Redskins sign Darrion Scott, adding to the defensive line

The Redskins have signed yet another veteran defensive linemen, agreeing to terms with Darrion Scott, a defensive end who has been out of the league for two seasons, the team announced.according to a Sirius Radio report. Scott formerly played with Minnesota but spent last year in the United Football League.

Scott was a third-round draft pick by the Vikings in 2004 and played there until 2008, compiling 128 tackles and 9 1/2 sacks during that time. He spent last season playing with the UFL's Florida Tuskers, coached by Jim Haslett, the Redskins' new defensive coordinator.

In July 2008, Scott pleaded guilty to child endangerment for which he received a two-year stayed sentence.

Scott, an Ohio State product, is listed as a 6-foot-3, 289-pound defensive end.

The Redskins have stockpiled these veterans defensive linemen with the hopes that a couple could again make an impact in the league. Scott is the sixth veteran they've added to the D-line the past several weeks.

They previously traded for Adam Carriker and signed free agent contracts with Howard Green, Anthony Bryant, Maake Kemoeatu and Greg Peterson.

You are aware that for any of the things you mention here to happen, Rock would've had to have been given significant playing time at running back.

And neither he or Ladell Betts was but for Portis' injuries.

So whereas you have points to make, they can't be made when the guy never had a shot at running back.

And that's his point.

Plus, you really have to wonder about the culture of a team where guys who aren't fit and don't practice get playing time while those who are and do, don't.

It would make anybody whine like Rock did which is why I always liked Ladell Betts' approach to things during his time on the team.

It was obvious a few years ago when Betts get re-upped, he could be a fine running back in the league.

But he was a redskins' practice tackling dummy while Portis chilled on the sidelines.

Ladell kept his mouth shut, practiced hard, and is the kind of guy who'll make a fine coach one day.

And as for Rock, his head will always be hard.

I like these low budget moves. However, spending a little more money to get consistent performers like A Faneca, J Brown, or J Henderson would go a long way to adding flexibility and talent along the O and D lines.

The two times that was plausible ('08 & '09), we signed a Shaun Alexander look-a-like and then a fleet of practice squad types. I tend to think that this was Zorn outsmarting himself by 2 halves, and not because he couldn't do it.

I have two words for you: Adalius Thomas.
He's big, fast and would be great playing opposite Orakpo. He'd be a much better fit in the 3 - 4 than Andre Carter, and it would give the Skins a really nice matchup against Jason Witten.

If you put a bag over your head, you can't even see the Boogeyman coming. So yeah, you're damn right that's child endangerment. Give the kid a chance to run away from the Boogeyman. Everyone knows he walks slowly toward kids and waits for them to trip or freeze in panic. That's how he gets you.

from Wikipedia:

Scott was arrested on December 26, 2007 after officers discovered a small amount of Marijuana in his Chevrolet Tahoe. He was booked by Charleston police officers on misdemeanor marijuana possession charges.[1]

Scott was arrested again on April 30, 2008 for suspicion of assault and malicious punishment of a child. [2] Scott will face two felony charges and one misdemeanor charge. The boy's mother allegedly found Scott holding a dry cleaning bag over the child's head. Scott told police the two were playing a game with the bag, and Scott wanted to see if the boy could get the bag off his head by himself. He pleaded guilty to child endangerment and will be sentenced July 24.[3] The NFL suspended Scott three games for violating the league's conduct policy.
..........................

I'm all for redemption, and don't really care about the mj indicident... but the "child endangerment" thing is just plain weird. "playing a game with the bag"???

as Nate said, there has to be a line somewhere, and that crosses it for me. not welcome, hope he gets cut forthright.

While people have talked about how rich this draft was, you could have put together a big chunk of a team if you had relatively modest picks.

4th round pick: 15th rated QB
5th round pick: LB ernie sims, LB Kirk Morrison, RB/KR Leon Washington, WR/KR Ted Ginn

Adam Carriker DL was traded for a swap of 5th round picks.

Alan Faneca, etc are out there

I'm sure I missed a few, but that is a lot of guys who can play for not a lot of investment.

well, obviously one factor is that they haven't been very good since moving to fed ex. BUT another factor is that fed ex. is such a crappy stadium. besides the fact that it's in maryland!?!, the seats are too far from the field and the slope of the seats is too shallow. the stadium should be taller...with balconies bringing the upper decks closer. fans should be on top of the field! also, it's also so gosh darn symmetrical and sterile.

why in the world are you gonna sign Faneca, when you already have Hicks, set up to take the starting right guard job, unless it's for depth and he's not willing to be a back up right now, the skins need to find a starting right tackle, in they can't they have no choice but to go back to Heyer, for this season and then come next draft a right tackle.

Its now plain as day as to what they are going to do: they have "caved - in" to Haynesworth. When he does not feel like playing, gets winded, or needs a donut, they will rotate one of these Journeyman into the defensive line. Pressure on the QB ?? Not from this crew.... It will have to come from a LB....
