Redskins Trail by TD after a Quarter

Had the Redskins envisioned disastrous ways to start a game against a winless team, Sunday's start would have been a candidate for the worst. Quarterback Jason Campbell was sacked on the team's second play from scrimmage, then sacked again on the third-down play by Tampa Bay end Jimmy Wilkerson. Worse, Campbell fumbled, and Tampa Bay's Gaines Adams recovered at the Redskins' 10-yard line.

From there, Buccaneers rookie quarterback Josh Johnson needed only two plays -- the second an 8-yard pass to receiver Antonio Bryant -- to give Tampa Bay a 7-0 lead. All of this, in the game's first two minutes, and when the Redskins went three-and-out on their next possession, the boos started raining down at FedEx Field.

Then, the really bad news. Somehow, punter Hunter Smith -- perhaps the most consistent Redskin in the first three games -- strained a groin muscle on his first punt. So when the Redskins failed to move the ball much after taking over at their own 5, place kicker Shaun Suisham had to punt -- from his own end zone. His first NFL punt traveled only 31 yards, and the Buccaneers took over at the Washington 40.

Tampa Bay, though, could do nothing with the excellent field position. After moving the ball to the Washington 26, the Bucs were hurt by a delay of game penalty on third down, and then kicker Mike Nugent knocked his 49-yard field goal attempt off the right upright.

The Redskins then used their best play of the first quarter -- a 17-yard pass from Campbell to tight end Chris Cooley -- to move into Tampa Bay territory. But on third down, Campbell missed Antwaan Randle El. Zorn, facing fourth and four from the 37, decided to go for it. Campbell, though, threw into double coverage when he looked for receiver Malcolm Kelly, and Tampa Bay's Aqib Talib picked off the pass. A miserable quarter ended with the Redskins down by a touchdown, without their punter, and facing another Tampa Bay drive.

Posted by: mac2j | October 4, 2009 1:58 PM | Report abuse

If it wasn't for Nugent this would be more embarassing (if that is possible). There are no more excuses BAD TALENT + BAD COACHING + BAD EXECUTION means a losing team. It is too late to fix the talent but coaching and execution is possible. I have been a Zorn supporter and have thought a change would not work but at this point could it be any worse. The team is actually regressing.

Posted by: Alan4 | October 4, 2009 2:12 PM | Report abuse

I will defend the line. JC has had time, either the receivers are not open or he refuses to throw. The last sack was not the line. The can not be expected to hold back the rush for 5 minutes.

Posted by: lifelongfan | October 4, 2009 2:12 PM | Report abuse

Funny how people are quoting JCs game stats today. "Stats are meaningless" was the mantra against him before today.

Posted by: Alan4

You don't understand anything. JC lovers used stats to defend him during the last two games. He had great stats but they were from the opposition playing prevent defense. So therefore they were mostly meaningless.

TODAY's stats DO NOT lie. He has 2 ints and both were his fault.

Go ahead, keep defending him. But like someone said, NO ONE can say he isn't our biggest problem today.

Posted by: TWISI | October 4, 2009 2:15 PM | Report abuse

Rachel 216,

I can say JC is not the BIGGEST problem today. He is a problem all right, but not the BIGGEST. The biggest is the lack of an OL which everyone and their grandmothers know about the Skins. This is an issue that has been going on for years which the owner and management have failed to address.

So if you ask me, the BIGGEST of the BIGGEST problem with the Skins is none other than the OWNER.

Posted by: JeanJak | October 4, 2009 2:16 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: rachel216 | October 4, 2009 2:16 PM | Report abuse

rachel216, I said JC is having his worst game. I hope they replace him, just so the people here that hate him can find a new target to blame.

The defense sucks. They're playing against another rookie QB. The O-line sucks. This team has much bigger problems than QB, and JC is the 10th QB for our team this decade. The problem is bigger than JC.

No, JC IS the biggest problem. When JC has time to throw he doesn't throw it and then it makes the o line look even worse. He has to understand he's not going to have 5 minutes to throw.

Another rookie QB with a worse OL showing our five one-year experienced QB how to play. LOL.

Yeah that's real funny. We're losing and you're gloating.

Posted by: TWISI | October 4, 2009 1:47 PM | R

Posted by: TWISI | October 4, 2009 1:49 PM

TWISI, I am not gloating, I think JC is the best QB on the league. I don't think the interceptions are his fault, the blame lies on Zorn for making those call - that is the throw-an-interception call - and not giving JC a choice.
Hey, don't despair there is still another half for JC to improve his stats with garbage yardage. And remember, we are playing the best team in the league with their number one defense...

Is it possible that we are the worst team in the NFL?

Posted by: jmy999 | October 4, 2009 2:20 PM | Report abuse

99 yards total offense.

Posted by: fan-o-matic | October 4, 2009 2:21 PM | Report abuse

maybe danny vinny & zorn knew exactly what team they had when they pursued cutler and sanchez

Posted by: mohawk44 | October 4, 2009 2:21 PM | Report abuse

im sure in the second half, it'll be "bombs over baghdad" and the skins will put up about 30 points ... LOL. Skins outscored 23-0 in the first half in consecutive weeks by the Lions and the Bucs -- this is not simply bad coaching and bad QB play. This is a team that flat out SUCKS. The skins roster is loaded with old slow players and needs to be gutted.

I've been a Jason Campbell supporter, but enough is enough. They should start Collins in the second half.

Posted by: bendan2000 | October 4, 2009 2:21 PM | Report abuse

rogers SUCKS....bench campbell, bench landry, bench rogers

Posted by: BeantownGreg1 | October 4, 2009 2:21 PM | Report abuse

THE ONLY GOOD THING TO HAPPEN TO THE SKINS AND JC IN THE 1ST HALF IS THAT PASS HITTING THE REF BECAUSE I GUARANTEE YOU IF YOU LOOK AT THE REPLAY THAT WAS GOING TO BE INTERCEPTED AND A SURE 6PTS FOR TP.
JC should have had 3 INTs by now.

Which team in the NFL is worse than the Redskins and why?

Posted by: BrooklynSkins | October 4, 2009 2:22 PM | Report abuse

Why is everyone booing??? Guys, this team NEEDS to go 1-15. Another 8-8 season does nothing for us!

I think we should start cheering every time the skins make a bad play or whenever the other other team makes a good play!

If Zorn does not make a QB change at half then he should indeed be fired. It is so obvious that JC is in trouble. He needs to be sat down just like Gibbs did with all his QBs at one time or another. He needs to regroup. Let Collins get a shot...see what happens.

I've been a Redskins fan since 1978 and I have NEVER, EVER, watched people defend ANY Redskins QB after this many games and this kind of result.

It's ABSOLUTELY mind-boggling.

Posted by: MrRedskin21 | October 4, 2009 2:23 PM | Report abuse

So much for Rogers being an elite CB.

Dude has been baked in coverage a couple of times this year and he still drops gift wrapped INTs.

I hope they let him WALK at the end of the season.

What is bad is that he's still the best CB on the team.

Posted by: RedDMV | October 4, 2009 2:23 PM | Report abuse

Campbell has not been the problem in the other games but he is definitely the problem today. He appears to not have a clue. He is inaccurate and indesive. He has had time most of the game so I don't understand the problem today.

I tell you guys, you want to be heard as fans? Protest the team name which is looking awfully offensive right now when we lose. The owner will have no choice but to listen to us fans then.

I am not a big Hockey fan but the best owner of any sports franchise in the area is none other than Ted Leonsis. Perhaps he will be interested in buying the soon to be renamed Skins, and take us from a loser to a winner for once.

30 minutes till Real Madrid vs Sevilla in La liga. Real FUTBOL baby!!!

Posted by: JeanJak | October 4, 2009 2:26 PM | Report abuse

i hope they are 1-15 this year to show snyder his plan doesnt work
if he comes around (doubtful) he hires a competent gm that runs the show and they start off w/ good draft picks

Posted by: jj44skins | October 4, 2009 2:19 PM | Report abus
I'll never hope we lose,BUT if we do it would also be great if snyders competion down the road won it all just as a steady reminder of how a real franchise should be run. you'd think he would realize he is a laughing stock

Posted by: hcic55 | October 4, 2009 2:26 PM | Report abuse

For those who still defend Campbell or this team just are being ignorant and stubborn.

They just don't want to admit that they're wrong.

They are just as pathetic as the product on the damn field. No wonder these delusional fans gravitate to them so much.

Posted by: RedDMV | October 4, 2009 2:27 PM | Report abuse

I have been willing to give Campbell a chance, but I'm done bench him along with Portis and Landry.

Posted by: mohawk44 | October 4, 2009 2:28 PM | Report abuse

Come on. Don't give up on JC is not like he is playing against the worse team on the league, is he? The Skins just claimed that throne.

Posted by: hock1 | October 4, 2009 2:29 PM | Report abuse

I don't understand not playing Marko Mitchell when JC isn't connecting with any WR other than Moss.

I really don't understand not even having him active.

Posted by: mac2j | October 4, 2009 2:58 PM | Report abuse

campbell is not the problem and if I was him I would have demanded to be traded when management was pursuing other qb's. synder needs to spend 10m for 10 offensive lineman instead of 100m for one tackle that's not on the field for more than a quarter the entire game and really don't have that much of an impact on the game. 10 years under synder and this what you get, a back who's to small to run up the middle, two small tight ends who's not even taller than pam oliver and a coach with a bad hair day everyday - go lions
