Redskins sign tight end Sean Ryan

Former Kansas City tight end Sean Ryan has signed with the Redskins, the team announced Thursday.

Used primarily as a blocking tight end throughout his six-year career, Ryan last season had personal-best totals with 14 receptions for 135 yards and two touchdowns. He has 26 catches for 240 yards and two touchdowns in his career.

Unrestricted free agent Todd Yoder has filled the blocking role for Redskins the past four seasons. Pro Bowler Chris Cooley and rising third-year player Fred Davis are expected to form one of the league's top pass-catching tandems in the 2010 season.

The Redskins are the sixth team Ryan has played for in as many seasons. In addition to the Chiefs, he previously played for the 49ers, Saints, Dolphins, Jets and Cowboys.

"Brady Quinn is being shopped around. Think the 'skins will attempt to trade for him?"

The 1st observation is this: who playing q-back for the browns next year seeing how they also let D Anderson go?

No Quinn, no Andersen--maybe J Cribbs will be the brown'es quarterback.

And if they're quick to move what they got at the position, it makes you wonder if they'd take a guy like Jason Campbell, or if they are willing to move up to #4 to get Claussen and we move down and pick up a late rounder as well?

The browns/skins trading partners?

Might be nice if both teams did a lil bidness.

wonder if the Sean Ryan signing indicates less than positive progress in Cooley's fracture? (not that Ryan is near Cooley's caliber as a player).

Most unsettling of Cooley's injury was how it happened.. No contact.. just a reverse double move. No opposing player's weight or restriction involved.

Must be a compensatory pick (which can only go as high as a three), because I don't see how Vick's trade value goes up next year unless he gets a lot more playing time than he did this past season.

Why are we quick to forget that Shanahan likes mobile athletic O-Line, using tight end as lineman,Sean Ryan at 6'5 250 fit the mould.

Posted by: abxinc | March 11, 2010 9:20 AM | Report abuse

Cooley has shown that he can get the job done time after time and for Davis he has shown that he can also get the job down if he's the starter. He showed heart and keep in mind when we had that bye week he stayed in for extra help. I think us getting this tight end is for camp help and camp help only. I think shan and the group dont want to run cooleys injure into the ground and make it more worse than what it already is so now with 4 tight ends they all can get some what of a break in between drills

I've grown tired of hearing the media slobber over the Steelers as being a "model" franchise founded on all the great wholesome "principles" of the universe.

The golden-boy face of their franchise appears to be a serial sex assaulter. Sex assault allegations are like deer. For every one that you see there are 2-3 more hiding in the woods nearby that you don't see. For years, they've seemed unable to keep Roethlisberger under control.

I wonder if the media is going to take the Sacred Steelers off of their pedestal and skewer B.Roeth and the Steelers like they deserve...but I seriously doubt it.

@Moe -

I doubt the Browns are in the market for ANOTHER first round QB bust, but hey, it is Cleveland. They need a solid veteran, which could mean they might be willing to meet the first round tender compensation necessary to get JC17 or negotiate lesser compensation (Quinn and a pick swap or Quinn and a second?). Don't get me wrong, I don't like Quinn at all, but if Shanny sees something in the guy, I'll roll with it.

Cleveland picks 7th, and Bradford will be off the board by then. No way do I see Cleveland picking another Notre Dame QB, so it's either trade up for Bradford or trade for a vet. Either way, Cleveland is a prime trade partner.

So they keep SELLERS? WTF. The guy is useless. Cut his sorry azz already. Hell, YODER outplayed his position all 'round in the one game he took MIKE's place, blocking, running and pass catching. Now with four tight ends who goes, YODER or SELLERS? Maybe we're gonna' trade COOLEY and keep brick-hands DAVIS? Oh yeah, that would be a hoot.

Posted by: glawrence007 | March 11, 2010 9:35 AM | Report abuse

Posted by: heyjoe728 | March 11, 2010 9:37 AM | Report abuse

C'mon people.

We carry 3 TE's on the season roster -Cooley and Davis are the no brainers and we need a third guy for blocking. Yoder used to fill this role, now they've gotten a Yoder clone in Ryan who is younger.

Cooley's not being traded unless someone offers us a ridiculous deal.

Cooley has played H-Back before so this makes sense. Putting Cooley in as the FB and FD as the tight end in passing situations seems like a great way to get both guys on the field at the same time. Cooley has much better hands than Sellers so he probably won't drop those surefire TDs and since Sellers started whiffing his blocks I doubt Cooley could do worse.

I forget where Quinn was drafted. But wasn't he one of those guys that got invited to ESPN's "green room" and had to sit there and sweat it out pick after pick b/c he didn't go nearly as high as they thought? And everytime the camera pans out he's sitting there all alone in the green room?

I remember that happening to Aaron Rodgers. Everytime someone got picked they would flash a camera in his face and he had an expression that said "I'm smiling and trying to act calm, but if I wasn't in this frickin green room with cameras on me, I'd put my foot through the dry wall."

I hear you, gl. Sellers has been a beast in blocking, but that fell off in "09. He's been a good STer. But he turns 35 before season starts. I was surprised we let Eddie Williams go, but he did seem to be hurt a lot. Yoder did well in one game, not sure he could play FB (or HB) on regular basis. But it's worth a try. With having 5 TE'S,,,the Skins must be looking for someone the likes of Ron Middleton.
A powerful blocker with hands, who can line up in the backfield or on the line.

Ryan may fit this roll. Additionally the young man, TE Lee Vickers 6'6" 275 might fill this roll, as well.

Either way. Sellers better have his act together, there is going to be serious competition with regards to the TE/ fullback positions, at camp this year.

No....I wouldn't say Davis has brick hands, but he could certainly use a lot of work. What makes it worse for him is that a few of his drops have lead to picks.

As far as Ryan vs. Yoder...Same frame, same role, Ryan is 2 years younger.

One DAvis "brick hands" moment comes to mind...

Giants game, last year, (when the game was still close). Davis dropped a TD pass from JC in the endzone.. perfect pass hit him in his hands.. right before the end of the half..

Next play(s).. "the Swinging Gate" (twice). Ummmm.. so if he did catch the pass, would Zorn would still be here??

We won't have a fullback on the team

It appears, they are moving to a 2 TE system, just like in the old days

The zone blocking scheme works better with two TE because of the flexibility

Sellers & Ryan are your blocking TE and Cooley & Davis are your pass catchers

Shanny, unlike Zorn is using the talent around him

He may still add one more, not sure

The team now has a surplus of TE's.. so, a Trade is plausible.. regardless of who it is or what the Skins get in return.

"They need a solid veteran, which could mean they might be willing to meet the first round tender compensation necessary to get JC17 or negotiate lesser compensation (Quinn and a pick swap or Quinn and a second?)."

It's nice when folks take what you say then say it back to you like you didn't already say it.

But I'll say it again: the brownies and skins would make nice trading partners.

The skins move from 4 to 7, get a tackle/guard as a throw in, and we keep Campbell.

The brownies then slurp up Claussen or Brdaford, and all backs have been scratched.

Things would be even more interesting if the brownies are willing to negotiate the compensation for Campbell: we could wind up with another 2nd or third and a player (lineman type).

Of course, this is all fantasy.

But it might make for an interesting reality as we'd get better option than just 5 picks offer.

This is why I have no problem keeping both him and Cooley. Davis was originally a WR. He converted to TE. Cooley has played HBack and lined up at FB. I think they are different enough to keep both on the roster and to put both on the field at the same time.

Two starters at the same position is a surplus, especially at the TE position and especially if you compare that to all the other position(s) of need we are pretty set at TE and I would say SS. Those 2 positions I would consider "positions of no need".

Question...Name the last great Sooner QB? Bradford is all but a lock to go #1.

Your logic is flawed, you blame the player, not the school for their lack of success in the NFL. Clausen is the most pro ready QB in the draft and although I wouldn't draft him, your thought process will never enter Holgren's mind.

He and Shanahan must be laughing their collective as-ses off, now, reading the current Redskin Fan withdrawal symptoms of "no blockbuster FA signings".

Right. They have nothing better to do, since they aren't signing UFA's, so they are glued to their computers, laughing at RI comments. Right.

The quote was from the Wash Examiner.. So, I cant defend them..
The team now has a surplus of TE's.. so, a Trade is plausible.. regardless of who it is or what the Skins get in return.

They have the same amount of TE's as they had last year, they don't have a surplus.

flounder21, your Midol is wearing off.
how's this??

"The quote was from the Wash Examiner.. So, I cant defend them..

A 4-12 team will not be a FA quick fix and in the playoffs in 2010. BA has essentially said this.
What this means he needs picks... Skins are missing a 3rd and a 6th. And have 5 weeks before the Draft. If they keep JC (no 1st Offer) then they can aim for a franchise QB in 2011. And make a deal (picks and/or players) with a team that wants to move up to the 4th pick.

The first thing Bruce Allen probably thought, when he was offered the GM position for a not-so-young and not-too-deep in talent 4-12 team was;
"Sh-t.. only 5 picks in the best da-mn draft since 1983?"

"Pro Bowler Chris Cooley and rising third-year player Fred Davis are expected to form one of the league's top pass-catching tandems in the 2010 season."

Is that from the team's press release?

After Quinn failed, do you really think they are going to take chance on ANOTHER Notre Dame QB with tons of questions marks? Holmgren is smarter than that (at least I think he is, anyways).

Certainly you have to look at the player, not the school, but ... Bradford would've been the #1 pick last year. His only real question mark is the shoulder. As for Clausen, he has several question marks -- footwork, throwing angle, decision-making, touch on shorter passes, accuracy, etc. My point about the Notre Dame is that the Browns would face a little bit of a PR issue drafting another Notre Dame QB, that's not an indictment on Clausen's ability to play.

He always struck when other teams least expected it.

this signing was a total waste. this guy switches teams every year...unless he is just a special teams player..he won`t play.

They could be looking at him as a blocking H-back/FB type - notice Eddie Williams was released. We also might need special teams help after having released a bunch of guys.

seems pretty obvious cooley wont be here

Posted by: slim4 | March 11, 2010 1:48 PM | Report abuse

Yoder is 34 and probably would have cost the Redskins a lot more than signing Ryan to be the blocking TE. This move has no bearing whatsover on Cooley's status. I can't see the Redskins trading a 27-year old TE who has been very consistent and durable to get a 4th or 5th round draft pick, which is all he would bring in a trade considering he's coming off a broken ankle.

Oh Really?? Who writes this crap!! Fred Davis is so overrated he makes Portis look like Jim Brown. Cooley is a real good one but please enough with the Fred Davis baloney. He sucked against the Eagles, - couldn't block a 80 year old nun. He doesn't run routes that well. Dream on Deadskins fans because unless Elway comes out of retirement the basement will be welcoming your team back this coming season.

Does anyone really thin shanahan will trade chris? I'm sure he's nutted more than once about having a threat like him. Its pretty they signed him to replace the Yoder.

I'm convinced 99% of the posts on here are Glenn Beck of fox.

earth to the cynics...the new tight end is for blocking purposes only..i.e. short yardage situations...he's here to replace yoder...i wouldn't expect cooley or davis to be traded...everybody relax

Posted by: stevemck3 | March 11, 2010 10:12 AM

it is possible they bring back yoder and keep sean ryan to set up a heavy jumbo package for short yardage situations. this is where games are won and lost...3rd and 1 4th and 1...etc..last year our short yardage game was lame...maybe larry johnson will be a power back for these situations..he's got the size at 6'1" 230lbs. i wouldn't trade cooley or davis...davis is younger than cooley and showed great skill and promise last year, but he really has only had one decent year under his belt, so i wouldn't risk trading cooley and have davis not pan out or if he gets injured we'll be left without a receiving tight end....not good..i say keep cooley and davis...draft russell for LT with #4 and we in bizness
