Redskins plan a draft day party, invite fans

To: Jimmy Clausen (or Sam Bradford or Russell Okung or _______)
From: Washington Redskins
Subject: You're invited...

The Redskins have announced plans for a draft party and though they've yet to make a first-round selection, they've already announced the attendance of their new prize. Oh yeah, fans are invited, too.

The team is inviting fans to attend its Draft Day Party at FedEx Field on Saturday, April 24. Because the draft has been spread over multiple days this year, the team will be able to select its first-round pick on Thursday night and show him off to fans on Saturday. Coach Mike
Shanahan is expected to attend and address fans, and that first-round pick -- whomever it might be -- will likely grab a microphone as well.

Gates open at 10 a.m, though Shanahan won't likely address the crowd until 4 p.m. Admission is free. Current and former Redskins are also expected to be in attendance. It will also be a chance for fans to get a sneak-peak at the team's new scoreboards, which should be in mid-construction.

Okung is a no-brainer. The OL is abysmal. If they had a decent RT, then MAYBE a QB could be taken here, but their OT's are HORRIBLE.

Why wouldn't we look at a guy who played OL for a team that gives up few QB sacks? Its not like any of our RG's are a slam dunk.

Posted by: zcezcest1 | March 16, 2010 6:43 PM

Zeke, when you are talking about the Colts, much of the credit for not getting sacks has to go to PM and their system. Dude gets rid of the ball fast and must be factored in.

Right idea, wrong deets. Let me rephrase for u.

When you are talking about the Skins, much of the blame for the sacks has to go to JC. Dude holds the ball forever and that must be factored in.

That's the way it should read.

Ive been salivating over this dude! We would have have to trade back out of the #4 spot because hes not quite worth that high of a pick.

Posted by: goskinsgo1 | March 16, 2010 6:21 PM

`

I disagree.

Really good players can be had at any spot in the draft.

If you're selecting a player who has a 1st round grade in the 1st round, then it can't possibly be a reach no matter the spot.

The pageantry of the draft has complicated the draft process to the point where a talent like Spiller can't be taken in the top 5 b/c he only grades as a 1st rounder?
Bull S!

A rookie salary-cap should fix the silliness of passing on a future RB Chris Johnson just b/c of stupid draft grade politics!

Effectiveness of the 4-3/3-4 hybrid: (What its probably going to look like this year.)

AZ Cardinals : 7th in Interceptions at 21. GB was first with 30.
AZ Cardinals: Had 8 fumbles recovered but the top was 15 (Carolina) with lots of ties all along the way.
AZ Cardinals: Finished with 43 sacks ahead of the Redskins.

But the Redskins were a lot better in total yards allowed from scrimmage. The Redskins finished 10th, and the Cardinals finished 20th. But who went to the playoffs again?

Redskins were at the bottom in fumbles recovered at 6. Near the bottom in interceptions at 11.

"The Cardinals already incorporate the 5-2 defense, an older variation of the 3-4, in some of their defensive schemes. The Miami Dolphins have also incorporated elements of the 3-4 defense into their scheme, under defensive coordinator Paul Pasqualoni, the Dolphins are said to run what is called a 'Hybrid 3-4' which incorporates elements of both the 3-4 and the 4-3 defense depending on the situation and personnel on the field. With the hiring of defensive coordinator Dom Capers, the Green Bay Packers have switched to a hybrid 3-4 defense (2009). This switch will result in the Packers moving Aaron Kampman to outside linebacker. With the acquisition of Mike Nolan by the Denver Broncos as defensive coordinator, the Broncos have also made a switch to the 3-4 defense (2009). The Buffalo Bills have indicated they will use a 3-4 defensive package in the 2010 season.[2]"

Not saying that Peyton isn't part of it. But its not ALL Peyton. His OL has been very good.

The thing that Polian jumped on was his OL for the SB loss. I went thru it, drive by drive. Only 1 drive got stopped because of an OL mistake (a false start that led to a FG).

Skins need a back up QB…This is a brutal list of UFAs, but one has to be chosen from this list.

Derek Anderson
Patrick Ramsey
Josh McCown
Jeff Garcia
Kyle Boller
Daunte Culpepper
Charlie Batch
Rex Grossman
Chris Simms

I’d have to go with Derek Anderson, he’s the only guy besides Culpepper, Garcia, and Grossman that has had success in the league. Plus he’s only been in the league 5 years.

I also like beer.

When I'm reaching for a cheap cold one, it's usually PBR, which is the national beer of Portland. But only because Rolling Rock and Yuengling are in short supply in these parts.

I don't consider myself a beer snob, but I usually aim for places that serve a variety of flavors beyond the American macrobrews. Or the no-longer-American macrobrews like your Anheuser-Busch products. So maybe by definition I am a beer snob. But whatevs. Drink and be merry, I always say.

They were that close in time of possession? That onside kick took away a possession when baskett mishandled it and they lost another drive on Garcon's drop. Seems to me that time of possession would have been much better if they held onto the ball. Tough to blame that on the OL.

My biggest fear about the draft right now is not that Shanahan might grab a QB with the #4 pick.

It's that Rolando McClain might slip to the Giants at # 15

I hope either Jacksonville or Denver (some AFC Team) picks him b4 the Giants pick.

It's too bad we don't have the kind of situation where we would draft Spiller in the first round and Toby Gerhart in the second. Talk about thunder and lightning...

Guess we kinda sorta need an O line first though, huh?

With Vinny Cerrato as our GM, I'd be confident about our chances to trade back.

Problem is we'd receive two second rounders and prolly select Best, Dywer, and Tate with our three 2nd round picks. We have to hit a homerun with one of these runners right?

Posted by: Vicc | March 16, 2010 10:09 PM | Report abuse

From RI: "Coach Mike Shanahan is expected to attend and address fans, and that first-round pick -- whomever it might be -- will likely grab a microphone as well."

Notice the reference to "first-round pick" as in only one. So does RI, usually the last to know about these things, know for sure the Skins will have only one 1st round pick? After all, the Skins could swap their 4 and some other pick or picks for SF's 13 and 17 so SF can draft Suh who they covet and the Skins would get an elite OT (Bulaga, Williams, etc.) and Spiller with the 13 and 17.

"I'd love to find a way to get Spiller, Okung, Berry, McClain, Ford, McCluster, and Trent Williams. I'm gonna have my work cut out for me in Madden 2011 but I know I can pull it off."

I think if Barry Sims makes it to DC, he's here to stay...from the FAN website

The Redskins have a very good idea of what Sims is, because new offensive line coach, Chris Foerster worked with Sims last year while with the San Francisco 49′ers and Sims played for General Manager/E.V.P. Bruce Allen back in Oakland.

The Redskins have a good working relationship with his agent, Kenneth Vierra as well. Vierra represents Ma’ake Kemoeatu who last week agreed to a two-year deal with the team.

Any light beer is puppy pee and a waste of good urine, though the occasional Amstel Lighr is passable..Punks in London are switching to homemade applejack..Jhvid Best took a major mothernut blowout of his chopper blades and could end up a premature Brian Westbrook..

Good point fruit...I'm not sure Barnes and Best could coexist.

I can think of worse things than getting Barry Sims for a reasonable price for two years as a stop gap/depth guy while we develop some young new tackles...

I hope the Skins are in this derby. I think he carry's a 3rd tender, but maybe the Skins can get creative

Rob Sims will be the next to go in Seattle

Posted by Mike Florio on March 16, 2010 9:45 PM ET
The same source who tipped us off to the fact that Seahawks defensive end Darryl Tapp was being traded out of Seattle has given us another tip.

The next one to go is guard Rob Sims.

And this time we're beating Glazer to the punch.

Sims, a restricted free agent, is drawing strong interest from multiple teams. One of the teams is believed to be the Browns, who are now run by former Seattle coach Mike Holmgren.

Like Tapp, Sims is being held out of offseason workouts in anticipation of a deal. Unlike Tapp, Sims has not yet signed his RFA tender, and talks have not commenced with any specific team on a multi-year deal.

Sims has been tendered by the Seahawks at the fourth-round level. A four-year veteran, Sims started 14 games for Seattle in 2009.

So stay tuned. Something could happen soon; something apparently will happen at some point before the draft.

Well Done

I don't like the fact that Best suffered his first concussion so early.

I remember playing JV my sophomore year at QO high school(played with rapper Wale). I moved up to Varsity for the final two games and in practice getting smashed by our senior fullback who had at least 50lbs over me.

I had a headache for two hours. No concussion though.

Former Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter, who visited the Cardinals last week, is scheduled to visit the Washington Redskins on Thursday.

No team has ever won a Super Bowl because the left tackle was the difference.. QB's make the difference. Yes the QB needs protection but doen't make it sound like if the Skins don't draft one at number #4 we can't get one. Skins have a second recond pick to... Skins can easily draft a top 10 LT from there maybe top 5. QB is the most important player on the team.. he is the player they must FIX first...

Skins need a back up QB…This is a brutal list of UFAs, but one has to be chosen from this list.

Derek Anderson
Patrick Ramsey
Josh McCown
Jeff Garcia
Kyle Boller
Daunte Culpepper
Charlie Batch
Rex Grossman
Chris Simms

I’d have to go with Derek Anderson, he’s the only guy besides Culpepper, Garcia, and Grossman that has had success in the league. Plus he’s only been in the league 5 years.

Why do you need a young backup QB? He is not meant to be the QB of the future. I'd say Skins should go for Grossman or Ramsey. Grossman played under Kyle Shanahan last year and Ramsey played two years under Mike. Collins taught us having a backup who has an eldge up on knowing the system is a good thing. What we need is a guy who knows the system, can start the season (until number 1 guy is ready) and fill in when needed. oh and he has to be cheap... I'd say those guys would be the best out there as of now...
