Redskins lead by 10 after 1 quarter

There was a dominant defense and a dominant offense on display in the opening quarter, but they belonged to the Washington Redskins -- not the 11-0 New Orleans Saints.

The Redskins burst out to a 10-0 lead after one quarter on a Fred Davis touchdown catch and a Shaun Suisham field goal. Time will tell what the early start means for the Redskins. The Saints have trailed early now in six of their past seven games. The lone exception was their St. Louis win, which was a 7-7 tie at half.

The Redskins finished the opening quarter with 10 first downs; the Saints had only 3. Washington also had 104 yards of total offense, compared with New Orleans' 55.
The Saints' prolific offense managed a first down on their first offensive play of the game -- but then did get another until only 2 minutes, 15 seconds remained in the quarter.

The Redskins' benefited from a pair of penalty flags on their first drive. A personal foul penalty against the Saints and a defensive pass interference flag moved the Redskins 47 yards downfield and put Washington in striking distance early. Jason Campbell hit Davis for an 8-yard touchdown to put the Redskins on the scoreboard first.

Washington's defense posted a second big stop and the Redskins again marched down the field, settling for a 32-yard Suisham field goal this time.

While many teams have taken advantage of the Redskins' rush defense, New Orleans has had no such league early on. Defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth returned to the starting lineup after a two-game absense due to injury and seems to be helping significantly early on. Through one quarter, the Saints have minus-1 total yards on the ground. The Redskins' meanwhile got 20 yards out of Rock Cartwright and 13 out of Quinton Ganther.

Davis finished the quarter with 44 yards on four catches, and Campbell was 7-of-11 passing for 71 yards. New Orleans' Drew Brees was 6-of-6 for 56 yards.

A 16-0 NO team would be nice but 15-1 with the 1 being big red would be more nicer

Posted by: alex35332 | December 6, 2009 1:53 PM | Report abuse

well, it's clear our D has come to play today, but Blache needs to grow a pair and start blitzing from different angles. we can have all the coverage we want, but if we dont get to Brees QUICKLY he will pick apart our secondary.

Brees looks way too comfortable, and NEVER looks to his weak side in fear of pressure. we need to knock him down a few times to let him know this ain't gonna be another Miami situation.

Okay, everyone keep in mind that Cindy is reading the posts carefully. The six best will be in the print edition tomorrow and the writers will get a check for $100.

At least, that's how I understand it. I've never gotten a check because my posts have never made the print edition. I know because I'm the only one up here who actually subscribes to the print edition.

If none of my posts are in there tomorrow, then no one up here will be a subscriber.

TRADE OR CUT these players after the season:
Jason Campbell is nothing but a 2nd stringer QB. How many 4th comeback has he engineered? It is well publicized also he is up and down as a QB, and is very erratic with his short throws.
I understand he is a free agent after the season, then let him go because even if you re-sign him he is clearly not the answer at QB.
Cooley may have a big contract, but he is probably the only player the Skins can get some high value draft pick for. You can't keep Davis on the bench next season, and his contract is smaller and not to mention also he is younger than Cooley.
Clinton Portis's career may be over. He does have a big contract and if you can't renegotiate it then cut him outright. Save a few million or two in the process.
Carlos Roger is gone anyway. Thank god. The guy was without a doubt the weakest link on the defense this year.
Randel El can't return punts any more, and surely we can find someone else to be the 3rd receiver.
As for the Coaching, Zorn is gone. I don't oppose hiring a GM and letting him hire a head coach who in turn can keep both Sherman as offensive coordinators. Hiring the offensive consultant has proven without a doubt that the problem was Zorn as clearly the Skins are better offensively so far.
They are still losing because Zorn takes over the 2 minutes offensive play-calling and because JC can't engineered any sort of comebacks like the backup QB he is.

jeanjak,

nothing you say is possible unless there is an uncapped year. if the Skins cut/trade ARE, Portis, and Cooley, they'll have enough cap room to field a bunch of high school players, and nothing more. lets keep in mind that even if you trade players, their salary for the following year is not move-able.

Posted by: JeanJak | December 6, 2009 2:21 PM | Report abuse

PAskinsfan17,

agree with you 100%.

in the bottom of my heart, I STILL BELIEVE in jason campbell. maybe i like JC the person more than the Player, but I honestly believe that he's a top 12 QB with a NFL-caliber offensive line.

Posted by: kman2 | December 6, 2009 2:22 PM | Report abuse

I wrote this post earlier this week. Here's my two cents on Jason Campbell:
.
.
.
The fact that Snyder and Cerrato tried to sign Cutler illustrates how unqualified this front office is. The Bears have arguably the worst offensive line and are dead last in total rushing yards while ours is just as bad as it has given up the 3rd most sacks in the league. Behind a terrible offensive line, Cutler has thrown 20 INTs, the most in the league, and he simply fails to protect the ball and make good decisions.

Despite non-stop blitzes both off and on the field, Jason Campbell has displayed his maturity, dedication, and toughness. Fair weather fans and couch potato football experts fail to realize how fortunate we are in having a quarterback that has dealt with the situation in the manner that Jason has. He has not allowed such conspicuous opposition from the front office affect his relationship with the organization, teammates, and fans. Every week he plays to the best of his ability, and he never withholds effort even in the face of an essentially lost season. The Week 6 benching tested his character, and we have seen in the following five weeks that it is one to be highly regarded.

Most people say that Jason will not be a Hall of Fame quarterback, and they probably are right; however, most people fail to realize that in the NFL's 89 year history, only 31 quarterbacks have been inducted, and I can guarantee only three other great names that will be in Canton: Brady, Favre, and Manning (Brees could be in here too, but he needs a few more big years and a silver football to affirm that). If fans honestly believe Hall of Fame quarterbacks are churned out as easily as a Twinkie in a Hostess factory, then they simply do not understand the game of football. Good teams only need a quality quarterback that can lead an offense. The fact of the matter is, the Redskins are not a good team. Joe Theismann, Doug Williams, and Mark Rypien were not Hall of Fame quarterbacks, but they were quality quarterbacks. Super Bowl winners Trent Dilfer and Brad Johnson, who had his second best statistical year with the 1999 NFC East champion Redskins, were quality quarterbacks. Most importantly, they were on good teams. With the right tools, Jason Campbell can be the perfect leader for a top-tier offense. He possesses the arm to be a deep threat, and the legs to be an effective scrambler. Place him behind a healthy offensive line and in front of a running back that actually practices, Jason Campbell is quarterback that wins games.

The City of Washington can expect to see the last of its five-year "love affair" with Jason Campbell in person on December 27. Dan Snyder will send off this wasted opportunity to finally find a franchise quarterback, something this organization has not had in almost 25 years.

thomas, kelly and davis have been contributing so much.

Posted by: rachel216 | December 6, 2009 2:21 PM

True about Thomas and Davis. Not so much about Kelly, yet. The real reason, though, is not Sherman Lewis. It's because Cooley got IRed and James Thrash retired.

Posted by: League-Source | December 6, 2009 2:24 PM | Report abuse

This D has a tendency to relax after a Skins score. Time to step up and go into half w/a 7 point lead. Plus Skins get the ball to start the 2nd half.

Go D!

Posted by: Curzon417 | December 6, 2009 2:24 PM | Report abuse

hopefully Sherm Lewis over-rides Zorn and keeps up the assault.. A small lead and going "Zorn" conservative, will lose the game against the Saints number one offense.

Refs blew the call

Posted by: Diesel44 | December 6, 2009 2:38 PM | Report abuse

Saints have gotten beyond lucky, with the fumble on the punt and now this.

Posted by: zcezcest1 | December 6, 2009 2:39 PM | Report abuse

This is laughable.....just gift wrap it next time Moore..IDIOT

Posted by: JCB9 | December 6, 2009 2:39 PM | Report abuse

F'n up a wet dream ....

Posted by: ThrowItToMyTeam | December 6, 2009 2:39 PM | Report abuse

That is a momentum changer. Skins better come out and ball in the second half.

Posted by: Curzon417 | December 6, 2009 2:40 PM | Report abuse

Why'd we take a timeout? Under two minutes means reviews are done upstairs, no way for Zorn to waste a timeout there. And according to ESPN Gamecast, Zorn is taking a timeout before the extra point, wtf?

Posted by: JesusFreakKaren | December 6, 2009 2:40 PM | Report abuse

c'mon devin11, let's come right back with one!

Posted by: RomoLongballs | December 6, 2009 2:40 PM | Report abuse

Why the hell did Zorn just take their last TO there? There's 22 seconds left on the clock. Ugh!

Posted by: ga8085 | December 6, 2009 2:40 PM | Report abuse

That call was a f*ckin' joke.

That drive; great D, Special Teams mix-up, a freak TD against them - that's all Redskins.

Posted by: stevebeagrie | December 6, 2009 2:41 PM | Report abuse

"Oh come on guys, you have to appreciate the absurdity."

That was a hella sequence..DON'T FUMBLE!!

Posted by: frak | December 6, 2009 2:41 PM | Report abuse

This game is as predictable as the Cowboys and Eagles game. The skins will lose by 7 points, that last TD being the defference

Posted by: kingpenn1 | December 6, 2009 2:41 PM | Report abuse

good move by zorn doing his customary wasting of a time out in the end of the first half rather then in the 2nd half.

Posted by: alex35332 | December 6, 2009 2:41 PM | Report abuse

Unless your #23, just bat the ball down....Freaking idiot

Posted by: Diesel44 | December 6, 2009 2:42 PM | Report abuse

You know, football is a funny game.

Posted by: farstriker | December 6, 2009 2:42 PM | Report abuse

why do bad things always happen to us? it's hard to stop the saints from scoring tds and they get a lucky td. that was stupiddddddddd

Posted by: rachel216 | December 6, 2009 2:43 PM | Report abuse

Honestly guys, we can't be disappointed by this despite the BS by Kareem Moore. We are 3-8 and for the most part outplaying an 11-0 team.

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | December 6, 2009 2:43 PM | Report abuse

No - you get the INT and fall on your face.

Posted by: JesusFreakKaren | December 6, 2009 2:43 PM | Report abuse

Um why don't I at least get a point or two on my fantasy roster for Meachems TD. I GOT DOUBLE SCREWED!

The DB are F'n up every which way Thety can, must be some kind of record......

Posted by: ThrowItToMyTeam | December 6, 2009 2:44 PM | Report abuse

Gregg Willams is going to "bring it" to JC in the second half.. He knows Campbell loses his mechanics when he panics (no progressions and one read).
Could be an ugly ending.

Posted by: SkinsneedaGM | December 6, 2009 2:44 PM | Report abuse

GWilliams has gained some serious weight....I guess it's all that good eatin' in New Awlens

Posted by: JCB9 | December 6, 2009 2:44 PM | Report abuse

I keep forgetting Horton was IRed this year as well as the all the others. We seem to have a glut of competent strong safeties, trade possibilities? Keep Doughty for sure, as pleasantly surprising as it sounds.

Posted by: RomoLongballs | December 6, 2009 2:44 PM | Report abuse

God hates the Redskins.

And the Saints are clearly a team of destiny.

That is all.

Posted by: ThisGuy | December 6, 2009 2:45 PM | Report abuse

if i'm Jason campbell, i start cursing in the locker room and make it clear to everyone that we're gonna score TDS EVERY SINGLE TIME WE GET THE BALL. there's absolutely NO WAY this crappya$$ saints D can stop our Offense if we play to our potential.

I mean funny as in 'stab my eyes with a shishkebob' funny.

You know, that kind of funny.

Redskins funny.

Posted by: farstriker | December 6, 2009 2:46 PM | Report abuse

That I can agree with.

Posted by: Curzon417 | December 6, 2009 2:48 PM | Report abuse

Bad breaks or not, this is what this team should be looking like. Too bad it's too late.

And Williams didn't "know this" in the first half? You Campbell haters crack me up!

Posted by: Alan4 | December 6, 2009 2:49 PM | Report abuse

How about Brees stiff arming 99 before 41 turned a great play into a great play for the saints.

You can't fix dumb and this team makes ridiculously dumb plays week after week.

Posted by: Diesel44 | December 6, 2009 2:53 PM | Report abuse

"And Williams didn't "know this" in the first half? You Campbell haters crack me up!"

Nope, he often would bring the heat in the second half against teams..Particularly if the o-line is damaged...Granted, Campbell is playing well, though..Bad jou-jou the Voodoo Saints bringin', I bet..

Posted by: frak | December 6, 2009 2:54 PM | Report abuse

My 2 cents and then some on JC:

1) One can make an argument that part of JC's problem last season and the 1st part of this season is the fact that not even JZ believe in him. JZ's play calling was too conservative b/c he must have realized JC's limitations as a QB.

2) With somewhat decent OLs, and with decent protection JC was missing OPEN receivers. #11 and #12 were just that, players who were drafted in the 1st round who were without any catches. The excuses that was given was they could not get open.

3) With Sherman Lewis as a consultant to the offense, and with barely any protection JC seems to now find open receivers. If without any time, JC is now finding receivers #11 and #12 to throw the ball to, did Sherman Lewis suddenly coached these guys how to get open to?

3) Even if you can somehow put the blame on JZ for being too conservative with his play calling with JC, especially since the play calling now seems to be a lot more open, if the Skins are behind, and they have lost quite a few games last year and this year by 6 points or less, games in which they are still very competitive until the very end, JC has not been able to engineered any sort of comeback at all with the game on the line.

4) It is true the Skins have won 2 Super Bowls in the last 20 years with average QBs who are probably less talented than JC, the fact still remains that when given a chance to prove his critics wrong by being able to engineer a last minute 4th quarter comebacks, he fails miserably.

This must be some Kinda old school Vodoo. No way this freaky stuff is happening to our Skins, Really ?

Posted by: ThrowItToMyTeam | December 6, 2009 2:55 PM | Report abuse

Looked like the ball hit the ground to me.

No INT, no fumble, no TD.

Posted by: edvar | December 6, 2009 2:56 PM | Report abuse

The reality is that the Skins from Snyder, Cerrato, JZ, and JC are all losers.
Losers find way to lose, and winners find ways to win.
It just seem that every games the Skins are going to new lengths to find a way to lose. This last TD by New Orleans is the perfect example.

Posted by: JeanJak | December 6, 2009 2:57 PM | Report abuse

I hope we can get Rock going in the 2nd half.

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | December 6, 2009 2:58 PM | Report abuse

hope I am wrong.. but, 3-8 pretty much speaks for itself regarding JC.

And Williams knows Campbell better than any other coach on either side of the field.

And by the way, Alan4, why is it if anyone is critical of Campbell, they are immediately labeled a "Hater" as opposed to criticism of any other Redskin player or Coach??? Ie.. the millions of negative postings on Zorn...but, you dont hear "you're a Zorn Hater" response...
++++++++++++++++++++++++

Posted by: League-Source | December 6, 2009 2:59 PM | Report abuse

JeanJak, the Skins have had little or no consistent running game since halfway through last year. That point must be made in any serious analysis of the offense.
