Redskins sign Rex Grossman

Updated, 10:16 a.m.

The Redskins have signed quarterback Rex Grossman to a one-year contract.

Grossman spent last season in Houston as a backup to Matt Schaub. With the Texans, he worked under the Redskins' new offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan and also with Washington quarterback coach Matt LaFleur, so the Redskins' staff knows exactly what it's getting.

On the surface, the signing might seem like a simple replacement. The team released Todd Collins, its long-time backup, earlier this month, and Grossman could fill that role. But many believe the Redskins will chase a quarterback in the NFL Draft next month, which could leave the team with Jason Campbell, Rex Grossman and Jimmy Clausen/Sam
Bradford six weeks from now. (Throw Colt Brennan into that mix, if you'd like.) If they do draft a quarterback, it'd seem like the team could have an expendable quarterback on its hands.

Grossman, 29, was Chicago's first-round pick in 2003 but wasn't regularly starting until 2006, when he helped the Bears reach the Super Bowl. Though the Bears were a team that relied heavily on its defense, the 2006 offense scored the second-most points in the NFL. By the end of the next season, though, Grossman had lost his starting job to Kyle Orton.

He joined the Texans in 2009 as a free agent. He appeared in just one game last season, completed 3 of 9 passes for 33 yards. If you want to get technical about it, his 5.6 passer rating on the season was a career low. He has started just one game since 2007.

A Terrapin is a type of carnivorous turtle native to the state of Maryland. Maryland had been referring to itself as the "Old Liners" until 1932 when football coach H.C. Byrd recommended the Diamondback Terrapin as mascot in response to the student newspapers search for one. Byrd had apparently had run-ins with this type of snapping turtle during his childhood.

It's too bad League-Source was only 5 in 1932 she could have been an "old timer" who was an "old liner" who never quite mastered the "one liner".

No NEws...We already knew this was gonna happen...

Grossman will be the #3 QB and On The Field 'Coach' who will help the other O players understand the offense.

They are running Kyle's Offense, not Shannys'...but they are branches on the same tree....

Not a signing we will see much about... but I'm just waiting till like week 6 when we hear the first "Bring in Rex chant"... cause skins fans love to hate on our starting QB no matter who it is...

Lo Alexander has the speed to play linebacker. I'm not sure about his coverage skills, but the dude has speed for someone his size.

They never said which LB spot Lorenzo would be playing. Inside or outside? He has the beef to play inside, but does he have the pure speed and agility to play outside?

I thought they mentioned OLB, but I agree with you, Devo, I think he would make a better ILB. Good bulk, better run stopper, not so much on coverage.

Anyone want to take the over/under on when fans will start crying for Grossman to replace Campbell?

Don't care what type of ties he has to the current staff. Grossman is poop garbage. End of discussion.

All this does is just fuel the Campbell doubters/haters.

And we all can use a few more fixes of that.

*ugh*

Well, he is a veteran and spent a year learning the system that's going to be installed. That's all the bright side I've got.

Posted by: walkdwalk | March 17, 2010 10:06 AM | Report abuse

stop freaking out morons. Rex isn't here to be anything but a #2 at best but probably a #3 and help the other QBs learn the system he just spent a year in.....its a 1 year league minimum contract. Better than paying TC millions.

Funny how in this extremely weak FA pool, we're doing a better job than we did before with deep FA pools.

This is how you build a team... you make depth signings with cheap, experienced veterans, while you build the team piece by piece thru the draft...

There it is, ladies and germs: The Redskins QB problems have been solved! Now we certainly don't need to worry about drafting a QB and we could even trade Jason Campbell... let's package him to St. Louis for that Carriker fellow. Rex Grossman, Super Bowl quarterback, is going to lead the burgundy and gold back to the promised land!

He's cheap, knows the offense. Will be nothing but a backup/mentor/tutor to Campbell or a rookie if we draft one. Not only that, the does provide real camp compeition. He's always inpressed coaches and players alike in camp, but he just couldn't play on sunday.

For those purposes it's not a bad move. It'll make the transition for the QB spot easier for whom ever plays.

The best quote I've heard in a long time..."if you listen to the fans, then you'll be watching with the fans"

This tells me Bruce and Shannahan are doing what THEY know is best for this team. Not us arm chair monday morning qb's/madden gm's.

I wonder, too.

Let's look at Rex's numbers:

career 37 971 524 54.0 26.2 6,197 (yards) 33 (tds)

And Colt's:

0 (yds.) 0 (tds) 0 (gms.)

You're right, it is a wonder abour about why Shanny thinks Rex is better than Colt.

Posted by: MistaMoe | March 17, 2010 10:10 AM | Report abuse

Well, I guess we don't have to worry about fans begging for the backup this year. JC should feel very safe in his job.

Posted by: terpin | March 17, 2010 10:11 AM | Report abuse

Really, for the right price anyone makes sense. A guy like joey, if signed to an incentive based contract, he wouldn't be the worst thing. I think Shanny should be able to handle his attitude... plus after his release from Miami hopefully he'll be looking to prove that he isn't the pain in the butt everyone thinks he is... but thats probably doubtful.

Posted by: peoplearestupid1 | March 17, 2010 9:37 AM | Report abuse

I agree, stupid. After all, he had 9 sacks last year. Doesn't sound over the hill quite yet. As long as the contract is minimal, with lots of incentives, I'm ok with him.

Posted by: frediefritz | March 17, 2010 10:11 AM | Report abuse

I thought the idea was to make the team better. Don't get this signing at all.

At least Jason knows he doesn't have to look over his shoulder this year, unless of course they draft a QB in round 1.

for all the jason campbell haters, look at the free agent list above. JC doesn't look that bad now does he? my argument has always been he is a serviceable QB. if Grossman is brought in to run the show, lord help us.

I agree with Moe and Flounder, I dont think this is a bad move. I like him better than Colt, he has experience, has won and that I think equals a pretty serviceable Backup QB...whats the problem again?

I hope Colt gets cut and we draft Pike late in the draft.

Posted by: mhartz1 | March 17, 2010 10:15 AM | Report abuse

4th, what is this fascination with spiller... I do not deny that the man is fast, was a solid returner and was a decent rb... but predicting him to go 4th is kind of ridiculous. He was never the breakout STAR that CJ was in college, but was solid and consistent...

He may turn out to be the next CJ... but he is small and its extremely risky to bank on a RB of his size.... it only takes 1 big hit to derail that theory. I do not see him going in the top 10, and even top 15 would surprise me. We may draft him... but only if we are able to trade down.

Grossman signed, but not as a backup.

When the Redskins singed Rex Grossman on Wednesday, most assumed it was due to his familiarity with the offense that the Redskins will be installing, and to help Jason Campbell learn it. Not so fast however. Our sources inside Ashburn have confirmed that Mike, and Kyle Shanahan brought Rex in to be the starter for the 2010 season. Stay tuned.

Umm, did the WaPo just “break” this (aside from it being reported on the official skins blog)?

Maybe they just want to tell Snyder that they got that QB from Florida, so he thinks it is a splashy move and will keep quiet for a few more weeks. Apparently Allen and Shanny have him tied up and locked up in a dungeon somewhere…..

Saying he led the Bears to the super bowl is kind of misleading. He had more turnovers than TDs. He pretty much just hung on for the ride and didn't derail the train.

Who would have thought that a Rex Grossman signing would have brought so many first time posters (sawdustforbrains, batsinthebelfry, outtolunch, etc.) and all with the same reaction? These are the guys who, in the old days, would post anonymously and -- judging by their posts -- with good reason.

This may not be a real story. I'm thinking that Cindy made it up so that she could get more people registered. Shrewd move, Cindy.

Posted by: League-Source | March 17, 2010 10:20 AM | Report abuse

A smart move considering the facts:

1- We needed a back up QB (although I strongly disagreed with cutting Collins)

2- Grossman is not good, but he was the best back up free agent available, "talent" wise

3- We needed a PLAYER on the team familiar with K. Shannahan's system

This feels like a one or two year deal... keep him around to help teach the players, maybe he gets in a game when Campbell gets hurt, then cut him once we draft our QB of the future.

Remember, we gonna suck this year, so we will have a high draft pick next year to get a QB (or a Tackle if we go QB this year).

Rebuilding takes time!

I think signing Grossman paves the way to draft QB this year and say goodbye to JC 17. Depending on who (or how high) you draft QB, Grossman acts like a second coach for the new guy because he already know the system and alignments, and can step in as starter for a while should the kid either not develop fast enough / falter along the way / get hurt.

No way anyone will confuse Grossman as the future/franchise guy.

Jason could be draft day trade bait, we'll see if there are any takers...

According to my Mock Draft, The 2 Most ideal value picks will be gone. Bradford and Okung. You CAN NOT get the 2nd best LT @ #4.

You have to go to your next big value pick worthy of top 5 pick. Which would be RB - Home Run Hitter Category....which we do not have with CP or LJ....

Spiller is already starting to jump as high as #6 now. And we are STILL more than a month away......

If everybody waited to see what happens, there would be NO BLOG. Posting opinions and having a conversation is the purpose of the blog genius.

All the different perspectives, attitudes and levels of enthusiasm make this a great place to visit and join the din.

Perhaps you have something else you can contribute besides your condemnation?

If campbell does NOT pick up the offense fast (and he has been slower than spit in doing so with the other regimes) shanahan and the boys will start grossman. thats all this is. hell no, they are not going draft a QB. Why should shanahan and his coaches make more work for themselves? A rookie QB will not immediately help them, Campbell has to learn again for the umpteenth time, and grossman knows whats expected of him.

I have no problems with this signing. The Skins needed a veteran backup for Campbell, Grossman has worked with KShan, knows the offense and can be a serviceable backup/quasi-coach, ala Collins. As has been pointed out, the UFA QB market is pretty brutal this year and Grossman is one of the few that is worth a contract. And it is only a one year deal.

While I would have probably preferred Anderson, because I think these is more upside to him, this is another smart signing of a serviceable veteran, who was signed on the cheap.

I see the draft as to where the Skins are going to make their biggest impact. Whether it is grabbing Okung or trading down. I would peg either of those scenarios at 50-50 now.

Posted by: NosferatusCoffin | March 17, 2010 10:43 AM | Report abuse

They signed Grossman because he knows the offense. He's an experienced back up for this offense system. That doesn't mean he's a good QB and that this is a good pick up...it just means they want some insurance in case JC doesn't pan out in the system.

And if they really liked him, they would have signed him to a long-term deal...I think there's still a chance they are gunning for a QB in the early rounds of the draft.

Posted by: bgmathis | March 17, 2010 10:44 AM | Report abuse

Any one who is upset is an absolute idiot. All rex is is a guy who can come in who already know kyles offense just like todd collins came in cause he knew al saunders offense. It is a benifit to all the quarterbacks on the redskins to have a qb who knows the system so he can help out campbell and colt and a qb if draft one on things the coach does not have time to teach and little thngs about the offense.

4th, I hadn't seen him going as high as 6th... but.... and I agree RB is one of the top positions that is acceptable to draft in the top 5... to me, for us to take a RB with the top 5 pick it would have to be someone who is a no brainer. Someone who is without a doubt going to be a solid top 5 rb (and is that ever the case with any prospects??) at the absolute worst and the thing about spiller is he could just as easily become the next Darren Sprols or Reggie Bush or Steve Slaton... backs that just aren't worth a top 5 pick, let alone a 1st round pick... There are lineman who could go 4 over him... i think there are 3 Tackles who could possibly go in the TOP 10... not including campbell who should be a 4th round pick but will likely get picked 8th by the raiders...

Im not disagreeing with you that hes not a homerun threat and has the potential to be a game changer... but its too big of a risk for a franchise in our situation... maybe if we were set on the oline and QB position... but seeing as we have so many other needs... and with Shannys history of drafting RBs in the 4th round or later... I just cant see it.

Anderson would be a dumb pick up: He would think he was here to actually compete for playing time.

Grossman knows his place, and is grooming himself as a Coach under BOTH Shanahans.

Little Shanny is going to be a head NFL Coach one day just like his dad. Grossman is signing himself up now to continue being his Kubiak.

Agreed.

Rex ain't great and Rex ain't bad.

Rex doesn't have to be anything but tutor Campbell in the offense, and hand the ball off should JC get hurt.

Besides, his signing reflects a very methodical and low cost approach to replenishing the roster with fresh faces and capable alternatives.

The roster is being turned over before our very eyes, and we like what we see.

This isn't exactly the same thing Campbell went through before. The first big change Campbell endured was learning a pro offense coming out of college. That's tough for any young QB. Then he had to go from a Coryell Gibbs scheme to a WCO offense. That's also a major change. This is just another variation of the WCO offense. All he's doing this time around is just learning new plays. He won't be dealing with completely different throwing mechanics, terminology, footwork, and protection schemes.

As far as Grossman...

that's not the same as he flat out sucks

He can be a fine back-up

JC17 will be our QB

Even if Okung is gone, Trent Williams is going to be a real good pro

Or simply trade down

I don't think Shanny has many throw-away years left. He won't waste any of his time investing-in/coaching-up Campbell. Shanny will draft/trade for his QB this year. I get a feeling that a deal for Campbell has already been worked out with the Bills/Rams/Panthers. Maybe Campbell & Carter for Carriker & 3rd or 4th round pick. Grossman will start the first half of this season. Bradford/Clausen will take over about week 11.

I don't see that at all. Shanahan of all coaches knows you can find RB's later in the draft. A 195lb rb at #4 when you've got a crappy oline? I'd rather they grabbed Baluga. Although trade down possibilities might increase in that scenario with one of the DT's (McCoy or Suh) sitting there at #4.

This is the end for Campbell... Grossman fills that backup role and the Skins will draft a QB!!! Hopefully Clausen at 4.. but if not in second round. So why keep Campbell??? There is no role for him. Colt is cheap to keep as a number three and considering the boat load of money the new QB will get why would the Skins want to pay Campbell to. What everyone should be happy at is the fact that this pushes us closer to the idea of NO QB with the #4 pick!!!

There will be other QB's in free agency and stuff will happen, but overall this makes me a little happy because we can get away from all this talk about QB's with the #4 pick.

Dont see how this brings an end to campbell? I do not see Sexy Rexy being annointed the starter... JC is a stop gap player clearly... Shanny will go get his own QB either this year or next. But why does signing a backup QB mean Campbell has no place? Signals the end for campbell???? Rexy is worse than campbell, his only positive quality is that he has a year in Kyles system. He is exactly what Todd Collins was to the skins, what 5 years ago when we signed him??? His role is to come in, show the team how the new system works and then sit on the bench and help players when they are confused...

Campbell is still the stop gap starter and still the man who is going to have to pick himself up off the ground every 3rd play.

We are not going to see the same Shanahan. This is a new Gen one. Just because he never used a high draft pick on a RB won't mean he won't use one on Spiller if he is determined by the scouts/coaches that he is the kind of game changer the offense needs.

Currently...they have non.....And I have allen of the Bulaga bandwagon...something about his frame throws me off....The Burger King commercial of the dude with the small hands always omes to mind when I see him.....

Posted by: 4thFloor | March 17, 2010 11:12 AM

I just think their needs are much greater along the o-line than to grab a small (but talented) RB. If not Bulaga maybe one of the other OT's or trade down with McCoy/Suh sitting there. We've seen trade ups for DT's in the recent past - New Orleans did it for the kid from USC.

What's with all these guys with little hands issues. First it's Clausen, now Bulaga.

I dont see this as a smoke screen to releasing campbell/ or trading him... I do not think hes going anywhere. We needed a back up Qb... Sexy Rexy has experience in this scheme and Kyle knows exactly what he has in Rexy... its a no brainer. Campbell will still be the starter, and drafting a QB is no more or less likely than it was yesterday... It depends on if Shanny thinks one of these boys is the future or not... has NOTHING TO do with this signing.

JC is only getting traded if we are offered a 1st (or MAYBE a high 2nd) on or before draft day, which is unlikely.

Otherwise, it will probably be OL-OL.

Todd Collins played very well for the skins, so not sure why he is replaced with a younger, but far less consistant Grossman. Plus, this guys is painful to watch - Jason Campbell is 10 fold better than Grossman and no one is statisfied with him. Mike Shannan - what's up???

Posted by: skins10 | March 17, 2010 11:52 AM | Report abuse

What they said about Grossman in Chicago is that he looks All-World in practice, which is how he kept beating people out. Orton looks ordinary during the week but much better on game day.

Rex is not a bad guy off the bench because he's a pure passer and can bring a team back. Not so much for protecting a lead, however.

Correction: It's Jason Campbell phase, not "era."

The word 'era' suggests titles, rings, play off wins, divisions locked up in early November, Super Bowl...etc.

All we've had under Campbell has been a phase of coulda, woulda, shudda, maybe, no blocking, not on the same page, Cooley's marriage, injuries in the line and backfield, sudden firings, 400 page playbooks, Brunnell's sideline offense, sudden retirings, Fred Davis leaping at a single bound, over throws to open guys, Portis throwing folks under a bus, fumbles, and Zorn's weirdo dodgeball passing drills.

All that is a phase we hope has come to pass.

How is signing of Grossman posturing? And how is this move going to push the skins closer to a trade of JC? The only teams that need qbs badly are the Bills, Browns, and Rams. None of those teams will be willing to give up their first or second round pick to a guy on a one year deal. Do you think JC is going to sign an extension with any of those teams and set himself up for failure? For those of you wanting JC out of town you better hope that the Vikings are looking for Favre insurance. Otherwise you are stuck with JC for another year.

Draft Okung, he will be there at 4.

For 2 years, Campbell never really could pick up Saunder's new system, albeit a voluminous Playbook ..
Collins, who worked with Saunders in previous years, did very well in Practice implementing the Playbook (according to Gibbs). But the Playbook was eventually simplified for 2007, and Campbell continued to start. This was mostly due to the fact that Campbell was a huge investment (3 picks, salary and signing bonus).
Only when Campbell was injured did Collins, get to Start.
Fast forward to 2010. If Campbell cannot show a decent grasp of Kyle's Playbook by opening game, he has a problem. Shanny and Kyle didnt pick him. JC will not have the advantage of Gibbs who HAD to make him successful. Gibbs put his reputation and neck on the line by convincing the Skins to move up the Draft for him.

If, by the first game of the regular season, Campbell isnt comfortable, with Kyle's Playbook (ie. another new system), Rex starts for the Skins.

250+ is being generous. Last season he was playing at 285+. At that weight, he needs to be Julius Peppers athletic.

Anyone remember Alexander 'covering' Brian Westbrook out of the backfield two years ago only to have a sniper snatch his hamstring as Westbrook eased away?

I don't see this working at all, unless Alexander undergoes a total body transformation. Either that or he takes VERY sparing reps at OLB with an extremely limited set of assignments (i.e. bullrush the passer).

Take a look at the current roster - you can't not draft a starting OT at #4. Even if you did take a LT at #4, you'd still be hard pressed to take a RT at #37.

At minimum you are missing a starting LT, starting RT, and a back up LT (could probably get away with A.Hicks there).

In terms of the draft everything else has to wait. The offensive line is just too rickety. It's been neglected for years.

There are 2 Chris Johnson's in the league. One is rb for Tenn, one is cb for Oakland. So what? There was only one OJ in the league, only one Eric Dickerson. Spiller will most likely not become a 2000 yd rusher.

And of course there are at least 10 OT that could start. Most of them would suck, but they could start. You rarely get a starter at LT outside of the first 2 rounds.

Yes, it really is easier to get a good rb than left OT in the later rounds. In fact, many good rb's are drafted later in the draft. You just don't see many OT's start at LT in their rookie year.

Kyle Callahan is projected to be drafted in 4th round. He will most likely be a project. Most 4th round OT's are projects. They might become a starter, but not in rookie year.

Um, it's was Westbrook he was trying to cover, and not Le'Ron McClain.

Westbrook made a lot of dudes look like their hamstring was just clipped by a sniper over the years.

Besides, he was doing something that he wasn't use to doing. They probably didn't have him dropping back into coverage that much.

If they're going to use him exclusively at OLB, then I expect that he'll improve.

I disagree. Only a few of these guys can start next year at LT. I count only 4 and they'll be gone by pick #15.

Russell Okung
Bryan Bulaga
Trent Williams
Charles Brown.

Anthony Davis, Bruce Campbell, Roger Saffold, Jared Veldheer, Tony Washington need a lot of development and are only seen as having left tackle potential.

Jason Fox is coming off an injury and had an irregular heartbeat. Kyle Calloway is a right tackle only prospect.

I do agree that we can find a right tackle later in the draft though. I'm saying we need to take the best left tackle available at #4 and then take a right tackle whenever we can. I could live with a 4th or 5th round right tackle.

Yes, it really is easier to get a good rb than left OT in the later rounds. In fact, many good rb's are drafted later in the draft. You just don't see many OT's start at LT in their rookie year.

Backup QB who knows the offense nothing to see here. This is actually a good sign it means they will most likely not draft a QB.

Posted by: Flounder21

Why? Because Grossman and Brennan are unexpendable?

I seriously doubt Shanahan will make that decision until the top two draftable QB's have their workout day.

If he sees even a hint of Eloway in either, he'll pick 'em.

Personally, I'm still hoping for a trade back, and an Oline rebuild.

"There was only one OJ in the league"
---------
I assume you're referring to OJ Anderson.

As to this whole line of reasoning, well you could also draft a starting QB in the 5th round. All Shanahan has to do is draft him and start him. Yes, there are busts at every position, but, in spite of the Heath Shulers and Tony Mandariches among us, in theory you should be more likely to get a quality player, whether he's a QB or LT, with a top 5 pick. We are desperate for a quality starting LT.

Posted by: closer44 | March 17, 2010 12:33 PM | Report abuse

At minimum you are missing a starting LT, starting RT, and a back up LT (could probably get away with A.Hicks there).

In terms of the draft everything else has to wait. The offensive line is just too rickety. It's been neglected for years.

Posted by: ElSith | March 17, 2010 1:05 PM | Report abuse

I hope this means we will draft Okung or trade back from the 4 spot to recoup our 3rd rounder spent on Jarmon. This draft is too deep with quality offensive linemen in the top two rounds and we need to fill both OT spots. Heyer is good to have as a backup since he can play both positions in a pinch but he is absolutely not starter material.

SkinsneedaGM,

I agree that any QB should have the offense down by game 1. Am not sure though that is a problem of Campbell.

But, if you are correct and he just dosen't get it, then he can't be your QB.

I think Campbell has the intell, it's the moxy that he lacks. He has no gunslinger, no let it ride, not enough cockiness on the field.

A good QB has to translate the confidence to his offensive players and that's where I think he falls short.

If Shanahan can transfer that one thing to Campbell then boy we have got ourselves a winner.

Rex was an obvious signing. He knows the system and is a servicable QB. Rex can come in a game with few reps and take over if starter is injured during a game without much loss: Perfect backup QB resume.

Rex's problem was different and IMHO much worse than Campbell's. Campbell is a fair QB, but consistent. Campbell unlikely to lose the game, but also won't be able to pull out a miracle in the 4th qtr to win one either.

Rex is just the opposite. Seems to have good skill and sometimes plays great. But way too many times plays like a total chump. That inconsistency is what has cost him so far. In Chicago they hoped his roller-coaster play would level off, but it never did.

A fair description of Campbell and I also always felt that if we needed drives at the end of games to win, our goose was cooked.

However, this does not prevent Campbell from running a successfull offensive gameplan that scores the ball where the last 4th Quarter drive to win becomes moot.

Shanahan might bring the type of Offense that wins game outright moreso than the last minute variety. Lets hope so.

What the jc haters have said is Jason Campbell is not smart qb and cant read routes but that is all false. Campbell might be one of the smartest qb's in this league. Despite learning over 8 offense in his career he continues to grow as a gb with a his ceiling is high up. Grossman brings all things JC haters complain about Campbell holding onto the football which campbell does less off now then prevous seasons. this signing means nothing Grossman will be the backup and if there is a competition and if Campbell is continuing to progress this wont be close. But if the reason Grossman will start cause kyle shanahn then im out and i would advise JC to ask fo ra trade because any team in NFL besides top 10 teams could use a guy like him

Al Saunders brought Todd Collins, now Kyle Shannahan brings Grossman. The GENIUS and his George Allen replacement also brought over a personality player, Larry Johnson, because the other personality player, Clinton Portis, is a sad sack. Yup, it's looking like another stunning year for the Redskins.

Oh, I almost forgot the Redskins are switching the more AFC focused 3-4 defense, which sounds pretty much like the switch a couple of years ago to the much vaunted West Coast offense. A new system will fix everything.

Somebody, please, get the pictures of Dan Snyder with the goats, please. Publish them now, it's the only way forward for this team.

I hope the Skins are positioning themselves for a great draft next year. We could lock down the #1 and take Jake Locker. I could suffer through another dismal year to stock the OLine now and get Locker, and/or Mark Ingram. I think 2011 will be the real begining. Look for 5 & 11 in 2010. Boy, does this stink.

Here, in Chicago, for the past week I have been laughing at all my Cub-loving friends, and how they got stuck with Soriano and his enormous contract. Now, after a few days of watching them squirm while they stare at their shoes, the tables have been turned. Dutifully, they smirk as they come by my office to remind me just how awful Rex Grossman had been as a member of the Chicago Bears, and to chuckle that the Skins had signed him.
Kyle Shanahan and Matt LaFleuar think they know how he'll perform because of his practices in Houston? Grossman has always been a great "practice" quarterback -- that's why he was the starter here for so many years. But come game time, he would predictably make the errant pass into triple coverage. He thought we was Brett Favre from the mid-90s when he was really Billy Kilmer.

Arggh. Just, please, please, please don't sign any more Bears' castoffs.

Pfft, this is a smart move. By the end of this season the Bears will be frothing at the mouth to trade Cutler and get Grossman back. Its easier to see your QB throwing 20+ ints in a season if your expectations are much lower... So it will work out and all the skins fans who wanted to bring Cutler to Washington will get their wish fulfilled.

Posted by: ozpunk | March 17, 2010 4:41 PM | Report abuse

Just give Colt a chance... It's funny because if he would've come out after his junior year, the "experts" were saying at the time that he would've been a late 1st or 2nd round pick. He stuck around for his senior year, led them to an undefeated season and a birth in the, I believe, Sugar Bowl. Imagine, Hawaii in a BCS bowl! We always complain about the Skins having a bad O-line. That's nothing compared to what Hawaii had to deal with against Georgia's defensive front in that Bowl game. As soon as he snapped the ball, there were 2-3 guys on him within a second! It was like a jail break. When compared to Hawaii that game, Campbell had an eternity to throw with his offensive line last year. Due to that one game, he get penalized and is a late draft pick who can be cut without management getting grief. If he would've been a 1st or 2nd round pick, management is basically obligated to have him around for at least 3+ years so that they don't get blamed for drafting him, especially since he's a QB no less. Campbell has gotten every opportunity possible to become a starter because one of the big reasons is because he was a first round pick. It's pretty obvious. All I'm saying is just give the guy a chance...

I must admit that Colt has the swagger that a QB needs, but he dosen't have the tools that Campbell has.

It is easier for Campbell to acquire the swagger than it is for Colt to acquire the tools.

Grossman does have swagger but he can't handle the pressure.

In any competition on the ground with a Coach that knows his cowpie Campbell will win hands down.

Have any of you thought about this?

They will pick a QB at 4.

Then TRADE Campbell for a 3rd round pick.

Starter will be the QB picked, with Grossman as a backup, and Brennan as the #3.

Campbell's value will never be any higher than it is now. IF we keep him, he'll be benched by the 8th week. The first round pick will start then. We then lose Campbell to free agency and get nothing for him.

I see this as a good signing.

The real reason that campbell didnt pick up saunders play-book and collins did is because collins was in his offense for 5-7yrs nothing strange about that, there will be no big changes in the new offense for campbell this year and the receivers(kelly, davis, mitchell and thomas)will catch on quickly by dent of 2yrs experience. I have said this before if wash. drafts a qb this year and campbell is still here to compete he will beat out all qb's for the starting job..deal with it. DRAFT OKUNG WITH 4TH PICK OR TRADE DOWN. fix o-line and start winning stay the same and keep losing. one more thing if rabach and heyer are starters on this line in 2010 that is a SURE sign of a losing season.

This is a very disturbing development. Rex Grossman flat sucks. Period.

Rex is the best back up they could find.
He is capable of coming in and throwing 5 picks.
HAS ANYONE EVER HEARD FROM THE TEAM THAT THEY WERE INTERESTED IN DRAFTING A QB WITH THE #4 PICK? THIS IS CRAPPOLA FOSTERED BY THE PRESS AND THOSE CLOWNS ON ESPN.
Bradford..even if he is available.. has a questionable shoulder. If you blow the #4 pick it could hurt your team for 4-5 years.
Remember there are always good QB`s not taken in the first rounds. they most likely will re-sign JC as no one will give up a number one choice for him. He will be OK for the next couple of years.
I AGREE WITH SOME OTHER BLOGGERS..GIVE COLT A REAL SHOT.

From a Chicago Bears Fan: Rex is a great signing for the Skins. I've watched Rex play all through his Chicago career, and what I can tell you Skins fans is this:

#1) His upside is huge. In 2006 he led the BEars to a Super Bowl, and had 7 games where he had over a 100 QB Rating.

2) He never had any #1 receiver in Chicago.

3) The Bears offensive line sucked

4) The Bears had zero running game in 2007 when they let Thomas Jones go in favor of Cedric Benson

5) Was a teammate favorite in the locker room

6) Strong cannon arm

On the opposite side, when he does have bad games, they have been awful! But he never had as bad as games at Kyle Orton and Jay Cutler.

Just look at Jay Cutler's stats in Denver and then how bad he has been in Chicago! That's what happens to Chicago Bears QB's! So, yes, Rex is extremely capable and proved he can lead a team to the Super Bowl and have great games and provide leadership.
