Redskins Lose a Stunner to Panthers

A team in disarray returns to Washington with an array of new problems. The Panthers picked their first win of the season, beating the Redskins 20-17 Sunday at Bank of America Stadium.

The Redskins lost left tackle Chris Samuels, a six-time Pro Bowler, whose status for next week was not immediately certain; their offense totaled just 198 yards; quarterback Jason Campbell was sacked five times; and the officiating crew did the Redskins few favors.

In fact, the game spun on a controversial call midway through the fourth quarter, with the Redskins holding onto a 17-12 lead. (In the opening minute of the final quarter, John Kasay connected on a 43-yard field goal to cut the Redskins lead to just five.)

On a Panthers' punt, the Redskins' returner Antwaan Randle El signaled for a fair catch but he never had a chance at the ball. A teammate was shoved into Randle El, and the ball bounced off the foot of Washington's Brian Westbrook. The Panthers recovered and after a couple of long meetings among the officiating crew - and a Redskins' challenge -- the call on the field stood, and Carolina took over on the Redskins' 12-yard line.

Two plays later, running back Jonathan Stewart ran eight yards into the end zone for the god-ahead touchdown. The two-point conversion - Jake Delhomme to Steve Smith - gave Carolina the 20-17 lead.

Campbell finished the game 16-of-25 passing for 181 yards and a touchdown. He had a passer rating of 104.4 and was sacked five times.

Portis led the Redskins on the ground, tallying 57 yards on 19 carries and his first rushing touchdown of the season.

Entering Sunday's matchup, tight end Chris Cooley had caught a pass in 75 straight games. That streak ended Sunday. Washington's top receivers on the day were: Santana Moss (4 catches, 44 yards), Randle El (3-28), Fred Davis (3-23) and Devin Thomas (3-19).

On defense, Andre Carter played a role in three sacks, Brian Orakpo also had a sack for the third straight game, DeAngelo Hall had an interception for the second straight week and Carter, LaRon Landry and Kedric Golston were all credited with forced fumbles.

Really, the only good that could come out of this season is if Vinny is fired. He is the GM now, the decision maker in the front office. And if this is the product he's putting on the field, I'm not sure how he keeps a job. This is Matt Millen-esque, and it's scary to think that Vinny could keep his job for as long as Millen did.

The Redskins should protest this game to overturn the result. There is no way that call on the punt return fumble should be made. Perhaps now teams should have a strategy of blocking blockers into the punt returner while they are doing a fair catch. That's a bogus strategy that has no place in the game and the NFL should be completely embarassed about it but their silly pride in having a policy of not overturning a game result will get in the way. If the current rule allows this to be a fumble, it will be changed in the offseason because it is completely absurd from a fair competition standpoint.

If the NFL doesn't overturn this call, it's a bad joke. This is one of the worse calls I have ever seen. The fact that they reviewed it and made the same call makes it even worse

If I was Snyder, I would smack Cerrato everytime JC got sacked. I have promised myself I will not follow this team next week against KC. It's just not worth it..and I don't really care if Dallas loses, cause they'll still end up with a better record then the Skins. Fire Zorn!

Been saying since the offseason, that we'd lose Chris Samuels to an injury somewhere from Week 4-6.

If you thought things were bad before, just sit back and watch a tackle rotation of Heyer, BMW and Batiste in action...

I think today was a breaking point for my support of Zorn.
his game management is way too poor. and i honestly don't blame him. he would have been a good coordinator. i dont think he dedicates enough time during the week to game-plan for the upcoming team. he's too busy dealing with "new set of eyes" being hired, player quarrels, media fire, and the unbelieveably high set of standards that previous hires/fires have set for him. it's clear that this isn't working. I think west coast scheme isn't suitable for an o-line that cannot pass-block, and a QB that is too scared to try and make plays, especially when he has a 15 point lead.

Posted by: vjr9r | October 11, 2009 4:17 PM | Report abuse

It clearly was.

Your own team blockers are supposed to get the heck out of the way so that you can have your nice little halo of protection.

Westbrook screwed up and got too close and the Panther player made a heads up play to block him back into ARE.

When Zorn gets fired at some point this week (maybe today??), I hope Danny Smith gets sent packing - 2 incompetent special teams plays led to both Carolina TDs.

Please ask Zorn, who are they going to bring in to fix this o-line!

Posted by: alex35332 | October 11, 2009 4:23 PM | Report abuse

Blaming JC and Zorn is short-sighted.

This team has been mediocre for the better part of 20 years under a half dozen coaches and numerous QBs.

Tony Dungy is right.

Apart from how pulling together after the Sean Taylor (RIP) tragedy, the culture of this team is not good. That was the main reason I wanted to see Grilliams take over as HC, to maintain the unity we glimpsed for that moment.

Things are dangerously Raider-esque here now.

can someone please explain the rules to a fair catch!! Not one ref caught that? So it's legal to push a player into the returner?

Posted by: billdoug71 | October 11, 2009 4:23 PM | Report abuse

Let's hope for an uncapped year. This would be perfect for the Skins to just blow and I mean atomic blow the whole thing to smithereens. If Snyder is serious about this, he unloads everyone and keeps his draft picks. That's the only way to bring this team back. People may hate him for it because this team will stink for a couple of years but they need to do this because it's the only way this team will be able to compete in the next 5 years.

messykat..
you completely misunderstood.. No salary cap and a franchise like the Redskins with unlimited funds as the richest franchise in the NFL, will ATTRACT THE BEST COACHES.

Why would a top tier Head Coach want to coach a team that has limited funds.. Ie. a small market team like KC? Most likely this is why Shanny, Holmgren, Cowher, Gruden, Billick, etc. have not committed to a new team in 09.. They are waiting to see if 2010 is uncapped. And if so, Snyder and Jerry Jones will most likely have their pick of those former Head Coaches.
+++++++++++++++++

SkinsNeedaGM, the salary cap has nothing to do with coaches and front office personnel. It's just for players.

The offensive line is non-existent. JC was harassed all day long; he was sacked four times. They gave up a safety. Chris Samuels was injured. We had no tackles this game with Samuels and Thomas out. Our O-Line was terrible since the beginning of the season, but there is no hope when an already bad O-Line loses its starters.

What are your thoughts on the 4th & three call? I couldn't believe Zorn was going for it after what has preceded it this season. Even a punt out of the end zone would have pushed them back 20 yards and that would have forced Carolina to punt instead of getting that field goal and momentum.

Redskins= "Slump busters"

Posted by: 1965skinsfan | October 11, 2009 4:33 PM | Report abuse

Same Pattern as follows:

1st half, if not series or quater, Campbell fumbles and or int.

May or may not score a TD, may or may not score a FG,but intstead yeild 2 points to go with score, so handicap is yet again there.

execution is ok,but suddenly coach gets a brain frt and starts calling numbers of players who have proven to be a let down, at crucial moments of game. Not once does he do this but about 4 times. The biggest one, is WESTBROOOk at PR!!!! Unless ARE is hurt, or D. Thomas is not available, you don't do that at all!

I see where he gave up on KELLY, and went with Thomas, instead of Yoder, Cooley, hitting more Betts from backfield. The point is, at least go with people who are touching the ball more and if you go with receiving, go with the best hands for receiving. Thomas is ok for PR/KOR, but not really as a receiver and after DAVIS shorts me on two 3rd down conversions, I sit him, not put him in the one the MOST CRUCIAL parts of the game.

Coaching gets a D. Team gets a B because the O was executing with or without JC and the D was keeping Carolina's O under 14 points, its avg which is better than most, in the league!

ST before Westbrook gets a C, because they yeilded a big return. The D is got very little help from the O and ST today, for the most part. Even though Portis scored 12 points, it is a minus 2 on his part and the OLINE for allowing penetration in a "NOT AN OPTION" moment.

We need an NFL dork up here to quote the rule.

But my understanding is that the guys on the coverage unit are allowed to engage the blockers downfield. The halo of protection does not apply to the returner's own teammate. So long as the blockers were engaged and the Carolina players themselves didn't violate the "halo", it's fair game.

The D was solid. They forced turnovers, got to the QB and bottled up the run for the most part.

They held on 4th and goal.

Carolina's 2 TDs came on short fields due to special teams gaffes: long KR by Moore and muffed punt by ARE/Westbrook.

I don't blame this loss on Zorn, Campbell, or any of the players. Dan Snyder can stand front and center along with his friend,(not GM) V.Cerrato and accept complete blame for this loss and the atrocious state the Redskins are now in.

Any moron with the slightest bit of football sense would know the only way to construct a successful football team would be from the lines out. Our offensive line was depleted today with the loss of Samuels(best offensive lineman) and it showed.

Chris Cooley was rendered ineffective because Bastiste was clearly out of his league against the Panthers DE's, Cooley had to remain on the line to block. Mike Sellars ran laterally all day instead of busting straight ahead and knocking someones block off.

We lost because of ineffective Oline play.
We had no offense today other than the short fields because of turnovers.

We have an ineffective Oline because of the stupid decesions of Daniel Snyder and his good friend and yes man, Vinny Cerrato, the blame lies on them.Plain and simple.

You can fire Zorn, bench Campbell, do this, do that, bring in Sherman Lewis, or whatever, but until this egomaniac, selfish, stubborn, coward of an owner changes his strategy, this team will continue to be the losing joke that it has now become.

I've watched this type of play and result for ten years. I've used all of my 'surprise' and I'm running very low on 'disappointment'. Jimmy Johnson is right, a complete overhall is needed and badly. Losing with a totally reconstructed squad is better than what we've suffered through and continue to suffer with.

Pfunk, the Panther's outstretched hand that was pushing Westbrook into El was about 3 inches from El's jersey when the ball was nearly there, well within the halo.

The D was solid. They forced turnovers, got to the QB and bottled up the run for the most part.

no u can't "block" a gunner into a guy that has called a fair catch. the ref's missed that call, but gave the skins tha ball. fox complained and the refs gave it back to carolina. zorn challenged hoping somebody would do the right thing, but the refs can't call a penalty after replay, so they decided to set a new precedant, allowing defensive players to "block" offensive players into a man making a fair catch.

i beg the question, who does the punt coverage gunner have to "block" ? isn't he trying to make a tackle. the only reason he would decide not to attempt to hit the return man, and instead push byron westbrook would be to interfere with the fair catch. since when did defenders start blocking?

Who cares if they get to the playoffs, this team will not get any where any way. By the way, what is the obsession by the Redskins with drafting the weaker siblings like Westbrook and Morris? Westbrook's bone head play today cost them the game today! However, that has got to be an illegal block by the kicking team!

Well, while they can't overturn it after a game, they did in fact blow that call. The rule states that:

"If he is pushed or blocked into a kick by an opponent, he is NOT considered to have touched the ball (3-14-3-Notes)."

Therefore the ball bouncing off of Westbrook should've been irrelevant. Yet another horrible call by the NFL's "officials".

I don't understand how they could then look at the play again and still rule it in Carolina's favor. If you're a NFL referee and you don't know the rules then you're just a jackass in zebra's clothing.

The Redskins gave away a game they should won. Losing teams find ways to lose. After leading at half time, they looked like they started playing not to lose, instead of playing to win. They seemed to lose their edge at halftime. Lots of little mistakes during the second half. It was as if we were watching the entire season unraveling as momentum shifted. Very depressing.

Whose fault is it when special teams errors lead to 2 touchdowns, a receiver doesn't know where the 1st down marker is, a defender can't tackle the quarterback, etc? Is it the players, coaches, management, the owner, or all of the above?

What good is an early season coaching change going to do? Mr. Snyder will satisfy his sadistic blood lust, but it won't do anything to make the team better. The team just isn't very good as currently constructed -- their young players lost focus at the key part of the game, which is exactly what losing teams do. How will a coaching change improve how the young players focus?

Bring back Charley Casserly. Is Bobby Beathard still around? Hire him! The Skins need a competent GM.

Gruden would actually make sense b/c it's west coast offense so there'd be continuity. On the other hand, if the Skins are sticking with Campbell (and at this pt I cannot see why), is the wc off really the answer?

Instead of the just recently fired HCs, how about someone with experience who would be innovative?

Isn't Gibbs a "sr advisor" or something? If so, doesn't he have something to say about this considering some of his coaches are still on the staff?

Redskins have the lead in 3rd quarter. Defense just wore down. Terrible play by Cerrato to let that punt hit him on the log. Very bad defense by Campbell to let the Panthers scor so easily to take the lead. Snyder shoud have knocked down that successfull 2 point conversion (what's wrong with him?)
Zorn should have leveled Delhomme on that rool out, doesn't he know how to tackle? Or is it that the majority of these so called expert bloggers just kon't know football. If you lose just blame the QB or headcoach, typical uneducated fans. Redskins plus 3.5 sent me to the cashier's window.

This was probably the first time we have been up by 15 points or more in two years. All year long we waited to see if the defense would be more aggressive when we were up. No..the same bend don't break. Jake leads the league in interceptions and we let him sit back and pass.

Sorry J. Reid, but this was not a stunner. If you have been following the Skins since the latter half of last year's season, then you know that this team is heading for more disasters. First, let's point out the obvious, this is not a team in disarray, but rather a bad team. Second, we don't have a legitimate head coach. How many plays does his playbook have? Do you know where I can email Zorn some plays? The redskins cannot score over 17 points because they run out of plays after half time.

Also our QB is not a legit QB. How long is he going to use the excuse that he's had to learn so many different systems each year? Didn't Brett Favre learned two new different systems in two years? Also, it looks like C. Portis is hitting his downward slide.

So don't expet much good to come this team's way this season. If they manage another win, I'll be surprise and upset because they might put themselves out of the lottery for Tim Tebow. Danny boy is already making his move to entice M. Shanahan becuase he knows that the choices he has made are blowing up in his face as we speak.

72Redskins - you have the most intelligent post here. JC is not the issue - he actually played pretty well today given the inept-ness of his O Line. I don't care if Vince Lombardi was coaching and Joe Montana was the QB - this team cannot win without skill in the trenches. Right now we have backups starting on the O Line. If you put JC and Portis behind a good O Line, both would be in the running for the Pro Bowl.

All of us loyal fans should stop buying tickets to games, stop buying skins merchandise, stop doing anything that is contributing to Danny's bank account and then maybe Danny will get a clue and get a Bill Polian to come in and run this show. Otherwise we're going to be reading and writing the same posts for the next decade.

JC is JC..he get's his standard fumble a game and what's so bad, Moss is held, grabbed and mauled but the ref wouldn't throw a flag, that's because if you throw the ball up in the second row of the stadium they will disregard the holding...what an idiot! He continues to lead the league in fumbles, uncatchable balls, and 2yds down the side lines where our receivers have no chance.
Saw this loss coming a mile away. Zorn is so political correct that he took the loss before he will bench Campbell. Now Zorn will be fired for being a bonehead and an idiot for not challenging the ruling on the player pushing Redskin player into fair catch receiver. The halo rule says you have to give the receiving player room and by having the defender pushing Westbrook he also becomes part of Westbrook in halo rule. His hands are an extension of Westbrook who was pushed into Randle EL. Instead Zorn shows his cluelessness and challenges if the ball hit a Redskin player, what a maroon. How dumb was that.
Then the Defense falls to sleep on critical times....Deangelo Hall gets punked by Jake on a QB option..pathetic! Carlos Rogers can't hold on to interceptions or cover!
Fire Zorn, Bench Campbell for starters and at the end of the season, well here is my house cleaning list of players to go or be traded for picks:

Coach Zorn- His tree hugging political correctness is gone too far. He refuses to bench Campbell and gets what he deserves. He was a poor X and O coach and coaches way to conservative; the playing not to lose mindset, not playing to win. He gets a lead and he along with Jason choke! Jason, for all you Jason Campbell Koolaide drinkers has the stats of letting two winless teams come from behind and beat you on mediocre play.

Those stats that your rabbit, fans continue to tout mean nothing when you continue to choke and make bonehead plays like throwing two miles up in the stadium to not get the flag on your receiver being held...NICE! You sure show a high IQ as the team leader.
Now the List of Players:

1.JASON CAMPBELL- just let him go and either draft or get a good quality player.
2.Randle EL- Don't understand why he is still back there for punts.
3.Carlos Rogers-Sorry, can't catch,or cover.use him for trade bait.
4.Fred Smoot-trade bait.
5.Dangelo Hall-trade bait.
6.Devin Thomas-trade bait.
7.Malcolm Kelly-trade bait.
8.Clinton Portis-trade bait.
9. Chris Samuels- stays hurt to much
10. Casey Rabach- need new blood.

Hey Gang....Well....ya know, I'm listening to Jerry Gray talk about "leaders" in the locker room...Much as I love a guy like Doc Walker, his accolades for oh, say, "Caveman",the "Beast" Mike Sellers-when he's talking him up on air-well, he sure ain't shown me much on the field lately. Not to single out Mike, but we give a lot of our players WAY too much credit individually, only to see 'em come up small time and time again on the field. We're the parents who scream at our kids for screwing up and then when they start to cry-hug 'em and tell 'em we love 'em. PLEASE...all these "we gotta try harder,,,,we got heart,,,,we'll stick together...." and all the other platitudes. I'm. done.with. it.
Fact is, we are stuck with an owner who is gonna be here a LONG time. He is an entrepreneur who will MILK this/us til we stop giving him our hard earned money. When WE stop accepting his narcissistic handling of OUR team....well, maybe then we will see change,,,,have a hope of something more than mediocrity at best and utter contempt for the fans of this team at worst.
...Once again, I'm too steamed to write or think in a coherent way,,,,but really...this is just pitiful. And nothing personal, Al Goldy-but at least in years past after another miserable performance we had Joe Jacoby or Riggo and Andy P to listen to. Frank Herzog, too, for that matter. But Dan owns the station now. I'm trying to refrain from ad hominen attacks.....but this is just sad. And how many commercials can they squeeze in on TV?
The end of the (human) world is near-and our Redskins epitomize what is wrong in the world at large.Hubris, stupidity, pride, greed, false humility,,,,on and on and on.
At this point, as I see it, all we can hope for is to have the Ghosts of Football Past, Present and Future pay a visit to Mr Snidley-er and, as happened with Scrooge and his famous visit with the Christmas ghosts-that he see what the TRUE MEANING of the Redskins in this town...and adjust his actions accordingly....
Now Andre Carter is on Comcast talking about heart and how good the guys are and fighting through ....now, for something NEW and INSIGHTFUL...
Go Skins....
p.s.-sorry, Mr Snyder about that "snide', ad hominen bit....and B. Mitch-we LOVE ya', bro!

I like Jim Zorn, but he's proving he's not a good coach. His decision making is awful (you can't challenge when VERY clear replays show you have no chance of winning it). It's too difficult to come back with no timeouts. That was just one bad decision (the going for it on 4th and 3 at the 38 with a play they'd run four times already. Uh, defenses do adjust, yknow. And guess what, Carolina adjusted, they stopped it, they had momentum and field position, they marched down for a FG).

But, as most of the fans know (minus Barno and maybe a few other delusional people) is when you have an owner who doesn't know enough about football, yet makes big football decisions, you're going to have a hard time winning. Remember, he and Vinny said, "Zorn's our guy." If there was any accountability at the top, changes at the top would be made. Now, we all know Snyder isn't going anywhere, unfortunately. Our only hope, then, is he starts getting the fact that he's a big part of the problem. Yes, he's willing to spend money, yes, he wants to win, but if you make bad decisions, they cost you in losses. He has to hire a great general manager (a real football guy) and get the hell out of his way -- and I mean several years out of his way, because this may not be a quick fix.

BTW, how does DeAngelo Hall not tackle a QB with the game on the line? Management gave him $55 million. It's great he made the big interception, but to have your starting cb not be able to tackle even a QB, with the game on the line, that's not worth it -- and that's on management (personnel).

Offensive line -- gee, did anyone, anyone at all, besides most of the pundits and most of the fans, express concerns about the offensive line (effectiveness and staying healthy with older injury prone players)? The pundits and fans should not be smarter than the people running the team.

I haven't checked to see Barno's commenting yet, but here's what it will be: "We lost on a fluke special teams play. We're still a good team and we're going to the playoffs..." Hopefully, Barno and the few who still think like him will wisen up, because it's going to take an overwhelming majority of fans to maybe, maybe get Snyder to see the light.

Where is no reason to be stunned when the result is as expected. Ineptitude in this team runs rampant from top to bottom. Please (Redskin Nation) understand that Todd Collins in this offensive play calling will still be terrible because Zorn is clueless. Never seen an offense so bad. We really should be 0-5.
Where's Malcolm Kelly....I think he is having a snack on the bench. I think that you can't go wrong anymore with Marko and Mason playing. I mean why the hell not. I could impersonate Malcolm Kelly if they want me too.

Coach Corner

Holmgren, Shanahan, Gruden, Cowher

Holmgren (5 out of 10 chance) Zorn's Mentor. Can't take his boy's position.

Gruden (7 out of 10)
HE IS A BAD COACH!!!! HE TOOK DUNGY'S TEAM AND LUCKED UP ON A SUPER BOWL PEOPLE!!!! HE IS NOT ANY GOOD!!!! But, the odds of him coming here are decent.

Shanahan (8 out of 10) Proven winner, use d to coach Portis. Demands respect in the locker room. Problem: He also is a GM type and Vinny has to go. WE all know that Vinny isn't going anywhere so, with that being said, 8 if Vinny goes, 4, if Vinny stays.

Cowher (5 out of 10) Carolina is calling him everyday. He lives in NC as you know people. Easy decision in my book.

Therefore, Jon Gruden will be head coach next year. Another buster head coach.

If you want to blame players on offense blame the o line. Their performance has been laughable this year. How do you expect Jason Campbell to be awesome when he's getting drilled half the time he drops back. You put Peyton Manning or Tom Brady with our o line and they would struggle. He's had solid numbers this year. How about we get rid of the disasters that are Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly. Who is JC supposed to throw to? You can't throw to two people all the time you need more options we have Cooley and Moss and sometimes ARE. He's had solid numbers this year. How about we get rid of the disasters that are Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly. Who is JC supposed to throw to? You can't throw to two people all the time you need more options we have Cooley and Moss and sometimes ARE. JC isn't the problem he's a solid qb and with a decent o line and receivers that can catch he could do very good things for us. Would you rathe have Patrick Ramsey back?

The same defense that practically spotted us 14 points? I don't think they are the reason we lost.

Oh no the defense isn't the reason we lost I must have been watching another team play defense that second half. Did our offense give up 20 points? No. It was our defense that spotted us 14 points that let Johnathan Stewart run the touchdown. It's our defense that let them get the 2 point conversion and it was our defense. Yes the same defense that spotted us 14 points that let Delhomme run that ridiculous first down on 3rd and 8. So if you have to blame somebody at the end of the game blame our defense for the most part for not being able to hold a 15 point lead against a winless team.

Lasly, Jason in 6'5". Peppers is 6'6". We throw a slant to 5'9" Santa Moss on 4th down. If you have to a slant to your 5'9" receiver, guess, what happens; The ball get batted. If you want the quick slant, throw it to Kelly or Thomas.

They've probably dropped the most passes on the team. If we need to let anybody go it's them. They have been complete busts. What have they done to prove themselves?

Beautiful tackle by DeAngelo. No way was Delhomme taking it to the house on my man.

That was the tackle that sealed the game. That wasn't beautiful that was awful. He let Delhomme get 9 yards and a first down that ended the game. If he wouldve tackled him instead of hitting him
and letting him carry him two more yards then it wouldve been beatiful. That was a horrible defensive play.
