Redskins make case for assistants to remain

During his press conference on Monday afternoon, Washington Redskins General Manager Bruce Allen said the Redskins' new coach - whoever that may be - will decide the future of the current assistant coaches in Washington.

It is widely believed that former Denver Broncos coach Mike Shanahan will be the next coach of the Redskins and that he has already started to compile his staff. Many league observers believe it will start with his son, Kyle Shanahan, as offensive coordinator as well as current Cincinnati Bengals' defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer in the same role in Washington.

In the locker room, players said they were voicing support for assistants to keep their jobs in D.C., however.

Cornerback DeAngelo Hall said "a lot of guys are putting votes in for their position coaches and guys they've grown close to." Hall said that guys would "be up there screaming for" coaches Jerry Gray and Steve Jackson, and tight end Chris Cooley shouted across the locker room to fellow tight end Todd Yoder that he had gone in to speak with Allen regarding tight ends coach Scott Wachenheim.

The future of at least one assistant, however, may already be decided. Hall indicated that defensive coordinator Greg Blache likely won't be back with the Redskins.

"I think the writing's on the wall for G.B.," Hall said. "I think he feels like he's done. I don't think he wants to coach any more. So I don't know if he'll come back as the coordinator or not."

It'd be cool if BA told the guys "Vinny's gone. You don't get a say in that stuff anymore. You should worry about playing better and keeping your own job."

Or something like that...

The first thing Shanahan should do as team president is interview Jerry Gray for Bruce Allen's job.

Similar question, when Jim Zorn gets to the Clevland Browns to work for his ol boss, will he be able to correctly name the team colors?

Posted by: alex35332

He'll get the orange right, but probably wont remember that other major color until Holmgren painfully points to the name on his new shirt.

Thats a 50% improvement, and really all you can ask for from any level coach is a slight improvement.

Posted by: alex35332 | January 4, 2010 2:41 PM | Report abuse

Players need to be worried about their own butts, not the assistants that couldn't get it done under Zorn. New coach can figure out who he wants to lead the team. Inmates shouldn't be running the asylum.

Stumped,
Joe Gibbs - up and comer
so your point is what?

My point is that Snyder has taken those risks before and, yes, he's also brought in some big name coaches, all with mixed results (including Saint Joe). I believe he is learning from those mistakes. The Allen/Cerrato action is evidence.

We need a very good head coach, a very good coaching staff and a very good OL and a very good QB. Put those pieces together and suddenly they are all better than very good.

My point?...now is not the time to roll the dice.

How can they still be making a case for Jerry Gray when the DB's sucked SO BAD this year?!!!

And please don't waste the text pointing out the scheme again - look at the level of individual skill they demonstrated with bad tackling, jumping double moves, poor pursuit angles, dropped INT's and sh!tty attitudes...or are coaches not accountable for the performance of their players? Chances are he's gone. Why not man the f_ck up and toss a name out there? He won't because he can't, he can't because he's pu**y.

POSTED BY RedDMV

I always find it funny when some anonymous poster calls out a players for being a "pu**y.

As always, Red, you really should tell him that to his face. Schedule a time and place and I'll even volunteer to clean up your chicklets.

Yeah, Rock has been overly pissing and moaning this year. That tends to happen to good people when they are caught in a Mother of all Disfunctional Organizations like this one (and Duh Rayduhs).

On the other hand he walks the walk and I have much more admiration for a guy who calls out his bosses with his name attached than some blog board badd-azz criticizing him for it.

Jerry Gray SUCKS and so does Blache. How can people actually think these two jokes are good coaches? Other than O-line, which was coached pretty well by Buges, our secondary is the biggest glaring weakness on the team. And Blache is an arrogant, angry old man (he's an angry elf) who thinks Landry is best at FS and Orakpo is best at DE half the time.

Good riddance to those two guys who can't coach talented players into exceeding their talent level.

The only reason Shanahan hasn't had more success since Elway retired is that he has been in the same conference as the Colts, Pats, and Steelers. Come on, those teams have been great annually for a decade! ...

Posted by: zjfr2 | January 4, 2010 1:19 PM

I've stopped saying that Zorn will have success later as an offensive coordinator, but now its Kool-Aid time on Shanahan. Throughout the 80s and 90s, the Broncos, Colts, Pats, and Steelers (the middle two who have only ever come on strong because of each of those team's Elways), did not have to play NFC East opponents twice a season. Post-Elway, Shanahan coached five post season games, four of which where the Broncos first and last games of the post season. Every conference has at least one good team for a run of years, many two. This one about the dominating teams in the AFC is a stretch. Shanahan is by no means a silver bullet. Banking on his past glory is no safer than banking on Gibbs' past glory when he came back for his reincarnation.

Or maybe he'll build a roster that doesn't consists of a bunch of guys that are 1 hit away from an injury. I'll give you Rhino, Jarmon and Cooley but Samuels, Thomas, Portis, and Betts should have been accounted for. We knew about Samuels Stenosis for 3 years now and Thomas was almost certainly a lock to get injured again this year. Portis has over 2,000 carries and Betts is over 30.

Posted by: jksesq1 | January 4, 2010 3:21 PM | Report abuse

He would get the kind of money that Gregg Williams got when he was DC.

He'd be making more money than some Head Coaches in the league.

I think that's a pretty good reason.

Yeah but they wanted to get rid of portis to and we gave up at the time the best shut down corner in the league and a pick if I am not mistaken. So I think at least until proven otherwise Denver is more personal savvy than Washington.

Although Shmike Shmanahan was shopping for the groceries and cooking there at the time.

How about trade Cooley, forget about Marshall, and get the best OL in the draft, and possibly a good FA OL. Trust me DT, MK and MM will be fine .

Posted by: iH8dallas | January 4, 2010 3:31 PM | Report abuse

Here's not a far fetched prediction and quite possible if shanny comes to town. He's going to want a player or to that's been in his style of offense to help others along. People get ready for B Marshal to leave Denver. That bridge is burned between Marshal and that HC! Maybe a DT11 cooley for B marshal trade will be B Allens first transaction.

I heard Mort say that Shanny was trying to trade Marshall this past offseason before he was fired. There are red flags all over that dude, no way should the skins pick him up, unless it costs them nothing in terms of picks,or player(s).

Love Marshall's talent, hate his attitude. Showed his level of professionalism during training camp when he was half-assing the drills caused he was pouting about his contract.

Can someone explain why Zimmer would leave Cinci? He seems to be well-liked there, has an equal (if not superior) defensive personnel cast, and is on a team that is in the playoff and seemingly a lot closer to a Super Bowl run than the Redskins. Just wondering what the issue is and why he would leave there to come here. Is it a lack of autonomy under Lewis? Money?

Posted by: jksesq1 | January 4, 2010 3:21 PM | Report abuse

No way the Bengals D is superior to the Skins as far as talent wise. Zimmer has taken a bunch of no names and made them overachieve. Nothing that the Bengals have compare to the Skins D line or Fletcher. He'd be salivating at having a chance to utilize Orakpo, Carter, and Haynesworth

Zimmer wanted a contract extension with the Bungles because his contract expired at the 2009 season. He didn't get an extension from them, so now he's shopping his services.

WTH is with people wanting to trade cooley, Fred Davis is not a better player, he drops too many balls.

And why would you want to get rid of a 2-TE set that could be the most dangerous in the NFL?

Everyone wants to create an Identity for themselves a 2 TE identity would be a great one to have for the skins.

This is a common misconception. Just because you are more familiar with the big names on our team, doesn't mean that other teams don't have just as much or more talent. It's about all 11 guys, not just a couple great players.

There are holes on our defense that we've hashed out all season, there's no way you can definitively add up all the talent on our defense and say it's better than the Bengals.

I agree, and I get frustrated when two or three weeks in a row the announcers say something like "The normally sure handed Fred Davis dropped that one."

What the h3ll do they mean "normally sure handed". He's played half a season and he drops a third of passes.

Give me a break. Cooley is still way better.

I'm basing that statement off of watching them on HBO. The coaches even stated that the Defense didn't have alot of talent on one episode (I think directly to the players) and that they would have to make up for it with hard work and sound football. Go back and watch the show, its in there, I guarantee

Agree that Cooley is better, right now, but he did fumble the ball a few times last season at the most inopportune times.

Think he may have coughed up a few this year too...

I wish Davis would cut out that leaping crap... he's going to get lit up in the air one of these days.

uh.... players don't have a say anymore now that the Z-man is gone. That's what's wrong the last decade, players are pals too much with the staff and the owner. They need to shut their trap and be ready to come in and play, and play every snap for 16 games and go to training camp with an intense focus and determination.

These Redskins players that are voicing their case to have 1 or 2 or 3 coaches to stay because they like them, they need to go because that's not what the direction Bruce Allen and the new coach (ahem... Shanahan) will likely do, they will bring in their new staff and the players that don't fit will get the boot out.

Q: This is probably a stupid question but how can the Washington Post track Snyder's plane?

A: The Post picked up on this little trick from the Skins fans over at extremeskins.com, which has been doing this for a few years, to glean inside info on who Snyder will be signing in free agency, which coaches are interviewing, etc.

First make sure you properly title all of your pages. That will help. Then you need to add meta tags that describe your page. Do a search on how to do that, but its very easy. Make sure those tags are on every page.

That will go a long way towards helping. Also you just need to visit your page often and get others to as well.

Is the name of your site unique.. or is it 'girls softball team'? Make sure google's gay filter is set to off as well... I have heard that most softball teams' webpages have that problem.

Let's trade our 1st round pick for a late 1st. rounder and two 2nd rounders.

Then, let's trade the late first rounder for two more second rounders, trade Cooley for another second, and we'll have six second round picks!!! Whooo!!!

Then let's sign Julius Peppers, Jevon Kearse, Kevin Mawae, resign Stephon Heyer and we should be set.

So we've all argued over the course of the year that our biggest areas of need are O-Line, the secondary and addressing the QB issue. Why all of the sudden are people trying to trade assets for Brandon Marshall? He's a great receiver, but if no one's blocking and no one's throwing, how is he going to catch anything? Trading for Marshall would be a classic Danny-Boy kind of move. If they do it, it would further signal that nothing has really changed at all.

If we poach anything from Denver, I would hope it would be some offensive lineman, either to start or to help coach up the starters in Shanahan's blocking scheme.
