Redskins Hold Slim Lead

After stopping the Rams on their opening possession, the Redskins put together yet another impressive drive. After starting at its own 21, Washington got a key third-and-10 completion from Campbell to Cooley for 18 yards to get into St. Louis territory, then a 24-yard throw from Campbell to Randle El that gave the Redskins first and goal from the Rams' 7.

But for the third time in as many possessions in the red zone, Washington failed to score. Portis carried twice for a total of two yards. Then, on third and goal from the 5, Coach Jim Zorn called a halfback option pass, and Portis, rolling right, overthrew Cooley in the end zone. Suisham's 23-yard field goal gave the Redskins a 9-7 lead, but the fans were not satisfied after 74-yard drive that stalled.

As the quarter ended, the Rams were moving into Washington territory, with the reality that even though the Redskins had dominated yardage and time of possession, St. Louis could take the lead with only a field goal.

Cambpell is not a leader. Take him out, at least give the Skins a chance.

Posted by: Almazar80 | September 20, 2009 3:21 PM | Report abuse

Has the offense even gone deep yet? The defense reminds me of the 2006 defense, giving up big yards on 3rd down. If they get in the red zone, go down the seam to Cooley or throw a fade route to one of the big WR's.

What the heck is JC pump faking for in his own endzone? Good grief, this team really sucks..

Posted by: ga8085 | September 20, 2009 3:21 PM | Report abuse

No, let's let JC call the plays

Posted by: frediefritz | September 20, 2009 3:22 PM | Report abuse

The play calling is poor, but JC still has a terrible of habit of believing his o-line should give him indefinite time and space - he doesn't do much to get the heck out of the way - back in the pocket.

That near safety is on him. He should have thrown it away or tucked it and run earlier than he did.

I agree MrSkins...

JC holds the ball too long. What also bothers me about this guy is that this is a CONTRACT year. If I'm JC who cares what Zorn calls if I don't think it works.

When you don't execute, go three and out, can't score within 10 yards, fall onto each other - it's because there's poison in the locker roo, the coaches do not have control of coddled, overvalued players.

Same. Old. Story.

Horrible owner.

I would have thought the dropped TD passes by Sellars and Thomas had something to do with it. Unless, of course, you believe that Zorn ordered them to drop the balls.

What the hell?! They run the ball on 3rd and 3?! What the hell was the point on going for it on 4th down? They still got to kick the FG and give the Rams plenty of time to go down the field against the secondary. Unless Zorn is planning on going for it on 4th down, the only thing he accomplished was taking some time off the clock. This is truly pathetic..

The skins controlled the ball, and I think called the game that way. The problem is with that style, they need to be nearly perfect in the redzone. It's early there were positives on both side of the ball, but lots to work on, particularly on offense.

----

It says that this is a team that is asleep through the first quarter or first two quarters. Assesses what the other team is doing and then and only then either plays down to or tries to play up to their level.

They have no - NONE - agenda of their own.

They are sluggish.

And they don't care.

let's hope this team has some foresight and at the very least demotes zorn for the next game. and salvage the season.

talent_evaluator- and you are a moron. you seem to be the only one happy after this. You are not a Redskins fan if you are satisfied with this...

I think Zorn has lost this locker room...even after the win...

Zorn will be fired.

B Mitch is BLASTING JZ. He's saying JZ play calling is the problem.

Wow, I've never been so depressed about a win.

Z-man, ever heard of a fade route?

a W is a W. and they moved the ball. kelly caught some balls. moss caught some balls. if they can get redzone offense up, they could score some points.

Every Redskins fan is happy after a win. It's the Dallas fans that aren't happy when we win.

Go B MITCH!.. Tell them MF's the truth

Posted by: cocodc1 | September 20, 2009 3:59 PM | Report abuse

Well, that was a performance. How do you turn a 28-0 whipping into a 9-7 poohfest?

JC hurts his ankle.
The reffing was... well, let's call it uneven.
My fiesta trio goal came true.( >4 catches)
Haynesworth is good.
Orapko did some nice things late, still not a major enough factor. I want more from him.

As for Zorn, when your ST coach is coaching you up on "don't call the early timeout" on the first 4th down, along with all the other questions, I just dunno.

It says that you play them one week at a time.

Yeah...a one field goal at a time ....right

Malcom Kelley is 6'4 and three times down there today and we never through it up to him did we?
Or am I forgetting it?

Posted by: RedskinRay1 | September 20, 2009 4:01 PM | Report abuse

Wow, the skins offense averaged over 7 yards per play between the 20 yard lines. Once/if they get the redzone offense clicks, we might something. To be fair, there were two dropped TD passes, but I don't like having first and goal and the first play is a run to the left.

What channel's b-mitch on??

Posted by: sugarstreet | September 20, 2009 4:03 PM | Report abuse

RedskinsRay...

You nailed my point. We can blame Cerrato for drafting the young WR's all we want, but Zorn doesn't trust them and won't throw to them in the red zone.

Just woke and its time for work, See its more of the same "bad play calling ", we need and offensive Genius to make some smarter play calls, yes it was a win ,but just but there skins of there frail little teeth. as expected "just enough point to get by for this underachiving team being dragged down by pathetic play calling"

Posted by: ThrowItToMyTeam | September 20, 2009 4:10 PM | Report abuse

Did anyone notice Danny Smith advise JZ to call time out, then have to restrain JZ to call the t/o @ the approiate moment. JZ looked frazzled!
