Giants defeat Redskins 17-14 in hard-fought finale

By Paul Tenorio

Updated: 7:22 p.m.
Fourth Quarter

The Washington Redskins first season under Coach Mike Shanahan came to an end on Sunday afternoon with a 17-14 loss to the New York Giants at home, completing a 6-10 season.

It was Washington's sixth loss at home in 2010. Despite the win, the Giants were eliminated from the playoffs late in the fourth quarter when the Green Bay Packers beat the Chicago Bears 10-3.

Grossman was 26 of 44 for 336 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

Despite the loss, the Redskins did not finish the season without a fight, pulling back into the game with a Grossman touchdown pass to Anthony Armstrong late in the fourth quarter, and a drive that gave them a chance to take the lead with less than two minutes to go.

Grossman began the quarter with his second fumble of the day, a strip by Osi Umenyiora, but after the teams traded possessions twice, Grossman delivered the longest pass of his career - a 64-yard strike to Armstrong that pulled Washington to within 17-14.

The Redskins defense forced a punt and gave the offense another chance with just more than two minutes remaining, but after picking up one first down, the Redskins couldn't move the ball and Grossman's pass sailed over Terrence Austin's head to end the comeback hopes and the season.

Third Quarter:

Desperately trying to secure a playoff spot, Giants' quarterback Eli Manning hit Mario Manningham for a 92-yard touchdown over Pro Bowl cornerback DeAngelo Hall, giving New York some breathing room with a 17-7 lead.

The Redskins punted on their opening drive and had pinned New York at their own five, but Manning floated a pass over the outstretched hand of a badly beaten CB DeAngelo Hall to Manningham, who raced down the sideline for a score.

The Giants would not muster much more offense through the rest of the quarter, going three and out on one drive and failing to capitalize on a turnover on another, but they went into the final quarter with the 10-point lead.

Washington's offense struggled under Grossman's direction.

Grossman threw an interception to Giants' LB Keith Bulluck on the Redskins 33-yard line with 7:23 remaining in the quarter, but the Redskins defense held and forced a 39-yard field goal attempt that Lawrence Tynes pushed wide right.

Grossman completed just three of his first eight attempts of the half. The quarter ended as the Redskins were driving into Giants territory.

Second quarter:

The Giants took a 10-0 lead on an impressive drive, but the Redskins matched it with a drive of their own to make the score 10-7 at halftime.

Redskins QB Rex Grossman was 10 of 15 for 120 yards and one touchdown in the half, while RB Ryan Torain went into the break with 48 yards on 10 carries. Giants quarterback Eli Manning was 12 of 18 for 127 yards and one interception.

Phillip Buchanon's interception of Manning late in the first quarter gave Washington great field position, but the Redskins couldn't capitalize as Giants lineman Osi Umenyiora beat Chris Cooley off the edge and sacked Grossman, forcing a fumble that Jason Pierre-Paul recovered.

The Giants offense finally found some life after taking possession with eight minutes remaining in the half. Manning connected with D.J. Ware for 16 yards to open the drive and then had two key third-down conversions - 12- and 15-yard passes to Derek Hagan. Kevin Boss hauled in a pretty one-handed catch for 24 yards to set up first and goal on the two-yard line and Brandon Jacobs took it in on the next play to give New York a 10-0 lead.

Washington took over with just 2 minutes 59 seconds remaining and Grossman led the offense on an efficient 80-yard scoring drive.

Grossman connected with Chris Cooley for 16 yards and Fred Davis for 19 yards on consecutive plays, then found Santana Moss for 18 yards to move Washington to the New York 27-yard line. A short pass to Keiland Williams turned into a 23-yard gain to set up first and goal on the four yard line, and two plays later Grossman found Davis on the right side of the end zone to pull Washington within three.

First Quarter:

The New York Giants took a 3-0 lead into the second quarter of the Washington Redskins season finale, aided by a miss on a 30-yard field goal attempt by Redskins' placekicker Graham Gano.

Redskins' cornerback saved a sure touchdown with a shoestring tackle on the Giants' Brandon Jacobs to keep the score close.

Neither offense could move the ball much on their opening drives. The Giants were the first to get on the board.

After saving the touchdown on Jacobs' 27-yard rumble, Barnes hit New York quarterback Eli Manning after a 14-yard scramble on third and 11 that gave the Giants first and goal on the Redskins six-yard line. Washington's defense tightened up, however, and New York settled for a 20-yard Lawrence Tynes field goal to take a 3-0 lead.

Washington answered with a solid drive behind the running of Ryan Torain, who had carries of 16 and 14 yards, but the drive stalled at the New York 12-yard line and Gano pushed his field goal wide left from 30 yards out.

Mario Manningham failed to catch a pass across the middle on the ensuing drive and Phillip Buchanon picked off the tipped ball, giving Washington possession at the Giants 25-yard line entering the second quarter.

Say what you want about him, but Eli has made some very good throws to move their offense, even when the protection breaks down.

That's why, btw, you draft guys with an elite arm and accuracy--they make plays.

And so far, Eli has.

play calling is atrocious...Giants "D" playing the run and the supposed great play action passes has not materialized. You play action on 1st and 10 not on 2nd and 11. Not on 3rd and 7... not fooling anybody. Also these small mobile guards and center are getting destroyed. This is not Mile High stadium. Not playing in the AFC west...in the 1990s. Just finished watching the Giants go down the field to score. Defense is playing with urgency, but still needs to pick up pace. defense definitely needs to have
more "speed" overall. looks like a 1/2 step
slower than the giants. Skins's offense line needs a center, too much push up the
middle from the Giant defensive line. Where's that Rob Jackson from last week.

c) Kyle called different plays for Rex than he did for McNabb

That is why he is playing... so he can prove that to Shanny. Mcnabb was simply not getting it done. Grossman is apparently good enough to be a back up... he knows the offense, and can be a coach in waiting in the meeting room next year with "The Kid"...

Love to see 'The Kid" and Pouncey(or another stud C/G) as our first two picks in April.

Dude, you're not making any sense. You don't get to keep your job based on how you were doing at this time last year....you keep it based on how you're doing RIGHT NOW.

MC5 sucked balls and got benched. Rex came in and despite his past, is playing better than Chunky Soup.

Those are the facts you might like to acquaint yourself with.

Good one, BenT. Not sure where you're making up your stats, but we're talking about his year in DC. McNabb had 14 TDs and 15 INTs this year. That's part of why Grossman is playing and -- 5 TDs and 3 INTs -- is an upgrade over McNabb.

We get the ball back at the start of the 3rd.

We must get a long drive punctuated by a score.

And even if we don't score, a long drive that keeps the ginas' offense off the field is a winner.

But we'll need points--this is where Rex earns the job for next year.

Posted by: MistaMoe | January 2, 2011 5:46 PM | Report abuse

The time for evaluating a players fit into a system, a team, potential to be a real contributor is in the preseason - NOT WITH 3 games left. This season going south was the Shannys started in Detroit at a time when the Skins actually had a winning record. These guys are not interested so much in winning as they are in showing everyone, the media, the players, the world the they're in charge. But what about winning a friggin game?

I watched Daddy Shanny after the loss to the Cowboys. He was smiling because he showed everyone that HE WAS RIGHT about Rex. Nevermind that he'd just lost a game to the most hated rival the Skins have - even a division opponent. But he was smiling all over himself.

Last week when asked about going for it on fourth down he was so pleased to tell reporters that "that's the kind of guy I am".

I DON'T CARE WHAT KIND OF GUY HE IS ANY MORE. I WANT A FRIGGIN WIN. SO TALK TO ME AFTER THEY'VE ELIMINATED THE GIANTS FROM THE PLAYOFFS AND I'LL CONCEDE, OKAY?

Ben, ever play poker?

Sometimes you raise preflop with pocket 88, and know you have to fold post flop when you get 3 callers and it comes down AKQ. Once you realize that you are beat, its pretty f'ing stupid to keep throwing money in the pot hoping to win.

Redskins raised preflop with McNabb. He proved to be rags and was discarded as such.

Now we can further debate whether they should have raised preflop with him, but at this point it doesn't matter. He is s loser (for whatever reason) WITH THE REDSKINS and should be discarded.

What i care about is the Redskins figuring out who will be here going forward, who needs to be replaced in which order, and getting as high a draft position as possible. Sure I want them to win on a weekly basis, but what i really want is to see who is willing to compete and who can compete. If they win, great. If they lose and move up a draft spot or two, even better. They are not going to win the Superbowl with this roster. The problem is that they are not one or two pieces away. They have needs up and down the roster including QB, interior Oline, interior Dline, LB(two minimum), CB, maybe safety(KMoore ain't the answer, Barnes?), maybe WR(Kelly back?), maybe RB(Portis done, are K Will and Torrain the answer?).

Grossman pick. Gawd. Sellers miscue? Likely.

Who's to say whether Sellers ran the wrong route or Rex was throwing to the wrong route? I wouldn't call that a really egregious interception. Not good, sure, but not horrible. His fumble really wasn't his fault - that was on the blocking. I'd say Rex has had an average to slightly above average game. He is and will always be a middle of the pack qb.

Where McNabb is much, much, much better than Grossman: Ability to take a shot in the pocket without fumbling the ball. First half, Grossman not at fault as he was trying to make a throw. He has to maintain security when protection breaks down. he can't. That is why he is a journeyman whose mental intangibles far exceed his physical skills.

"You're not for starting over every year? Really? Because if you think 1 year is all the proof you need then you will be starting over every year...forever."

HOWEVER, Shanahan is KNOWN for fielding really lousy defenses. One of the reasons he is no longer in Denver. Is it his ego that gets in the way? As I recall the Redskins had another HC like that by the name of Norv Turner. Strangely enough (with the one exception of Joe Gibbs) whenever Snyder picked the DC they seemed to a lot better? Snyder can't be involved in running this franchise at all and Shanny makes that more likely to happen by fielding a really poor defense.

Let's compare last year's defense (the one everyone thought sucked because there weren't enough turnovers to this one). Last year's was far and away better. What a difference a year makes?

Rex Grossman: 3 turnovers. George Allen, Marty Schottenheimer, Joe Gibbs, Richie Petitbone, etc. all claim that any team that commits 3 turnovers shouldn't win. That's Rex's evaluation in a nutshell.

I'm not saying they need should start over. What I am saying someone ought to be evaluating Shanahan and son Kyle. As John Riggins points out, they have committed way too many turn overs in their management of this franchise this year. That absolutely has to stop.

Kudos for your team loyalty --except when its a former Iggle suiting up. I too held your optimism (McNabb not withstanding) until Shenanigan went nuts, proving himself an intransigent ego-maniac, pushing all the wrong buttons.

Orakpo needs to start laying people out. Sure he'll get ejected a bunch, but eventually people will stop holding him once a few people end up on injured reserve with a broken jaw.

Don't have to sell me on Snyder hatred. Here's the deal, though, and listen close, it's going to take someone as hard headed, arrogant, and dedicated as Shanny to keep Snyder from completely Jerry Jonesing, stay the course, and bring some consistency to this damn team. Even Gibbs quit on us, I don't see Shanny doing that. You may not like him or his style (God knows I don't. Hell, I didn't even want him here.) but that's what it's going to take.

The further away from the front of the draft we get the further away we get from the good QB's. This year there is some good QB's. More than most years. Redskins in a word: Flawed.

They are not there yet, but I like the direction they are going. They have discovered some good young players, and have identified areas in obvious need of improvement. Next year should be better, but very likely not there yet. I like where they are and the trajectory compared to one year ago.

It takes more than one year to dig out from the hole in which they were mired.

Shanahan is going to draft a QB in the first round. Here's hoping he gets a good one and does not shoot his entire wad on that one guy. Its 50/50.

Posted by: skinswillwin | January 2, 2011 7:31 PM | Report abuse

It's been a bad season, but there have been some positives.

Our o-line hasn't been good, but at least the new coach/front office has tried to do something about it, picking up two new tackles.

We got some good, young RBs. We started with Portis, Johnson and Parker, and finish with 4-youngsters on the roster. D Young might well be our FB of the future as well.

Armstrong, Banks (and may be Austin and Paulsen as well). We have picked up some useful bit part players this year.

Carriker. He isn't a star, but he is a decent starter and we got him for almost nothing.

Barnes might not be a wasted picked.

Grossman showed that the offensive scheme can work.

Grossman made enough mistakes so that no one will be any doubt that we need to bring in a new QB. Maybe at last this organisation will start to rebuild for the long term rather than hoping to sneak into the play-offs with a makeshift and ageing team.

Shanahan made a lot of mistakes, and the media haven't been shy about it. Maybe, during off-season, he will look back over the year and it will take some of the edge off his attitude.

No question, it was a terrible season, but I think there were some positives. There weren't that many and they are that big, but at least we got some.

Plus, Dallas sucked and that never gets old.

Joe namath was on sirius nfl the other day and had a couple of good points. He said the coaches sometimes get to much flak for the mistakes that the players make. He also said that its unfortunate how the media treats coaches who dont open up and talk to them as much as they would like. For the record he was talking about coughlin, sporano, and mangini, but seems a lil apt here

The bottom line is that the 'Skins suck every year and Shanahan and his baby boy, rather than improving the situation, have created more turmoil. BTW Rex-a-quick-six-for-the-other-team is NOT the answer.

Let's see how Danny feels next year when the games are blacked-out due to a dearth of fans. LMAO!!!!

Coparker, you maybe right. He may be enamored with Locker. I have not seen enough of Dalton, but liked how he made good strong accurate throws against Wisconsin. He also seems smart. Smart and accurate wins in the NFL.

Absent the NFC West (and maybe even there if Bradford gets in) every play off team has an excellent QB.

Redskins don't have an excellent QB on their roster. They need to get one.

, but there have been some positives.

There sure are:

--R Torain can replace Portis

--we still could use a speed back to go with him

--another deep threat is very necessary

--Fred Davis should catch and CC should block

--Rex Sux, but can hold the fort while a drafted young'n learns

--AH and DM5 moved equal additional picks just like CR22 and RockyMac walking away might

--A Bryant, A Carriker, and V Holliday are sound

--J Jarmon, K Barnes, RobJax, and D Scott are sound

--A Carter, K Moore, C Horton, M Sellars, and C Rabach should be goners

--B Banks is good, but another speed guy with size with wr skills would be nice

--and despite the endless whining about the o-line, it has stood up to some decent defensive lines

So many needs on this team. Here's 4 players I'm excited to see more of next year.

1. I like how KW has improved so much from the start of this year. He may not be a star in the league, but he should end up being a solid role player on the team.

2. Love AAA. He's a serviceable #2, probably a #3. Single him up and there's a big play waiting to happen.

3. Anthony "Bear" Bryant. Hopefully with more experience, he can become a good NT. He's been a nice find.

4. Rob Jackson has flashed some skill. Again another player who with more experience should be a solid #2 OLB.

I cannot find "real time" SOS for the past season, but I am under the impression that the league uses this one, which is based off of 2009 W/L record:

The Skins were 4 and 3 going into Detroit when Baby Boy and his dad decided that they did not want Mc5 and benched him with two minutes left for Grossman who apparently the Shannys thought would give them "the best chance to win". How'd that work out for them? They went into the bye two week period with a media firestorm. Then tried to correct it with an announcement of McNabb's new contract. It did not work. They'd lost the team with lies and deceptions while dealing with the media.

Every knowledgeable person in the NFL wondered about the so-called wisdom of this move. What it did was destroy the team's faith in what chemistry was there and what support was their for their QB and their team captain. How'd that work out for us? BADLY, VERY BADLY.

It's fine to bench a player - any player at all when it's done like a real manager or even a real adult would do. But these guys destroyed the morale of their own team and don't even realize it.

They got what they deserve. But we didn't. The Skins could have had a much more successful season if their brain trust had conducted business in an upfront manner with his team. Forget about the media but the lies and spin didn't help either.

So cut your ties with McNabb now and let him go on his classy way toward a better situation. But also be certain that this team needs a QB, needs excellent free agents and draft choices for sure. More than any of these, this team needs a program that the players can believe in.

Tiebreakers

• Strength of schedule for the previous season is the first tie-breaker for teams with the same winning percentage. The team with the lowest strength of schedule percentage wins the tiebreaker and picks ahead of all other teams with the same record.

• Divisional and conference records are the next step in the tie-breaking procedure.

• As a last resort, a coin toss is used to determine the order of selection for teams with the same winning percentage.

It's based on last year's strength of schedule, not how you ended this year.

I'll assume that FA stands for Fat Albert. Fat Albert starts when some team with a horrible D line is dumb enough to take him from us and bribes him with a twinkie for each sack he makes. Neglecting the twinkie solution was Shanahan's biggest flaw in his first year here.

Redskins Journal

Redskins draft order scenarios entering SEA-STL game

If my calculations are correct, the Redskins will pick either 10th or 11th in the 2011 NFL Draft depending on which team wins tonight’s game between Seattle and St. Louis.

If Seattle wins or the game finishes tied, the Redskins will draft 10th.

If St. Louis wins, the Redskins will draft 11th.

As of now, there are eight teams tied with six victories. Strength of schedule is used as the tiebreaker.

Below is listed the draft order as of now. The number in parentheses is the total number of victories by that team’s 16 opponents. The more wins, the tougher your schedule, the worse your draft pick is.

7th. San Francisco (123)

8th. Seattle** (124)

9th. Tennessee (130)

10th. Dallas (131)

11th. Washington (132)

12th. Houston (134)

13th. Minnesota (138)

14th. Detroit (139)

***If the Seahawks win, they will be 7-9 and therefore pick after the 6-10 Redskins. If Seattle loses, the Redskins would pick after the Seahawks because the Seahawks finished 6-10 with an easier schedule than Washington.

And if the Rams win, the Redskins’ opponents will finish the season with 133 wins–not enough to fall behind Houston.

If the tonight’s game is a tie, Seattle would be 6-9-1 and pick after all the 6-10 teams.

Got it?

Hey Sugar Tits, I hope you're pretty because you're as dumb as a sack of dull hammers.

ROFL
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Diesel44: Actually, I'm a 60 year old woman who has been a fan for many years. I even have dirt from the 50 yard line of RFK. A lot of people think I'm pretty smart. What I do know is that a sure sign of an immature personality is someone who resorts to name calling instead if articulating an argument to win a debate.

RI a few hours after the final loss of a miserable season:

a wasteland of frustrated, vituperative, perhaps drunk bloggers

-----------------------

Darn you Shanny for such a crappy first season. Let's hope you got your major suckage out of your system. You made this season pretty joyless for a lot of Skins fans.

Overall

Well it is over.

Zorn was not that bad, always liked the guy, nice guy, glad he no longer looks like an idiot. Well we need to fill many positions. Hopefully, Dennis S. learned one player will not help the Skins. McNabb was fine but he was not going to turn this team around. Rex is Ok but he will not turn the tide either.

I hope Dennis understands and has the power over Danny boy, and the skill to upgrade the team. Trade any "one" player for "two" or "three". You have to keep the real talent like RAC, Cooley, Hoefully some of the O line, a few Defense players, and upgrade the rest.

I read the comments, How can anyone think the Skins are going to the super bowl any time soon. They will be lucky to make the playoffs in 2013. Start building this team from the bottom up and anyone who can not play in this league for five years is trade bait.

Remember Zorn was not that bad just an impossible job.

All finished and now the coach and his staff
have to make the moves to improve the team.

The coach was rebuilding with the hope of making the playoffs and were in most games
and most were close.
I hope the coach turns
out to be correct about his field goal
kicker with the strong leg.11 missed field
goals-with some -today-overtime? and others for a win.
A more accurate kicker -and all other things being the same-they might have made it.One thing for sure-this team has HEART.

Its been fun posting here.Good luck to all.

Shanny don't have to overpay to get Vince Jackson. He can draft Justin Blackmon who is a Brandon Marshall clone. The Skins offense could be dynamic with a bona-fide #1 wr - and a o-line, and a RB, etc...

Welcome to a new offseason!

Same as the old offseasons.

Here goes...aw, forget it. I've got nothing new to add.

Same old freaking conversation we've been having every offseason for years.

why is Jeff Fisher considered to be such a great coach?

Did the meaningless win over the Jaguars drop the Skins from the 5th overall pick to the 10th?
