Redskins Lead after 1 on Portis TD

The game couldn't have started in better fashion for the Redskins. On Carolina's first play from scrimmage, defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth broke through the left side of the Carolina line and changed the direction of Panthers tailback DeAngelo Williams. When Williams was hit by defensive end Andre Carter and tackle Kedric Golston, he fumbled, and Haynesworth recovered at the Carolina 13.

On Washington's second play from scrimmage, quarterback Jason Campbell felt some pressure, but found running back Clinton Portis in the right flat. Portis scored easily, a 10-yard pass that was the Redskins' first first quarter touchdown of the season, and the Redskins led 7-0.

But on that same play, left tackle Chris Samuels suffered a stinger in his shoulder. On the Redskins' next possession, Samuels's replacement -- D'Anthony Batistse, who hadn't played in a game since 2007 with Atlanta -- was beaten badly by Carolina defensive end Everette Brown, who sacked Campbell and forced a fumble. The Redskins recovered, but Samuels's absence was felt immediately.

Overall in the quarter, Campbell was sacked three times, and the Redskins never got anything going after the opening drive. Samuels was not taken to the locker room, but remained on the bench, and Batiste finished the quarter. Haynesworth was also taken out of the game after kneeling near midfield, and has not returned.

By passing on 3rd down.

O line issues are exaggerated, although they are only average. JC has to throw it AWAY!

Posted by: rickyroge | October 11, 2009 1:49 PM

The O-line SUCKS, AND JC has to throw it away. Don't let your dislike for JC blind you to the fact that this O-line is way below average. There are 2 guys in there who haven't played an NFL game in 2 years.

for those that can't see it...the call on the field was no touchdown, the FB fumbled and the tight end recovered in the endzone, so it the skins ball. carolina challenged it.

Posted by: nami322 | October 11, 2009 1:59 PM | Report abuse

rachel, why are you arguing with me when I already agreed with you?

JC needs to throw it. And the O-line blows. Those are not contradictory statements.

Posted by: Alan4 | October 11, 2009 1:59 PM | Report abuse

Skins need to start going into max protect on passing downs or doing quick slants. Moss needs to get the ball

Posted by: chrislarry | October 11, 2009 2:04 PM | Report abuse

I mean, you got a yard and a half on the sneak to get it out to your 3 yrd line, why not run wide out of the end zone? Seriously, I think Zorn just isn't a very bright person. Limited, even.

Posted by: stevie_in_gp | October 11, 2009 2:04 PM | Report abuse

I'm done with Portis. You could see a safety coming from a mile away with the way this O-line is playing and with Portis' inability to hit a hole up the middle with any energy.

Dangit!!!!!!!!!1

Posted by: rickyroge | October 11, 2009 2:04 PM | Report abuse

Run right. Run left. Anybody ever point out to Zorn sometimes the best direction is just straight ahead?! Too bad Danny and Vinny have ignored the O-line...a quick slant would have been nice.

Posted by: zjfr2 | October 11, 2009 2:05 PM | Report abuse

yeah, but look at the blocking. Heyers got blown up and Sellers was looking like he was trying to block on a stretch play. Who was he looking to block?

Posted by: gringoinmiami | October 11, 2009 2:05 PM | Report abuse

Every D in the league knows Zorn is scared to pass out of his own endzone. He never suprises anyone.

Why are they running a sideline stretch play from their 3 yard linee

Posted by: chrislarry | October 11, 2009 2:04 PM | Report abuse
Zorn thought it was the other goal line.

Posted by: alex35332 | October 11, 2009 2:05 PM | Report abuse

But on the other hand, you should run a dive play vice off tackle from the 2.

Sellers sucks. Any questions?

Posted by: rachel216 | October 11, 2009 2:05 PM | Report abuse

Portis had an earlier seam up the middle, and he should've taken it even though it was being filled. Better to lose a yard than give up a safety. Equal parts blame to go around. First for the play call, then for the blocking, then for not busting it up the middle.

Posted by: CDon | October 11, 2009 2:06 PM | Report abuse

Finally the godd*amn game is back. Now I can finally go back to ranting about our shortcomings.

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | October 11, 2009 2:06 PM | Report abuse

Zorn...even though it's called footbal...you can throw it.

Posted by: rickyroge | October 11, 2009 2:06 PM | Report abuse

No blocking from Sellers and the O-line...not Portis' fault there.

Posted by: svxcountry1 | October 11, 2009 2:06 PM | Report abuse

Good coverage on the punt.

The thing that I'm most sick of from the Zorn-era 'Skins is watching offensive plays where the ball carrier (back or receiver) has to break a tackle TO GET TO THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE! Drives me mental! The safety was just another example of it.

Throw the ball long. Just one time? Pleae?

@svxcountry1

Definitely part of the blame belongs to Portis. He continued stretching it out instead of taking the seam that was available up the middle. Know where you are on the field and bail out.

Great defense. 4 runs inside the 5 and NADA.

Offense gives up points, and gives the ball back to Carolina.

But that won't stop the morons from claiming the defense "can't get off the field."

Posted by: MrRedskin21 | October 11, 2009 2:09 PM | Report abuse

Yeah our blocking sucks. Carolina got excellent penetration on that safety. I mean, come on people, our already terrible and injured O-Line is working without several starters.

And just to add, Sellars is way over rated. His "skill" is in being a huge guy who looks the part of a great fullback. But the results are soooo lacking. That safety wasn't on CP - bad call by Zorn, and terrible execution by line/Sellars!

Posted by: cocodc1 | October 11, 2009 2:10 PM | Report abuse

Props to the defense today. That's for sure. Offense needs to bail them out a little bit and hold onto the ball for some extended time. It would be nice if the Skins could put together a five-minute drive here and keep the defense off for the rest of the half at least. Give them a break.

McNabb is lighting it up in his first game back.

Skins were 4 point dogs going into this game, and most "experts" picking the Panthers.

Up 10-2, I'm pretty optimistic about this team still.

But the O-line MUST be addressed in a big way.

N?

N????

(I'm so close . . .)

D is pitching a shut out on their side of the ball. If the skins put up another TD and can control the 2nd half TOP I think they have a good shot.

We're a really boring team to watch though..

Ha ha! Are you sure? I mean, I've been having heart attacks because we can't score and the games are always close.

I guess its not the type of excitement you're talking about.

halftime...opportunity to look at scores around the league, and what do we see...decent teams are manhandling teams we struggled with (rams) or lost to (lions).

MyPostIDisAfake- By exciting I mean throwing 50 yard bombs for touchdowns.

Jimmy Johnson is an idiot. I would like to hold him down and shave his head.

It must've been a Comcast problem. I have Time-Warner down here in North Carolina, and my FOX feed never went out. Although I did have issues with the feed last week when I lost HD for about a quarter.

satellite tv had issues with it as well

Not a bad half. Of course, Samuels' injury I think affected the play calling but that said I liked their last drive of the half.

rachel216 - We had two of those in the last two weeks.

I would say boring in the sense that we don't score more than 17 points. 28 points would be considered an "outburst".

JC has had a solid half. Currently has a 124.2 rating.

Good hands and good return by D Hall. May not be the best cover man , but he can catch !

I will say it again keep Orakpo at DE and move Daniels at Tackle

I will say it again keep Orakpo at DE and move Daniels at Tackle. I would rather take my chances of him stopping the run instead of covering a TE.
