Redskins Take a Lead into 4th Quarter

The Redskins opened the second half with exactly what they needed -- a big play, of any kind. After the Buccaneers took the opening kickoff, quarterback Josh Johnson unwisely threw into double coverage down the right sideline. Cornerback DeAngelo Hall picked it off and returned it 22 yards to the Tampa Bay 41, the Redskins' first forced turnover of the day.

From there, though, Jason Campbell's struggles continued. Though he scrambled for a nine-yard pickup on third and seven, he had all day to throw on an ensuing third-and-four play from the Tampa 23. But after checking down to wide receiver Santana Moss in the flat, Campbell threw well wide, and the drive stalled. The Redskins settled for Shaun Suisham's 42-yard field goal, cutting the deficit to 10-3 while Campbell's passer rating for the day fell to 16.7.

But after a three-and-out from the Tampa Bay offense, Campbell and the offense put together their best drive of the day. Sparked by a 17-yard pass to tight end Chris Cooley, the Redskins got rolling. Zorn went for it on fourth and one from the Bucs' 36, and Campbell rolled right and found Cooley again, this time for 12 yards. From there, Campbell saved the drive again by scrambling for 13 yards on third and 11, getting the ball to the Buccaneers' 12.

Though Moss was called for a false start, pushing the ball back to the 17, Campbell began to put behind his struggles by finding Cooley on a post pattern on the very next play. The 17-yard touchdown pass with 3:38 left in the quarter looked as if it would tie the game, but Tampa Bay veteran Ronde Barber came off the right edge and blocked Suisham's extra point attempt. Thus, the Redskins trailed 10-9.

The saving grace: Tampa Bay's first three offensive possessions of the second half yielded a total of 14 yards and not a single first down, so the Redskins got the ball back quickly. And from his own 41 yard line, Zorn went for it all. Campbell looked for Moss down the right side, where he faced single coverage from cornerback Aqib Talib, who already had two interceptions on the day. But Moss used a double move to beat him, and Campbell hit Moss in stride, a one-play, seven-second, 59-yard touchdown drive that set off the first true FedEx celebration of the season. The extra point, this time, was good, and with 1:22 left in the quarter, the Redskins took a 16-10 lead -- an advantage they took into the final quarter.

So for those 74% of you who wanted to bench Campbell in the second half. How do you feel now?

Posted by: dbunit04 | October 4, 2009 3:18 PM |

Maybe you should watch the whole game before trying to chastise..idiot.

Rooting for Campbell is like drinking Kool Aide with no sugar!

Posted by: rickyroge | October 4, 2009 3:25 PM | Report abuse

Wouldn't it be smarter after a bomb to not go right back to a bomb? Maybe send a guy deep to open up a shorter pass? If you're the DBs aren't you going to be thinking "I'm not going to get burned again"?

no surprise that JC was trying to FORCE the ball to moss....when when when when when will these guys learn...

Posted by: robertg238 | October 4, 2009 3:31 PM | Report abuse

seriously....if a qb is responsible for 3 turnovers, that's more than enough to be benched. It worked that way back in the day for Sonny J and Billy K, or Doug W and Jay S (cough). Campbell is at best an average qb. He needs to sit, even if it's just for a game. It would send a message from the coach. But our coach, for some reason, isn't seeing what a lot of us fans are seeing.

Posted by: jj44skins | October 4, 2009 3:33 PM

Bringing in anyone at this point in the season won't make much sense unless the missing ingredient is pep talks. It just takes a while to install a new system and a new culture and a new system and culture isn't going to fix the underlying personnel problems on this team.

They have kept the Skins in the game. Offense has turned the ball over 4x and TB only has 13 points. What more are they supposed to do?

Posted by: jiacinto | October 4, 2009 3:38 PM | Report abuse

I'm surprised they kicked the FG. That was a fairly conservative play call.

yes, only 13 so far and yet the bucs missed two fg's. the bucs controlled the ball all first half and pulled a skins in settling for fg's but lucky for us, missed two. This is against the Buc's mind you.

Posted by: BeantownGreg1 | October 4, 2009 3:49 PM | Report abuse

Now that you've finished watching the Skins got away with another lousy win, you have to seriously watch Real Madrid with a $175 million going to two men (Ronaldo and Kaka) take on Sevilla.
If you don't know soccer or futbol, this is the game to watch. Not that MLS crap!

Ahhh, who am I kidding. Forget it.

Questions on the negative side...:

Can Kelly EVER get open?

Who taught Fred davis how to block?

Who taught Haynesworth to "play the piano?"

Why wasn't Tryon sent again after his sack?

Why is no attempt made--on O or D-- to put pressure on the other team, to cause them to think or hurry up, or misdirect?

Posted by: TheCork | October 4, 2009 3:56 PM | Report abuse

just looked at the schedule...this was the last of new qb/rookie coach combo of the year. enjoy it while you can. i predicted 3-13...i have no clue where the 3rd win is going to come from.

Posted by: dealer1 | October 4, 2009 3:57 PM | Report abuse

Not a pretty win but still a win. At least there is hope. Defense played better but offesne is still mostly disfunctional, they make a few plays but no consistency. It was good to see some of the new players contribute, Tyron had a sack and Jarman forced the fumble

Posted by: lifelongfan | October 4, 2009 3:58 PM | Report abuse

I'd like to know if Kelly, Thomas and Davis are not getting open or is it Campbell missing them?

Yeah these wins have been really unsatisfying... last year when we won 4 in a row beating the Cowboys, Eagles... THAT was really satisfying. But I'm happy we won anyway.

Chicago has scored 41 on the Lions... and we couldn't score more than 20 on them... geez..

The best Skin player was Tampa Bay's field goal kicker along with the wind. He makes those two FG and this team is 1-3. JC makes one good throw and you are ready saying he led this team to a win? Give us a break.

Posted by: hock1 | October 4, 2009 3:59 PM | Report abuse

2-2 better than 1-3. We will take it.

Even though JC didnt have a terrible 1st half, But had a great 2nd half and those of you that argued last week he cant EVER lead a team from behind. 10-0 in 1st half. Skins win 16-13 off of JC passing touchdowns.

But of course that was last weeks negativity, we are waiting for this weeks negativity.

gcoles32- He also gave back all the momentum we had with that terrible throw. We're lucky the D got a stop or Tampa would've probably won 17-16.

Now, can you bench your qb after he has a lousy game but still leads the team to a win?

Are you serious?
The best Skin player was Tampa Bay's field goal kicker along with the wind. He makes those two FG and this team is 1-3. JC makes one good throw and you are ready saying he led this team to a win? Give us a break.

Yes, I'm serious. That's why I posted it. You misunderstand me if you think I'm saying he deserves to play. But when was the last time you heard about a qb being benched after a win?

Furthermore, whether you like it or not, he did lead the team to a win by virtue of two TD passes. A pretty win? No. An awful performance? Yes. But unless you can find someone else on the Skins who led this team to a win, it was JC, as bizarre as that sounds.
