Redskins Trail by 3 after 1
The Redskins opened the season on defense, and last year's fourth-ranked unit bent but didn't break in its first regular-season action.
Eli Manning drove the Giants all the way to the Redskins' 11-yard line, with the biggest plays a 25-yard completion to Mario Manningham on third-and-77 and an 11-yard pass to Kevin Boss on the Redskins 31-yard line.
But facing second and 2 and then third and 1 from the 12- and 11-yard line, the Redskins buckled down and forced New York to settle for a 28-yard field goal.
Offensively, the Redskins started with a big play - a 34-yard run from running back Clinton Portis - but immediately followed that with an 11-yard loss on a reverse wide receiver option with Antwaan Randle El. That play all but snuffed out any momentum from Portis' run, and the Redskins punted.
The Giants again drove within Redskins territory on their next drive, with big runs from Ahmad Bradshaw (22 yards) and Brandon Jacobs (15 yards) back to back, bolstered by a late hit penalty on Landry.
But the Redskins defense buckled down and the quarter ended with Jacobs getting stuffed on third and 1 from the 3-yard line.
Players of note from the first quarter had to be middle linebacker London Fletcher, who made several big tackles, and Portis, who turned in the big run.

Zorn's playcalling is atrocious. He's showing absolutely no confidence in his Oline or QB. He's giving the Giants D line way too much respect. THROW the ball idiot!! And after a big run by Portis, set it up for play action and let Campbell wing it.

Posted by: dealer1 | September 13, 2009 4:58 PM | Report abuse
Big story so far: three straight CP runs on that "drive" starting at our one.
The upshot: JZ shows, in the first game of the season, total lack of trust and respect for JC.
This does not bode well.

This is why you can't have corners 10 yards off the ball all the time, especially ones who apparently can't tackle.
Not sure what the play calling was all about on the Skins second drive. Three runs? Give me a break. Trust your QB.
The pressure Haynesworth creates won't mean a thing if the Skins don't have an end who can actually take advantage of a one-on-one match up and get to the opposing QB.
Sad display thus far.

10-0 NY
scrw the fire..get open for a friggn pass..
Looks like the same D-Coord formula that took the Skins to 2-6 the last 8 games of last year... Double Moss, stack Portis and block down cooley at the line.
Zorn had the whole offseason to solve this..
If Skins are down 17-0 by half.. Zorn should shake it up by putting in Collins who went 20 yards per completion against the Giants secondary a year and half ago in the last Skins victory against the Gints.

We are 6-10 to 9-7 every freaking year; we truly need to hit rock bottom and start from scratch-new ownership, new attitude, and new a bunch of no-names like the Hogs who can truly bring us back to glory.

It's embarrassing because too much of what is happening is poor effort/bad judgment.
For example, DeAngelo Hall's Deion-like attempt at the tackle on Manningham should elicit a verbal beat-down from either his position coach and/or his fellow defensive players.

Posted by: mohammed10 | September 13, 2009 5:22 PM | Report abuse
Not that he held the ball too long - more that he held it away from his body. Oh and BTW, the announcers even said it - it wasn't that JC overthrew on the deep ball, it was that he expected Moss to run a different route.

QBing 101: Step up into the pocket. Don't hang back and hold the ball loosely. The sad thing is, there are plenty of places to throw the ball today, but the Skins can't take advantage of it because they're playing scared.

Sorry but the skins flat out suck, they will never be elite until the owner is gone. Yeah he puts money into players, but where has that gotten the team? laughing stock of the division. A true GM with control over personel and experience would be needed before we ever get past the 1st round of the payoffs. This year will be a disapointment as always.

JC's confidence is going to be really shot after this one. Could be career-ending - at least with this team.
He is simply not a good fit with the West Coast offense or any variation of it.
Zorn made a rookie coach mistake by trying to force players into his system instead of devising a system around his players.
Could get real ugly...

JesusFreakKaren I am a big defender of JC. He held the ball way to long.
Posted by: jm220 | September 13, 2009 5:25 PM | Report abuse
Another example of why JC will never be an above average QB. Really good-great QB's would never wind up and expose the ball like he just did on the fumble.
Posted by: Seasontickets1966 | September 13, 2009 5:25 PM | Report abuse
To me...this is where I judge Zorn and JC. You played the worst half you could possibly play but you still have a whole half left.
What are prepared to do?
Posted by: rickyroge | September 13, 2009 5:25 PM | Report abuse
Zorn should be fired right now...forget end of season.
Release campbell. Thank god Redskins didn't sign him to a long term contract. He will be out of the league next year. No team will pick him up.
1/2 of the first game and you can already tell Redskins will finish last in NFC east. Zorn's offense makes Gibbs/Saunders offense looks explosive.
if you don't have a competent QB or a offensive coordinator, that offense is not going anywhere. Now we all know why Zorn was never a coordinator.

The play calling is better on this drive. They're taking advantage of the space in the middle of the field. Cut out the nonsense and exploit what's working. This is how you call a football game. But it has to continue deep in the red zone.

I'd be happy if the O stopped giving up TD's and scored one for a change. . .

Gadget plays will only last so long...Our 100m man looked pretty ordinary and with our defense on the field 95% of the time, he will not last long.

Well, we're only down one point worse than last year. It ain't over yet.

Can somemone please explain to me why you can automatically assume that when a QB does well with another team, that he'd be amazing here too - even though there are different player, coaches, etc. You have NO IDEA what Ryan, Flacco, Sanchez, etc. would do here and seriously, Sanchez had played one game.

If we stop giving enormous cushions on every play, we might show something on defense, being in better position for INTs and tackles. Then we need to better our playcalling - allow our wonderful JC to show us his stuff both good and bad. The vanilla offense will not get it done. At least with JC we have an opportunity for 1st downs.

pss me off.. JC had all off season to learn how to not wind up telegraph his throw..and to improve the speed of his release..
Guess you cant fix slow..

The main issue is the coaching staff was not hand picked by the head coach umm unlike every other team in the NFL, and why has this not been noticed identified managment LOL. Why is it every year we put mucho money into a hand full of players but lack the positions we need depth in? Randle El like 5.9" is average at best and his salery is 4m or so? Please get more talent of the O-line and stop paying avergage players above average pay.

What happens when we get a 0-line injury, we get Mike Williams who should be on the show" The Biggest Loser" not a football team lol
Posted by: rb_rivers | September 13, 2009 6:36 PM | Report abuse
I think Campbell is decent but without a good 0-line like the Giants, he is below average. My glass is half empty thus far considering the scoring other teams in our division have done today. Look at the no-name guys on the Giants making plays, Skins look like chumps. Mr.Jerkface Synder how about buying a new owner cuz you suck and tainted the skins tradition from day 1.

Not looking good... on the bright side - no major injuries so we get to see these same disappointing folks again next week!
Hey - we lost to the Giants in the opener last year too and started 6-2. So there is some hope.
Have a great week everyone
