Redskins Take 17-9 Lead into 4th Quarter

The Redskins, who had only 98 yards of total offense in the first half, needed only a yard to take a commanding lead on the Panthers early in the third quarter. After Washington punted on its first possession of the half, Carolina quarterback Jake Delhomme looked for receiver Muhsin Muhammad on third and eight. The ball went off Muhammad's hands, and Washington quarterback DeAngelo Hall picked it off and rumbled 44 yards to the Carolina 1. From there, Clinton Portis leapt over the left side of the line for his second touchdown of the day, and Washington took a 17-2 advantage -- the largest lead in the 21 games of Jim Zorn's tenure with the Redskins.

But on the ensuing kickoff, Carolina's Kenneth Moore found a seam and went all the way to the Washington 40. On a second down from the 40, Delhomme found top receiver Steve Smith over the middle. Smith was hammered by Washington safety LaRon Landry, who smashed Smith into Redskins linebacker London Fletcher. Fletcher left the field in a bit of a daze, replaced by H.B. Blades. (Fletcher would return on the next series.)

On a second-and-five play from the 17, Delhomme found tight end Jeff King in one-on-one coverage with rookie linebacker Brian Orakpo. The touchdown pass cut the Redskins' lead to 17-9 with 8:31 remaining in the quarter.

The Redskins got the ball back on their own 20, and even with their patchwork line, they moved the ball a bit. But after replacement left tackle D'Anthony Batiste was called for lining up in the backfield on a third-down play -- negating a first-down pass to Antwaan Randle El -- Zorn elected to go for it on fourth and three from the Carolina 38. Campbell looked for Santana Moss on a quick slant on the left, but Carolina linebacker Thomas Davis batted the ball down at the line of scrimmage. When the quarter closed, the Panthers had moved into Washington territory, needing a touchdown and a two-point conversion to tie.

On the bright side, BMW looks great at guard, they are running behind him and he's doing well. Guess we'll be talking to Levi Jones, Jonas Jennings, Runyan, and/or Bridges tomorrow now that we know BMW is a guard and Batiste is a scrub....

So when does the Fred Davis experiment officially end?

Typical that the offense can't hold up its end of the bargain and take some time of the clock to help the defense.

Posted by: CDon | October 11, 2009 3:31 PM | Report abuse

They have driven the ball last two possessions and we go three and out and give them the ball right back with a short field. Our offense still sucks....

Posted by: chrislarry | October 11, 2009 3:32 PM | Report abuse

Why is that when JC does have time, no one seems to be open? I'm not sure I understand that. Is that a problem with the WRs or is it because JC is afraid the throw the ball anywhere?

Posted by: CDon | October 11, 2009 3:33 PM | Report abuse

The O-line started out as average at best, but now we have 2 guys on the OL who hadn't suited up for an NFL game in at least 2 years: Batiste since 2007, and BMW since 2005.

Of course the offense is struggling!

There's a good play to start this pivotal drive. Let a RB carry a pile about 11 yards. Then take a silly illegal contact call.

Man, without the two turnovers that allowed for less than five yard drives, this offense peters out again and scores only three points today.

The Redskins find new and creative ways to lose games every week. This is a comical turn of events.

And this isn't a great challenge because the Redskins are going to need all the timeouts they can get after they fall behind here. Wasted TO. Wasted challenge.

That seems like a loophole. You can't hit the fair catcher, but you can throw someone else into him?

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | October 11, 2009 3:44 PM | Report abuse

Why does Car get the ball? He pushed our guy into ARE. We're gonna lose now.

Posted by: rachel216 | October 11, 2009 3:44 PM | Report abuse

As long as their guys don't hit the guy fair catching they can do anything they want, if westbrook gets pushed into him its fair game....and it hit westbrook first...

Keep buyin' those tix and gear fellas. Danny needs the $$$$$ to draft a few more WRs or a QB no one else wants. Who'll be the next coach du juor???

Posted by: bundy44 | October 11, 2009 3:44 PM | Report abuse

Well that's a ridiculous call. The receiver gets a 3 yard cushion - if the defender pushes the skins blocker into his own man, isn't he automatically violating that 3 yard cushion? What a stupid rule

Posted by: -swb | October 11, 2009 3:44 PM | Report abuse

Let's face it. Aren't we at the point where we expect to now experience weird on-the-field rulings that seem to make no sense, but have been in the rulebook for 100 years or something? Have no idea how blocking westbrook into ARE is cool, but doesn't surprise me if it stands.

Posted by: OldManGibbs | October 11, 2009 3:45 PM | Report abuse

mothereffer. how can this crazy crap happen.

Posted by: kman2 | October 11, 2009 3:45 PM | Report abuse

Doesn't matter because the ball didn't hit ARE. It hit another player, and that's why it's a fumble and Carolina's ball, far as I can tell.

Posted by: CDon | October 11, 2009 3:45 PM | Report abuse

And Zorn, nice waste of a timeout.

Posted by: Poopy_McPoop | October 11, 2009 3:46 PM | Report abuse

So if a guy is calling a fair catch you just grab one of his teammates and throw him into the receiver. Anyone think the NFL doesn't like having winless teams. First no holding calls on the long KO and now this.

Posted by: lifelongfan | October 11, 2009 3:46 PM | Report abuse

And Zorn is just perfectly calm. No passion on this team.

Posted by: stevie_in_gp | October 11, 2009 3:46 PM | Report abuse

Call would've been different, I think, had the ball hit ARE. But because it hit Westbrook, it's a fumble. Wasted timeout that they'll need after they wind up being behind after this drive.

Posted by: ga8085 | October 11, 2009 3:46 PM | Report abuse

That's why you see blockers peel off as soon as their punt returner calls for a fair catch.....

Posted by: zjfr2 | October 11, 2009 3:46 PM | Report abuse

You didn't see the pee stain on Zorn's pants?

Yeah that's it. Has nothing to do with the 'Skins sucking and only getting 2 touchdowns because they're defense put them in the position to score.

Yeah, the nfl and their refs "throwing" this game in favor of the Panthers makes much more sense......

Posted by: AWWNats | October 11, 2009 3:49 PM | Report abuse

Problem is we have trouble scoring more than 17 points.

Posted by: kyureosity | October 11, 2009 3:49 PM | Report abuse

Defense has looked shaky in the second half after handing 14 points to the Skins in the first half. So we see an up and down day from the D and a completely DOWN day from the O. JC needs to throw the ball down the field here and take some chances. Portis doesn't hit holes with any explosion, so it's time to take a new approach.

Posted by: CDon | October 11, 2009 3:49 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: ThrowItToMyTeam | October 11, 2009 3:51 PM | Report abuse

It wasn't a penalty on the punt return because the ball hit Westbrook and not ARE. If the defender pushes Westbrook into ARE AND ARE drops the catch, it's different.

Posted by: CDon | October 11, 2009 3:51 PM | Report abuse

What a totally ridculous rule. Hey kick it short and shove a blocker into the punt returner and you can get away with it. Really, how can you think that is fair?

Posted by: JWPinCHI | October 11, 2009 3:48 PM | Report abuse

Fair or not its the rule, no other teams seem to have a problem when their returner calls a fair catch getting out of the way.....and its not like ARE never calls fair catch, I don't get why we just don't go all out punt block every time, ARE calls fair catch every time anyway so its not like we're setting up for returns.

Posted by: zjfr2 | October 11, 2009 3:51 PM | Report abuse

Why is it that I knew when we went up 17-2 I knew it wouldn't take long for this team to cough up the lead. This team completely lacks the killer instinct to be successful in this league.

Posted by: rickyroge | October 11, 2009 3:51 PM | Report abuse

For those watching the game, other than making the challenge, how did Zorn react to the fcked up no-call on interference on the kickofff? I'm listening to the radio, so can't see, but sounds like Zorn should be going ballistic on these horrible refs, no?

Posted by: gringoinmiami | October 11, 2009 3:51 PM | Report abuse

I still don't get it. How did CAR not get penalized for pushing Byron into ARE? Who cares if it touched a Redskin leg? They can't push our player into our punt returner in the first place.

JC is always wasting our TOs, now it will come back to bite us.

Posted by: OldManGibbs | October 11, 2009 3:52 PM | Report abuse

Ohhh, here we go. Creative way to lose No. 2. Use all your timeouts before you get to the two-minute warning in the second half. JC has to check down or run the play. Can't stand there and be so indecisive that you use your last TO. Awful.

Only way the defense steps up here anyway is if it scores a TD because even if the offense gets the ball back, do you really expect them to move the ball into scoring position?

Posted by: MrRedskin21 | October 11, 2009 4:00 PM

You raise a good point, but the Panthers have scored 19 points less than the Skins this year.

The defense should be able to stop them before they win the game.

That's right. It's all on the officials today. That's why the O-line hasn't held up. That's why Steve Smith has been wide open in the middle of this terrible zone. That's why when JC has time no one seems to be open. It's all the refs here this afternoon.

Poorly managed game here today from the Skins late. Use all your TOs. Don't go for it on fourth down when you need to. Don't score a single point in the second half. Defense breaks down completely in the last two quarters. Special teams gives up a big kick return and fumbles a punt. It's more of the same with some new twists every week.

They haven't been that since 1991. Just watch the game and move on. No need to let it ruin your weekend. Life goes on and the Skins still suck. That's the way it will be until Snyder leaves or until he realizes Vinny is a moron.

Well, let's look at the bright side...at least the media (aside from that moron Larry Michael, if you even consider him "media") is fairly putting the blame for this team at Danny and Vinny's feet. So even though we're an embarrassment, and pee wees can cover bootlegs better than D'Angelo Hall, at least we get to see the heat turned up further on Danny and Vinny. I mean, come on, at some point Snyder has to finally get it - he's the problem! You know, hire a GM, remove himself from day-to-day interference, etc? Right? Right?

DHall's big problem there is that he was the contain man, and he didn't play contain. You learn how to do that in high school. If you're at the end of the line, you're the one responsible for any action to the opposite side of the field. DHall continued to slide downfield, though, and didn't contain. It's about discipline, which is something most of these players don't have.

What's incredible to me is just how consistently bad this team is, week in and week out. Even if they won 40-0 next week I would find it hard to believe they had turned the corner.

I cannot imagine that at this point in the season you can really change a team's sense of self. These players and coaches have to be losing any residual faith they may have had in themselves.

Oy, if this was game #13 or 14 I could strugle through.

But this team has 11 game to go and the soft part of the schedule is just about over.

When they play a quality team they are just going to get destroyed.

They're going to need a new QB, O-line, second wide receiver, a new running back - hell, they need an entire new offense and I'm not sure about this defense anymore.

Yep, a complete makeover.

Danny doesn't need to sell the team - he needs to understand he's a fan and businessman, not a football talent evaluator. Think about it - imagine having an owner who will spare no expense to provide his team with what it needs to be successful with someone who actually knows what he's doing on the football side? Would be a 180 degree different experience, and we'd all be able to appreciate Snyder for what he is - you and I, but with billions of dollars. ;)

The Redskins should protest this game to overturn the result. There is no way that call on the punt return fumble should be made. Perhaps now teams should have a strategy of blocking blockers into the punt returner while they are doing a fair catch. That's a bogus strategy that has no place in the game and the NFL should be completely embarassed about it but their silly pride in having a policy of not overturning a game result will get in the way. If the current rule allows this to be a fumble, it will be changed in the offseason because it is completely absurd from a fair competition standpoint.

If the NFL doesn't overturn this call, it's a bad joke. This is one of the worse calls I have ever seen. The fact that they reviewed it and made the same call makes it even worse

I now know what it has felt like to be a Lions fan for the past ten years. This is a horrible team. It really does start at the top, but the whole organization really sucks.

It was a fumble because it hit Westbrook.

And what's the point of protesting. Skins weren't going to win this game anyway. Did you see the defense in the second half? Did you notice the offense score zero points in the second half and probably only would've had three if not for a great defensive effort in the first half.

I think today was a breaking point for my support of Zorn.
his game management is way too poor. and i honestly don't blame him. he would have been a good coordinator. i dont think he dedicates enough time during the week to game-plan for the upcoming team. he's too busy dealing with "new set of eyes" being hired, player quarrels, media fire, and the unbelieveably high set of standards that previous hires/fires have set for him. it's clear that this isn't working. I think west coast scheme isn't suitable for an o-line that cannot pass-block, and a QB that is too scared to try and make plays, especially when he has a 15 point lead.

Posted by: kman2 | October 11, 2009 4:19 PM | Report abuse

we as fans need to rent out every free space of advertising in and around Fed-Ex field and put up "Dear Snyder, Please, for the love of god, fire vinny and get a real GM. Love, The fans."

I attribute this loss to the horrible front office job of "shoring up" the oline.

you completely misunderstood.. No salary cap and a franchise like the Redskins with unlimited funds as the richest franchise in the NFL will ATTRACT THE BEST COACHES. Why would a top tier Head Coach want to coach a team that has limited funds.. Ie. a small market team like KC. Most likely this is why Shanny, Holmgren, Cowher, Gruden, Billick, etc. have not committed to a new team.. They are waiting to see if 2010 is uncapped. And if so, Snyder and Jerry Jones will most likely have their pick of those former Head Coaches.

The offensive line is non-existent. JC was harassed all day long; he was sacked four times. They gave up a safety. Chris Samuels was injured. We had no tackles this game with Samuels and Thomas out. Our O-Line was terrible since the beginning of the season, but there is no hope when an already bad O-Line loses its starters.
