Redskins running back situation for Eagles game

By Jason Reid

Rookie running back Keiland Williams shouldered the load after halftime during the Redskins' 37-25 loss to Detroit in Week 8 at Ford Field.

With starter Ryan Torain sidelined in the second half because of a hamstring injury, Williams was the Redskins' only active running back. He had six rushes for 25 yards (a 4.2-yard average) and produced his first rushing touchdown.

It appears Torain will play Monday night against the Philadelphia Eagles at FedEx Field. The Redskins are not as optimistic about veteran back Clinton Portis, sidelined since suffering a severe groin tear in Week 4 against Philadelphia, playing against the Eagles.

Offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan would be comfortable if Williams played a key role again this week.

"With Keiland, we have been with him for awhile," Shanahan said. "He did a good job in the preseason and he stepped right in versus Detroit and had some real good runs. He did a good job."

Running back Chad Simpson, who primarily contributes on special teams, also could do more on offense against Philadelphia. "I have had Chad [Simpson] out here [in practice], but I have not seen him in a game," Shanahan said. "I don't really know about him, but if he gets his opportunity, I am confident he can do it."

And then there's James Davis, who was recently signed to the practice squad. The former Clemson standout has drawn interest from other teams, so the Redskins, eventually, may have to sign Davis to the active 53-man roster to retain him.

"He looks solid" in practice, Shanahan said. "He did a good job."

Zero information and a misleading "clever" headline. Dudes, it's not baseball. They don't have rainouts.

Devin Thomas inactive, again. After 6 weeks he's been inactive for all 4 games and he's their 6th string WR.

He's behind guys like S. Smith, D. Gettis, D. Clowney, B. Lafell, and A. Edwards at WR and behind J. Pugh as the KR.

People like DT, Marko, Mason, & Dockery need run for office in the DMV area when their football careers are over.

Marko who was cut by the Edmonton Eskimos and Mason who was cut by the Chargers are available to run now.

Aren't you the guy who was praying this time last year for a real GM to take over Vinny's job? Hope you're two for two on those prayers, Reverend.

Anyone see the J. Jones interview earlier? He said he doesn't have any feelings of embarrassment about their record, and doesn't feel he's made any major mistakes with the team. Here's hoping that he never gets a clue.

does not matter what d. thomas is doing on carolina he still did not step on the field with offense in the regular season with washington, galloway has 9 catches and r.williams has 2 after 8 games those numbers won't even match thomas' 25 catches the entire last year also thomas avg almost 27yds on kickoff return the 2 above wr's can't or don't play special teams. DIC-tater had a chance to bring a real wr on the team(owens, housmanzadeh or holmes)but only wants favorites and yes men many whom can not play at all.

If DT was such a world beater then he should have been able to beat out Armstrong, Galloway, Williams with the Skins and Gettis, Clowney, Lafell, and Edwards with the Panthers.

Give credit to the blocking on teams for his 27 YD average because BB is averaging 36 Yds and he can't beat out some dude named Pugh with the Panthers.

DT just can’t play.

From Boswell's column. Boz is about the only columnist left at WaPo that is still writing about the Redskins worth reading, with the occasional excerpt from hot bag o nickels...

"One reason Coach Mike Shanahan, offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan and quarterback McNabb have been so frustrated this season, and perhaps annoyed with each other, is because they have always been part of superior offenses. They don't realize they inherited a wreck of an attack at one of its lowest points with a lousy offensive line and, as usual, a lame group of wide receivers.

His last 10 years in Philadelphia, McNabb's teams averaged 376 points a year, sixth best in the league. And in his last 10 years in Denver, Shanahan's Broncos averaged almost as much - 370. They're new to the Redskins' offensive impotence - an average of only 291 points a year since '00 and just 265 and 266 in '08 and '09.

To McNabb and Shanahan, it's like somebody stole 100 points a year from them. Guys, stop scowling at each other. It's not you."

You forgot to make fun of the Brandon Lloyd lovers, too, you hypocritical buffoon.

You're Welcome!

You know, we can't all love Joey Galloway and Randle El and "proven" guys with long, established careers. Some of us like a guy who can play F'king Football... Even if he DOES make a video with a no talent "Diva."

Some of us think it odd that Malcolm Kelly, by pulling his hammy (again!) makes out better than a lot of the guys who were actually working to earn their paychecks.

Save it, Preacher.

I know, I know... Brandon Lloyd sucks. I know, you're right. Along with Jason Campbell, Leigh Torrance, Devin Thomas, Rock Cartwright, Randle El, Marko Mitchell, and Marcus Mason.

Did it ever occur to you that some of these guys sucked here because the Redskins suck? I mean, what does that make you, then? Your team sucks. It's not the players. It's you.

See? Something to think about. What is it that makes the Redskins consistently suck? Hmmm. Could it be that the fan base tolerates ridiculousness and bad personnel decisions? Hmmmm. Could it be that the fans buy the "He can't play" BS every time, only to see guys go and thrive on other teams?

You'd think they'd learn. But I guess what's good is everybody getting together on "REDSKINS INsider" to percolate all opinions into one solidified Scamp/Diesel/Beep opinion.

It's basically gotten us real far. Any dissenting voices will be ridiculed. Ridicule away, troll boys. I LOVE it. Most of you wouldn't know a decent football player if he carried a sign that said, "I'M A DECENT FOOTBALL PLAYER."

Don't worry. Shanny will tell you who is good. You can trust him. He's a genius.

PS - Chad Simpson is F'king fast so if you want speed in the backfield, you should be pushing for HIM. And if he does play and play well, as I expect, go think about why it took Shanadingle so long to put him into a game. The longer it takes to happen, the dumber ol' Shannie is going to look.

Go Skins!

Yes. Brady had all night to throw. And that was against the Steelers!

I don't agree Brady is the best QB in the NFL at all, however. He's accurate. I'll give him that. But, when all you have to worry about is being more accurate (instead of worrying about which 3 guys in front of you are going to miss their blocks next week and which RB will need help figuring out how to block on a blitz), life is probably a lot easier.

If you put most NFL QBs behind NE's line, you've got a Pro Bowler.

I say the best is Peyton Manning. He's calling out blocks, changing plays, he's deadly accurate, tough as hell, and he's had to learn with a mediocre O Line, intermittent running game, and this year with all back ups. No WAY Brady comes out of Indy's season upright. No way.

Right now, I hate to say it, Michael Vick seems to be the most dangerous QB in the game. Not only can he run, but he runs better than most punt returners (ahem, ahem, Randle El). He's gotten accurate, too. I fear this game will not go as well as the previous matchup.

Chances we knock Vick out of both games this year: Slim to None.

If Brady was QBing the Eagles tomorrow, I'd have no hesitation picking the Skins. But Vick? Smart money is on the Eagles.

PS - give some credit to RapePittsburgher. He's got a nice little skill set of his own. If you get an unassisted sack on him, you're a bad MF'er.

Posted by: Thinker_ | November 15, 2010 5:16 AM

So basically you're saying Brady is less dangerous than Vick because he can't run like a punt returner?

Disagree.

The Eagles are probably undefeated if he's got DJack and Maclin on the edges and McCoy out of the backfield. I still don't like their line but I think he could still get his in spite of it.

Vick provides an added dimension to the offense but I'm still not sold that he'll pick you apart from the pocket. I'll believe that when I see it against a good defense...lighting up the Lions and the Jags doesn't move me.

He's gone all year without throwing a pick...I'd venture to say he'll have a couple in this game. If we can't harass him into a couple big mistakes or at least edge out a division opponent we've already seen once this year...at home...coming off a bye...then this team just ain't what we thought it was. Even .500 teams should be able to handle that task, Vick or no Vick...

Posted by: brownwood26 | November 15, 2010 6:23 AM | Report abuse

I hope you're right, Brownwood. I really do. We'll see tonight! Vick with no interceptions is like my bills: Both are DUE!

I like it.

But Brady is overrated. I'm sure about that. You put him behind our line and we stink and he's hurt. Period.

It's hard to judge QBs in a vacuum. They're so dependent upon their line, their scheme, their run game, their receivers... But, Brady can barely get out of his own way and NFL QBs SHOULD be able to pick apart defenses when given 6-7 seconds to throw.

NE's line is nice. Pittsburgh's was banged up tonight, missing starters, and they're STILL way better than ours. Our O Line will be the ruin of the Redskins this year. Again.
