Redskins trail by two TDs at halftime

The problems that have plagued the Redskins all season continued in the second quarter, with a muffed punt (this one by DeAngelo Hall), another offensive line injury and awful coverage by safety LaRon Landry contributing to yet another halftime deficit, with the Dallas Cowboys going into the half holding a 14-0 lead.

The quarter opened with a punt that pinned Dallas at its own 15-yard line, but the field position was quickly nullified when Felix Jones broke off a 15-yard run on first down. The Cowboys were unable to keep the drive moving, however, and eventually punted.

DeAngelo Hall was back to receive the kick and muffed the punt, continuing the Redskins' problems in the return game. Washington opened the drive with a big gain on a 29-yard reception by Santana Moss, who reversed a bubble screen across the field, but stalled after that.

Starting right guard Mike Williams left the game with a toe injury during the drive and was replaced by back up Will Montgomery, who started several games earlier this season for Washington but was eventually bumped out of the lineup in favor of Chad Rinehart, who was eventually replaced by Williams.

Dallas took over on its own 12-yard line but after a 10-yard pass to Miles Austin moved the ball to the 28-yard line, Romo found Jason Witten on a crossing route and Witten sprinted down to the Redskins three-yard line. On the play, Witten did a quick swim move past safety LaRon Landry at the line of scrimmage and outran Landry for the big gain, yet another example of the safety's struggles in coverage this season.
One play later, Marion Barber took it in from three yards out to expand the Cowboys' lead to 14-0 with eight minutes remaining in the half.

The Redskins went three and out on their next drive, but with the Cowboys driving Chris Wilson did well to sniff out a reverse to Miles Austin for a 13-yard loss and on the next play Carlos Rogers tipped a pass and Reed Doughty intercepted the pass and returned it 13 yards. Doughty injured his ankle on the play and left the game -- eventually getting carted off with three minutes left.

On the next play the Redskins failed to capitalize on the momentum, however, as Jason Campbell was sacked and appeared to have fumbled.

The call was reversed and Washington kept possession, but the energy was gone and Washington could not move the ball and punted for the fifth time in the half.

The Cowboys mounted a drive in the final few minutes, moving the ball into Redskins territory with some mid-range passes to Witten and Austin. But they ran out of time at the Redskins' 35-yard line when Romo hit Austin for a 14-yard gain in the middle of the field with no timeouts and the clock expired with no chance at a field goal.

Signing Marcus McNeil from the cheap-ass Chargers to play LT for the next 10 years is a good start. Then we'll see how well Mr. Allen can acquire draft picks. Patience, everyone. The off-season is close....OUR TIME IS NEAR!

I don't see the Chargers letting Mcneil go anytime soon. Rivers is their franchise, so they're not going to do anything to put him in jeopardy by letting Mcneil go no matter how cheap they are.

Posted by: rickyroge | December 27, 2009 10:07 PM | Report abuse

it's unbelieveable how opposing QBs have forever in the pocket and our corners play 10 yards off the ball, giving up first downs regularly.
and when we're on offense, Campbell has MAX 2 seconds to set and throw, and he's making throws before our wideouts even make their breaks on their routes.

those 2 situations alone tell us how bad our coaches are at gameplanning.

This team was not going to win anything this year, so if you were going to let VC go, the timing was good. Get in a new GM to let him evaluate the players for the remainder of the year.

It's not like VC was calling plays, game planning or motivating the players. The quitting is on the coaches IMO>

Posted by: Skins930 | December 27, 2009 10:32 PM | Report abuse

Skins930--A lot of the problems with the team stem from the lack of having a culture of accountability. I blame Snyder, Cerrato, and (to a lesser extent) Zorn.

What you have here is a bunch of grown men who act like spoiled immature children. That's because management has allowed them disrespect the coaches and senior management. One clear symptom is, if Haynesworth's comments are correct, allowing players to come to practice two hours late without any negative consequences.

Once he has a new coaching staff in place the first task for Bruce Allen is to work with the new staff to determine what players aren't interested in working hard--and who are there just for a paycheck. They need to be merciless in weeding out the "me-first" players and those who just want to be paid. They need to get rid of the toxic players.

That matters before they even consider what positions to fill because you could have the best roster in the NFL and still play horribly if the players have toxic attitudes.

But the bottom line is that this group of players doesn't "give its all" because management has yet to impose accountability for the lack of effort. I don't see how any coach or team could be effective with such a management strategy. I don't think that a coach like Bill Bellicheck, Josh McDaniel, Andy Reid, Mike Tomlin, Ken Wiesenhut, Mike Singletary, Marvin Lewis, Sean Payton, Tom Coughlin, or any of the other teams would allow behavior like that. However, those coaches don't have upper management that just seems to undermine their authority at every opportunity.

next year,
norv is 7-6 after losing to Giants in a hard fought game. Snyder fires him. weekend 13. team is completey destablized. Giants, remember, are the NFC champs, make the Super Bowl. Snyder hires Marty, the next year, he gets them back to rebuiding. they start 0-5, but finish 8-8. looking good for a turnaround. he fires Marty. they have never recovered from that sequence of events as an organization. stupid move after stupid move. impatient Napoleonic nonsense.

vicc,

if you think Snyder isn't a problem, you must have just landed on earth a few hours ago.

SNYDER signed Bruce Smith, Deion, Mark Carrier, Archuleta, and B-Lloyd among others.
SNYDER fired Marty after an 8-8 season that began with 5-5. SNYDER fired NORV when the skins HAD A WINNING RECORD.
SNYDER USED CERRATO AS HIS PERSONAL PUPPET so he (SNYDER) could do whatever he wanted hoping that everyone would blame CERRATO.

If you think Snyder is NOT a problem,
A) you are paid by Snyder
B) YOU ARE SNYDER
C) you are nuts.

Posted by: kman2 | December 27, 2009 11:02 PM | Report abuse

Snyder is the problem..
He knee jerks the firings of HCs when their success supercedes his EGO..
Norv begot Robiskski
Marty Shottenheimer begot Spurrier..
Gibbs begot Zorn

Gibbs was pushed... by vinny/Snyder..

All of these HC firings/retirings were when the team was playoff caliber or being turned around. And the HC brought in, had no experience at all so Snyder could take FULL credit for any success..

Who decides the players?

Posted by: mattsoundworld | December 27, 2009 11:14 PM | Report abuse

players play the game, Vicc, but the NFL is about successful organizations and smart owners. want to know why the steelers are good every year. because they have good ownership and a great organization. patriots. colts. eagles. check the ownership and the organization, you can see why they keep winning. the owner gets it. our owner does not get it. green bay packers have always had a great owner - the city. they get it. players play but they have to know they answer to the coach not the owner. and the coach should answer to the GM not the owner. here, if you don't like the coach, just call the owner. look at Al Haynesworth, the guy who visits with the owner all the time, he says. of course, the coaches have no authority over him. it is about organization. a guy named Jack Kent Cooke understood that for years which is why they won some games under him. Snyder does not get it.

Gibbs and Diesel44 are morons.

Posted by: hock1 | December 27, 2009 11:15 PM | Report abuse

Once upon a time, the Redskins had an owner who, by most accounts, was no saint but knew how to be a good owner and respected the traditions of his team and its league.

Along came Snyder. What was one of the first things he did? He sold the naming rights for the stadium Jack Kent Cooke paid for with his own money (something almost no owner would do today). That is, I maintain to this day, the worst thing Snyder has done since becoming the owner.

I'm not a religious man, but I can't help but think Snyder is cursed for the way he trashed Cooke's legacy just for some extra cash.

Might as well fire all the coaches tonight and cancel the trip to SD next week and start the offseason tomorrow.

What a pathetic display by the Skins tonight and this year. F the 2009 Skins, Coaches and FO.

And F dallas. Will be rooting for those stupid iggles next week, so another reason to say F dallas!

That really doesn't make sense, but I know what you mean.

Snyder brings in players that can play, but the most important position in football is the QB position. We haven't found one yet! The Pats, Eagles, Colts, Chargers: they constantly let veterans leave or change over their roster, b/c their QB position has been set for a long time.

You guys are not paying attention. So lemme offer this perspective: Please name a consistent Superbowl contender, no, consistent Playoff contender whose QB position is constantly in flux?

Still waiting?

So here's a question: What kind of QB should we draft? Oh, we need a slinger to shake things up (Jeff George). Well, actually, we just need a game manager (Tony Banks). Well, we really need to play some pitch and catch (Ramsey, Wuerfell, et al). But then again, maybe we need a veteran who is a leader and protects the ball (Brunell). But yeah, it'd be nice to get a young QB to groom in the image of Brunell (Campbell). But now we need Al Saunders to be successful. Oh, wait, now we need the West Coast to be successful.

So how do we define the QB we want if we can't define what we want that QB to do? That's Snyders bag.
