive the team to win, he threw interceptions or fumbled the ball. And while that may not be totally fair, the NFL is about winning and losing. He has lost games when it has counted.

I see justifications for both sides. Frankly a lot depends on what QB's are available and what the price is in terms of money and draft picks to get them. I would rather the team address the O-Line problems before the QB position because, without a competent line, you could put Tom Brady in the position; and he would still fail.

Posted by: jiacinto | December 13, 2009 5:20 PM | Report abuse

um, F Dallas!

Posted by: RomoLongballs | December 13, 2009 5:20 PM | Report abuse

If the line doesn't start playing better, Jason Campbell is going to leave the game in a body bag.

Posted by: Thundershock | December 13, 2009 5:20 PM | Report abuse

Why the f_ck is he returning kicks he doesn't even catch the ball. He is the worst punt returner in the league.

Gano's kickoffs alone were worth getting ris of SS.

Posted by: PAskinsfan17 | December 13, 2009 5:43 PM | Report abuse

It's been a while since I've posted, nice to be back. we all roasted Danny for bringing in Sherman Lewis to call plays, but since he's done the playcalling we are scoring points. I 'm big enough to say I got it wrong, point for Danny boy. I would not be upset to see Sherm get the head coaching job after the season ends. He has had time to see our personnel and make the needed decisions needed in the offseason. I for one hope we keep JC and draft o-line and a linebacker so Orakpo can be a DE.

Cooley who?!
It's funny how the 2 WRs and the TE drafted last year who did nothing last year and the 1st half of this year, are actually playing like the high draft players the 2nd half of this season under the new offensive coordinator.
Clearly Zorn was part of the problem.
Cerrato might have been right when he said this team is a playoff team, but he still bares some responsibility for not addressing the injury prone and depleted offensive line from last year.
Ironically JC is playing better w/o an offensive line to save his life, now that the offense is more open with this new offensive coordinator. Too little too late though as JC is not the answer NOR the main problem of the Redskins.

I would have agreed if we knew for sure that none of our FS were the guy, but I'd like to see Moore continue to develop. The rest we can get in the draft with what we have IMO. Cooley is a straight up beast, we know this. 3rd rounder could be...anything.

Lets see how Jason does against a top line NFL team... Next week will be the determinant if Jason really has improved, under Sherm Lewis. Last week NO had only one day of practice and two thirds of their secondary on the bench injured.
And Oakland is..... well Oakland.
