Redskins Make Practice Squad Moves (Updated)

The Redskins have released LB Curtis Gatewood from the practice squad, according to a source with knowledge of the situation, and will make a corresponding signing to the practice squad shortly. They are likely to add another LB. Gatewood was here during camp and is a rookie out of Vanderbilt.

Despite earlier leaving the building with a bunch of his stuff in a bag, Fincher was not cut. The team expects Fincher to again be active this week, on special teams.

...

From Jason Reid

During the Redskins' four-game losing streak last season, they were outscored, 43-23, in the fourth quarter. Washington squandered numerous late opportunities to win those games, watching as their opponents often made more timely plays.

Not this season. Washington has shut out its three opponents in the fourth quarter, outscoring them, 21-0, which is among the keys to a 2-1 start. "We've kind of learned from the past," versatile defensive lineman Lorenzo Alexander said. "Conditioning, remembering what we've done in the past and just coming together as a team, I think all of those things play a part.

"This is my third year [with the Redskins], a lot of these guys [have] been here four or five years, so I think we're really starting to gel [and] pulling together in that fourth quarter. We've got to step up and make plays. I think that everybody understands that if they don't score, there's no way they can win."

Quarterback Jason Campbell's 125.9 passer rating in the fourth is his highest of any quarter, and the offense is "getting more confidence and more consistent," Alexander said. "They always had the firepower."

One more thing you know it's me because I like to chime in on theoritical issues that usually call for me to be objective. I usually find the role of being objective that as the best kind to cast an image of yourself in.

Reality:

In point of fact, I voted for Gore in 2000 and Kerry in 2004 and I will vote for Obama in 2008. However, I have no idea how my politics are at all relevant to this thread.

But since you raised the subject, I think the "us vs. them" crowd (corkczar among them) probably aligns with Bush. If not, they sure act like him.

You know what kills me is all the hype over the Min. Vikings before the season and now. I mean people thought they could get to a Super Bowl with Tavaris Jackson at QB? And now with the Gus bus is there anybody who believes that Min is going to win with him?

Why is it that anonymous blogs are the ONLY place I ever hear anyone defend the Redskins owner and management?

Posted by: Anonymous | September 23, 2008 1:55 PM
-----------------------------------

I'll defend them, at least over the last 5 years. Bringing Gibbs back was a brilliant move. It may not have led to a Super Bowl, but it brought continuity and respectability back to the franchise. Additionally, I think the decision this past offseason to focus on the draft shows they're moving in the right direction.

Aside from that - and the fact that in his early years, Snyder was a knucklehead on many fronts re the team/decisions, the guy is a decent man, and wants to win. The way he handled the Sean Taylor situation was first rate, and offering to help out by hosting Mike McGuire also shows class.

Of course we can and should criticize the front office when they make moves we disagree with, but that doesn't mean taking it to the other extreme either, as the beat reporter has, with what can only be described as an obvious case of I-Have-An-Ax-To-Grind.

Someone yesterday put it perfectly: At some point, JLC, Reid, Cindy, et al, will all move on to other jobs, but we will still be Redskins fans. And this board will still be here.

That being the case, I don't know why anyone would want to stick their neck out to defend La Canfora on THIS issue. He clearly was looking to sting Vinny and/or the team.

He needs to take responsibility for it and move on.

Seems to me that it's Cerrato that's the problem.

JaLaCa is just a beat reporter who loves writing about sports. If Vinnie would have just ignored this, it would not have made the news. Vinnie is running a BILLION dollar corporation, he should not waste any time on JaLaCa. As JaLaCa says all the time, if the Skins were winning, he wouldn't be so harsh on the Skins.

If I owed the Skins, I would be pissed at Vinnie. When you give attention to the problem, you're just fanning the fire.
When you run an NFL team, you have to ignore this type of stuff, otherwise you legitimize it.

The Post and JaLaCa are lovin' this controversy - it's all good publicity for them.

Question: did Durant Brooks ever handle kickoffs in college? Does he ever practice them with the Skins? If so, I wonder if he'd be better at it than Suisham.

Suisham is totally inconsistent; one kickoff will be a touchback, the next kickoff will land on the 25-yard line.

Something has to be done about that.

Posted by: MrRedskin21 | September 23, 2008 2:26 PM | Report abuse

Charlie - Why does it matter that Vinny addressed the JLC issue on his radio show? He's going to be doing the show for 2 hours every Friday so who cares what he talks about DURING his show. How does that exactly interfere with running a billion dollar corporation??? You really think Vinny goes home at night and has trouble falling asleep because some beat reporter is talking sh*t about him? Uh...no!

And no, Brooks is a punter. More or less.

There's a difference between being a journalist and being a commentator. A journalist takes no positions, merely reporting what he observes. A commentator does, in fact, take a position and is paid to be provocative and insightful. I don't know if La CaCa is paid to be a journalist or a commentator, but I submit he's poor at both. As a journalist his facts are frequently wrong and his analysis weak. As a commentator he is neither provocative or insightful, just petty and vindictive. It's clear he's trying to make a name for himself so he can move to greener pastures, but he'll have to elevate his game for that. Today he's suited for nothing more than the Inquirer or Jerry Springer. Cerrato's not the most impressive executive in NFL history, but at least he's doing what he gets paid to do. La CaCa, not so much. I realize blogs like this are part of the new media, but shouldn't some semblance of journalistic integrity carry over? I mean, should the people COVERING the news -- sports or otherwise -- be trying to insert themselves into it?

Alright, this is the last thing I'm going to say on this.

JLC did nothing wrong. JLC did not accuse the Redskins of anything. JLC wrote nothing in his blog about it. JLC wrote nothing in print about it. JLC said nothing on WaPo Live about it. JLC did absolutely nothing. He investigated a hunch, and when he found out he was wrong, that was the end of it.

The "unprofessionalism" came directly from Vinny Cerrato. Vinny Cerrato, a General Manager of a National Football League franchise (or whatever his title is), accused a reporter for a local newspaper of sabotaging his team - despite the fact that he knew nothing is/was wrong. Somehow, people here seem to think that's proper.

I actually don't care about JLC. I care about our GM, the behind the scenes leader of this franchise, spending his time during business hours on this ridiculous radio show that adds nothing to the performance of our team. It's just stupid. In 2 shows, it seems like he has already created a PR mess, along with highlighting some potential problems that can come about. I guess I'd rather have my GM focusing on this team rather than worrying about the activities of a local reporter or dealing with everything that goes into a radio show.

I'm wondering whether that is something he does on purpose. Like a surprise onside kick. Remember, he did the same kick at Seattle, which we recovered. I watched his approach to the ball during this specific kick, and it was much slower and calculated - like he meant to do it.

Vinny Cerrato is the furthest thing from a "personnel executive". He is widely perceived around the league as a lacky and kiss ass. He couldn't keep his job in San Francisco or ESPN. Given more time, he will only further f up the Skins.

Cinny Vartio needs to shut up and work on being a successful GM before he has a radio show and calls out a reporter for doing his job and for not printing anything about the team. How screwed up are we that we have a PR mess over a non-story, non-issue, this whole mess was created by Cinny. The best part is if he truly thought that JLA tried to "charge the franchise with tampering" he should have laughed it off as a good executive VP/GM/owner's boy toy would know that only another team can make such an accusation, but nope, Cinny got his panties in a ruffle and went public with it.

I've thought about this a while and my take is that Jasno and Vinny bring out the worst in each other. They both take the low road and each of them is a discredit to his institution. That the Post's and the Redskins' owners and managers tolerate -- and encourage -- their opprobrius behavior is a sign of the squalor of two once-great institutions.

Suisham is becoming more consistent ... that botch this weekend had the distance (52 yards) but was wide left b/c he got iced by his holder. And his kickoffs are way farther than last year.

So is there a bottom line about the guy leaving the Park with a garbage bag full of shoes? Does Gatewood look like Fincher? Was Gatewood wearing a prosthetic neck?

+++But since you raised the subject, I think the "us vs. them" crowd (corkczar among them) probably aligns with Bush. If not, they sure act like him.

Of all the wrongheaded posters in a wrongheaded world, you had to post here?

To clarify: I'd rather have my balls in an electric ball shredder than vote for Bush, or McCain for that matter.

Loving my FF lineup this week. Even with Reggie Wayne having a bye. Why?

My QB, defense & 1 RB play vs Oak
1 RB plays vs Atl
1 RB plays vs StL
My WRs play vs NYJ and SF

Anyone doubting his improvement can check the stats on NFL.com. He's already had three kicks that weren't returned (21%) compared to only six for all of last year (8%).

His kickoffs average 66 yards, compared to 58 yards last year. The return average is the same -- 20 yards, so on average Suisham has the opponents starting eight yards further from the 'Skins goal than last year.

I'm completely screwed with two QBs on a bye week. Everybody left in FA is not a starter. Question: Which starter QB in the NFL is most likely to get injured?

Woe is me.

****** Warning: Tipping Post *******

After three weeks, SMACK is still leading the Tipping competition. It's tightly contested at the top, with talent evaluator trailing him by only two tips, or whatever they're called. 4-12 and kost are only one tip further back and then it's a sharp dropoff. I won't name names, but nate, isnadd, bcbarney, zeese, etc., you guys are making it look too easy for the rest of us.

As a die-hard Skins fan I look to the blog for news and updates. I enjoy the fact that the Post is critical of the team and looks at both the players and the front office with a discriminating eye.

As a fan I am always optimistic about the team's future and as such I am not always realistic. I come here for an outside perspective from journalists not more love from fans. There are plenty of Skins fan sites to discuss the team if you are looking for a pick me up. But insider provides a different service. I don't always agree with some of JLC's posts but they certainly help offer a different opinion--when a lot of folks need to hear one.

Make your own decisions about the team but be prudent and view things through a wider lense. Sometimes we all need to take the rose-colored glasses off.

Furthermore, if you hate JLC and the Post's coverage of the skins so much why do you people continue to come to the blog? I would hope you could find something better to do with your day.

How come the tackle on Devin Thomas' reverse wasn't considered (or flagged) for a horse-collar penalty tackle?
