Inside the Numbers: the Redskins' Offense

The Redskins offense is ranked seventh in the NFL - second in the run game, 18th in passing, and, to me, most importantly - 23rd in scoring. That's where the gains have to be made. The Redskins rank 14th in red zone efficiency (14 TDs on 26 trips inside the 20).

Clinton Portis now leads the NFL in yards from scrimmage (1021), rushes (187), rushing yards (944). He has 260 yards more than any other runner in the NFL; yes, the Skins have not had the bye week, so he has more games than most other guys, but still that's a staggering gap. He's averaging a robust five yards per carry and his seven rushing TDs are second-most in the league.

Only three teams have been better at dominating time of possession more than the Redskins this season. Washington (32:31) trails Houston (32:38), the Giants (32:51) and Baltimore (33:38).

Jason Campbell is fifth in the NFL with a 100.5 passer rating. A few more TDs - he has eight - and the dude would be tops in the league. This has been an outstanding first half for him, and then you think about where this offense is and the potential for him to get better in it with Jim Zorn as his guide, and if I'm a Skins fan that's a beautiful thing.

Campbell ranks in the top eight of the NFL in most major categories (attempts, completions, percentage, yards, interceptions) except TDs.

Campbell ranks second in the NFL in fourth-quarter passer rating (122.8), behind only Tony Romo. JC is completing 71 percent of his fourth-quarter passes. He remains the only regular QB in the league yet to throw a pick. His rating of 93.5 on third down is a nice accomplishment as well.

We all know that the QB is the most important position in football, for the most part. So I figured I'd look at the difference between a team's passer rating, and that of the rating put up by their opposition. If you are getting good QB play, and preventing the other QB from making plays, then you should be winning games, right?

Green Bay is the only team with a better ratio than the Skins in this regard. The Packers have a 97.5 rating, while allowing a woeful 59.5 rating, for a plus-38. The Skins have a plus-26.6 (102.4/75.8). The Eagles (plus-14.4) and Titans (plus-13) are the only other teams at plus-13 or above. Philly and Green Bay are in the hunt at 4-3, while the Titans are the only team yet to lose.

And, finally, rounding out the Skins' Big 3, Santana Moss is tied for eighth in the NFL with 42 catches, and is fifth with 658 yards. He's tied for second with five receiving TDs. The goal now is for more diversity in that passing game; no other Redskins has more than one TD catch, and the need for bigger target guys in the red zone has been obvious. The ones they drafted can't get on the field for the most part.

Good golly, I HATE how negative Jasno is!

We need more Cooley in the red-zone. Apart from Randle El's option pass, I don't recall a pass being thrown to him around the goal-line.

(And trust me, I'm paying attention b/c he's on my fantasy team).

stumped--

It would be good to talk about next Monday on Tuesday.

Mondays are for beating ourselves up for winning.

Wednesdays are for discussing how bad last year's draft turned out. Corkczar leads this discussion.

Thursdays are usually reserved for earnest, intent discussions about next year's draft. The Truth is very concerned about this.

Maybe we can push everything back a day since the next game is on Monday, not Sunday.

I'm hoping to see more double TE's packages in the red zone in the second half of the year. I don't know if it WC enough, but it will give the skins bigger options near the goal line while still being able to use the power runs.

Okay,
Here are some happy (did I say happy?) thoughts on Week 9.

1) Skins have home field advantage at FEDEX (such as it is...it is an advantage right?)
2) One extra day of rest before Monday night. (the Steelers get rest too)
3) Gints play Cowpies. What's not to like? (Okay, they can't both loose.)
4) Eggels play Shehawks. I think the Eggels could loose this one. (It's a stretch)
5) Week 10 is a Bye week for the Skins. (Also, a Bye week for Cowpies)

There is a gray cloud withing every silver lining.

+++TheCork: I'm sure you've heard this before. Bad teams draft for THE PRESENT, good teams draft for the FUTURE. The Skins did exactly that. Vinny made the right calls. Thomas will be very good, and no one could have guessed Kelly would not be healthy.

Posted by: cj658 | October 27, 2008 4:14 PM++++ |

I HAVE heardd it before, and it it remains inaccurate. Good teams draft for their needs. The Redskins needed a receiver who would pay off sooner rather than later. Only an idiot would draft THREE second round receivers teh same year for the future.--CORK

+++"and no one could have guessed Kelly would not be healthy. "+++

The GMs who passed on him did. Perhaps they based their info on prior injury history?

With Moss's chronic hammie acting up, and an ancient special teamer playing third WR, are you saying the 'skins could NOT have used:

ROYAL 39 catches for 392--SEASON

JACKSON 32 catches for 505--SEASON

AVERY: 6 catches for 163 SUNDAY ALONE--CORK

+++"Avery and Jackson went to non-playoff teams with horrible receivers. Think about it. It is not Vinny's fault."+++

First of all, Philly didn't have horrible receivers and may make the playoffs this year by beating out the skins, if Moss is hurt.

Royal was ready to step in and replace Marshall when he was hurt for Denver. That's good GM work.

LAST WEEK ├ůvery had almost THREE TIMES as much yardage in one game as Vinny's Trio has had all season combined. YOU think about that.

The Skins drafting Kelly in the 2nd round reminds of watching my wife shop for purse.

Step 1: She decides she wants to buy something.

Step 2: Finds a problem with the desired item but willing to overlook it, after all it is a Chanel handbag; caviar leather, oh my.

Step 3: Comes to her senses and decides to purchase something a little safer (making Devin Thomas the equivalent of a Coach handbag)

Step 4: Goes back and buys the Chanel handbag too (Malcolm Kelly)

Step 5: and I quote, "but I had to have a matching wallet" (Fred Davis)

My apologies to those who cannot relate to this $4,000 analogy.

Is this a Rope a Dope by the Skins?

Lot's of injuries, I guess they aren't faking anything but if you could miss a stretch of 3 games it would be the Rams, Cleveland, and Lions don't you think?

Lot's of guys saying how tired they are and glad they have more time.

I think our coaching staff is shrewd enough to get Pittsburgh to think they are coming into an easier game!

Nah!

On the topic of "not blowing out lesser teams," I agree with the poster who said this isn't the BCS. W's and L's are all that matter.

1987 Redskins

Week 1 Sep 13 W 34-24 vs Philadelphia Eagles
Week 2 Sep 20 L 21-20 at Atlanta Falcons
Week 4 Oct 4 W 28-21 vs St. Louis Cardinals
Week 5 Oct 11 W 38-12 at New York Giants
Week 6 Oct 19 W 13-7 at Dallas Cowboys
Week 7 Oct 25 W 17-16 vs New York Jets
Week 8 Nov 1 W 27-7 at Buffalo Bills
Week 9 Nov 8 L 31-27 at Philadelphia Eagles
Week 10 Nov 15 W 20-13 vs Detroit Lions
Week 11 Nov 23 L 30-26 vs Los Angeles Rams
Week 12 Nov 29 W 23-19 vs New York Giants
Week 13 Dec 6 W 34-17 at St. Louis Cardinals
Week 14 Dec 13 W 24-20 vs Dallas Cowboys
Week 15 Dec 20 L 23-21 at Miami Dolphins
Week 16 Dec 26 W 27-24 at Minnesota Vikings (OT)

I don't see many blowouts there. The largest margin of victory, defeating the Giants 38-12, was with replacement players.

Are the 2008 Redskins as good as the 1987 Redskins? Maybe not. But they're 6-2 at the midway point and anyone crabbing about how their margin of victory isn't bigger is just looking for something to complain about, in my opinion.

steelers play dirty on D! yeah, i said it nate. your team plays dirty! rember carson palmer play? and i think they knocked someone else out as well after that...can't rember who it was. so am scared for portis, moss and jc. other than that...if the league disrespects the skins by not even making them 4 points fav. shame on them. this team will win if there are no major injuries on monday.

also it'd be nice if they could get some turnovers...

another thing...cooley has got to stop going for that extra yard or two AFTER he's picked up the first down. the dude needs to protect the ball first and foremost...1 yard not gonna help much if he looses that ball...we've seen clinton protect the ball much better over the years and get down and now it's time for cooley to do the same...

it really is humorous that people are still complaining about a draft!! The team is 6-2 and barring a complete colapse is a d@mn good team!! So what the 3 2nd round picks haven't had an impact yet. They havent had to!!!! Hopefully they won't!!!!! Enjoy a good team!! One I may add was built by the so called stupid front office.

cindy, please i love jasno's reporting but you have to stop him from hurting himself with these "analysis". and there's a reason charlie casserly is unemployed!

this team basically said we can not only beat the lions straight up without our best run blocker, pass protecter, best run stuffer, best corner, 2nd best safety but we'll cover the spread too. and THEY DID!!! this team turned it on and off whenever they wanted to yesterday. THAT is a mark of something special. and and no one is friggin celebrating in that locker room!!!! talk about a model championship team...

i hope to god no one gets hurt on monday night cuz that's the only thing that can stop this team. i don't want to hear "like i told you earlier this year...this is not a good team...it had lot of holes..." argh!

It's not either/or. A good player should do both. Anyway, Cooley's had 277 receptions as a Redskin and has fumbled 6 times, only losing 2 of the 6 fumbles. Portis has had about 2100 rushes and receptions, with 23 fumbles and 16 of them lost. So in terms of turning over the ball, Cooley's about on par with Portis.

Dealer,

This means the 'Skins are favored by 2. If they were playing in a neutral stadium, the Steelers would be favored by 1. If they were playing in Pittsburg, the Steelers would be favored by 4. But they're playing in FedEx, so the 'Skins are favoreed by two. That's not respect?

But what a load of crap for you to focus on. Respect isn't something you "get" it's something you earn. The game is on Monday. If they 'Skins win, they will earn respect. If they lose, they'll lose respect. All the rest is just power ratings.

Posted by: talent_evaluator | October 27, 2008 8:44 PM | Report abuse

te, everything being equal skins should be favored by 3 for homefield. but the "experts" are saying skins are not as good as the steelers eventhough they have a better record than pittsburgh and they're playing at home. so in fact steelers are favored by 1. and i think skins should have already earned the respect not only by their record but the way they've lost the games they've lost.

The Eagles have shown nothing to lead anyone to believe they are more than an 8 or 9 win team. The Redskins are better and keep winning. Why do people always assume everyone else is better. Washington keeps winning. I know its hard to understand but I will repeat Washington has 6 wins in 8 games. 6 wins. 6 wins. They have gone 2-1 in divisional road games. Wake UP! The Eagles have played 2 divisional games and lost BOTH one being at home! Wake up!

"Brotha" wasn't implying anything about race, if that is what you are implying, Cappy.

devin thomas would have just as many catches as avery if tana and cooley were injured.

Posted by: dealer1

What possibly have you seen from Devin Thomas to make you believe this? The ONLY reason you're saying this is because he was a 2nd round pick (which, as we all know, means nothing beyond raised expectations).

Although I will agree that the comparison is basically moot because Avery was picked prior to Thomas and Kelly. Still, one guy has proven he has the ability to play at this level, the other has not yet.

Couldn't agree with you more. Alot of things are off limits on the blog so if the topic of race comes up ever everyone goes up in arms. It's ashame the world has come to that but it is what it is I suppose. Sorry if I over reacted but my reaction is just a produce of the PC world that everything has been reduced to.

Who would you rather see on the roster now--any of the three second round (non) pass catchers or a second round offensive tackle pick who may be an alternative to having Heyer fill in at Samuel's spot? Before you answer, consider that Jason Campbell's health is at stake and with it the future of the Skin's season.

Now remember that the most prolific receiver during the preseason was McMullen who had to be cut due to numbers crunch at WR and the fact that you can not embarass Cerrato in his first draft. I believe that McMullen would of had a far larger impact this season as the red zone big target that this team does not still have.

So yeah, the draft is still debatable since the ramifacations of it are still impacting the team.

You are making the assesment on what he did in preseason against 3-4th stringers.

He was picked up by Seattle and is doing nothing for them and there receivers suck.

Lots of anger reading through these posts..I suppose thats good, I guess. Anyway, Bud Selig is doing an A+ job in killing the game of baseball.

Question for all those who/whom attend games at FedEx on a regular basis. Do I need to buy a parking pass for the game that I'm going to, or what is the best manner in which to get TO the field??

Thanks to whomever answers, and I'll personally mail you a check for 10,000,000,000 bonus points for your trouble....

McMullen may have had an impact but how could you trust the guy in red zone zitaution. the guy isnt a starter becasue he has a reputation dating back to college of droping balls. Not a good quality for a WR. Particularly in red zone situation i think they would be hesitant to go to him because he is flat out unreliable.
