Redskins sign Greg Peterson, defensive lineman

Defensive lineman Greg Peterson, who has played 14 games in three seasons, has signed with the Redskins, the team announced Monday.

Peterson, 26, had his best season for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2007, playing in 10 games and being credited with 14 tackles, including 11 unassisted. He also had 1.5 sacks.

A fifth-round draft pick (No. 141 overall) of Tampa Bay in 2007, Peterson appeared in two games with the Jacksonville Jaguars last season. Peterson, who is listed at 6 feet 5, 315 pounds, was credited with one tackle for the Jaguars.

Sounds like he's a 3-4 DE based off of this:

Meet Greg Peterson
Position: DT/DE.

Height: 6-5.

Weight: 286.

College: North Carolina Central.

Highlights/stats: After two seasons at Hinds Community College (Miss.) and two at Division II North Carolina Central, Peterson was tabbed a "Hidden Gem" after he ran a 4.73 in the 40 yard dash. As a senior, he ranked 13th in the NCAA with 19.5 tackles for loss, including 7.5 sacks. He also had two fumble recoveries.

The verdict: Peterson will need some time to develop in terms of technique, but his combination of speed and strength make him a versatile addition to the Bucs' defensive front. He played mostly tackle in college, and the Bucs see him as a candidate to play under tackle, though he has the ability to move outside.

Jason Reid,
I think you have a habit of leaving out key information in your posts. Yes, in your post about Rogers and McIntosh, of course you should have addressed what happens if they don't sign their offers. In this post, given the key Haynesworth/Nose Tackle issue, how could you not mention whether Peterson is a Defensive End or Tackle?
Sincerely,
David

ps. I don't mean to make you feel bad; I just want good Redskins coverage :(

The team announced this on Monday and you're posting it on Thursday? How do you hold down a job? Seriously. Don't they have performance reviews at the Post?

Looking forward to your draft coverage. We should see the Thursday night first round pick posted on Monday night -- maybe Monday morning if you make it a rush job.

Looks like we are preparing ourselves for a battle of projects and scrubs for our 3-4 D-line; a Haynesworth trade looks more likely every day.

Another training camp body...

I know Allen isn't piling on the DTs in an effort to fool other teams into thinking we're ok at DT/NT without AH to try to gain leverage in efforts in trading him. No one's dumb enough to think anyone of the guys are capable of replacing him.

Maybe they are planning on running the NT position by commitee of mediocrity. Hoping Montgomery finally comes into his own this year; I always had high expectations for him coming out of college (of course I did for Colt, too, and we've seen how that panned out)

I just want to see the team win some fun, competitive games this year. A couple blowouts against division rivals would be nice, too!!

I don't get it. Why is RI posting what's on the mind of a fringe player like this turd? And this isn't the first or the second or the third time this has happened. If RI wants to do this "state of mind" shti why don't they post on the state of mind of somebody important, like AH or Santana Moss, or even somebody marginally important like say Carlos Rogers or Rocky McIntosh? But Malcom Kelly? Christ on a crutch.

Let me clue an ass hat like you in on censoring. It is not possible to filter out legit words like ass or dick that have more than one meaning. You can even play with scripting as when the fart ass becomes the far t as s. The ultimate irony is that the NYT wrote about George Carlin's "seven forbidden words" in his obituary but could not say what they were.

...and along comes some giant phukball with a meaningless post to try to make himself feel better about the sh!tty life he lives. I know! let's all look for an obviously meaningless post and then act like an expert on the matter. Hey shatbag, if you're gonna jump on someone, at least have it be for something that matters. I try not to attack people unless they say something stupid first (such as you just did.) You, on the otherhand, never learned the meaning of the word timing (neither, apparently did your mother or you wouldn't be here.) I tell you what, go finish artificially insemenating yourself with that applicator that looks like Rosie O'Donnell's knuckles (thanks Family Guy) and when you're finished maybe you can find a meaningful post to rip on. Ass hat huh? Way to be original, where'd you get that from? Three posts ago?

Sure hoping so, pabrian2003.

Not much in this world would make me happier than going 6-0 in the division (ok...a Superbowl on top of that would make about the best year ever).

They are simply bringing in people that they know are hard workers and know what to expect from tough coaches! I just hope that we can get a couple more players that will have some sort of impact. We

Maybe a miracle will happen on draft day and we can get rid of our baggage for a few extra picks. Maybe we should trade back and get some extra picks.

Thats my question! Would you rather have Okung or maybe trade back and get a lower first and a third. Personally I love the thought of having another Samuels type for the next 10-12 years, BUT we have so many needs and our picks have diminished thanks to vinny. I think I would trade back and take a chance on the best available tackle with the first pick and either linebacker or safety with the second pick.

Its a tough call, but whatever shanny decides to do I got his back! People dont remember what its like to have a real coach running the skins. Its obvious that shanny realized we had no depth behind all these "star players" cerrato signed. The depth is what makes the team stronger! The stars are just the faces of the team and when one of them get hurt the team starts falling apart. THANK GOD vinny is gone and the restoration to glory is finally underway!

To all of you nay-sayers that think nothing has changed... You will see the team play with swagger and discipline! People will be making assignments they missed before. Players will be accountable! Its a new regime and you will see results! Then you can shove all those nays where the sun dont shine!

HAIL!

Haynesworth to the Lions for the #2 pick.

'Skins draft Okung and either Suh, McCoy or Berry (less of a risk that high if you have two picks).

Or...

'Skins trade one or both of their top 5 (hypothetical) picks; take the best tackle available with their first pick and best player available with the next one. Or trade one of the acquired picks to the Ravens for Gaither.

My head hurts - I wish the draft was already past...

Posted by: stevebeagrie | April 16, 2010 5:12 AM | Report abuse

Were this to happen, and Albert were reunited with Jim Schwartz and Kyle van den Bosch - would that be the toughest division in the NFL?

Vikings - loaded and came within a possession of making the Superbowl. Ridiculously good lines, on both sides of the ball.

Packers - improving team under Rogers, made playoffs. Need to draft a couple of quality players (they have depth), rather than having multiple holes to fill.

Bears - big spenders, plenty of big-time players. Defense will be better. Cutler settles down and throws fewer picks.

Lions - potentially very tough Defense, Stafford grows into quality starter.

Yikes.

Nice size but is it just technique that kept him off the field? What about injury history or off-field history?

I'm starting to see where the other posters give you static for not providing certain info. DStein seems to be better at this...

Greg Peterson = Depth.

The good part about signing a FA who's been in the league a couple of seasons is that you pretty much know what you're getting. The bad part is that you pretty much know what you're getting.

Takes some of the romance out of it. If Peterson were a senior this year, we could have a spirited discussion about the wisdom of drafting him as a developmental guy from a small school program. We could argue about whether Shanahan was going to neglect linemen the way Vinny did or if we were finally going to turn a corner and accede that the fans know best, because after all, they're fans.

As is, we can't. All we can presume is that Shanahan has acquired three D-linemen in the space of a few weeks and has offered Albert Haynesworth to Philadelphia, so he's probably not going to draft any more interior d-line types with the few selections he has remaining.

I'm always amazed by these polls in which the media wants to know what fans think will happen next. Such as today's on whether McNabb will lead the Skins to the playoffs this year, within 3 years, or never. The only rational answer to that question is "I dunno." Because we don't. Neither does Mike Shanahan, Bruce Allen, Mike Wilbon, George W Bush, or anybody who posts on this blog.

So it must be purely for entertainment's sake.

goskinsgo1

I'm not seeing the big change in how the front office is handling this off season. The Skins just gave away the 37th pick overall for a 33 year old QB who's numbers have not been all that impressive the past few seasons. Looks a lot like Cerrato work from over here. Bringing in veteran FAs with little left in the tank versus building through the draft feels just like what the organization has been doing for the past 10 years.

I agree it will be nice to see some discipline with this regime. But I have yet to see a signing that makes me think some sort of "restoration" is under way. Hope I'm wrong.
