Redskins lose by a point

The Dallas Cowboys struggled on offense all day - and were at risk of being shut out for the first time in the history of the storied rivalry. But Tony Romo & Co. came up with a late score to sneak by the Redskins 7-6 Sunday at Cowboys Stadium.

Washington kicker Shaun Suisham was perfect on field-goal attempts entering Sunday's game, but his misses in Dallas proved costly.

Suisham missed a 50-yard field goal attempt with 7 minutes, 6 seconds remaining in the game. The kick, which sailed wide right, would've made it a two-possession game for the Redskins.

The Cowboys took over possession on their own 40-yard line, and Tony Romo needed nine plays and 4 minutes, 20 seconds to drive downfield. Romo hit Patrick Crayton for a 10-yard touchdown for their first score of the game. With the extra point, Dallas took the slim lead. Romo was 5-of-6 passing for 65 yards on the game-winning drive.

The Redskins had a final chance, but an illegal wedge penalty on the ensuing kickoff pinned Washington back on its own 8-yard line. But on first-and-10 from the 33, quarterback Jason Campbell threw an interception to Dallas linebacker Anthony Spencer to end the Redskins' final chance.

Campbell turned in one of his best performances of the season, going 24-of-36 passing for 256 yards. He had no touchdowns and one interception. Romo finished the game 15-of-27 passing for 158 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

Replacing an injured Ladell Betts at running back - who was replacing an injured Clinton Portis - Rock Cartwright finished with 67 yards on 13 carries. In the second half, though, he had only 11 yards on eight carries.

Cartwright was also the team's leading receiver with 73 yards on seven catches.

Marion Barber had 99 yards on 20 carries to lead Dallas. Suisham, who'd hit his first 13 field goal attempts of the season, was 2-for-4 kicking on the day.

This is the WORST offense EVER! Even WITH Betts they sucked. The defense needs to give up now, stop fighting and get us a good draft.

Posted by: learnedhand1 | November 22, 2009 4:17 PM

Agreeing here with lh. Look at the players we've lost from the offense this season -- Samuel, Thomas, Williams, Rinehart (that's four O linemen), Cooley, Portis, and Betts. With those circumstances, I agree with "fairly well under the circumstances." Suisham should have made one of those two FGs.

Posted by: League-Source | November 22, 2009 4:21 PM | Report abuse

We suck. Cut Suisham. Fire Cerrato. We are an embarrassment.

ZORN lost this game. He is a puzzy, sticks his nose into the play calling when he shouldn't, and wastes timeouts. Its not a one time occurrence either.

The injury argument goes out the window when you get to the fourth quarter and have an opportunity to win a football game. Yeah pride and heart. But nothing to show for it. You can't give away games, regardless of who's playing. Coaches had a terrible day and team followed suit.

Posted by: CDon | November 22, 2009 4:23 PM | Report abuse

True MRREDSKIN21..
at 3-7 the skins should treat the next 6 games as preseason and play their backups and rookies and determine who to keep and who to drop at the end of the year.. AND to give them all starting experience in the NFL!!!

But, they wont.. They'll waste the opportunity by playing starters till the bitter worthless end.
++++++++++++++++

The funniest part is, they won't play the back-ups.

Even when the team hits 3-9 in two weeks, Zorn, Lewis and Company will STILL be coaching and calling games as though they were protecting a 30-point lead, instead of being up 3-0 or 6-0 at any given point in any given game.

They're PATHETIC.

All props to Blache and the defense.

My heart goes out to them, having to see their good work undone nearly every week by this lame excuse of an offense.

Screw giving props to the defense. It was Dallas's offensive futility more then great defense that was at work today. But what happened when Romo and the offense woke up? They went right down the field and scored. The D dropped to early INT's that my grandpa could catch - but it wouldn't of mattered. The Skins would of just hunkered down and settled for some more long, missed FG's.

Its a shame they lost,,,the Skins did play hard and with pride, on the road no-less in a very hostile stadium and with a decimated offense.

However, the coaching and play calling was poor at times.

The 3rd and inches play in the first quarter,,, when they line up in a single back set, was a dumb-a.s.s formation.

Posted by: CDon | November 22, 2009 4:23 PM | Report abuse

Exactly. Players go down all the time, and backups are expected to step up. The backups could be better then some of the starters because we all know Zorn can't evaluate talent worth a damn. They had plenty of chances to win and just blew it, it wouldn't of mattered if all the starters were in there or not. Bottom line: coaches don't have any confidence in the offense and it showed.

Posted by: infrequentposter | November 22, 2009 4:45 PM | Report abuse

LS, Zorn LOST the game. Agree to disagree or not, but no way you hang this on Suisham.

Zorn froze him with his moronic "coaching" performance at the end of the first half. How do you NOT take a shot with 15 seconds left???? Yer 3-6 on the road and can SIEZE THE DAY. Instead you F around and let your kicker stand out there for 5 minutes. That alone was reason to run a play and then run him back out there on 4th. Shotgun, throw it away ASAP if you get pressure or its not there. MK12, DT11, FD86 all in the end zone. Leave Rock in to p/u the first guy through.

He wasted a TO when Campbell had the ball ready to snap ON FIRST DOWN. Hes gotta STFU and let the play go. STUPID!

He played over conservative, calling a draw!!!!! on the 3rd and 2 right before Suisham's second miss from what was it 50+? A draw has the same risk as a pass... lose yards...and the boys had been gap blitzing all that series. IT WAS JUST STUPID. And i don't for a minute think SLewis or SSmith called that play. Run a damn roll out to Davis on an out, or a straight run at least.

And we all saw again how much that TO would have been nice to have a the end of the game.

This team deserves better coaching and game management than they are getting.

Dallas is the most uninspired team I have watched all season. Their stadium sucks, had no atmosphere, even their new field turf seems awful. So frustrating to lose to a team that didnt even seem to care. Glad wade phillips got to shake his fat arms at our missed field goals. I think they are as bad as we are.

Posted by: campb2cd | November 22, 2009 4:55 PM | Report abuse

the team played well despite the injuries. the batted pass for an int hurt but what really killed us was the corners giving all the corners on the drive when the cowboys scored. all season long the corners play soft on their man. also the dropped picks killed us. we can't blame zorn for much except his blatant misuse of the timeouts. as far as the playcalling, sending suisham in to kick an fg on 3rd and 11 was a major WHAT THE FUQQ moment especially from our own 21 yd line! this loss hurts the worst because i live in south texas and everyone i work w/ will let me hear about it tomorrow.

Posted by: charronegro1971 | November 22, 2009 4:57 PM | Report abuse

Zorn should NEVER have called for that long FG. Suisham is not a good long range kicker and the miss gave the Cowpies the short field they needed to drive down and score.

Also, I am SICK of seeing Jason Campbell put up good numbers but then fail with the game on the line. Who in the WORLD did he think was open when he threw that INT to end the game? Down by one point with plenty of time to get into FG range and he throws it into coverage like that? Inexcusable. He needs to go.

cowpies may wind up winning the division, but they'll be one and done in the playoffs just like always. they're nothing special, really, in spite of all the press they get, and it's about time for romo to go in the tank for the season.

The game was on the Fox affiliate here in LA, thus I had a chance to watch a Redskins game.
This team played hard, courageously, and didn't give up. Yes it has serious deficiencies: for the first time I see why JC isn't comfortable looking deep down field. Yet, I have less and less respect for the people screaming for him to be outta here than ever before. He played tough, his release is much, much quicker, he didn't lock in on receivers. Yes, he had a few errant passes, especially that last one, but I'm convinced more than ever this team can be competitive with him at qb, and if we get rid of him he will be productive and successful somewhere else, which will be (again) the 'Skins' loss.

Aesthetically I wish we'd go back to the gold pants with the burgundy jerseys....

This team could beat Dallas in DC, and just might take a game from NY or the Eagles. They still may not finish better than 6-10, especially with these tough, tough injuries, but if you let these young guys play to gain experience, then bring in the right people (a real GM) next year, this team could be playoff material if not next year, 2 years from now vs. blowing everything up and being ready 4-5 years from now.

Guys...Redskins have been playing extremely well since the second half of Atlanta game. Cowboys just got lucky. Given all the key injuries and the makeshift offensive line, I believe Jason Campbell had played really well. The defense was so close to shutting out the Cowboys offense.

Either way, this is the LEAST enjoyable season I've had as a Redskin fan. (30yrs)

Thanks Zorn! If I ever meet you, I plan to punch you in the stomach.

We could atleast be playing young guys who will be here next season. We should be planning for next season, getting M. Mitchell some experience. Also, does anyone really think Campbell will be here next year? There is no chance in god's green earth!!! We should be playing Collins or 3rd string QB. Atleast they might be here next year.

Posted by: Redskin_in_miami | November 22, 2009 7:15 PM | Report abuse

Team played hard today; that was good to see. Jason played well, sticking the ball where he needed to even with somebody in his grill (repeatedly). Running game was non-existent, big pass plays non-existent and therefore points non-existent.
Yeah, the defense collapsed at the end, and Suisham missed his two field goals and Zorn blew his timeouts. But the offense has got to score more. That's the key. This loss hurt cuz we gave 'em such a battle in their house. I know we have injuries out the wazoo but that always enables other people to step up, or try to (as it does in every sport, every year).
Bottom line remains the same: At year's end, exit Cerrato, enter a capable GM.

Posted by: jdsp2000 | November 22, 2009 8:52 PM | Report abuse

So the Redskins go into Dallas, a team that needs the win badly and is playing to keep the division lead, and lead all game before losing by 1 point.

And people here do nothing but cry about the loss.

Here's a newsflash you clowns: this is a 3-6 team that was down to its 3rd string RB and lost yet ANOTHER guard during the game for the season.

If you don't see they did was well as they are able given the circumstances, then you don't know jack about the game and you haven't been watching this team all year.
