Redskins sign six to reserve contracts

By Jason Reid

The Redskins signed six players to reserve/futures contracts to retain their rights for the offseason, including 2009 draft pick Selvish Capers, the team announced Tuesday.

Washington selected Capers, who is 6 foot 5 and 315 pounds, in the seventh round (231st overall) of the 2010 draft. He did not make the opening 53-man roster, but was signed to the practice squad.

In addition to Capers, the Redskins signed tackle Xavier Fulton, wide receiver Taurus Johnson, running back Shawnbrey McNeal, wide receiver Maurice Price and defensive lineman Rashaad Duncan.

Players signed to reserve/futures contracts usually have spent most of the previous season on practice squads.

I will NOT be posting after this so rest assured if you see anything under Lisa (or anyone else pretending to be me) it's a FAKE trying to get something started.

That being said - my one final word before departing is: SCampbell, WHY in the world do you feel that you are RIGHT about everything? Who died and made you the Blog God??? You attack me and others on this blog who do not agree with you. You are on the blog 24-7 (no job?) and continually write derogatory comments about anyone with a different opinion than yours. You are immature - get over yourself.

That said, I'm out....will not be returning as Lisa, only Risa.

Good!

I'm looking for Capers and Cooke to provide some solid competition in camp and maybe win a spot or two next season.

Meanwhile, we still need to draft more O line...

Didn't say he sucks...I said I despised him, and that even with the high standards academic standards he has consistently had a top 3 recruiting class for the last decade. You would think that with those recruiting classes he would develop more quality NBA players.

But hey, I'm biased and blinded by hate.

Just catching up on the last few posts and had a couple thoughts:

-John Elway should shut his cakehole. Any endorsement from him is hollow since he's about to become a league-wide laughingstock now that he's gonna run the Broncos. What he's about to do in Denver will rival anything we've seen Michael Jordan do to the Wizards or Dan Snyder to the Redskins. You heard it here first. My only hope is that Broncos fans have their paper bag helmets ready...

-London Fletcher is easily the most underrated player in the NFL. I've said it before and I'll say it again...dude has been every bit the player Ray Lewis has been in the NFL. The only problem is he's played for multiple teams, most of them not very good. If he danced and preached before every game and in front of every open mic like Lewis, they'd be carving his Hall of Fame bust right damn now.

-I don't wanna hear a word from Malcolm Kelly until the following firsts happen for him: finish an entire training camp without getting hurt, play well enough to EARN a spot on a 53-man roster, and catch a touchdown. When you can do all 3 of those, then you may speak. Until then, get your ass in the weight room...and for the love of God, stretch before you work out...

See ya in the morning, RI.

At this time last year, one Anthony Armstrong was signed to a reserve/futures contract. Let's hope the Skins are fortunate to find another diamond in the rough.

Posted by: TWISI | January 4, 2011 6:54 PM | Report abuse

oooh. a brownwood post that I can mostly agree with. Elway in Denver has disaster written all over it, Fletcher has been superb (though Lewis has been better) and a while back, I suggested Kelly go find a different trainer or take up yoga ... do something different. The old ways keep getting him injured and he's done nothing as a result.

Ha ha. All the little Dukies got all defensive...because what I said was true.

It's no secret that Duke is viewed as an elitist institution in Raleigh-Durham by the minority locals.

Got rejected? Whateves. Didn't apply and didn't even think to.

Why would anyone want to pay a fortune to attend an elitist private institution like Duke when the "education" offered is waaaayyy not worth the price paid.

Sure there are some smart folks there - like at all schools. By and large its a hideout for preppy rich white kids who never want to leave their preppy white elitist lifestyle and delve into the real world.

And for all the fan-fare that rat-face Kryswekeksnxvzskkuki gets, I'm always amazed at how few of his players pan out in the NBA.

I too say yay for off season blogging. In any bad sports city its better than the regular season.

As for last year being win now vs build for the future... I lean towards the idea that we were building for the future last year. Other than the McNabb move, I think most of the things we saw the team do went towards long term maneuvers.

Posted by: alex35332 | January 4, 2011 7:41 PM | Report abuse

I think I can chime in on this whole Duke thing.

I live in Durham and have for a while. I attend the other Durham school, NCCU. I get minority scholarship there.

Yes, the locals HATE Duke kids.

There are hot chicks that attend the school, but they take the word "stuck-up-b!tch" and single-handedly define it.

They go to our favorite sports bars all dressed alike, fake ID's in hand.

You can go to Devine's on a Thursday night during fall semester and see 40 dudes all wearing khaki pants, a blue button-down and Sperrys(or some variation of a business casual shoe).

The girls where prom dresses out to normal occasions,(like going to a sports bar on a Thursday night).

They are obnoxious on more levels than I can describe.

Their sense of entitlement is almost as sickening as their misconception of how intelligent they truly are.

Did I mention I hate Duke and everything it stands for.

Gotta question:

Which breed of college quarterback is winning this bowl season?

The athlete or the pocket guy?

Last night, Stanford's pocket guy Andrew Luck won.

Florida beat Penn State's pocket guy with a pocket/run guy.

Boise State's passer won.

Michigan's run guy-throw guy Denard Robinson lost.

Cam's legs and arm will face the O-Ducks speed.

Tonite, Ryan Mallett's dynamic arm faces Terelle Pryor's arm and legs and suspension.

But I digress.

Which is the best quarterback: the athlete who can make plays with his legs or the pocket guy with deadly accuracy?

The guy who stands tall and reads coverage or the guy who plays football like he's running around on the playground?

I'd say Cam Mallet-Robinson is the guy you want.

Especially if he has Luck in his pocket.

The Buckeyes will keep it close early.

But if the 'Hawgs get 10-14 points up, look for Mallett to 'go for the throat' with a bomb or two.

Redskins fans who haven't watched much football, and dither about quarterbacks should what both Mallett/Pryor as they represent just how the position has evolved:

The pocket passer now can run and the runner-throw guy can read coverage.

This should be a good game.

However, now I disagree...I'd LOVE to get a 4th rounder for 92 but from a division rival?? Think about it - they would only make that trade if they were confident he was worth it...and let's face it, their front offices have been far better than us and in the one recent intra-divisional trade, Philly got far the better of us in that deal...I couldn't pull the trigger on this, cuz it would probably be Philly and Reid is one crafty fat man. And it were Dallas, I couldn't stand the thought of this fat ba$tard dominating us wearing silver and blue.

Wait a second, Albert Haynesworth showed up on the day his suspension ended to clear out his locker while wearing a shirt that said "PUNK" on the back? Really? That's really the shirt he chose out of his closet on that particular day? The shirt that said "EXORBITANTLY RICH MALCONTENT" was in the wash or something?

"I've got nothing to say," Haynesworth told reporters, though I'm not sure if that was technically the question.

And the future?

"If a guy refuses to talk to you, it's hard to have a conversation with him," Mike Shanahan told CSN Washington Kelli Johnson. "I initiated it before and he refused to talk to me, so that kind of says it all, doesn't it?"

Maybe. The "PUNK" shirt helps, too

Here's what the Skins CANNOT do.

You can't take the 4th or 5th best QB at #10. If the guy they've targeted is off the board then you have to take the 1st or 2nd best player at an impact position such as OLB, DL, WR, CB.

Can't settle at #10 overall.

Ohio State has a nice game plan--they go 'no-huddle' to speed up the pace of the game and call quick hitting running plays just as the Hawgs defense gets set.

Those running plays catch AR off balance and complement the play action passing.

Pryor looks good, too, but should stay in school.

He'll be the top pick in 2012.

Can't settle at #10 overall.

The issue we have is that folks know what Shanny wants, so trading down or up will cost us.

Me?: I trade DM5 to AZ to move up to 5.

Then I draft who I want.

You're not even in the game. Cards can take whoever they want at #5. They don't have to settle for the Redskins' leftovers from Reid's table scraps. And they won't touch McNabb with his contract.

You think you'll get #5? You won't even get a fifth round pick for McNabb.

Posted by: beep-beep | January 4, 2011 9:30 PM | Report abuse

Moe--

Look at the draft value charts. #5 pick is 1700 points. #10 pick is 1300 points. The difference, 400 points, is the 18th pick in the second round. You don't really think the Cardinals would give up the equivalent of a second round pick for McNabb.

Mallett is going to get hurt pretty soon if Arkansas' O-line can't figure out how to block.

Ohio State's de-tackle Heyward (Ironhead's son?) is doing that all by himself.

He's been very impressive.

You gotta give it to Jim Tressel--dude has his team ready and committed to win.

Posted by: MistaMoe | January 4, 2011 10:19 PM | Report abuse

Heyward is pretty dang impressive, for sure.

I still like what I'm seeing with Mallett. If his receivers were making catches like Ohio State, Arkansas would have at least two more TDs.

But the bright side (from an evaluation standpoint) of the pressure Mallett's getting is that we're getting to see how he performs behind a less-than-dominant O-line -- the kind of O-line the Skins have had, and will probably have for at least a little while longer no matter what we do in the draft & FA.

So, was that a safety?

I'm pulling for Arkansas, so I'm happy with it. I guess they're saying that since he broke contact with the original defender before getting tackled, it's a safety.

Gonna be a pretty darn contentious call if Arkansas wins it.

The reports have been updated to "sources say" about hiring Hue Jackson.

Funny situation all around.

Hue goes and interviews in SF to satisfy the Rooney rule. But everyone knows its Harbaugh that SF wants. No one knows if Harbaugh wants SF ... and there are plenty or reasons for Harbaugh to be skeptical.

Actually, there are a lot of reasons that top candidates might shy away from SF, from a poor ownership group to the absence of a QB. In essence, Jackson might be one of the guys who SF might hire if the bigger names hesitate.

Al Davis meanwhile, looks at guys who show interest elsewhere as traitors. He doesn't care much for the 49ers and I doubt he'd want to let Jackson interview just so SF could satisfy the Rooney rule. Davis is not trying to be helpful -- just not in his nature.

Davis doesn't want to let Jackson get away, supposedly he thinks Jackson was the coach most responsible for OAK's improvements.

Now that Cable is out, it appears Davis needs to move quickly to lock up Jackson. Jackson has to be careful because Davis won't stand for a guy who wants to play hardball.

My guess is that OAK winds up with Jackson as HC very soon, while SF eventually turns to a veteran NFL coach, perhaps Billick, to run the show.

As for Harbaugh, I think he looks at the owner, decides which guy he wants to work for and goes there or stays at Stanford. Miami or Denver seem like good choices because of the owners, Carolina because the QB will be Andrew Luck.

But in a stunner -- I'm calling Harbaugh to Cleveland. He'd work for Holmgren, who was also an offensive wizard from the Walsh tree. And he'd get to play his brother twice a year. Harbaugh seems like the sort that would love that.

I know, people will wonder what I'm smoking by predicting Harbaugh to CLE. Not sure what it is, but it must be strong stuff ...

Not sure if this was posted up here already, but the stuff at the end is pretty good:

Redskins notes 1/3/11

By: John Keim

1. Mike Shanahan made it clear what he thought Graham Gano’s 11 misses stemmed from: his head.
“It has got to be mental and not physical,” he said. “It’s the same thing I shared with him after the Tampa Bay game. That mindset has to be very, very strong if you are going to be a kicker in this league.”

But Gano disagreed. Instead, he said his focus this offseason is working on kicking off a two-step approach rather than his current three steps. He used the latter, he said, to get more distance. He said the two-step approach leads to more consistency.

And he’s not worried about the mental aspect.

“I’ve never had a problem mentally,” he said. “I’m very mentally strong. It’s more technique. I can put the ball through from 60 yards, but it’s accuracy. I have to work on my mechanics. It’s fired me up having the season I’ve had. I’m looking forward to getting better.”

Well, if he doesn’t then he’ll be out of a job. Pretty simple.

2. Defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth showed up to get his physical and clean out his locker Monday. But he refused to speak with the media. End of story. End of Redskins career. Will he be traded or released? My hunch, for now, says traded. Talked to one NFL source who thought two or three teams would be interested, including wherever Jeff Fisher coaches. Haynesworth won’t yield much more than a fifth-rounder, but it beats nothing.

3. C Casey Rabach will undergo surgery on his right shoulder, something he said was already scheduled before he hurt it Sunday vs. the Giants.

4. LB Andre Carter understands his tenure here could be over. If the Redskins don’t pick up an option on his contract, he’ll be a free agent. There’s no doubt he’d rather be back in a 4-3 system. This season reaffirms what he always believed: he’s a defensive end.

“I told my position coach if he got me as a rookie, I definitely would shine,” Carter said. “But … I’m always going to be a defensive end.”

This was a tough season for Carter, who was coming off his best season in Washington. He could have complained and never did. Sort of the opposite of some players.
But he knows Monday might have been his last time in this locker room.

“It’s tough,” he said. “There’s so much history here. I’m appreciative of the guys I played with… It’s a lot of memories.”

6. Corner Carlos Rogers reiterated that he would like to stick around in Washington, but that this is his chance to cash in after missing out last offseason. He’s not concerned with the potential glut of free agents, saying he’ll be one of the top corners available. Could be that a difference of opinion in terms of his worth prompts him to sign elsewhere.

But he enters free agency having shown that he can cover in the slot as well as drop to safety on occasion.

“I’m familiar with here, I like the players here,” Rogers said. “I don’t want to move. But money always plays a part in it.”

7. Malcolm Kelly – remember him? – did what Shanahan wanted by staying in town while he was on injured reserve. In most cases, players leave town and they aren’t sticking around for Saturday walk-throughs. Kelly did that.

“That’s hard, man, coming in for meetings every day when you know you won’t be able to play,” he said, “especially when you have the option to be back home hanging out. Once I got fully healthy that was the most frustrating part, going through all the meetings and coming up here Saturday mornings for the walk-through. It was showing him that I want to be here.”

Now he needs to show it on the field.

8. Redskins union rep Vonnie Holliday doesn’t share commissioner Roger Goodell’s optimism regarding a CBA settlement before March.

“It’s highly unlikely at this time,” Holliday said.

What he doesn’t like is that, in his mind, the owners are winning the public relations battle with the players.

“We need to do a better job of getting our message out where we stand on things and that’s something where there’s going to be a big push in the next month,” he said. “We should be saying we’re not a bunch of greedy guys. We have a formula that works. We’re just asking the owners why are we going through labor issues right now when this equation is working. Everyone’s winning.

“It’s amazing how the talk evolved from negotiating a collective bargaining agreement to negotiating an 18-game season. That was a strategic move by ownership and the NFL. That’s disappointing. As players you see the increase of head injuries and the fine system and you talk about player safety and then you want to go to an 18-game season? How can you talk about players’ safety when you want to put players at risk?”

Incidentally, Holliday has one year left on his deal with Washington. He hasn’t made up his mind if he wants to return just yet. I will say, whenever he retires he should be placed immediately in front of a camera. The guy is good.

9. Adam Carriker said his recent improved play resulted from an altered mindset. Though everyone called him a good fit for a 3-4, he still suffered growing pains.

“Once the season got going I got real gap conscious,” he said. “We played some real physical teams and no one was able to move me off the ball. But I needed to make more plays. In my mind it was like I make the play even though I don’t make the tackle. But at the end of the year I was like, forget that I can make the play and make the tackle.”

In other words, instead of just setting up his teammates he wanted some tackles for himself.

When the coach says "you have a mental problem" and you say "no I don't" to the press, then it confirms that you have a mental problem. Graham, you're lucky to have a job. Don't go out and try to show up the man who gave it to you. The right thing to say is "I sure appreciate the coach's advice and I'm going to work on it."

Everyone uses different tiebreakers for different purposes. Think of all the women you ever, well, you know. Now make a list of them from hottest to coldest. Make another list from "most marriable" to "least marriable." Are the two lists the same?

NFL has one list based on best RECORD IN THE CONFERENCE. They use that for scheduling. It has another list, for parity, of STRONGEST TEAM IN THE LEAGUE. The lists are about the same, but should they be identical given that they're trying to measure two slightly different attributes?

Beep, the attempt at humor notwithstanding, I don't see the point...there's no discernible difference between establishing a tiebreaker for playoff entry or for draft order. The general idea is for the weaker team to pick higher and the better team to get to the playoffs. I don't see how Dallas cutting the line ahead of us is in any way fair...

10. Washington Redskins

In my family, i have several uncles and cousins who are officials for both football and basketball. A few of them expressed real frustration with officiating Duke games because they felt like there was unspoken pressure to go easy on the Blue Devils when it came to fouls and other calls. I don't have a dog in this race, but I can see why the Maryland fans would be upset. I remember that Duke-Maryland Final Four back in '01 (i think), and that was possibly the WORST officiating i've ever witnessed in my life.

There are a few officials who don't take any $*@( from Coach K, but there are some who may as well put on a blue jersey during the games (Karl Hess, Jamie Luckie, Bryan Kersey, Tony Greene, Dave Libbey). There are others, but those guys are just unbelievable.

And say what you will about Duke basketball, the university is one of the tops, i think, in the country. And if any of my relatives are ever seriously ill, i'd rather have them treated at Duke University Medical Center than anywhere else in that region, hands down.

And how do we improve this group: a FA center/guard and drafted right tackle

Posted by: MistaMoe | January 5, 2011 7:55 AM

Moe, LOL as usual with your posts.

-I think Rabach stays simply because he is under contract for another year. He might be a backup next year - especially if they move Montgomery into his slot, but he provides experience and depth.

-Really kind of worried about Brown. Even though he has played better of late he is still clearly not 100% and after almost two years of rehab, one wonders if he will ever get back his mojo. He needs a new contract and what he wants might factor into the decision of whether to keep him or not.

-As for Capers, I expected something this season and saw nothing. The fact that he spent the entire season on the practice roster kind of leads one to believe the Redskins didn't think they were risking much by leaving him hanging out there. My feeling is the guy just doesn't have the muscle to play in this league. Maybe he'll be able to pack it on, but right now he is a weaker version of Lichtensteiger (yuk!).

-Cook is interesting. I think he's too tall/has too high a center of gravity for center - especially if you have a 6'1" Rex Grossman at quarterback trying to see over his 6'6" frame. He played multiple positions on the line in college and I wonder how he would look at right tackle...

-Lest we forget, there is also Clint Oldenburg, who spent the year on IR. He's got the mobility to play in this offense but still needs to pack on some muscle. At 27 years old, maybe his ship has sailed...

-Haven't heard much of an update on Mike Williams. I am not even sure if he is cleared to play or what the results from a season off have done to him. Remember, Dockery was his link to the team and now it looks like Dockery might be leaving. If he's cleared and has stayed in shape, he could be a player. I liked him at guard.

-I liked what little we saw of Heyer at guard. I really think the team needs to get Lichtensteiger out. The guy is a tight end playing at guard and I could see the team making an effort to transition Heyer to guard.

If the team picked up no other lineman and elected not to re-sign Brown, I think they come up short at right tackle and center. They could make do at guard but only if Williams is for real. There are a lot of guys I hope can rise up, but as they say in the Army, hope is not a plan.

Let's face it, Capers is at least 2 years away from competing even as a backup. And I'd honestly be happy with that. The best case senerio is for Brown to return to Pro Bowl form at RT and Capers be a solid backup.

Cook should be a little further ahead, he should be pushing people for C/G playing time next year, although being a key backup is where I expect to see him for the 2011 season.

I thought I had accidentally started reading Catch 22 after that first sentence, beeps. I think Gano's problem is upstairs as Shanahan has said, but his problem also is he is a kid. I think a little patience with him will ultimately benefit the Redskins. I'll go back to what I have said before though, and that is Danny Smith doesn't know how to develop kickers/punters. I'd like to see the team hire an assistant that just works with those guys and let Smith focus on the coverage units where he truly does well. I read somewhere that Mark Moseley had offered his services in the past, and with Allen's links to former Redskins I think this would make for an intriguing story line. Granted, Moseley was a straight on kicker, but if Gano's problem is upstairs, who would be a better mentor?

I think they come up short at right tackle and center. They could make do at guard but only if Williams is for real.

We've said it before, and will say it again:

FA center and guard, draft a right tackle.

If the Redskins were able to pick up another stud lineman either a Center or Right tackle I think that solidify the offensive line. The line seemed to play allot better the tail end of the season.

I'm not putting much hope into Mike Williams being viable at the guard spot...given another year that he's not played, and he's not the typical guy that shanny likes on the line...

Trade Hanesworth back to Tenn. plus McNabb for Vince!
Fisher will stay in Tenn. and they need a DE.

This actually sounds doable, as the FO of TN is considering being done with VY. He's Young and could do well in a new environment. Since they wish to just be done with him, maybe get a 4th thrown in or a third in 12' based on performance.

The owner is not done with him and will most likely fire the coach because he wants to keep VY.

Why the hell would you want VY he is not a good QB.

This sounds horrible. VY almost went mental because of the Tennessee fans.

Imagine having Shanahan as a coach and dealing with Skins fans and the Washington media.

He would be in a 72 hour psych lock up/suicide watch his first week here.

No way to Vince Young.

Sure, it does sound doable. Firing Shanahan and re-hiring Spurrier is also doable, but just because it's doable doesn't mean it isn't retarded. Pass on VY.

Posted by: monk811 | January 5, 2011 9:30 AM | Report abuse

Maybe not VY, But I am really opposed to drafting a high pick QB, when our interior O-line is filled with DL matadors and revolving doors. We need another year of veteran QB who makes quicker decisions until the line can actually hold up a pass rush for 3-4 secs. and blow open holes for a RB. Same thing for the interior D-line. You can't release the LBs to stunt, blitz and create carnage if there is no pressure up the middle.

I'd rather get a VD than even one year of VY...we've already overpaid for one of TN's head cases, I'll take a pass on repeating that mistake...

Now, if they wanna deal us Kerry Collins I might be willing to listen to that...provided they take AH back in return...

Are people really still thinking Big Mike Williams is answer to anything???

My wish list for youngish vet instead of rookie is Kyle Orton

My intriguing "middle age QB looking for new start" Carson Palmer

My Matt Schwab back up to starter option is Matt Flynn

my preferred rookie QB that still has huge upside but no move up/sell the farm deal: Locker
